Daphne was left with a vivid green flush on her face after Bex retreated.
"That went better than I expected"

She watched Bex approach the rest of the Team. The girl definitely had a strong personality and she wasn't the only one. There were going to some heated arguments in the future, that much was sure. Literal heat this time, she watched the montage of Bex, her brows furrowing together. Best stay out of her hair when she's angry. Daphne watched the rest of the team, most of them were talking to each other. Zach was being heavily questioned and asked for advice, being the leader this time around.

Still no word on Hex and Gold Rush. Daphne listened to Batman talking to Talon. She could understand where he was coming from. It seemed like their former team mates were so easily replaced. Outright stating they didn't trust Bex and Maya wasn't going to help the situation. Daphne was going to listen to Batman and be the friendly face of the Team. She approached Maya and thought of a funny way to open the conversation.

"I would actually survive if you missed a throw" Daphne laughed. If knives didn't still make her squeamish she would have volunteered. For now though she could wait to end up as a salad.
"Hi welcome to the Team, I'm Daphne but on missions I go by Nymph"

"Batman. Has Zatana found anything new about Hex? Or Gold Rush? We've been left in the dark for days now. And is it really wise for us to go into the field already with these two? We don't know what they can do."

Batman narrowed his eyes at Talon. Given Talon's background Batman attempted some leniency when dealing with hotheaded youth. This wasn't one of those times.
"As said previously Hex and Gold Rush are League business, when we know something so will the Team"
He turned towards the mission briefing screens, seemingly ignoring Talon's stab at the new recruits. He touched the interactive interface and pulled up the profiles of Demonslayer and She-devil. The computerized voice of the Zeta Tubes started to narrate the capabilities of both team members. With the montages playing in the background Batman returned his attention to Talon and the rest of the team. He was sure there existed doubt between them. Fact of the matter was, they were down two recruits, each mission proved more challenging than the next. Piece by piece they were figuring out what exactly their unidentified enemy was planning. They needed all the help they could get.

"Both recruits have been through the same selection process as each of you" He let that sink in for a few minutes.
"You will treat them as members of this Team" It wasn't a question, his tone made that clear.

The montages behind Batman stopped playing and transitioned into the earlier images of Haly's circus.
"We want you to get to the circus grounds ahead of the performances, get to know the area and employees."
"There is a fair happening at the same time, use that to your advantage and remain inconspicuous."

The circus and the Team's performance wouldn't be until the evening. The Team would have most of the afternoon to enjoy themselves at the fair, something Batman didn't explicitly state was the purpose, but the ample amount of leisure time was odd. Haly's circus was passing through Gotham and would set up just outside of the city. The Team would have to take the Zeta Tube and make their way to the location by subway or taxi. The jeep was still out of use due to the antics of Viktor and Alisa.

0757, Friday

"Hm." Viktor eyed his surroundings, his eyes briefly stopping at each large tree surrounding his position. Quiet and only a click away from the HQ. Hidden away in nature Viktor found solace. Removing a knife from his cargo pocket, he approached one of the large trees. He'd start here.

0810, Friday

Daphne squinted, staring at the forest surrounding the HQ. She tried to recall which trails she walked before. They all kind of looked alike. The teen girl shrugged, it didn’t matter all that much. She plugged in her headphones and turned on her current favorite. There were a whole bunch of plants left to discover. It was a fun upside to her power, it turned a simple walk in the forest into a treasure hunt.

0850, Friday

Beep beep beep beep! Beep beep beep beep!

Viktor shot a glare at his digital watch and quickly shut off the beeping that indicated a quick stopping point. Reason being that he wanted to look over everything from the files collected during their mission. Not all the team were "morning persons" and even fewer would start their day reading files. This would give him the chance to look them over on his own. Maybe even take them to his room.

He eyed his work carved into the bark of the tree with the same stoic look he gave most things before stabbing his knife deep into the tree, right below the carving. And with that, Viktor made his way toward the HQ.

0858, Friday

“Nope I already have this one…...or is this different?”

