Before you sits a man, a mask of Comedy and Tragedy adorns and concealing the face as bright purple eyes shine from beneath the shadow cast. Before him lays a paper, a contract. No words are spoken. Not yet.

A white-gloved hand slides the contract to you, a small feather decends down to settle on the yellowed page.

"Now is the time to make a choice. Read carefully. Once chosen, there is no going back."

The contract is simple.

My life is my own, my actions mine to be accounted.

I understand that conciousness is a gift, mirrored in others and beyond.

Afterimages

Reality has two sides to it, the normal 'real' world, and the Alter world. Just like everyone has dark sides, the worlds are the same, yet fundamentally different. The Alter World houses mirror images of people and structures of the real world, but as negative emotion and fear incarnated into monstrous creatures... This place has always existed, hidden behind the veil of ignorance in which humanity places itself. 4 young people are drawn into this world, bound by a mysterious contract signed in a dream that felt too real. Led by their other selves, their Afterimages, the lines between what is hidden and what is true reality are blurred, in a mission to save reality from itself.

Plot:

Neo Tokyo is a sprawling Japanese city and a hotspot of negative thoughts and emotions. Suicide rates have been on the rise recently for unknown reasons with almost no pattern or apparent reason why. Close friends of the most recent victims had said that they had gone crazy, babbling about an alternate reality and a figure called The Masked Man or some similar moniker. All the victims were alumni or current students of シルバーシェード (Shirubashedo) Academy, a community college near the Shinjuku District.

Afterimages

Afterimages are pure manifestations of negative emotions that reside in the Alter World, similar to the Mirror Creatures, and seemingly represent an animal that a person accepts as another version of themselves. After a person acknowledges and accepts their manifested dark side, the two beings merge into one, similar to a symbiotic relationship. The Afterimage then modifies its host to be halfway between the animal the Afterimage represents and the host's original human body. The more the host discovers about themselves, the more powerful their Afterimage becomes.

Afterimages are classified by "types" consisting of an element and an inclination.
Elements are Heat, Cold, Light, and Dark. Inclinations are War, Peace, Order, and Chaos.

Afterimage Type Components

The elements and inclinations are generally determined by the host's personality, the Afterimage mirroring its host's true self.
Heat usually consists of an inextinguishable passion or rage, even a hot temper could manifest this way.
Cold represents a sizable pride or reserved nature, perhaps even a tendency to avoid others could result in a Cold Afterimage.
Light represents an unnaturally cheerful disposition, a mask that was donned so many times that it became the host's true face.
Dark consists of the true meaning of a dark side, almost a complete flip-side of the host's main personality.

War is bent on harm, a figment of violence.
Peace is focused on protection and mending, a living shield.
Order is based on prediction, forcing adversaries to follow a set script.
Chaos is the wild card, its actions are unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Mirror Creatures

The mirror creatures are pure manifestations of negative and repressed emotions, emanated and reflected from the 'real' world. traditional weapons tend to have little to no effect on them and can only be destroyed by attacks infused with Afterimage power, known in the Alter World as "soule" energy. While they are beings created of human emotion and fear, they are not tied to a human, simply a reflection abandoned to wander the Alter World with no hope of ever encountering its originator.

This includes themes of suicide, self-harm, brutal deaths, and a grimdark alternate reality.

Joker snapped out of his thoughts as the boar charged, quickly dispatched by Youmu.

Was this the creature they were hunting? Didnt seem at all that dangerous, judging by how quickly it was taken down, but that could have also just been a sizable gap in strength.

But it was a boar. There were bound to be more around.

"Arsene, come."

The spectral figure appeared behind him as his mask burned away, he drew his knife as he looked around him.

Joker looked around the room as everyone gathered, splitting among groups to leave and those to stay... as the options to weigh in his mind, but he would be of more use with the hunting group than he could be of help here. If Anne and Rayne were going to stay and be a lookout, everything should be fine...

"I'll go with you guys on the hunting trip. Better than sitting around here."

He stood, dusting himself off as he did so. This excursion, should the hunters info be reliable, could be a good test to see if his abilities worked the same as he was used to, as well as to see what kind of fauna could be found here...

Forested Outskirts, Aventon

Fallen leaves, stray bark, splintered branches. All such things crunched under his boots as he took up the rear of the group, his eyes glancing to the trees, irregular in pattern and for that it was both Chaotic and beautiful. The shades of green seemed to blend with each other, melding with the bark of the trees... The forest wasnt something he was able to see in Tokyo, the closest thing that he had were the parks he went to in his free time... However, he wasnt here to take in the sights, but to hunt down whatever creature, or creatures as evidence implied, was here...

His gaze turned to the rest of the group, talk of youkai and whatever 'rahi' were, speculation of what type of creature this could be... His mind went to the Shadows of the Metaverse, but he shook away the thought. Those creature were representations of the subconscious, though their forms could be grounded in mythological texts... youkai being one such representation.

