I have an RP idea in mind where you play either a militarized task force designed to eliminate paranormal activity, or something akin to the Umbrella Secret Service.

I am trying to worldbuild god civs akin to the Time Lords or Xeelee, but so far I've yet to get anything concrete down. It is a tad frustrating, but I'll come up with something eventually. I hope.

@Obscene: And that is true. I might try that with a character I'm making for a fic actually. Though they'll be no-nonsense in a largely jovial kind of way.

Yeah. Static was just what popped into my head as the closest descriptor since those are less focused on the character's arc or internal struggle. Not the best wording to use admittedly.

I just want more protagonists with that same resolve, or barring that ones who aren't confused young adults looking to find their place in life analogues.

Thanks!
@Sigma
Okay, here's the full sheet. And yes I did pull almost all of the info from the Orion's Arm wiki, mostly due to the fact that their autowars are basically what I imagine when thinking of self-replicating swarms designed for armed conflict.
@Sigma
Alright. I've got a WIP up. Wanted to post it here before continuing to see if there's anything that needs to be changed. Especially since I started writing on autopilot after a point.
@Havoccultist Other than black hole generators, those other power sources are acceptable. As for Plague bombs, that'll be fine, the current Orion Sphere is rift with war crimes :P

Sounds good. I'll get to working on a sheet for ORN, otherwise known as the Orion Reclamation Network.
@Havoccultist Sounds great with me so far! As for numbers, hundreds of thousands or millions is a fair range for the ASI machines.

Alright. Also on weapons like plague bombs and such, if they are allowed they'd really only be deployed against particularly stubborn worlds. The ultimate goal is reclamation and ensuring a return to Federation control, and leaving a bunch of ruined, uninhabitable, and unusable worlds behind wouldn't really be conducive to that.

Other than that I don't think I have many questions besides what kinds of power sources are allowed. I know the dyson swarm angle isn't allowed, but given the fact there is gravitational technology, what about black hole generators? Or certain types of fusion reactors like cold fusion or direct fusion drives?
@Havoccultist Maaaybe scale down the numbers a notch, but otherwise, I'm good with it. :)

Cool. I think maybe a vague hundreds of thousands would work better, but I can go with hundreds instead if that doesn't work. I do have it in mind, however, that for planetary warfare a special class of autowar is used that's essentially a flying fortress which uses gravity manipulation technology to pull up resources, which it then uses to manufacture said ground and atmospheric based units. Kind of like a World Devastator from Star Wars, but less indestructible. And nowhere near as stupidly OP. So the numbers can easily fluctuate based on the narrative if need be with that idea, either because resources have run out, the gravitational tractor has been countered or disabled, etc.

For weaponry beyond that, I'm really just thinking these ground forces use standard lasers and kinetic/explosive weaponry, unless plague bombs or gray goo type weapons are allowed, but that might be a bit much. These wouldn't be like physically accurate lasers either, but Star Wars style ones, where it's akin to a slow moving (comparatively) bolt of superheated plasma that can be reflected or absorbed with the right materials. And obviously dodged.

Oh my bad, I didn't really catch on to that part of your post about the pre-planning. I still don't know honestly, on the fence if it could work site wide. But I mean if you want to give it a shot in a story, who are we to stop you.

That's cool that you were in some of those sharing story arcs within a story under the overarching narrative like you said. :D

At the end of the day, don't feel discouraged and give it a go. You're trying something most of us haven't dared to. So like props to you.

I'll probably get round to it eventually.

I say as I join yet another RP in the meantime... 😅

I'd need to find people who are dedicated enough, maybe a small group, and obviously have an idea that draws interest. But there's no rush in any case. I just wanted to discuss this because I've seen as many RPs die due to GMs leaving or closing them down, the latter I've done myself at times simply because the motivation wasn't there, as they would have due to players leaving and wondered if there wasn't a better way that capitalized on the collaborative aspect of the hobby.
This is insightful and pretty indepth conversation on the topic. I'm gunna just put in my 50 cents in a simpler fashion.

Would it be viable for every player to be a GM in every story on this site at The Same Time Through The Whole Story? In my opinion no because it's too confusing about who's deciding where the next destination is at a given post and because it would take too much collaboration of people rapid posting back and forth to get a single post out. People's timezones compounds the problem.

Now I think your idea can be tweaked and could work in a story within the site. There was a roleplay I was a part of a long time ago. Where one gm would have control through one story arc and it sort of passed to the next player for the next story arc. Now that's for a single story if you and the other players want to do that.

Well I probably didn't explain it too well, but ideally all the plotting of where to go and what to do would be hashed out before the RP even starts, hence my point on making an outline or deciding on a beginning, middle, and ending at the very least so that you have goalposts to work towards. As opposed to just writing whatever comes to mind in the moment or within one character's arc that hopefully connects with the main plot being woven by a GM. But I can see how the posting format might be problematic in that regard even with all the planning. And, additionally, how much effort that is to put in before the roleplay even begins, which given this is a hobby would require finding people with the same levels of competence, reliability, and motivation as you like Quartz mentioned.

And I recall a few roleplays like that, where each player controls a particular arc within the overarching narrative. Can't say I joined many, as I'm fairly certain a lot were set in DC or Marvel and neither of those series I'm really interested in, but that could definitely work.
@Havoccultist The setting does have its fair share of superstructures, forge worlds, and city worlds. Sadly though, I'm afraid that Dyson Spheres/Swarms and above would be prohibited, sorry about that.

That's more than fair. I just figured I'd float the idea to get a general gist of the level of crazy weapons can get. Autowars, that is self-replicating warships which act like offensive Von Neumann swarms and strip systems of resources to build more of themselves according to a template, alongside what could easily be millions or billions of machines for planetside engagements (assuming we're operating to actual scale or close to it for these nations) would be effective enough as a fighting force I imagine, though I can easily scale those numbers down if need be. I noticed gravity manipulation tech was a thing in one of the accepted(?) sheets, so maybe I could go with that instead for ejecta-less or reactionless (if I'm not mistaken) drives and similar stuff. But not like full on, crush or implode an entire system, or whatever batshit things the Xeelee like to do.

Also, I know I'm focusing a lot on the tech and military aspects right now. That's largely because this ASI-to-be is meant to be a rather straightforward entity (and I guess antagonistic force) all things considered, so I feel it's pertinent to focus more on its capabilities at the moment instead of its politics and the like. That's not to say it cannot negotiate, just that its ultimate goal is bringing the Orion Sphere back under Federation control.
All right, and on a technological scale, what's a good cap? I was thinking that maybe it could have one superweapon for defensive or intimidation purposes. Like a dyson swarm that can be repurposed into a Nicoll-Dyson Beam. The rest of its forces could be standard warforms or the like, maybe autowars or a type of Von Neumann probe if self-replicating machines are allowed.