Daphne quietly talked to herself, looking at two leaves sitting on top of the other cuttings she collected. She frowned, determining the differentiating qualities about each. It wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Every leaf was different but some really looked alike. She stared at the path in front of her with a thoughtful expression. Would it really matter if she got some plants mixed up?

She would figure it out later. There were plenty of botanical books in the library. Passing by the treeline, something caught her eye. It shimmered and it was stuck in the base of a tree. She walked up to it. It was a knife….

The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. An uncomfortable feeling settled in her stomach. Over half of the blade disappeared into the bark, her first instinct was to pull it out. Daphne pulled out her headphones and turned off her music. If the owner of the knife was coming back she wanted to hear them coming.

Daphne’s hands were trembling long before they reached for the hilt. She pulled at it and quickly realized she needed to put a little more muscle behind it. With one foot on the base of the tree, she steadied herself and pulled again.

It wasn’t budging. Her face flushed green at the effort she put in. After a couple more attempts she was forced to give up. Whoever put it in there was strong. She sat down in front of the tree. There was a carving right at the base, she hadn’t seen it when she zeroed in on the knife. It piqued her curiosity.

It looked unfinished, but if she used her imagination she could kind of see a face. She brushed her fingers past what could be considered a mouth. Daphne transformed. There was something she wanted to try. She touched the center of the lips and imagined the remaining facial features of the tree.
“He...Hello?”

“It is morning…”
Daphne raised her brows in surprise, almost pulling her hand back. She’d never gotten a response this quick and especially not on her first try.

1207, Friday

With light footsteps and now sporting a backpack, Viktor approached the tree he had jabbed his knife into.

"I think I can finish you with what I brought." He said as removed his backpack and set it on the ground. He then dug into his backpack and removed a hammer and a few different-sized chisels, laying them out on the forest ground. Before choosing what might be the most appropriate chisel, he stood up to face the tree. "Hmm."

Viktor gave the tree a long stare before removing the knife with a swift tug. He sheathed and pocketed it though he was sure he'd need it for finer cuts along the way. Grabbing a chisel and hammer, he went to work on the tree. He worked swiftly yet meticulously on carving the face of a bare-faced middle-aged man with a pensive expression. He then moved to another. This one, this time a smiling woman with long still hair down the sides of her face. She appeared welcoming while the male face appeared unapproachable.

It had taken a few hours, but Viktor had gotten two trees done. He packed up his equipment before noticing a smaller-sized shoe print than his own at the base of the first tree. He looked around, remaining as quiet as possible, but all he could hear were the natural sounds of the forest and hadn't spotted anyone either. He looked back at the print and shrugged it off before making his way back to HQ.

1428, Friday

Daphne skipped lunch, getting by on sunlight and a couple of sips from her water bottle. It was something she didn’t do often because it still freaked her out a little. The hunger went away and she felt full without eating. Usually she did eat something after her photosynthesis, more so to retain a sense of normalcy, not because she needed it.

She decided to stop collecting for the day. It was almost getting to be too much work to process them all into her diary. She enjoyed it, but at the same time didn’t feel like spending the remainder of the day cooped up inside the library trying to match up her cuttings to their plant family.

Back at the HQ Daphne went to the lounge. She was in the mood to bake something. Opening the tap to wash her hands she thought about what to make. Yesterday she saw a whole bunch of cherries in the fridge. If they survived Ja’s feeding frenzy she could make a cherry cake. With her fingers crossed she opened the fridge. Two tubs full of dark red cherries were safe and sound.

“Awesome!”

She whipped up a cake studded with halved cherries and popped it in the oven in under twenty minutes. It filled the kitchen with the sweet smell of pastry. Meanwhile she was sorting out her cuttings.
Awh no…..
Her face fell when she saw one of the leaves got ripped. She looked at it up close, trying to recall which tree it had come from. Daphne was pretty sure it was from the tree with the mouth carved into it. That wasn’t too far from HQ, she could swipe one more after the cake was done.