"Perhaps it's not what any of us think, but a creature native to this world that might not be from this particular area. Hunter, Derek, this monster you saw... could you describe it? Eye-witness accounts aren't the most reliable, but it might put a face to a name, or a creature to evidence in this case."

Kate has a rather strange power, from a tattoo-ish marking on her back that she had since birth that depicts a howling wolf, her body produces a viscous black substance with properties similar to ink that flows in accordance with her heart rate and stress level, flowing and ultimateley enveloping her body with a vague shape of a bipedal wolf completely forged from the black liquid. When her 'ink form' is activated (usually triggered by high amounts of stress), her body acts as the core for the vague bipedal creature’s body and Kate herself looses control of what she does. She also is rendered unconcious each time the power is de-activated.

The ink body is about 12 inches around Kate's actual body, and the body still acts as a liquid and act as a conduit for electricity. The creature that is created as a result of her power acts with an animalistic instinct mixed with a personification of her anxiety in its mannerisms, seemingly perpetually anxious though not agressive initially unless something triggers it (through it's Anxiety, or in response to agression). The creature's main attack pattern tend to be along the lines of attempting to grapple and drown/incapacitate its quarry. However, if the creature takes a liking to a particular individual, it will act exceedingly 'clingy' and will not willingly leave that person's side.

Kate has no control over her power, if not at little at most, but outside sources have a variety of options in terms of rendering the creature immobile, unconcious, or dispelling the affect of her ability. High concentrations of light and/or heat causes the ink to slowly evaporate, eventually forcing Kate out of the Ink-Wolf state, this can also be acheived by dousing it with water. Electricity can also nullify the ink and render Kate unconcious.

Kate's usual appearance, before being brought to Sirocco, consisted of various combinations of solid-color shirts, light sweaters or hoodies, and either jeans or sweatpants depending on the day. Her skin is a light tan color, a small splattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose. Her hair is a deep mahogany brown, her waves cut just below her jaw. Kate's eyes are an olive green.

Empathetic-Timid-Quiet-Protective-Kind

Kate tends to have a more soft and cuddly attitude dispite her situation, often driven by the prospect that if she builds enough friendships then she might find someone that could help keep herself under control. However, she is scared of nearly everyone else in the prison, they all got into Sirocco for worse things than she did right?

Kate displays very empathetic behavior when interacting with others, sometimes even a little protective of those she had gotten to know. Dispite her usually quiet demeanor, she has no problem expressing herself to people around her once she has broken away from her perpetual anxiety and fear revolving around anything and everything within Sirocco's environment. She even gives small gifts to those she calls her friends and expresses a kindness that would genuinely be unheard of within a prison.

Kate has always had it rough, ever since she was a kid. Growing up in a family of Mutes in the town of Portsmouth, and a rich one at that, her power and her lack of control causing her to be a stain on the family name. She wasn't able to be given a simple deadline to do assignments for the family company, Cadbury Brewing Company, without triggering her power from the stress, and thus removing her from the roster of a possible heir to the company leaving that responsibility to her sister Genevieve.

Kate was left on her own to her own devices when she was 19, by her own volition, attempting not to be a burden to her family, attempting to land a job but ultimately failing, her troublesome power was a ceaseless chaos that followed her wherever she went, a literal personification of her anxiety that turned her into a monster... That chaos had also caught the attention of the elusive Portsmouth Mafia, the Dioganni Family.

The Dioganni Family approached Kate with the promise of financial stability, something she was severely lacking from being estranged with her family, though on accepting their offer, the job that she was signed up for wasn't for her... but for her power
Enforced Assurance. That's what they called her job, her 'coworkers' staging stressful situations to trigger her power and use her as the brawn for a few of their more dangerous operations. Staying for the stability and a sliver of hope that they might help her learn how to control her ability. She stayed with them for 8 years, fueled by that empty hope, earning the name Ink-Wolf after several successful operations and turf wars, Kate was the Mafia's trump card, though every ace is disposable. She began to become more and more reluctant to go on ops as she started to become more aware of what happened while her ability was active... aware of the killing she was doing... she didn't want to be a monster, not anymore.

Her final mission was staged, what should have been a normal armed robbery was shut down, plans leaked to local police, and a fire alarm tripped, she was left behind, ability disabled and arrested. The organization that had helped her for years now turned their backs on her, no one came to bail her out. And to be honest? She was fine with that.

Her trial went as would expect, sentenced to life to Sirocco for Serial Manslaughter and classed as a danger to regular society due to her inability to control her power.

Thus leads us to today, when she woke on the bus headed to the middle of nowhere with a neckband that disengaged her ability when she got agressive, and an ache in her chest, remnants of a surgery she didn't remember, an internal pulse monitor broadcasting it's readings to who-knows-where and a GPS tracker...
