Another kunai joined the two as Vator came up to them, the three knives flying rhythmically as she continued juggling.. Pretty big on the flaming wheels huh? Maybe one day she'd have a size changing staff and be able to summon ten thousand soldiers with a single strand of hair.

What ambled up piqued her interest however, with their sleek bodies, and terrifying heads. It was a sort of admiration and excitement that only came with seeing fantastical beasts such as these. A type of oni, wasn't it? She saw them in an encyclopedia once, but it didn't have that much information on them other than their appearances and some religious backgrounds.

With a side spin, she threw all three knives in quick succession, aiming for the eyes of the ushi-oni, moving to the sides as she did so. Trying to all bumrush the front surely wasn't a good option. Plus, the cart was in the way, and she had a feeling having it destroyed wouldn't please Joji too much.

"Where did these things even come from!?"

"Ah, I wish I had unbreakable weapons." Ari sighed. "Well, if you had to block with something that's isn't a nuclei, just be sure you're prepared to lose it."

She took one of the kunais out of its sheath nonchalantly, throwing it up in the air and catching it as it fell. A monotonous task to occupy her hands as she walked.

"Judging from all that stuff you have, you've made quite a fortune for yourself huh? Must be pretty nice. All custom made?"

Another kunai left its sheath, as she started to juggle two of them.

For just an instant they met eyes, before Calace simply disappeared and logged off. Almost immediately Ari lost all her energy, her tail and ears visibly drooping.

Did Lugh tell everyone about that incident? Maybe everyone really hated her now. Enough to just log off and avoid her all together.

"Ah... I see..."

It was all she could say in the wake of Calace's sudden absence. The rest of the journey went in silence, even as she kept her eyes out.

Peaceful, an almost leisurely stroll through the country side. Perhaps too peaceful, as it left her to her thoughts, roiling within with doubt, fear and shame. Perhaps she really should just quit. Maybe they weren't really angry at her, or that she was just overthinking it. They've been friends for quite a while after all. But what if that was just them tolerating her, and they never really were close to her in the first place?

“So, Ari, ranger was what you were, yeah? Where’s the bow?”

Bortz's cut through her turbulent thoughts like a ship's prow breaking the waves.

"Ah, that... . I kinda... kinda broke some of my equipment in a fight. They were too strong for me and I had to escape." Ari flashed a smile at him. "Don't worry. I'm not going to run at the first sign of trouble."
[Ranger]Ari Reina Caladis(Theresa)

Well, they certainly seemed much better equipped than she was. At least they could deal with things larger than she can. When the merchant rang the bell and addressed everyone, the party quickly introduced themselves one by one. Her suspicions and fear were confirmed; she seemed to be the only person with the least amount of knowledge and experience. At least if she survives this, she'll be strong enough for covering any potential war. Hopefully.

Wait, was she a reporter now? Perhaps she could say she's covered wars when interviewed in real life.

"Hi hi! I am Ari Reina Caladis, but you can just call me Ari! I'm still kinda new but I'm supposed to be a ranger I think?" Ari waved to the rest of her teammates. "Hi Calace! Didn't see you around for quite a bit. Guess things finally cleared up huh. How's things?"
[Ranger]Ari Reina Caladis(Theresa)

Her ears and tail shocked straight, she stood at attention immediately. An interview? Was she here for an interview? Her palms were sweaty already, but her mouth was already speaking through her confusion.

“Yes! I am Ari Reina Caladis! I’m a Ranger right now, but I actually want to be a Ninja as soon as I qualify for that! My favourite food is salted fish!”

“Ninja, hm, good!” The man barked. “We like AGI-builds here at CCC! Now, the underground palace! Tell me everything about the enemies there!”

“There are no enemies!” Ari continued. “Just stone guards in different varieties wielding strong bronze weapons! But there are massive monsters inside the walls from what I saw!”

“Specifics, Ari! What weapons?! What numbers?! And the monsters in the walls, what type?!”

Ari jerked a little from the question. “Swords! Polearms! And a lot! I don’t have exact numbers! I don’t know what the monsters were, they were huge, bigger than what I can see into the walls!”

“BUT WERE THEY ACTIVE?!”

“They weren’t moving, or doing anything! They’re just in the walls!” She was so tensed up from nervousness, her tail was straight enough to play a chord on by now.

The man’s gaze bore into Ari with the intensity of a volcano on the cusp of eruption, veins bulging out of his red face. Abruptly, he slammed the table with an open hand and marched right up to her.

“Excellent work, newcomer,” he said with a firm nod. “Zhi-Toren’s assessment was on-point after all. Ari, you’re the one who’ve discovered this palace. As such, you’ve the right to decide: shall we release knowledge of this now? Or shall we investigate further before acting?”