1519, Friday

Viktor entered the lounge with sweat glistening his face and damp gym clothes, one of the sets Daphne had purchased for him. Plain black shorts and a dark blue sleeveless shirt with a winky face emoji at the center of it.

The faint smell of dessert had led him here from the gym. Dessert was not always his go-to meal post workout, but he couldn't help but at least investigate the cake that sat on the counter with only a slice or two cut from it. Not hesitating, as he thought of the short-lived existence of this cake once Ja inevitably caught a whiff of it, he cut himself a small slice. He wondered who had baked it as he bit into it. He'd have to commend them for a job well done. Looking around first, he cut a second live and moved to the couches where he could watch some bad television.

1552, Friday

Daphne was standing in front of the same tree she went to earlier. She was dumbfounded staring at the two carved faces, a look of disbelief on her face. She kneeled down and brought her face closer to the carving, looking at the details up close. Their noses nearly touched and she smiled, leaning back.

They were so lifelike…
It gave her a sense of wonder, like seeing something beautiful for the first time. It could just be her, but for some reason the faces seemed to make talking to trees easier. She decided to test it again. Daphne brushed the angry brow of the male tree.
Turn your frown upside down, she joked.

“Can I borrow one more leaf?” She asked, keeping her verdant fingers against the bark.
“Take one, yes” The tree replied, the wording of the sentences the plants made was a little different to human speech, but Daphne was getting used to it.

1552, Friday

A deliberate audible crunch of leaves was made by Viktor as he entered the small clearing where Daphne and the two carved trees were located. His eyebrows furrowed as he had caught the one he believed left the shoe print from earlier.

"What are you doing here?" Viktor asked as if Daphne was trespassing.

Viktor startled her. She jumped up from the grass, the scare transforming her back immediately. The teen girl swallowed and regained her composure. Daphne brushed some dirt from her knees and gave Viktor a wary look.

“I was….talking to this tree.”
It was probably time to go back to HQ. She retrieved her bag and tucked the leaf in between the pages of a book. She took a couple of steps forward, ready to leave. Viktor would have surely let her too, but Black Canary's advice from yesterday nagged at him.

"Daphne. You can continue talking to the… grumpy tree. I just didn't expect you to be here… again." He was sure it was her who arrived earlier.

Again…?
Daphne’s brows furrowed together, she was confused. He was right she’d been here earlier today, but how did he know that? He dubbed it the grumpy tree, probably because of the carving. It did look kind of grumpy, with a scrunched up face. Kind of like…..Viktor actually.
Looking at the similarities between her teammate and the tree was probably going to make her laugh. She looked away from both the tree and Viktor, thinking about what she could say.

“Actually it’s….”
Daphne definitely progressed in her communication with plants. Some things were still challenging though. The things they said to her were more primal, similar to perhaps an animal. They spoke about needing water, light, and protection. Other times it was like she was talking to a person and they were able to understand and comprehend complex parts of life. She stopped herself from saying anything negative about her powers in front of Viktor.
“Never mind” Viktor raised an eyebrow as to him, this meant she was holding something back.

“You know what’s funny…” Daphne started, turning back to face the trees.
“Those faces help me talk to them, for some reason it makes it much easier”

"Does it?" Daphne nodded. She couldn’t explain it, but it did.
He looked around all of the other trees around that could be prospects for his hobby. "Lucky for you there will be more trees with faces among other things out here in due time… What do they even tell you? How do they feel about what I've done?" He was curious.

Viktor’s sudden interest in her powers caught her off guard. She glanced at him, an unsure look on her face. Not being yelled or sneered at was strange, his behaviour confused her. Daphne decided to trust this was a genuine conversation.
“It depends on what they want to say, sometimes they ask me for things they need, or share what they’ve seen happen”

Potential to be used as spies…

She paused, not catching on right away. Feel about what he did?
Wait…..
Viktor made those faces? Did he….
Daphne blinked a couple of times, the surprises kept coming. She tried for a small smile at Viktor, instead of the usual deer caught in headlights look she often had around him.
“I don’t know what they think about it, but I like them.” Her answer didn't seem to shift his expression. Viktor was not hungry for validation, so there was a bit of an awkward silence between them.

