“I could ask you the same thing, Ms. Tachibana.” He remarked as he looked her over. “You? The military?”

Hotaru had to stop herself from looking too annoyed, but really, what was he expecting? They were probably surrounded by people like her that had no better choice, was that really so surprising? And of all the people to ask why she was here, Charles was the absolute last person to ask! He was literally the song of a lord! If there was anyone here who was questionable, it was him, not her!

"One of us has a future that doesn't involve a life of servitude. I can't say I agree with your statement," She couldn't help but remind him of his upbringing, trying to make a point. "Why would you willingly put yourself through this?"

“It’s a proud tradition in my family. I am glad to see you, but I never imagined you in uniform. You'll look great.”

Was he trying to soften her up? Her jaw dropped slightly, only snapping shut after a few seconds. He didn't mean that. He was just trying to pivot the conversation! There was a hint of embarrassment on her face as she shook her head, taking in a breath before speaking through her flustered thoughts. You've seen this play before, don't go falling for it, She had to remind herself, although this was the first time it was aimed at her so to speak. Her voice trailed off before she cleared her throat. "That is... I wish I could say the same, but your presence here concerns me. Is the Lord aware of your participation? I can't possibly imagine him or the Lady being alright with this."

Charles' reaction gave her an answer before he could: a resounding no by the looks of it. What she hadn't expected, however, was suddenly getting dragged away. He was stronger than he looked, and she couldn't help but quietly curse at that. He already had a leg up on her! She couldn't help but look around, a little embarrassed. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to get the wrong idea. It didn't matter where you were in life, rumors could ruin your reputation anywhere.

“My mother was not fond of my decision, yes.” His tone was terse, slightly less friendly than it was previously. “My decision was to follow in the shadow of my grandfather. There has been members of my family in the military police and the garrison for generations. I know the risks. Do you? Are you that desperate? I promised you that I would support you and your family back in Orvud. Did you not believe me?”

At his words Hotaru couldn't help but roll her eyes, though the attempt to get out of his grasp was noticeable. "I know perfectly well what I'm doing," She snapped, clearly annoyed at his behavior. "And your offer was generous, but I need to stand on my own two feet. It's my life, Young—Charles, and I have nothing left to lose." That was going to take some getting used to.

“Outside of your life.” Charles released his grip on her wrist, sighing as he did so. “I guess this just means I’ll have to keep protecting you, Miss Tachibana.” He said as he turned to look at her now that he was further away, his eyes continuing to scan the grounds.

Ha, so he was playing at being incognito. Except anyone worth their salt would recognize his name instantly. And he had the nerve to lecture her! Crossing her arms, Hotaru let out a huff. "Judging from today, I will be the one having to keep you out of trouble. I understand someone in your position isn't used to it, but you aren't supposed to backtalk your superiors. You can't just go around saying and doing whatever you want, there are consequences to your words. Look at those cadets running because of you! Do you really think you can 'protect' anyone like that?" She didn't want to come off as harsh, but she was sincerely worried that he wasn't ready for this sort of thing.

“Of course. It is the responsibility of the strong and the privileged to protect the weak. Now if you excuse me, before I cause another scene, I do need to find the cabins. We will converse later. Good luck.”

Charles wouldn't depart with solely those words, his hand patting her head as he left her. Once again, her jaw dropped, albeit this time she wasn't sure if it was because she was insulted or because she was shocked. Probably both. Definitely both--as far as she was aware, there was no longer any titles separating them: right now, they were on even ground. So he may have meant well, but his declaration came off as incredibly condescending! Unless it was sincere, but even that worried her to no end. He was kind and helpful, but that wouldn't translate well here in training, let alone if anything serious ever happened.

By the time Hotaru turned around, Charles was well on his way, leaving the woman stunned as she absentmindedly placed her hand on her head. After a few seconds she lowered her hand, shoulders tensing as she let out another huff and decided to go to the cabins as well. Fine, if he wanted to play the hero, so be it, but she would make absolutely sure she wouldn't fall behind. If he thought she was just going to take that statement sitting down, then he had another thing coming.

It looked like luck was on her side; Drill Sergeant Nasty didn't feel like picking on anyone else. Or maybe he did and she just hadn't caught it. Her focus was everywhere--no, that wasn't entirely true, she actually had the opposite problem. Hotaru was so focused on one person that nearly everyone else around her was just a blur. If she was honest, it worried her. She could usually keep her cool, but the entire situation was throwing her for a loop. At the very least, now that they were dismissed, she could properly confront him without drawing too much attention.

