Simon Manaen

Appearance (NOTE: The art above is AI generated, and is as close to my vision as I was able to get the AI to go. For a more accurate look, check below, thank you!)

Simon always wears dark slacks and dark brown leather shoes alongside a dark blazer thrown atop a lighter -usually white- dress shirt. Simon usually wears the blazer open, with the dress shirt loosely tucked in. However, his outfits are almost always somewhat scuffed, upon further inspection. His shoes may be poorly waxed, or his blazer missing a button, or his dress shirt might have a small stain on the collar.

Simon is a shorter man, somewhere between 5'6" and 5'7", though his slouch shortens his height even more. Despite his height, Simon is quite slender. Simon's pallid and empty skin contrasts with his deep brown eyes, under which hang large bags. Simon's crooked nose juts off his angled head, like someone trying to balance themselves on an uneven plane. Somewhere between wavy and stringy, Simon's dark-grey hair is thick and uneven. He also has a thin layer of stubble across his jawline and chin.

Age

19

Ability

Hypnotic Amnesia: Simon is capable of making someone forget his presence. Unfortunately, he can't fully control it, and those around him tend to forget him. Though, repeated exposure makes it harder to forget him.

Personality

Simon is very shy and introverted. Simon is reclusive, especially so since the death of Father Thomas Rhett. Simon is also very depressed, but he keeps a solid routine.

Fear

Simon fears being alone. Simon has never had a real family. The person closest to him in his life has been dead for two years. Other than Father Thomas, he has rarely had anyone he could call more than an acquaintance. He feels alone without God, and yet he cannot continue to believe in God.

Background

A small baby boy was born out of wedlock to a young couple who had neither the desire nor the ability to care for the boy. After birthing the boy in secret, the mother abandoned him at a Catholic orphanage in Maysville. The Maysville Catholic Orphanage took in the boy for the time being, trying to find his parents, or at least a suitable set of parents. However, no parents were ever found for the boy, and the orphanage continued to care for the boy as he grew.

Eventually, Father Thomas Rhett began looking after the boy, who the orphanage named Simon Manaen. Father Thomas was a younger man, in his early 20s, when he began looking after Simon. Though he was a priest officially, he was more of a religious scholar, interested in the stories and artifacts of the bible. When Simon was young, Father Thomas read Simon a different bible story every night. When Simon was old enough to read on his own, he pored over the bible himself.

With Father Thomas to mentor him, Simon began to study the bible in depth. As he grew, he spent much of his free time at the church, studying to be a priest. He even spent time in the rectory, discussing passages with the other priests. Though, Simon and Father Thomas were more academic in their studies, while the other priests were more traditional, Simon learned from all.

When Simon hit his teen years, he began questioning things more. He wondered about the validity of the bible, and if God and Heaven truly existed. During his teen years, he and Father Thomas debated the bible and its validity every night. Simon decided that he believed no longer, but he wondered why someone so intelligent as Father Thomas would continue to believe.

When Simon was 17 years old, Father Thomas was diagnosed with terminal heart cancer. Suddenly, the rectory was quieter; both men rarely talked about anything anymore. Finally, Father Thomas was bedridden, and death was near. The disparity in their beliefs was the farthest it had ever been. Sensing, he'd never get another chance to ask, Simon said "Father, why do you still believe in those stories?"

Father Thomas looked into Simon's eyes, which pooled up with tears, "Because I have to, son." Simon's tears began to flow like a stream, and Father Thomas passed away in Simon's arms.

Now, to honor the memory of Father Thomas, Simon goes to mass and confession every week.

Other

Simon is very much an adult loser. He has no job or social life. His dwellings are a wreck, and he's rarely well-groomed, though he isn't completely filthy.
@daredabble Awesome! When I get a chance, I'll move him to the characters tab and make his ability description more in line with what you suggested.

Awesome! I'll try to have a character in soon! Thanks for your cooperation.

@CDT0925 Sorry about the vagueness! An ability is just something your character is uniquely good at, or a special power they can control. The character can be a brainiac, able to solve complex equations with only their mind or super strength, able to lift cars and trucks with little to no effort at all.

I'm looking at the Kids on Bikes system RPG for reference and i think i'd say the upper limit is, for example, altering the speed of time. This ability is powerful, so it also has drawbacks. Maybe the character can't control how long they speed up/slow down for or they age rapidly if they try to use it.

Abilities can be mostly anything under the sun, as long as they have about equal consequence to the player. Another example could be telekinesis, but can only be used if the character is inebriated enough.

Consequences don't all have to be psychological/physical. For example, the brainiac can have a hard time socializing with others, as they've spent most of their time studying. Or the character with super strength is feared among the students/peers, even if they try to be friendly.

tl;dr Abilities are just special things your character can do, compared to other people. You can have almost any ability, as long as they have a suitable weakness/drawback.

thanks! :D

Awesome! Quick question! Do all of our abilities have to have a consequence, or would a lower-tier ability be consequence free? Also, are we allowed to come up with our own consequences, or would you prefer to assign them yourself?
Could you be more specific about what ability means in this case? Maybe an example of an ability at the upper limit of what you would accept?

thank you :D i was thinking major events/combat could use some altered 5e system and everything else would be mostly free rp. nothings really set in stone yet but i do want to incorporate some 'leveling up' mechanic or just get more stats based on what you do in the rp. example, if you're a bookworm and spend most downtime in the library, you'd gain more intelligence points or something like that.

have any of you seen roleplays that worked like this before? i still want to keep the casual/free aspect of it and make it easy for beginners to pick up

That sounds simple and fun to me. Admittedly, I haven't seen anything like that, but maybe there's a simple system for combat and progression we can use. Then the RP moments will just be free RP with no game mechanics. Sadly, I haven't a specific suggestion, but that would be cool.
Worry not! I have confidence in your ability. Your initial post gives me much hope for an interesting RP. Out of curiosity though, will this use a game system, or is it more of a free RP?
I'm interested in joining, but I'd like to know a little more about the RP. For now though, I'll just leave you with my interest and my RP experience:

*About 3 solid years of D&D 5e, a couple sessions of Pathfinder, and a session of Cyberpunk RED.
*I've got low to mid-level RP skills, though I'm more comfortable in a written/typed RP.
*Confident writer with some writing experience, though little narrative experience or skill.
Howdy @Lurking Krog! I know the Join Status for this RP says full, but I was wondering if there was a possibility I could join in? I will check back in sometime after I get off work tomorrow.