"Thanks, Daphne." He turned away to start walking back, but turned his head so he could see her behind him "Coming?"
She glanced back at the trees, deciding between the grumpy tree or the grumpy guy. She went with the latter and followed Viktor. Daphne had her eyes on his back. For once she didn't feel like she was reporting for duty when talking to Viktor. It was nice.

The first couple of days after La Hoya weren't great for Daphne. She spent a lot of time by herself, keeping busy with her plant diary or training with the Martian Manhunter, most of all she was trying to avoid the Team. It was a noticeable change in her behavior which she tried to cover up with thoughtful gestures. Every day she would leave some kind of baked good in the kitchen, with a note reading something along the lines of
"Eat me xxx Daphne".

She would clean parts of the HQ even when she wasn't on duty for chores. Every kind of activity which required the least amount of interaction with others became her go to. Avoiding the Team made her paranoia worse and when she did interact with them she was overthinking the interaction. Questioning if they were being nice out of pity and if they would rather see her leave.

Viktor she avoided even more than usual, it wasn´t just the odd bunch of nerves she felt around him, it had turned into a sort of panicky fight or flight response. If she happened to cross paths with him she stayed polite. She knew they had to talk, but for now she was avoiding confrontation and she could live with that. With Aleen´a Daphne had hoped on a friend to share the bulk of the mistakes made. The fact that she wasn´t the only one who messed up made her feel better. They never talked though. Daphne saw Aleen´a around HQ but neither of them approached the other for their own reasons.

The feelings of uncertainty lingered and kept her awake at night. When she stared at the dark ceiling at 3 am she thought about Casper and Felix. One day they were there and the next half of the Justice League was looking for them. The fact that their mentors hadn´t managed to find them was not a good sign. It felt strange to miss people she met just a few weeks ago.

Daphne never used to have insomnia, only experiencing it shortly after the robbery. It died down after a while and she hoped the same would happen this time around. Unexpectedly though it lead her to a 3am heart to heart with Alisa. Daphne went up to her dorm room on a particular rough night and they had tea, braided each other's hair and learned about their respective backstories.

The therapy sessions with Black Canary gave her some relief. No longer the stern combat instructor Dinah allowed her earlier motherly instincts to take the reins during their sessions. Daphne experienced for the first time in her life what it was like to have a strong female figure guiding her, giving her advice and support. It made her feel a lot better about her situation.

By the end of the week things were looking up and Daphne regained a bit of her confidence.

Daphne smoothed out the wrinkles of her dress. It was one she made weeks ago, not having the confidence to wear it out, until today. She had a good feeling about this mission. Daphne knew Haly's circus. Her favorite thing about it was the fair. She really hoped they had time to visit it before going into hero mode.

Two potential new team members entered the HQ through the Zeta tubes. Daphne's eyes followed each girl, looking them up and down. There were a whole bunch of thoughts running through her mind. Maya so far seemed to have the best attitude between them. Daphne felt ashamed at what the blonde girl was saying to Batman. She brushed her hair off of her shoulders, a vaguely green flush on her face. Batman barely reacted and introduced the girl as Bex a.k.a She-Devil as she hadn't bothered to introduce herself.

Undeterred by her bad attitude Daphne walked over to Bex, holding out her hand with a friendly smile.
"Hi, welcome to the Team, I'm Daphne..." Her look was definitely intimidating. Her brown eyes turned down and she spotted Bex's pink dr Martin boots.
"Cute boots..."
EPISODE 3 GUYS!

Some important notes
❁ The team is dealing with the simultaneous loss of both Hex and Gold Rush.
❁ Black Canary has offered therapy sessions for those who need the mental support (spoiler Daphne was the first to apply)
❁ The League has recruited new recruits who are on a trial period to unofficially replace Hex and Gold Rush, in the event that they don’t return to the initiative.
❁ Batman was far from pleased at the way Brightheart engaged Kobra at La Hoya; both her and the entire squad B (including Rain) have received a tough love speech. Kobra is all but ensured they were attacked by a Tamaranian, warning them of hero involvement in their business. As a result they’ve gone even further under the radar.
❁ Metamorph wanted to help Nymph and taught her some meditation techniques to take back control whenever her powers act out.
❁ We're going for even more immersion and adding birthdays to the sheets too! You can add the birthday in the notes section of the CS

Also the co-gm has given us al a designation for use with the Zeta Tubes. If everyone could add these to their CS shortly that would be great. I'll add it to the template too, so you know where it's supposed to go.

