Whatever it was that blew a hole in that tree was just a warning shot and Nijira had no answer for it. So, it looked like sensei was playing hard... at least he wanted them to think he was. That was the only explanation for it! Fine, then! If that was the way that he wanted to play it, then... Then he'd better be ready to kill, because Jira wasn't going to stop, just because sensei was obviously stronger than him. If he did, he might just as well die, anyway! He growled and began to strafe the woods. He knew where sensei was. He could smell him, and it looked like he wasn't doing anything to hide that.

Komi followed along and whined a little, drawing Jira's attention back to his teammates.

"Keh! If they want to go rushing into the forest, who cares? Sensei's gonna take them out anyway", he said coldly. Komi didn't seem to like this response very much and rooed at him sadly about it.

"I-it's not my problem! They're the ones that decided not to follow their only tracker", he replied a little more pleadingly than he meant. Komi gave two quiet barks and held his face away, as if they were playing tug of war, which they were, in a way. But there wasn't time for the two of them to settle the argument. A strange sound caught their attention and both at once perceived at that it was an echoing coming from the ground, from their footsteps perhaps... Jira tapped the ground with his foot and Komi scratched at it, puzzled. It was as if... the ground itself were... h-hollow and hard... And then they heard other echoes, farther away... coming from... They were centered around just where sensei was and... Th-that sound was like metal against rock! DAMN!

Eyes wide and teeth grit, he and Komi barreled towards the forest, to where he smelled Naruko's ramen breath and Gorudo's swampy smell. He knew Naruko must have made clones, because the pungent smell of instant ramen was everywhere and he could hear her tromping around the forest, as quiet as an elephant, but he also knew that she wasn't about to leave Gorudo's side any time soon. Jira'd seen them at school together and Jira, like everyone, just assumed they were dating. It was just his luck he got stuck with the smelliest couple in school. He supposed it was good luck, at the moment. They were so easy to track, he could have found them with his eyes closed!

He was running as fast as he could, but he could already hear the sound of metal whizzing past and more clanking against the ground. As soon as they were in sight, Jira threw his whole body against Naruko and Komi attempted the same to Gorudo. If they could just get them to the ground... Damnit! Why were they so reckless?!?

Arisu Ayaname"Who do you think you are, picking a fight with an Ayaname!"

Unbelievable! Before they could even fool the weird kid in the hat and glasses, that weird guy from the Leaf popped out of the jounin meeting to inform them all that she, hat and stars, and some other dopes were headed with him. Ari rolled her eyes, put her hands on her hips, and put a foot on the rock she'd been using as a chair (which, due to its size and her relative lack of size was a testament to her flexibility).

"Well, it looks like we're splitting up, gang", she said loudly to her other two teammates. Maka crossed a pair of arms, put another on the stump table, and rubbed her head while stroking her chin with the last pair. Kamui looked up with sad looking serious eyes and nodded once. But Ari wasn't finished, "You'd better take care. I won't be there to save you, this time", and she used her leg up to hop farther away, landing in a closed-leg squat, "Oh, and hat and stars", she said without looking behind her, "Don't worry. I'm gonna keep you alive. You still owe us a game."

She never looked back and didn't see Maka raise an eyebrow as she sped away, but it was doubtful whether she'd have cared if she had. She left shortly after the one that the spear man had called "Yue-chan" did and just followed behind her. She never even noticed the odd paintings, so single-minded was she in her pursuit, and by the time she reached the entrance to the cave with the rest of the group, she was almost surprised that there wasn't more running. That was pretty characteristic of Ari, she could be very singularly focused and even lose track of just how long she'd been doing something. She was tireless, in that way, up until the point that she passed out completely. It was usually Kamui or Maka that shook her out of her temporary obsessions... until the next one.

When offered gummy stars, Ari took a hand full and would later claim she never got any.

"Yes, I suspected something like this would happen if you were on the mission, but this has gone better than I’d hoped. With the enemy on high alert, my mission becomes easier. Though the odds of the genin’s survival is lower, in the end it is a net positive. Thank you", said the man Ari came to find was named Hideo. He was talking to that Mizuraki jounin and apparently, something had happened in the tunnels with the clones. He continued, "I would not stop you from accompanying us. You are the only one who knows how to navigate most of these tunnels, if you can still remember where you just were."