The sense of relief was overwhelming, she felt like she was about to collapse on her legs from the sheer drop of the tension she felt before. Ari considered her options carefully as he posed them to her. It didn’t seem right just… releasing the public on such a place when she had no idea what sort of place it was supposed to be. True, the guards at the palace did say it was a tomb, but then what was those huge monsters in the wall? Just plain monster energy? It shone so brightly that unscrupulous players like the first one she talked to would probably somehow release it and destroy the world or something as cataclysmic.

“A-ah… There should probably be a more thorough investigation. I have not been there for very long after all. Not long enough to piece together what happened or any other purpose the place could have.”

“Hoo,” he exhaled, stroking his chin. “And are you volunteering for that?”

“Pu...p… Please let me get stronger first.” Ari choked out at that. “They were far beyond my skill, and going back there as I am would result in another death.”

The man raised his brows, a curious glint in his eyes. “Then it’s good that there’s plenty of other work to worry about.” He stepped away from Ari, returning to the table. “You’ve heard of the war declaration?”

“Nope!” She replied with no hesitation. Those were things far beyond what she’s going to worry about after all. Ari had no horses in that race. Perhaps if she was already putting her money on one, she’d worry more. “What’s going on with the war?”

He motioned for her to come towards the table. “Here and here,” he pointed out, “are the clans that are preparing for war. The Tato-Ie wish for the land and resources of the Mora-Sho, who in turn wish to remain independent rather than as a vassal state. In one week of in-game time, the Tato-Ie will advance with their main army, while hiring Immortals and Rien adventurers to guard their city-state from possible invasions from the Ryoku-Jo. Heard of the Flamebringer Princess? She’s part of that clan.”

Sweeping his hand over the geography of the continent of Horogi, from the city-states to the vassal-villages to the network of railways and rivers that connected them, he faced Ari once again.

“Knowing this, what comes to mind?”

Ari looked over the map, her thoughts scrambling over one another. The closest thing she got to this sort of situation would be through her history classes, and all those books she read. An army marches on its stomach, but she wasn’t sure how much of that would be true in a game world. Surely they’d still need supplies still?

Her ears perked when she heard the Princess’ name however. The cool poster of a triumphant champion was hard to forget.

“Ah.. the Princess huh... I wonder what she’s like…” She pondered for a moment before returning to the question. “I’m not really an expert or anything, but all I get is that the railways will be a hotbed for conflict. Without knowing each clan personally, I have no way to really know what they are going to do or how they are going to react, but I imagine something like this is going to set off more than just a Tato-le Mora-Sho war.”

“It's just guesswork based on that, but I imagine these sets of villages and cities here-,” She pointed to a few spots the railways run through. “Will be very contested.I imagine Mora-sho would likely try to sabotage the rails if they get pushed back too far.”

“Good, good!” the man boomed, crossing his arms and sounding very much like an enthusiastic professor trying to draw out more thought from a new student. “Now, if the destruction of the rails connecting to these outlying villages go through, what comes to mind, Ari?”

He pulled out a couple of cow-shaped paperweights from his sleeves, depositing them on top of the rails. A few villages now looked especially isolated, especially the ones west of the Mora-Sho city-state, close to the nebulous territory of the nomadic bandits of the Gakui-Re.

“A new player moves in to grab land and spark more conflict?”

"And when wannabe warlords pop up, who's there first?!"

“W-..us?” Her tail tensed up immediately at his tone.

“Exactly!” He snapped his fingers. “And you’ll be the one to cover it!”

It… wasn’t exactly ideal but at least Ari could explore there. Perhaps one of her friends wants to come along too. Could be fun, or it could be a disaster again. Her tail swished around weakly as she raised a hand.

“Y… yaaay…”
@KazemitsuIt happens.

Thanks for sticking till the end though. ;w;7

Well, the building certainly looked as imposing as it was out of place, but that certainly was no reason to loiter around. There was a proverb in her country that states those who do not ask, will remain lost after all.

Going up to the front door as confidently as you please, she opened it and stepped inside.

"Excuse me! Is this the building for CCC? I was told to go here?"

Though Ari had become familiar with the market, there was a decidedly different atmosphere amongst the stalls that ringed the area. There were definitely fewer street vendors around now, and fewer Immortals present to buy up wares too. Chances were good still that she could get what she needed, and it was definitely less claustrophobic now that she could walk through the aisles of stalls without having to rub shoulders with others, but it was still strange. The news of war, and the profits that it promised those intrepid entrepreneurs certainly had a strong effect, enough that even the merchants of Nyu-Taro would chase it, when they had a bevy of newly-born Immortals to scam instead.