"C.C. Haly and Norton Bros. Circus"
For this briefing Batman had come to Mount Justice in person. There was no other leaguer present in the briefing room. Red Tornado was on urgent league business at an undisclosed location. The collection of screens were playing a montage of the Haly's Circus. A couple of minutes passed in order for the teen heroes to quietly take in the performances. The Team didn't know it yet, but they were soon going to join the ranks of the artists and performers.

“Based on the intel retrieved by Cybergirl at La Hoya we found a link between Kobra and Haly's Circus selling a component to the Kobra Cult's weapon.”

Batman drew up the schematics of the modified Kobra venom Metamorph managed to recover and take back to HQ. The container was part of the supply of Kobra venom the team had left behind at the factory. Several major cities were on a list of targets for Kobra. The League hadn’t figured out which city or what Kobra was planning. There was a chemical weapon being developed and it was unclear how and if the modified venom was involved.

On the screen next to it, a list of suspected involved circus staff members rotated, displaying their stage name and act.

“With the help of Zatanna we’ve identified possible suspects, but….”
The dark knight narrowed his eyes at the team, making sure they were all paying attention, leaving intentional pause between his sentences.
“This list is by no means exhaustive and until proven otherwise everyone could be involved. Be discerning.”

Batman paused and lowered his arms, his cape folding over his hands. He was about to state their mission objective was simple, but he knew that something simple didn’t guarantee the Team would succeed. Especially given their track record, by no means would he tolerate a repeat of what happened at La Hoya.

“Your objective is simple….”
“Infiltrate the circus, come up with an act, get close to the staff and figure out who has ties to Kobra, report to the League. Do not attempt to capture, question or in any other way harass the suspect yourselves”

With the main briefing done Batman stalked towards the zeta tubes in silence. It almost looked like he was leaving when he abruptly stopped. He checked the time and narrowed his eyes at the teleporting devices.

She’d better not be late….again.

“As stated previously Zatanna and Booster gold are attempting to find Hex and Gold Rush, that is if they can be recovered. In the meantime the League recruited new recruits to bolster your ranks and as possible replacements”

Batman was talking in a very matter of fact manner. His priority was to have a functioning Young Justice initiative. If there were casualties which threatened the already fragile balance of the team he had to take countermeasures.

Daphne's tired brown eyes darted from side to side listening intently to the extensive mission debriefing Viktor gave Talon. She flinched every time her name was mentioned. It hurt to have her mistakes pointed out for everyone to hear. She really thought she was making a well thought out decision by transforming, with her heightened pain tolerance the cold would bother her less and she could hold out longer. What ended up happening instead was her powers working against her in a way she hadn't expected.

"But Nymph simply does not belong on this team and I'm sure even she would agree with that fact."

The teen girl covered her ears with her hands, not wanting to listen anymore. She stood up from her seat, feeling a pang in her chest. She retreated to the back of the jet. Obviously she knew she messed up, but did he really have to be that harsh? She didn't do it on purpose. Of course she would have warned Ja if she could, being on the comms was her opportunity to keep everyone safe by giving them important information. Even worse, she wasn't sure she disagreed with Viktor. Maybe she didn't belong here. She'd never been sure of herself as a superhero. The main reasons she joined the initiative were to help people with her powers and to get away from home for a while. It was both an escape and an opportunity to learn to use her powers.