By then, however, Ari wasn't paying attention. She'd decided that this was an opportunity, "It sounds like we're gonna be going into the caves soon! So, just remember that I'm the leader and we'll get through this just fine! Since I'm obviously the biggest and strongest", she puffed out her tiny chest, "It's just natural that the strong would lead the weak!"

She kissed her miniscule bicep and then grabbed her shoulder and rotated her arm like she was about to punch someone.

Yue Nara"Stop... being alive. It's embarrassing."
_______________________________________________
Yue wasn't as quick to leave as Bakuto was. She looked to Ichika first for a sign that that Hideo person was actually right, that Yue was being handed off to him. All things told, she felt like a novelty gift no one wanted, the way they kept shuffling her and passing her off to this person or that person. Was that why all the jounin had gathered together? To carve up the genin between each other? And they'd stuffed her with the guy that none of them liked nor trusted. They hadn't said it out loud, but it was obvious they didn't care for the man. Yue couldn't really blame them either, he was creepy, rude, and... weird. So of course they'd throw her, the Aburame, and Bakuto with the creepy and weird one. Great... Team Creep...

Or like... Team Trash, since they were being thrown away.

She didn't know anything about the Kumo girl except that she had a scar on her eye and, judging by how she and that six-armed girl talked, she probably wasn't even the leader of her team. She was probably just refuse like the rest of them. None of the really powerful shinobi had been assigned under Hideo, Natsuo and she were more support, Bakuto wasn't like... one of the powerful Uchiha like Rina, for example, probably the Kumo girl was the weak one of her group too. Yue supposed that meant that they weren't expected to see combat, since they'd all probably just die if they ran into other shinobi. They were... maybe scouts. Okay... Yue was a good scout. Natsuo, with his bugs, was a good scout to. Bakuto could be a last resort, like a defender. So then the Kumo girl had to be... uh... she didn't look like a medic or another scout. Maybe she was a fighter type. She had to have gotten that scar somehow. Front line. Okay... not the worst set up...

Team... uh... Watcher... or Back Up. Probably Back Up...

That was if her assignment was even real. But judging by Ichika's eyes, they were. She wasn't fighting Hideo's order nor countermanding it. She frowned even harder than when that man had embarrassed her, calling her out singularly like he did. She blushed angrily and held her breath in an attempt to stymy the mortifying memory of that humiliation and ran after Bakuto, taking just a moment to try to sense him. He hadn't a huge lead on her, but she would have to work to catch up. She had no idea where Hideo was.

Yue was quick on her feet, though she didn't like having to keep up her speed in an extended way. Moving quickly was sort of a matter of thinking about it and keeping up focus on something so uninvolving... it was boring after a fashion. It was different when you were willing yourself to dodge or dash into or away from someone, but the effort was mentally draining and she'd been at it all day.

"...we are children with those weird faces...", she heard Bakuto say quixotically as she started to close the gap a little. Soon enough, though, she passed a picture or two of strange ogres making, well, weird faces. Was Bakuto saying that the team was a team of ogres like the pictures? She guessed that Hideo had probably made the pictures as waypoints, was Bakuto implying that they were supposed to be pictures of the team? Yue wasn't sure she saw the resemblance to, at least the others... But maybe he noticed that she resembled them. Eh... probably not. He probably didn't even remember her.

How weird was it that Hideo would paint anything, though? She hadn't known him long, but it was difficult to imagine him having habits. He seemed like the kind of person that... She didn't know... lived in a closet and like... when he was given a mission, they'd open the closet, dust him off, and he'd just go. But like, though the ogre faces were pretty crude, but they were more expressive than you'd expect if you were just painting something slap dash. The lines were expressive, like calligraphy. So... Hideo was more precise than he seemed.

Hm... maybe they weren't just back up, then...

If she thought about it, the team was also perfect for ambush. Her's and Natsuo's support abilities were great for taking an enemy unaware. Bakuto was a quiet type with a lot of tricks, he was great for sneaking up behind someone. Probably the Kumo girl was also good at taking someone down quickly. If this was true, then all the powerful shinobi not being on their team meant the others were probably heavy assault while Yue and the rest took the enemy by surprise. Yeah... Like, the others would form two teams, one for front assault and another to flank... Clever.

