Bump.
Quantity =/= quality is a weak argument in my eyes because;

  • Quality in writing is subjective - this makes this a cop out answer. A lot of roleplaying writers, here and elsewhere, think their writing is god-tier awesome when really it's shit tier quality fanfic selfservice.
  • Quantity is not inherently linked with quality but more often than not qualitatively great posts have a larger quantity of information (and therefore, higher quantity of words) than low quality post -- there is certainly a link between the two.
  • Writing is not about quality, writing is not about quantity, writing is about how much you enjoy writing the post, and roleplaying is about how much you enjoy writing the post and how much others enjoy reading your post. If you are content reading one liners until 5 am in the morning then I'd say that the roleplay hits the perfect spot for you. Personally I can't do that because it doesn't interest me. It's not a quality I look for in a roleplay.
  • Subjective and personal take that come from my own experience (i.e. anecdotes) but the people who put QUALITY IS NOT QUANTITY REEE at the top of their interest check are also often the same people who write a small paragraph that parrots exactly what your post said without adding anything new to it. Quality =/= quantity, sure, but your post has neither. I'd rather read purple prose than a rehash of what I already wrote for you.
[@RenBen] Have fun Ren.
Hello New, I'm dad!
@Ammokkx The only other site I frequent has only one section, but they have a vetting system that forces new players to 'apply' before they can access the full forum. Keeps out a lot of the garbage. Other than that I completely agree with you, I just threw that 'option' (it's not really an option) out there to vent my frustration with the system we have as is. RPN doesn't have the best population in my opinion regardless so I wouldn't venture there even if they did have a separation.
Anne Rice. Who the fuck is she? Got her three times with my most recent pieces. :/
Let people RP with their friends in peace. Yeah there's guidelines for what should be in each section, but demanding any enforcement is like looking at your neighbour's backyard and telling them they must plant roses rather than tulips when your own garden only has seeds.

I see you are team #fuckHOA too. Good.

I don't really agree with the general theme of OP's post but I also don't agree that there should be no standards whatsoever. We've complained about the names and descriptions of the 3 sections for ages now and I've even suggested a change to them at some point to reflect the 3 sections better at some point but I never got any feedback on it.

The way I saw it and still see it is that rather than advertise 'levels' of roleplaying (which can be elitist, although that is a thing more of the past on RPG and nowadays there is not as much elitism) which makes it seem like 'free' roleplaying is somehow worse than 'advanced' roleplaying, as if being able to splurg 5 pages of word vomit on a post would somehow be better by definition than a one liner.

It should instead focus on levels of dedication and a 'minimum' tag should be created that allows the GM to reflect the minimum level of words in a post; from one liners to '2-3 paragraphs' to '5+' to 'novella length' so that the section titles/descriptions can reflect the level of dedication required for an RP. Free RP would be something like rapid fire one-off short stories, casual would transform into your run of the mill RP where a post every few days is perfect, and advanced would be for those writers who take multiple weeks or longer to cook up a post.

Indirectly you will see many more novella length RP's in the latter section, but at least it seems less arbitrary and contrived.

At the moment I'd almost be inclined to suggest reducing the amount of sections and just doing away with free, casual and advanced and instead make one section; group roleplays. Because as it stands everyone throws their roleplay into casual anyway because you wanna catch a lot of fish and you need to catch a big net for that. Why go fishing in free/advanced where there are far less fish? You don't fish in a lake when you have the Atlantic ocean available to you.
Codename Odin woke up in the middle of some bushes off the side of the road just besides the airport. Cause of the rude awakening: someone was playing "hide the penis" in the bushes just to the right of him. Such rituals were unknown to the young Xorplak, who chose as the Dutch liked to say "eggs for his money," whatever the hell that meant.

Codename Odin was still wanted by the Xorplak government so he needed to fit in with the rest of the 'humans' near him. That's why he'd slept in the bushes, since that seemed to be an Australian pasttime. Before sleeping he had consumed copious amounts of alcohol, but alcohol did little to the Xorplakians and so it had no effect, it only made him seem more Australian.

He had heard great tales of a fellow superhero named Jace and Codename Odin had figured the best course of action would be to find this aspiring superhero and help him manifest his IBS powers. He left quickly, leaving the rustling bushes behind to find this legendary 'Jace'.

Name:
His true name is unknown to everyone due to being an undercover superhero but he goes by codename Odin

Age:
23 in human years, 2 in Xorplak years (his homeplanet) where he has only just entered infancy stage

Powers:
Latent IBS powered prolapse gun mounted on his backside, depressive aura that can infect anyone with toxic bitterness, anger and depression

Bio:
He was born on Xorplak but had to leave during his first year on that planet (aprox. 10-12 human years) after a coup killed his father (Xorplak ruler) and decimated his family either by execution or imprisonment in forced labor camps. Codename Odin was one of the few to escape and his crash pod ended up on Earth where he was rescued by a loving farmer and his wife. Unfortunately they were killed in a freak car accident. Or was it...

He has roamed earth ever since and decided to make his home in Melbourne, Australia because it reminds him of the eternal suffering his life is, since nobody has a more tragic backstory than him. When looking for likeminded characters, think of Nagato Uzumaki (Pain) from Naruto, whose life is possibly just as tragic as his -- of course, he is a fictional character and Codename Odin is not, so his suffering is still greater.
