Also, how much have the remaining powers began trying to reclaim the territory around their cities or elsewhere? I'd imagine there's at least some area that's protected since feeding several million people is kind of hard without some sort of agriculture.

Indeed. And THANK YOU for raising this point, I saw an answer to this years ago and was just reminded of it :D
There would have been aggressive campaigns earlier on to reclaim as much territory around each safe bastion to re-start agricultural efforts, but a considerable lack of space would demand for new solutions, such as the idea of vertical farming:

And no. I have NO IDEA how that last image works as far as staying up-right goes.
The question for the merc idea is whether we are all random mercs being hired for something. A per-existing group and then of course the amount of experience each member has.

Humm, tricky.
There's always going to be issues and errors in communication with a bunch of strangers RP'ing that they've known each other for ages, right?
Would need to think of a way around that.

COULD say that the group that contracts mercs hires from everywhere and assigns groups or individuals together towards certain tasks and missions, meaning that a captain could be assigned a completely random looking crew of strangers for certain tasks, but assigned similar or the same crew later based on mission success and group performance.
They'd hire for everything from scavenging to surveilance to muscle.
"Day 446. They still do not know I am dog."
PLANNING HAS BEGUN!
"[screaming internally]"
So thinking, would we start as regular people, perhaps wanderers or maybe even mercenaries?

This I kinda like.
Actually, kinda digging it the more I think about it.

Living as mercenaries would be easy money, because in a world of monsters, apocalyptic wastelands and evil mutants, who wouldn't want a professional band of techies, engineers and gun-wielding rule-breakers?

After all, this is ALSO a world where entire cities were consumed by un-natural forces very swiftly... there's probably a lot of now unguarded bank vaults all over the place, there's supplies and tech practically laying around, waiting to be picked up by whomever claims it first... Not to mention a whole mess of 'lost cities' and powerful mystical artifacts that have been unearthed by the cataclysm in various places. ever hear of Shambala?
The trick being that it's all based in rather hostile places, full of the mutant monsters, roving bandits, mad cults from before the end of days, the mysterious Fae, so walking would be out of the question....

How does everyone feel about this?

Florid Isnt an available state in afraid

Why not?
Interested!

But a question: How do you foresee the Fae working? What are their goals, why do they kidnap humans, and how are they different from 'Cold-iron bad, can tell no lies' fae?

Entirely non-physical entities that infest bodies in multiple numbers, growing extra faces out of places on said body that shouldn't have faces, among the more common of mutations they seem to impose. They're not big on communication, they're very fast, cold iron works as well as any other metal on them (for values of 'well' see 'fire everything') and seem to have an effect on plant-life around them (it grows bigger and faster than it should) and therefore are the obvious suspect into how most of the world cities are choked in trees and vines.
As far as their motives go, i'd like to keep them mysterious and creepily nefarious, Something that you'd be happier to not encounter, and something to make for a terrifying chase scene if you did.

I'd play a vampire, but I don't want to have to write a description of how my appearance changes in every post. That's dull. I prefer not to look human, but to be decent looking enough to enjoy it and not bother talking about it. Can I just have that? It's all about the skull-bashing battles anyway.

Ohh no no, nothing like that. As in it would require a vampire to slaughter and devour people by the hundreds to look like someone from 'underworld' or 'twilight'. This includes stuff like superior strength and speed.
Otherwise, you mostly just look like something with translucent white flesh with black veins bulging through every limb, intelligent, and various in appearance (skinny and wretches, muscular and brawny, or big fleshy wings.)

Being one means you look terrifying and you're OBVIOUSLY a vampire, being the other means you might look human-ish, but if it's found you're a vampire then absolutely everyone will know how you came to look like that.
Question. What roles will the players be taking in this rp?

Well, that's one of the topics that I think needs some discussion and fresh ideas.
I started writing a few organizations into the story, one a government organization focused on information and trouble-shooting, called Paladin... sort of a post modernday Illuminati.

Sound good? I could use suggestions and Ideas.
You have my attention

But I can't add my thoughts right now, at work on my phone.

Any time is good.

Interested, I do have a few ideas about the races.

And I really only have one question: Right or Left Twix??

Left :D