So then she was Team Assassin.

Then again, she didn't even know what the mission was or what their target was or even where they were going. She was probably completely wrong. She scoffed at her own overthinking and pushed forward. When she finally reached the supposed destination, Hideo was in a kind of sprawled-sitting position and offering Bakuto something out of a bag.

"Gummy Stars", he said with a big smile on his face, "You like candy, right? Kids like candy."

Yue frowned and crossed her arms.

Hiro Hyuuga"A dog must obey. Stay down."

Once Hiro had landed, finding the others was simple. Unlike them, he'd prevented himself from being knocked too far by way of using revolving heaven mid-air, which gave him the wherewithal to observe and think. The duck jounin Kamoji wasn't anywhere near where they'd left him... but likewise did not seem to be in range of his eyes. Did he have... some method of hiding himself, even from the all-seeing Byakugan? No... That was impossible. He had to have run out of range. Perhaps he had some method of tracking them from a distance. Hiro supposed that meant that they had a little time. They would need it.

Jin, it seemed, had picked a fight with a random bear and Misaki had, he supposed, wisely decided to hide up a tree and left Jin to his fate. But as appealing as leaving Jin to be eaten by a bear may have been, Hiro would not be able to make such a decision, as much as Jin grated on him. Like any good leader, he would have to be accountable for the excesses of who he led. You could not lead who you would abandon. It was one of the many lessons he'd learned from his father and one of the many responsibilities laid on him by the village. The price of pride and privilege was just that responsibility. If you could not live up to your birthright, you did not deserve it nor the pride that went along with it. He had to get Misaki. He had to help Jin. He had to defeat that bear. He was a Hyuuga. He was the son of the White-Eyed Tiger. Leading two ninja against a bear was as nothing next to that.

"It isn't becoming of you to hide from a fight. Forgive me, if it is mistaken to have thought you someone that does not run away", said Hiro when he was beneath Misaki's tree. He'd said it quiet enough, but Misaki heard him anyway. She hugged her skirt to her legs, hopped down agilely to a lower branch, and hissed, "You mean like the guy getting batted around by that bear?"

And true to her word, Jin was tossed into another tree. If he wasn't wearing his helmet, he probably would have been knocked unconscious, but instead he got right back up and barreled at the creature, outrunning the bees chasing after him.

"I thought you believed yourself to possess greater ability than Kani-san", Hiro continued, "It is a trifling thing to defeat a bear."

He turned his back on her and began to walk towards the bear, "It could be that the standards in Suna are different. Perhaps I have asked too much."

As dimly as he viewed Jin, he wasn't ignorant of the crab's toughness, the boy loved to boast his endurance and even Hiro knew he was a veritable brick wall. That he'd survived as long as he had being slashed about with the bear's massive strength was a testament to that endurance. Hiro would have to be more careful. However, it was a beast, its accuracy would not be even close to that of a trained shinobi. So long as he could prevent himself from being hit, or especially slashed, he would have the upper hand quickly.

"You aren't Konoha", said Misaki from behind, having apparently jumped down from her tree.

"I am the least of it", Hiro replied without looking back at her, "and I will defeat this bear."

Just at that moment, Jin came barreling forward, bees in tow, and leaped towards the creature. This time, however, he didn't seem to be aiming a punch. With his arms outstretched and his mouth open wide, when the bear went to swat him away, he took the force of the blow and grabbed onto its arm like a tick. In fact, he sunk his teeth into its fur and growled through it, "Rrrrrrr Ananikey Jim Komi!!!!"

With his face firmly buried in the bear's fur, which he found himself stuck to because of the leaking honey from his helmet, the bees could not find adequate purchase on his skin to continue stinging and took to attacking the bear instead. The bear, mostly ignored the bees, but batted them off of his nose and sneezed at them. This was the opportunity that Hiro needed. Rushing forward, Hiro aimed a blow to the creature's torso, which was completely open and struck... only to find... his blow had only caused the bear to belch. What was this? The bear didn't even seem to notice with Jin stuck stalwartly to his arm!