She wasn’t looking for market stuff however, but a reputable trader. Just like the night markets at home, a nice machete bought from there might be cheaper, but may not be as strong or as durable as one bought from a proper standing shop. Someone who can make, maintain and upgrade a wrist launcher would be good. Of course, she can always turn back to the bazaar if such a person was not available. Perhaps she’d find the merchant she owes money to while searching too. Might as well get that done with as well.

There were a couple storefronts that looked promising from Ari’s perspective. Though she didn’t linger too long at the forges of the ogre and the orc, both who seemed to specialize more in melee weaponry, there were plenty of other establishments that catered to her own desire for ranged weaponry. One in particular, stood out to her: Canopy Creations. Run by a palm-sized fairy and featuring some fascinating architecture that fused trees with walls and pillars, this particular area had quite a few artisan pieces. More than a few other Immortals were browsing the selection, one that contained everything from staves to bows, and after some searching about, Ari found a few wristmounted bows that caught her attention as well. Of course, with 200,000 rishi in her pockets, she could certainly afford to buy all of them, but if she didn’t want to?

Well, considering the ‘no returns’ policy of the shop, she’ll have to make a decision...though a custom-order may also be in the range of possibility, considering her current wealth.

These were certainly good choices to look at, but she wanted something she could keep on using. A custom made one sounds better for the long run if she wanted to keep on upgrading it.

“Excuse me,” she approached the fairy, glancing at her other choices. “But is there one that could be custom made for my use?”
The fairy, freckle-faced and dressed in a complex combination of different-colored cloths, tossed her blonde hair back at Ari’s approach. “Oh my,” she said, voice husky. “That I could certainly do, darling, but it’d take some time as well, depending on what exactly you’re in the market for. So I must ask, what are you looking for?”

“A wrist mounted crossbow that won’t interfere with my movement, and shoots anything that I might put in it.” She scrunched up her face for a moment, ears flattening slightly as she tried to elaborate. “Uh, like, rocks, a grapple hook, knife or something. Also I need it to launch them good.”

“That’s a variety for sure, hun. Are throwing those not an option?”

“Yes.” Ari looked at the fairy blankly, unable to see her point. “But I want one that can do that reliably and quickly.”

The fairy lady pulled out a small notepad out between her cleavage, and started scribbling down some notes with the edge of her pinky. “Hm...I can certainly design a launcher, but then I must ask, darling. How attached are you to the idea that this is a crossbow?”

“As long as it shoots anything I put in it, and doesn’t lose its ammo when I move around, it should be fine.” Ari leaned in closer, attempting to peer into the notebook. “How much will this cost me?”

“You prefer to store ammo, rather than generate it?” The fairy lady pressed a finger against Ari’s nose, pushing her head back. “And no peeking until I’m finished, ok?”

Her ears drooped slightly as Ari retreated, feeling a little chastised. “Store? No, generating it is fine. I just want it to be able to shoot things I put in it as well. Hard to aim if things fall out of it if I move too fast.

The fairy lady smiled, finishing off her designs with a flourish, then turned it over for Ari to see. Small as the leaf was, the catgirl would definitely have to lean in close to discern the details. There were three sketches present, and as Ari’s eyes went over them, the fairy began to explain. “First one is the wrist-mounted catapult concept, basing off the idea of a throwing arm without the act of actually throwing. With this knob here, you can adjust the angle of release, and if you’re exceptionally careful with those hands of yours, this can be used to throw spears as well. The second one, of course, is a more basic slingshot model, with a larger cup accounting for whatever you’d like to jam in there. There’s a hole there as well, for slotting in arrows, darts, and what have you, but to make sure that it doesn’t slide through, you’ll need a big head, dear. Now, the third one is where things becomes...intriguing.”
She flew in closer, her butterfly wings scattering a sweet-smelling dust around Ari.

“I’ve recently come from a vacation from Alderamin, and they’ve been developing some fairly interesting new contraptions. A steam-powered arbalest, you see. Compressed air is released on one end, shooting out everything inside the barrel out the other end. I can imagine myself crafting a variation of it that could be fitted onto your wrist, with an adjustable barrel to enable a variety of objects to be thrust out of it, but, in terms of price, it’s certainly more expensive.”

Ari gulped. “How much are we talking about here?”

“Depends on your budget, darling. I could whip up something that’s useful for 70,000 rishi, but if you’re already going out of your way to grab yourself a custom order? Well, you wouldn’t really be getting your money’s worth without spending at least 150,000 rishi.”

Ari’s expression remained neutral but her shock was readily apparent as both her tail and ears straightened and puffed out.
“Will I be able to upgrade it here at a later date when I need to?”

“To bring the quality of a weapon up to a new level would often require a total overhaul of the previous materials used,” she replied, before smiling at Ari. “But if you didn’t, this’ll just become a sunk cost over time, wouldn’t it?”

