Weeeeeeell, actually, that's not how sight works.

Human eyesight is excellent at detecting movement, even in low-light conditions. What it's not excellent at is discerning detail in those conditions. Furthermore, human night vision kicks in fairly quickly and provides a decent level of visual acuity in conditions that aren't "total blackness".

Plus I can't help but think that ditching glowing red eyes is pretty much tearing itself away from everything ever shown about Grimm ever, but I don't have any influence over that bit.

I'll have a post done for Benjamin as soon as I can, but this is finals week. My time is at an absolute premium.

Same reason you can navigate a dark room after a few seconds, even if it was perfectly lit before. You might not be able to see detail, but discerning your surroundings is easy peasy.

And light from a lit room through a doorway is a lot more light than my bedroom when I turn the light out. And contains fewer things trying to kill me.

I really need to clear my floor of tripping hazards.

You'd still have to consider the frantic conditions, even taking account a normal persons night vision. Much harder to do find obstacles and hostile when the hostile are in flux and the obstacles are the least of your worries.

I suggest spraying and praying, or failing that flailing wildly.

Except moving enemies makes things easier. There's nothing frantic about what the humans in that room are doing, the only chaos is coming from the movements of Grimm.

Moving enemies, especially when you know where your allies are in relation to you, makes discerning targets even easier than discerning obstacles. Telling one target from another becomes trickier when you have a large group, but frankly there's no need to tell them apart. Seeing a moving hostile in low light conditions is easy. A shotgun in its direction is even easier.

Human night vision evolved in large part so we could deal with the things that go bump in the night.

Depends on the level of light then, and the position Of the enemy. I'll admit that low light shouldn't be that hard, but i get the impression The battle takes place in what is effectively total darkness, with low light only around the entrance. Assuming that the grimms eyes aren't that vibrant, you're still just swinging and aiming at the general directions of where movement happened. And if you want to hit anything, you don't aim where they were, but where they're going to be.

Of course if the Grimm are moving in predictable patterns even total darkness won't help them. It'll just be a matter of warding off their attacks long enough for them to run into a weapon.

Pitching in.

There is almost no such thing as "absolute darkness", especially with a light source in viewing distance. The light diffuses enough that dilated pupils have trouble gathering enough to see, but even if the transition from brightly lit to dark took less than a second, it would take a normally functioning eye only a second or two do discern enough detail to locate a moving creature (Especially since the part of our brains that recognize the "movement" part of an object is more Reactive than the parts that recognize "detail" or "form"). Effectively, unless the lights suddenly turn back on again, they won't be fighting blind for very long.

It makes sense in these conditions that sight would still work in some respect, I admit my error. The characters' eyes do have yet to fully adjust, however.

I'm to believe that every single first-year hunter and huntress has nerves of steel, perfect eyesight, and perfect reactions in a situation like this? I literally couldn't think of a scarier ambush.

As for the Grimm themselves, if anyone's having doubts, these are Grievers we're fighting. All they have going for them is stealth and surprise. Add in glowing eyes (which the RWBYpedia entry doesn't mention any Grimm having, by the way, just 'red eyes') and this 'scary' encounter is just a matter of single swings and lone gunshots.

Well, I posted, decided not to advance it too much. I also found Sarina voice actor from Durarara and the voice she has is just perfectly suited for her.