"I thought defeating a bear was a trifle", chimed in Misaki with a smirk. Hiro frowned and jumped backwards.

"I need to strike its head", Hiro replied coolly, "Distract it."

"Why? It's Jin. He seems to be doing fine on his own", said Misaki. Hiro, for the first time, looked directly into Misaki's eyes. He was glaring murderously.

"Kani-san is our teammate. That is reason enough", Hiro almost whispered. If she was going to act like nothing more than a common dog, then she would have to be disciplined like one. Hiro would not allow an insubordinate- At this point, the bear was waving around his arm like a windmill as Jin's teeth had finally hit blood! Just how hard had he been biting that he was able to get through the bear's thick hide? Hiro supposed he would claim that the jaws of the crab were... stupendous, maybe, despite crabs not having jaws to speak of.

"Now", he demanded and Misaki startled, but also startled to life, rushing towards the bear with incredible speed and making what would be a low sweeping kick if it was aimed at a human, but it was a fairly medium-height sweep to the thing's knee. There was a crack of thunder on impact and its leg pushed off the ground, tilting the
beast while it swung its Jin-entrenched arm to try to regain balance! This was the chance he'd been waiting for...

Hiro's blow was true this time, landing dead center on the beast's third eye with as much chakra as he could blast through its skull! The bear's eyes looked in several directions at once before...

Poof!

The whole creature vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving only the bees and a box. Jin fell to the ground got up and proclaimed "I hath defeated nature with my stupendous Kani teeth! There are no teeth mightier than those of the amazing crab!"

After escaping the bees, the trio found themselves even deeper in the woods. Just what was the box? Was that bear really a set up? A transformed clone? Then the box must be a part of the test. He looked it over with his Byakugan. It didn't seem trapped. It was some kind of... he opened it up and there was a note in it. As Hiro read it, a very distinct song began to play. The note read:

"Good job my geeeenin!
You managed to defeat a bear!
Try to hit Kamooooji with the time you have to spaaaaare!"

A chill ran down Hiro's spine and he heard a whoosh. It was.... KAMOJI'S HAMMER!

Flying from seemingly nowhere, the hammer careened towards the trio too suddenly for anyone to react and the three were knocked ever deeper into the woods... Just what would come next?
THOUGH! WE'VE ONLY ONE TEAM LEFT FOR LEAF AND ARE NOW TRYING TO FILL TEAMS FOR THE OTHER VILLAGES!

Jira scoffed and crossed his arms as Koji-sensei ran off. So it was a game of capture the flag, aye? Well, playing a game like that with an Inuzuka was just asking for trouble and if sensei was going to try to stop them, then he'd have to make sure that he wasn't around to be stopped. He could only hope that the rest of his "teammates" weren't about to get in his way! He sniffed the air twice and rushed forward. If sensei had any sense in his head, he'd probably try to form a perimeter around the scroll first. Then he'd... probably try to take them out one by one, but Jira had a secret weapon: His sense of smell and Komi's tenaciousness! They were excellent trackers. Jira just had to be the last one to be caught and he'd make it.

Sure the others could serve as a distraction, he knew particularly that Naruko could do that clone jutsu and that other lewd one that got her in trouble with the teachers, but they couldn't match Jira's speed or senses. As he was sprinting towards the spot, he jumped up in the air and felt his body changing, as it always did when he utilized his clan's four legs technique. When he landed, it was on all fours and he bounded forward at much greater speed, his claws gaining much greater purchase as he did so. He was following sensei's trail and listening for his movements. He was quiet... and that made Jira nervous.

He'd probably planned for him, probably had traps set up too. He'd have to be on alert. He wasn't stupid. A jounin was way more experienced than he was... but a trap was a trap. As soon as he was close enough, he'd stop and reassess, but gaining ground was important too. You couldn't leave sensei too much time or who knew what he was going to do? Heck, who knew what his two henchmen were going to do either? Unlike some ninja, he didn't just barrel ahead without thinking about things. H-he had a plan, even if there were a lot of unknowns in that plan. He'd figure it out as he went... Right? Yeah. He'd pass easily. He supposed that meant everyone else would too. They were lucky to have him on the team. Yeah. Right. Lucky!

He was just glad his sensei didn't look like the stupid musclebound type. Jira didn't know if he would have been able to stand it.

