Fire Emblem: The Slumbering Goddess

First up is relevant to anyone wanting spells for any reason--this is not limited to mages, but to anyone that decides to take up Faith or Reason. For each rank (from D to A) a spell is learned. Your character can pick any from each column as they rank up.

Black Magic is the typical elemental-based spell. For this rp there's a elemental square where each element triumphs over the other (in the order of Fire -> Blizzard -> Thunder -> Wind -> Fire) but that doesn't mean having only fire spells means running into a mage with wind is gonna be a bad time.

Dark Magic requires reason but for RP purposes will be considered a separate parameter; it requires lessons from the resident Dark Bishop Tomai. Dark magic has a variety of effects and are all non-elemental compared to their elemental counterparts.

White Magic has an assortment of spells, most of them recovery based. Some of the higher tiers also have unique effects against enemies.

Anyone that starts out as a Mage will be on Rank D at the start of the RP so they have some way to defend themselves in battle. Anyone that does not have either Faith or Reason as a Strength will have to build their magic from Rank E.

Once the Church stepped in and verified his Crest, he quickly gained support from houses that oppose the king. He is something of a stoic young man, constantly watching his back as if he is on edge; he has said he only feels free when he has a lance in his hand. Despite shaking things up in Faerghus, he keeps his head low and tries to stay out of trouble.

Located at Garreg Mach Monastery, the royalty and nobility of the Adrestian Empire, Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and Leicester Alliance send their heirs to the Officers Academy to learn the art of warfare. The Officers Academy was established sometime around Imperial Year 980 in response to incursions into Fódlan from the powerful eastern kingdom of Almyra. The archbishop at the time believed that the Church of Seiros had a responsibility to raise a generation of nobility to excellence to guarantee the continent's leadership was prepared for the future. Serving as a microcosm of Fódlan, students are organized into one of three academic houses according to their nationality: the Black Eagles for the Adrestian Empire, the Blue Lions for the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and the Golden Deer for the Leicester Alliance.

With the passing of Archbishop Asclepius, this year's students are guided by the newest Archbishop named Ioannis. With the help of the second-in-command, a woman by the name of Arianthe, the church looks to educate and welcome all. Despite a tumultuous decade of fighting off disease and an assortment of scandals, all are in agreement with the hope for a peaceful future. However, under the surface lies a force seeking to dismantle the unknowingly fragile bonds between nations. Will the students ride the wave of change, or will the flow of time swallow them all?

The World of Fódlan

The Church of Seiros

The Church of Seiros, also called the Central Church, is the main religious organization in Fódlan. Its headquarters is Garreg Mach Monastery in the Oghma Mountains of central Fódlan, a neutral territory that is also home to the Officers Academy. A neutral power, they maintain peace around the continent by keeping the other three nations in check.

The Church's founder and namesake, Saint Seiros, was said to have been given a revelation, a "gift to help guide the lost", from the Goddess who was watching over Fódlan. Seiros first appeared in the Enbarr region of Fódlan 41 years before the founding of the Adrestian Empire. She performed miracles that inspired the people, and the Church of Seiros was founded to venerate her.

The Adrestian Empire was founded in Imperial Year 0 by Great Emperor Wilhelm I, with Enbarr chosen as its capital due to the presence of Seiros. In Imperial Year 32, Wilhelm I launched the War of Heroes with the goal of conquering all of Fódlan for the Empire. Nemesis, the King of Liberation, united the Empire's opponents under his leadership. Seiros finally slew Nemesis at the Battle of Tailtean in Imperial Year 91, but the war did not end until 98, when Wilhelm I's successor, Lycaon I, succumbed to illness.

In Imperial Year 751, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus seceded from the Empire after winning the War of the Eagle and Lion. The Church crowned Faerghus's first king, Loog of House Blaiddyd, and granted his nation autonomy. In 801, the region of Leicester rebelled against the Empire, and the Kingdom took the opportunity to occupy the region. In 861, the death of King Klaus I led his three sons to partition the Kingdom into three parts, with each of them ruling a certain part as an archduke. The death of the archduke of Leicester in 881 gave the Leicester lords the chance to form an alliance rather than accept his heir, sparking the Crescent Moon War. In 901, the war ended with the founding of the Leicester Alliance under the leadership of the influential Duke of Riegan. The constant threat of invasion from countries surrounding the continent eventually forced these three powers to band together under the Church.

In the present era, the three nations exist in relative peace and equilibrium, largely thanks to the mediating influence of the Church. The Church also runs the Officers Academy, which trains the royalty and nobility of Fódlan in the arts of warfare, magic, and leadership. Garreg Mach Monastery is the headquarters of two separate entities: the Church of Seiros and the Officers Academy. It is a neutral territory, not governed by any of the three nations of Fódlan. In addition to being a religious site, the monastery is home to an elite order of knights.

Crests

Key to the nations of Fódlan are Crests, magical sigils passed down through families that play key roles in the continent's history and politics.

Believed to be blessings bestowed by the Goddess, Crests grant special powers to those who hold them such as high aptitude for magic, enhanced strength, and other boons that give them an edge over others. Crests are inherited by blood and thus recipients of Crests come from an ancestor who likewise had the same Crest. The actual Crest inheritance varies greatly. In most cases, the singular child of a family inherits a Crest, but in some cases, multiple children of the same generation can inherit the same Crest.

Being a Crest holder is not physically obvious and leaves no mark on its bearers. However, those who possess them may have certain qualities such as unnatural strength that indicate their status as Crest holders. Soem centuries ago an avid scholar of Crests, developed a device that can show an individual their Crest. These days most churches are in possession of one due to the archbishop at the time stating that it was a service of the church.

