There is almost no such thing as "absolute darkness", especially with a light source in viewing distance. The light diffuses enough that dilated pupils have trouble gathering enough to see, but even if the transition from brightly lit to dark took less than a second, it would take a normally functioning eye only a second or two do discern enough detail to locate a moving creature (Especially since the part of our brains that recognize the "movement" part of an object is more Reactive than the parts that recognize "detail" or "form"). Effectively, unless the lights suddenly turn back on again, they won't be fighting blind for very long.

Semblances are also supposed to be unique and tailored to the individual. That was the case for two and a half volumes before it was thrown out the window for the Schnees, but they're family and World of Remnant explained that can be the case with family, so it can be allowed. Plus, the only illusions we've seen of Neo's are her getaway with Roman - which was plainly toying with RWBY and done for visual effect - and her disguise for the Vytal Festival - which I find it hard to believe shattered at any point, or it would give up the whole ghost.

There's no way Mercury - a character whom, up until this point, we have had no reason to believe has any illusionary talent whatsoever, and in fact has a character and fighting style that seems to be based entirely around his own footwork - and Neo - a character designed around the very concept - have Semblances that similar. Emerald, maybe. Illusion!Yatsu was approaching Coco a few weeks ago at the exact second that Mercury was knocking the real Yatsu out, so it couldn't be him, but there's the potential that a master thief would have a Semblance designed to trick people.

But if you're really not inclined to believe it was Neo, Emerald's a more plausible option than Merc - and even still, her Semblance being illusions would make Neo superfluous as a character.

"similar" does not mean "identical" I find it impossible that there are not two people who's semblance deal with illusion, rather than the opposite, yet they can accomplish the task in different ways with differing results, meaning neither is superfluous.
Also admittedly while Emerald's profession would benifit from such a tallent, I feel as though we haven't actually seen her potential. Surprisingly, Mercury is far more deceitful than Emerald, possessing a far greater control over his emotions. Since a semblance is based off personality and not weapon choice, it's not unlikely that such deceit is the basis of a misleading semblance.

I will, however, concede that Neo may indeed be behind it all, it's not as if I'm infalable. I just really don't like her is all, and hope it's not.

I'm afraid I can't agree with you. Neo can make illusions, that's true, but they seem to be different from what's going on (plus I'm fairly certain her semblance and really anybody else's requires close proximity, being extensions of their auras). While Neo seems to be able to make true illusions, they shatter on impact, while Mercury's "Misdirection" (which is what I'm calling it, assuming it is him), is smoother and can withstand scrutiny and even play out an entire false scene, but needs to be anchored on a situation already taking place (he can change someone's appearance, make them seem to vanish into thin air, or modify a chain of events in progress, but he can't maintain a realistic copy while running away).

Interesting Semblance though. I was thinking Emerald was the one mimicking Yatsuhashi, but if Mercury can change how people perceive reality...