Komi stayed right by his side, his constant companion, the only one he could rely on.

Hideo Sarutobi"Compromise is a lie told to abdicate duty."

Hideo nodded and looked to Botan, "If this is acceptable to Nakano-san...", and Botan nodded back before Hideo continued, "then we will gather our forces and go. It would be better to wait until night, but there is not time... there are more forces coming to collect our target. If we don't secure the target before they arrive, there is no chance of success. We will all die. Try not to, if you can."

He looked to Botan again and said, "I will need coordinates."

"Oh... yes...", Botan stammered, handing Hideo a small scrap of paper. Hideo took it, opened it with a glance, and then ate it. Botan looked a bit worried, "It... was encoded..."

"Poorly", Hideo responded with a happy nod. He smiled and let out a sigh, his hand slipping to the weapon on his back but regardless, he straightened up and cheerfully walked towards the genin, pointing to Natsuo and Bakuto with a "you and you and..." and turned to the Kumo genin. Botan, who had been watching him with a kind of hang-dog expression gave Ari a look, which Hideo seemed to pick up on. He pointed to her "and you... AND NARA-CHAN", Yue emerged glaring angrily from behind a tree with red cheeks and a murderous expression, "You are coming with me!"

And without another word, he was away.

Along the way, he left various crudely drawn faces of Oni pinned to passing trees, each with various expressions, some angry, some sad, some laughing... but all cartoonishly expressive, despite looking as if they were painted haphazardly. Hideo moved swiftly through the trees, much faster than he'd ran earlier, outpacing the genin significantly. He reached the area he supposed the cave to be hidden and immediately set about testing the earth and soil. His eyes searched around wildly, though his face remained completely relaxed. Eventually, they settled on a rockface. Amateurish... or a show of confidence... or pressure. No, confidence. The clones would be useful.

He looked around the rockface to find what he was looking for, covered in mud and transformed, a tag, a rock whose shadow mismatched. He pulled it off and a cave revealed itself. He crushed the tag underfoot, leaned against the rest of the rockface, and took a somewhat large bag of gummy stars out of his ninja pouch. It was always nice when he had a few spare moments. Gummy stars were perfect for it. Unlike candy stars, you could swallow them at a moment's notice without worrying about whether or not they may get stuck in your throat. Even in a combat situation, it was easy enough to swallow, if you needed to. He supposed he'd give them to the kids when they arrived. Kids liked candy. His face fell for a moment and he frowned, looking off at nothing, and then he collapsed into a motionless, blank, sitting position with his legs sprawled out, his arms rags at his side, and his head too heavy to keep up, as if all the life had gone out of him.

The others were sure to arrive soon.

Yue Nara"Stop... being alive. It's embarrassing."

Nearby, Remi was giving a lame speech about... arms or something... and nobody seemed very interested. His teammate bailed immediately, which is what Yue felt like doing too. Unfortunately, Natsuo beat her to the punch and left to talk to the Kumo-nin before she had a chance to make a quiet exit. Great. She was stuck with Tomoyuki. See, on a team, there were usually three kids. Three kids meant that Yue could stand in the back and not draw attention to herself and no one would ask her to say anything. It also meant that if she slipped away for a second, no one would notice right away. Why would they?

But now that Natsuo was gone, Yue was stuck. It just felt awkward standing there not saying anything and the longer it went on, the more the pressure just built and built. 'Jeeze, Tomo, why don't you say anything', she thought vulnerably in his direction while retreating into her hat, scarf, and pockets, only her eyes and, more importantly, her tense furrowed eyebrows visible now. E-even if he did want to say something, Yue didn't want to talk to him anyway... Her fingers fumbled with her final dumpling in her pocket and suddenly she remembered just how hungry she was. She glanced around as discretely as possible, her eyes finding what looked like a good tree to hide behind. Of course the problem remained... how to walk away discreetly when there were only two of them...

Sh-she had to say something. Like she couldn't just walk away. That'd be... she didn't know... like rude.

Ugh... Why was he making this so difficult? She turned her face towards him slightly, not enough to be facing him, she didn't want him to think she wanted to really talk to him or anything, but enough that he... like... would know she was going to say something. Nothing? No? Eh... Okay. Then... Uh...