It was unfair, she had her powers for half a year at most. Shortly after the robbery her dad immediately started weekly sessions of extensive studying. Every week they discovered something new. Even without him she was still uncovering the extent of her meta human abilities.
How could she have known her powers would react this way?
She would have had to torture herself in a cooling cell. Her thoughts were jumping every which way, from agreeing with Viktor to being angry at the unfairness of the situation. It exhausted her already tired body. She just had to not think for a couple of minutes.

Daphne knelt down onto the floor, close to one of the heater units on the jet. With her hands on her ears she drowned out the noise around her. She took a few deep breaths, focusing her attention on emptying her mind, recalling her lessons with the Martian Manhunter. At first her negative thoughts kept creeping back in, but she kept at it. After a while her mind started to calm down. Her body sensed the calmness and started to revert back slowly, body and mind again working as one. The bark retreated, freeing up her face and the wilted leaves were restored to brunette waves. Daphne sighed in relief and managed a tiny smile. She felt a little proud of herself right now.

She turned back to her team and made her way back to her seat quietly, avoiding eye contact. Everyone had been fawning over her and she didn't want to cause any more trouble and prove Viktor right. Daphne retrieved a cherry jam sandwich from her bag and took a small bite, staring out of the window of the jet. It was a clear night sky due to the cold air and she could count the stars passing them by. Daphne felt the sudden need to call her dad. By the time they landed he would probably be sleeping, or working on his research. Either way she would disturb him.
@Hitman
@psych0pomp
The co-gm and me reached a decision and we'd love to have you join the team!
You can post your sheets in the CS tab. We are finishing up interactions on the trip back to HQ. That will end episode two. There will be a timeskip of one week between episode two and three to ease your character's intro into the story. I'll make a OOC post detailing some important notes about that timeskip, after which episode three will immediately kick off.

In the meantime I can invite you to the discord if you send me your handle through pm.
You can chat up the other players to establish rapport between your characters, some key interactions that may have happened during that week etc. If you have any questions feel free to contact the co-gm and me at any time.
Looking forward to having you two be part of the YJ initiative!
Thanks xxx

After a couple of minutes Daphne lifted her head back up. She stared straight ahead, seeing Viktor piloting the jet. She could only see the back of his head, his spiky charcoal hair sticking up every which way after being stuck under his helm for most of the mission. He'd carried all the way from the vantage point back to the jet, no questions asked and even more important to Daphne, no harsh comments. Something told her he was holding it in, but then why not just say it to her? Viktor never beat around the bush. Whatever made him decide to keep the peace she was grateful for it. She couldn't stomach being yelled at right now.

Maybe...
No, that was probably not what was going on at all. Daphne thought back on their moment of closeness, feeling a multitude of feelings. In that harsh weather he gave her a sense of safety she really needed. Maybe he didn't dislike her as much as she thought, at least not enough to let her freeze to death. Daphne got pulled from her thoughts by Talon's phone flashing in front of her wooden face. She hadn't even noticed his approach. Her tired eyes scanned the screen, reading the message. Daphne moved her hand underneath the blanket and began to massage her chest. Sadly it wasn't working, she needed an external heat source. Her cells had cooled down too much.

Kassy also approached her quietly. She listened to the Atlantean. They hadn't talked all that much prior to the mission. She appreciated her quiet kindness. It was nice to know her momentary weakness was accepted by someone in the team. Daphne leaned into Kassy's gentle hug, feeling a lot less miserable already. She nodded at Kassy when she left, smiling inside.

She watched Talon walk up to Viktor and her slowly beating heart managed to still skip a beat, fueling nerves to run through her numb body. They were going to discuss the mission and deduce much of their failure was her fault. Daphne averted her eyes, not wanting to face the inevitable. The blankets weren't of much use anymore, the little heat she'd trapped with them was already gone. Daphne unwrapped them and went to think of a different solution.

Her brain was completely scrambled. There weren’t any ideas popping up. Instead Daphne returned her attention to Kassy and also Ja, who was hanging from the ceiling right above her. If she could smile she would have. She managed a meek wave, trying to emulate Ja’s ever present cheerfulness.
We are closing applications at the end of this week on Sunday. If you still want to try for a spot and need more time pm us and we can work something out. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with! ^.^