There had been a tiny part of her that had hoped she had been mistaken, that maybe there had been an incredibly unlikely chance that someone with the exact same name and similar looks was in his place, but she wasn't so lucky. Or he was the unlucky one? It wasn't often that she found herself so flustered, uncertainty brewing in the pit of her stomach. It was easier to be surrounded by strangers, she supposed. Not that she was looking to be antisocial, quite the opposite, but seeing Charles here was making her head do all sorts of mental gymnastics.

Hotaru lingered, hands behind her back as she gave a polite smile to anyone who looked her way, although as soon as the other girl walked away, she practically jumped at the chance. She made a beeline for Charles, stopping right before him. She tapped his shoulder with two fingers, almost bowing before catching herself and instead giving him an incredulous look.

"Young Lord--" She didn't catch herself on time, only stopping to give a quick shake of her head before pinching the bridge of her nose. Hopefully no one heard that, she was super out of her element right now. "--what in the world are you doing here?" She lowered her voice in an accusatory tone. Whatever his response was, it had better be good.

Once the darkness returned, Eris stiffened, waiting for something to happen. But aside from the weird gibberish of the voice, everything was just dark all around him. Touching his face and clothes, Eris let out a loud groan as he realized the spell came back. He was blind again! What the hell was even the point of doing the extra stuff right if they weren't getting rewarded?! Well, that wasn't entirely true, he did remember the announcement saying it was extra credit for the mages or whatever. So there was a point, just not one that benefited him.

Dropping his arms to his sides, the vampire turned in the direction of Wells' voice, giving him an empty smile. "I can't see shit again," He informed him, not bothering to hide the bitterness in his voice. "Capturing my natural good looks is difficult for any artist. Unless we're in front of a mirror, no sculpture or anything of the sort could possibly hope to exude this." He flashed an actual grin, holding it for about three seconds until he dropped it. "I bet they got your pout just about right, though." He didn't need a mirror to know he probably nailed the kid's typical scowl, keeping it on as he crossed his arms.

"As for doing more...I don't know, I thought we solved it pretty easily. We actually made a good team," He admitted with a slight shrug. "The baseline grade is an eighty, each 'challenge' is an additional five percent..." He grimaced as he calculated it out. "So that means another three would need to be completed to earn one hundred--anything more than that is just torture and only nerds would go for the extra credit--and only one more challenge for you to pass with an A minus." He raised his eyebrows, thinking to himself. "So we have three options: we keep doing challenges to get your grade up, we do the one challenge in front of you to scrape by with an acceptable grade since it's right there, or we do nothing and get out. The last one is mighty tempting, I am not a fan of not seeing." He ran his hand through his hair, frowning.

More peeved off that he can't see again than caring about the stupid test or @Scribe of Thoth.

Aw, he spaced out? That was kinda cute. Although he seemed more tense than spacey, but at the same time, that wasn't really any of her business, was it? She wasn't about to be rude and question him on it, though. If there was one thing she learned from middle school, it was that people didn't generally like when you delved too soon into their lives. Instead, she nodded in understanding, hurriedly grabbing her own luggage before chasing after Yasuhide. Excellent, they were in the same class! One friend down, the rest to go!

Asuka stood next to Yasuhide happily, rocking back and forth on her heels as she took a quick look at the others that had gathered. One girl with a set of pigtails and red eyes greeted them after raising her hand, and Asuka couldn't help but wave back, trying to keep herself open and friendly. Maybe she should tone down the enthusiasm? Well, Yasuhide seemed to be alright with that level until he spaced out, so she'd have to play it by ear with each individual to see their reactions. After all, everyone was different.

And speaking of different, one purple haired girl decided to (rather loudly) exclaim and point at someone. Funny, Asuka didn't think elementary school children were allowed in Ishin. Utsuya Hajo, well now she knew who to watch to see what not to say to people. "How rude," Asuka commented, shaking her head as she looked to the tactless child with a small smile. "If we're going to be in the same class, we should aim to get along and not go around insulting one another." She cheerfully said, punctuating her statement with a small giggle.

"The only thing more unpredictable than life is people."

Hotaru vaguely remembered her father muttering that phrase to himself once upon a time. If she recalled correctly, he had gotten into an argument with the neighbor; they had decided to claim one of his tools as their own, and when he put up a fight, things escalated into a shouting match. Eventually, he conceded, but not until making it clear that there was no longer a camaraderie between the two. She had thought it was awfully silly to get into an argument over a wrench of all things, but it had also been unexpected. Until that point, their neighbor was someone reliable and respected, and there was no reason to think a tool would be what would ultimately crack the friendship. And thus came the saying, her father advising her to be wary of people.

That said, the unpredictability of the lord's son was definitely something Hotaru had underestimated.

