I think you fail to realize how big this actually is. Eventually, you'll be dragged in whether you want it or not. If you want to think about it negatively, you either die alongside your friends trying your best to save existence, or you buy some time, only to be eventually slaughtered as you say, regardless. Or, if you want to think about it positively, you'll save existence alongside your friends as you have before, allowing yourself an opportunity of peace once again.

I'm suggesting that everything I've done to this point is leverage history and follow the steps other people have laid out before me. I don't know how much I can do in this case, and I'm not going to die just so I can say I was there.