She nodded.

And walked towards the trees. She passed Bakuto as she went, but paid him no mind. If he didn't want to talk to people either, she wasn't about to bother him. She could respect someone else's solitude... even though people rarely respected hers. When she was quite sure she was out of sight, she reached into her pocket and very discreetly popped the dumpling into her mouth, using her tongue instead of her jaws to chew, since if someone was watching, for whatever reason, they'd be less likely to notice she was eating. The last thing she wanted was for someone to use her dumpling as an opportunity to try to strike up a conversation. What could she even say about a dumpling? It was a dumpling... Her dad gave it to her because her mom kept feeding her weird health slop. Yeah, like anyone would want to hear about that. Totally stupid story.

"Worried about your first day, little bro?"

"Why would I be worried? I earned my place here!"

It was a rare moment. Ichi and Ni stood on the patio of the house, for once alone together. Ichi's wide grin with his hands placed so carefree behind his head, his easy stance, he towered above his little brother. Ni, meanwhile, kept his arms folded across his chest and glared determinately away, almost holding his breath, almost baring his teeth. Ichi put his hand on Ni's head and ruffled his hair affectionately. Ni raised his shoulders against him.

"It's okay if you are", said Ichi, "I just about pissed my pants on my first day. I was so nervous, I started laughing and punching at everything... Hahah! My jounin bruised me up so bad!"

"Yeah, well I'm not you. I prepared for this. You should have brought a diaper", said Ni, flippantly. Why did Ichi force him to wait for him before he left? Was he too stupid to know that he was just annoying? Probably. Maybe he was trying to fill Ni with doubt. What an idiot! As if Ichi could do something like that. He obviously underestimated Ni's resolve.

"Hahaha, yeah, probably", Ichi replied carelessly, "It's so cool I get to see my little brother go off and become a ninja too. It's like... I never really thought it would happen. I don't know, it's just cool, you know?"

"That's because you don't think about anything. Are you gonna be just as amazed when San gets to be a genin too?"

"Heh, I guess not", said Ichi, "I don't know. I didn't think about it."

"Keh... Of course it's no surprise that San would become a ninja...", said Ni resentfully.

"You're right about that", Ichi said obliviously. Ni's fists tightened. It was just like Ichi to make it clear just how much worse he was than the rest of them. He always knew just how to rub it in his face... And on his first day! Why did he have to be like this?!? Ni couldn't stand it anymore. He turned around to face his brother, his teeth clenched, his shoulders raised, and Komi licking his clenched fist to try to get him to calm down, mewing softly and running around his feet. It worked, a little... Ni pushed his jaw forward.

"It's my day, okay? My day", he said.

"That's right", Ichi replied and made a determined fist, "And if anyone makes fun of your height, just make sure they know that I'll be there to take care of them!"

Ni's eyes went completely wide and he threw a punch right at Ichi's face. Ichi caught it with an open hand and replied, "That's a good punch, Ni. Keep working on it and no one will ever give you any trouble!"

And he made a thumbs up pose.

Ni, meanwhile, had gone completely blank. He just stared at his brother, white as a sheet of paper, and turned around. He didn't hear Ichi say goodbye, didn't see him waiving, didn't even realize he'd been walking until he was halfway through town and almost to the shinobi academy. Had he been on autopilot the whole time? Komi snuggled his leg and he finally looked down. Stupid... He'd walked clear in the other direction... Training Ground 31 was on the opposite side of the village! He knelt down and pet his pup.

"Don't worry... I'm not gonna let him have the last word", he said and hugged Komi to his chest, his eyes welling up a little, which only made him angrier, "Ugh... l-let's get to our team. We're real ninja now."

Komi barked happily and it made Ni smile. He stood back up and Komi ran happily around his legs as they made their way to the training grounds...

...The others arrived at around the same time Jira did and a man descended from the trees shortly after that, explaining that he was a man named Koji and that they all had to prove themselves to him or be sent back to the academy or be killed. His clothes did smell of blood.

"Keh! You're the sensei huh? Well, do your worst. I'm not going to be turned away now or ever by anyone", he declared, crossing his arms. Komi barked twice in emphasis.