“T-Then, lets see what you can do with 150,000 rishi.” Her voice was wavering slightly as she confirmed what she wanted. Guess everything else she can wait for. Now to go straight to the merchant to pay off her debts before she gets sidelined by another shiny thing.

“Lovely,” the fairy replied, sliding the leaf-notepad back into her cleavage. “If you could be a dear and pay a deposit of 75,000 rishi, I can start work immediately and be done in two days.”

Counting out the money, Ari held out the amount to the fairy. “Here you go. I’ll come by in two days.”

Exiting the shop, she had a niggling feeling she had done something she shouldn’t. Perhaps it was just her conscience warning her she might overspend and not have any to repay her debts? In any case, she will have to skip the rest of the items for now and see about repaying the merchant first.

“Thank you for your patronage~” The fairy blew a kiss in Ari’s direction as the catgirl left the curious shop, before moving on to attend to her other customers.

As for the seller of ninja tools, however, Ari found herself unable to locate the stall. Perhaps he wasn’t logged in? Or maybe he had already left Nyu-Taro, like so many other street stall owners. She looked over the open markets a couple more times, but could only conclude that the man wasn’t there. Whether that was for better or worse, however, she had no way of knowing.
It was both relieving and worrying somehow that she did not find the man. Relieving, because she could put off the apology, and worrying because she did not like to be in debt to someone.

The only other thing she needed now was a longer rope that wasn’t lumpy like her handmade grass rope was. That one wasn’t too hard to find at least. A general supply shop was easy enough to find after all. 8000 rishi for a 30m long hemp rope was sufficient. As for the lantern and hook? Those were in the same shop, being a relatively common tool. Both costs about 6,500 rishi.

With those finally in her inventory, she stepped out of the shop and sighed. Now to report to the place Zhi mentioned. Hopefully they didn’t engage in any weird hazing rituals.
[Ranger]Ari Reina Caladis(Theresa)

Ari gracefully accepted the money and card, taking a moment to glance at the detail on the card.

"Thanks! I'll be sure to do that."

Feeling a bit more reassured, she renewed her efforts on the pancake with vigor. It was pretty odd eating in a game. Did this mean she can eat anything she wants here and never get fat?

***

Finished with the food and finally out of that posh looking place, Ari seemed more relaxed than before.

"Right, first would be... The merchant. I need to repay him, and apologize."
Next... was supplies. Drown her once, shame on her. Drown her twice, and there obviously was something wrong with her method. A length of rope, any sort of lantern that wasn't affected by water, and a wrist bow for her class skills. Maybe a grapple hook to attach to the rope too, and some poison to help soften up targets.

Feeling a bit fired up, Ari set off at an excited jog, looking for the market.
[Ranger]Ari Reina Caladis(Theresa)

She perked up at the compliment, but almost immediately remembered where she was. Remembering her rather... rustic, appearance she glanced over to her host to see if she's eating before doing so herself. Just looking at the contrast of her own dusty hand holding the fancy glass the boba came in with was enough to make her nervous.

The compliments she received didn't help either. It made her giddy with excitement, but also filled her with some guilt.

"Hmm... exploring huh? That sounds great. But I have a debt to pay off first." Ari stuffed a large piece of the pancake into her mouth. "I'll join you after, if that's ok."

There was no telling what they'd ask her to do after all; she might be sent far away judging from the clothing on Zhi. Just up and disappearing on the merchant after she missed that meeting with him was... not a behaviour she wanted herself to be associated with.

Zhi-Toren nodded. A sense of responsibility was another quality that she liked to see in prospective agents, after all. Sipping at her own beverage, the woman said, "That's fine then. I'm not certain if it'll cover your debts, but new agents get a signing bonus of 200,000 rishi anyhow. Just a little bit of change to help fund their travel expenses to begin with, you see. Just need you to place your index finger here..."

From her pockets, she drew out a scroll of creamy papyrus and unfurled it. Various complicated words were used, but the sum of the contents was essentially for Ari to join the 'Cacophony Concord Connect' guild. At the bottom, in lieu of a line for signatures, was a box that Zhi-Toren gestured the catgirl to touch.

Ari looked blankly at the paper for a moment. Was there any reason to hesitate? She could pay off the man immediately, then apologize. With the rest of the money... well... She would have to think better on what to use it on; having another weapon break on her wasn't something she wanted to happen again.

"I see. W-Well I guess I can join immediately then." She tried not to seem too excited, but her tail twitching erratically betrayed her. Seeing as the woman was already holding out the piece of paper out to her, she pressed a finger on the spot indicated.

"So uh... What's to be expected of me?"