Having to hold in her initial shock when she had laid eyes on her former master's son was more difficult than keeping her calm in general. Her head was buzzing with questions, the primary "why?" being at the forefront. She hadn't expected to see anyone who she recognized, much less him. And of course, he was doing what he always did: standing up for people. But he didn't belong here, he had a life ready for him! It was actually frustrating her the more she thought about it, and watching the instructor speak to him was more painful than she considered.

Of course, outwardly she couldn't bring herself to worry or to let her expression show she cared at all. Her plan was to keep her head low, get through training, and hopefully come out on top so she could choose to be in the Military Police. Then she could live out her life in peace and with the freedom she wanted. Easier said than done, of course, and she had no idea what her prowess would end up being, but it was worth a shot. Having some sort of goal was better than being aimless, anyway.

Why would Eris fuck with Wells' livelihood? He hadn't done something to piss him off yet. Honestly, it was like the kid didn't even know him. Eris openly rolled his eyes as the thought crossed his mind, albeit he let it go once Wells actually agreed with his idea. Fuck yeah, Eris one, stupid exam zero. Now, all they had to do was solve the constellation and they'd be home free. Maybe if they succeeded, he could keep his sight! They may as well let him keep seeing as a reward, otherwise what was even the point?

Of course, Eris didn't quite appreciate the shade. Even if Wells didn't care, knowing the exact shades helped when it came to picking out outfits, the last thing he needed was to get dragged by the red carpet paparazzi because he chose to wear maroon instead of blood red like some kind of--okay, he was getting off track. But they were going to revisit that topic whether the kid wanted to or not.

"Alright, fine, but we're revisiting the intricacy of the color wheel and their many shades down the line and you'll get what I mean," Eris couldn't help himself, faking the sound of clearing his throat loudly so Wells wouldn't stop to make some kind of smartass comment. "We'll start with the same one as before, then go to the upper right. After that, I'll call it as we go along," He said, flexing his fingers as he held his hand out.

"Three, two, one--go."

A little miffed that @Scribe of Thoth doesn't appreciate the difference between blonde and daffodil, like seriously, these things MATTER.
Just a kiss

Well, Yasuhide was definitely the first to make the comparison without making some kind of pun, so that much Asuka appreciated. That said, once the word 'doctor' left his mouth, Asuka had to hold back a groan of indigence. Why must the universe insist on steering her in a direction she so utterly despised? Clearing her throat, she offered a polite laugh to his words, pursing her lips as her fingers drummed her knees.

Fortunately, she was saved from having to give a response as the Dean commanded silence from the entire room. It was kinda impressive, but she had to admit that feeling dwindled the more the speech went on. Weren't these things supposed to be more awe-inspiring? Maybe he was trying to wheedle out the cowards, but Asuka didn't exactly feel intimidated by it. Survival of the fittest was probably what he was trying to get at, but that also didn't really seem very heroic. Oh well, she wasn't in a position of authority so she didn't care. All she wanted to do was graduate, get popular, and rake in the adoration she deserved.

Once the speech ended, everyone moved around them--other students who already knew where to go, the difference between them and the newcomers obvious at everyone who stayed in place. Asuka suppressed her sigh, her right hand tossing her hair over her shoulder as she flashed a smile at Yasuhide. "Well, that was enlightening," She joked, pausing as she noticed an odd tension in his expression. What, he could pelt someone and laugh it off but get intimidated by a speech from an old guy trying way too hard to spook the freshman? She waited a few seconds for a response, finding none. Maybe he was lost in thought.

Asuka placed her hand on his shoulder as she tried to get his attention. "Yasuhide-san? Is everything okay?" She asked him gently.

Eris' touch didn't seem to do anything much to his confusion. Damn, he really thought they were onto something. He frowned to himself, squinting down to see if anything happened over on Wells' end. He did notice the light pulsing, trying to think of what it could mean. He was pretty sure it reacted because they did it together, so the syncing up wasn't the problem. The problem was that what they did wasn't enough. Not that he thought just one action would solve the puzzle, but he expected something more. Anything obvious, some sort of sign or clue or...

"Wait a minute..." He muttered, his eyebrows shooting up. "I think I saw something happen when you touched them, right?" The gears in his head were turning as he spoke, something clicking in his head as he shook his hands. "The stars' constellations--I think we have to trace the whole constellation out, the lines lit up between them. We just have to stay coordinated and light the entire thing up."

That just had to be it. And to think there was the possibility that he almost doubted himself earlier. Except that possibility was fact and he wasn't entirely sure he was onto something. He was so sure before but without properly testing it, he was still a little shaky on his theory. But going off his gut produced some kind of result, so it couldn't be completely off base, right?

"We could just try it and see what happens. Maybe," Eris eyed the light getting closer, a little leery.