In Fódlan, Crests have had a significant impact on society. They are often seen as a sign of prestige and respect. Many noble houses value crests and are desperate to obtain one as a sign of their nobility. Some have been known to marry or adopt individuals of lesser houses or even commoners who have spontaneously inherited a Crest just to obtain one should their heirs by birthright lack a Crest. The crest is not universally inherited by the eldest child, leading to power struggles within houses when a younger sibling is born with one. Houses are known to disown or otherwise disregard all other non-crest bearing children, heaving all expectations on the crest bearer while ignoring the others. The Church does not condone this behavior but does not intervene.

Crests are classified as either Major Crests that contain immense power, or Minor Crests that contain weaker, but somewhat potent power. Generally, it is believed that the stronger that a hero's blood runs within an heir, the higher the chance of that heir possessing a Major Crest. It is still possible for a child from a distant branch of a bloodline to be born with a Major Crest unexpectedly and it is unknown why this occurs.

The Adrestian Empire - Black Eagles

The Adrestian Empire encompasses the southern part of Fódlan, a relatively lush and bountiful region with ample access to the sea. It is ruled by a dynasty that can be traced back over 1,000 years to its legendary founder, Great Emperor Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg, who is said to have been crowned by Saint Seiros herself. Its capital city is Enbarr, the largest city in Fódlan, which was chosen for its association with Seiros. Adrestian Empire Founding Day is celebrated annually on the 1st of the Great Tree Moon.

The Adrestian Empire is a hereditary monarchy with a rigid hierarchy. All important government ministries and leadership positions are passed down through the same noble families, generation after generation, although that has not stopped political maneuvering among the nobles.

House Hresvelg, the royal family, wielded supreme authority over the Empire until Insurrection of the Seven in Imperial Year 1171, in which much of its power was stripped away by the nobility. The head of House Aegir occupies the post of prime minister, with the title being hereditary. House Vestra is responsible for managing the darker tasks of the Empire, as well the emperor's periphery affairs, including coordinating affairs such as ceremonies and rituals, Imperial consorts, and the Imperial Guard. House Hevring has rule over the Empire's domestic affairs, particularly those relating to administration, finance, and the judiciary. House Bergliez rules over the Empire's Ministry of Military Affairs and commands all of the armies that do not directly belong to the emperor. House Varley is responsible for the Empire's Ministry of Religion, whose main responsibility is to maintain amiable relations with the Church of Seiros. House Gerth directs Empire's diplomacy, foreign relations, and relations between various provinces and the capital. It worked hard to secure the ceasefires that ended the Dagda and Brigid War in 1175.

The Plague that Swept the Empire

The Plague came stronger than most but ravaged the Empire all the same. The borders were closed in an attempt to contain it, but all measures were fruitless. It was uncommon to hear families that didn't lose someone to it and for years the Empire struggled to recover. The worst came when it ravaged the royal family, killing five of the seven children of the Emperor, and the eldest committed suicide out of grief. In an effort to retain power, the Emperor's last living relative was arranged to another to give the lineage another heir. While most agree that it is the proper course of action, some have said the marriage was a play for power, others believe that the Emperor's hands are tied, and others feel that there have been a few too many new faces around the Emperor.

The Leicester Alliance - Golden Deer

The Leicester Alliance is located in eastern Fódlan, a temperate region of plains and mountains. Leicester Alliance Founding Day is celebrated annually on the 8th of the Horsebow Moon. In contrast with the other two countries of Fódlan, the Alliance's relationship with the Church of Seiros is neither especially warm nor antagonistic.

Unlike other territories, the Leicester Alliance is a league of multiple noble families who refuse to swear fealty to any king or emperor. Instead, the Alliance is ruled jointly as a republic through roundtable conferences between the five most prominent allied dukes called the the Five Great Lords, which is led by House Riegan and joined by the heads of House Goneril, House Gloucester, House Daphnel and House Edmund, all of which convene at the capital city of Derdriu. Each house's territory is technically an autonomous region, though they all swear reciprocal oaths of allegiance to each other.

Although membership in the Roundtable is generally hereditary, it is not permanent; House Ordelia was once a member of the Roundtable, but has lost their position due to recent events.

Students from the Leicester Alliance are members of the Golden Deer.

The Failed Coup D'état

The Leicester Alliance was shaken when Duke Ordelia slayed Duke Gloucester in what was supposed to be a mock battle. None of the other houses would have ever suspected that Duke Ordelia had held any ill will towards Gloucester, with his troops surrendering immediately. The battle, however, was brief--the decision was reckless and served only to drown morale, with many troops outright throwing down their arms and refusing to fight. Only Duke Ordelia was taken in and tried before the Great Lords, who unanimously decided that the House of Ordelia would lose their seat as a Lord and replaced with House Daphnel. While the shakeup was recent, there are those that feel the actions of one should not have resulted in something so drastic. Rumor has it that Ordelia is on its last legs, and some say the duke had been encouraged by others to take action.

The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus - Blue Lions

The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus lies in the north of Fódlan, a cold, rugged land that has forced its people to adapt. It is ruled by the royal House Blaiddyd and a number of knightly orders. The nation was founded by Loog, the legendary King of Lions. Its capital city is Fhirdiad, which is also home to a prestigious school of sorcery. Holy Kingdom of Faerghus Founding Day is celebrated annually on the 21st of the Red Wolf Moon.

Due to the harsh environment, children are trained to wield a weapon before they are taught to read and write. Since it was founded thanks to mediation from the Church of Seiros, the country's royal family and most nobles are both pious and enduring supporters of the church. The Kingdom's military is disciplined and instilled with a strong sense of chivalry and duty. The Kingdom army is known to rely on its knights, with House Gaspard and Gautier renowned for their cavalry while Galatea was famed for their pegasus.

Students from the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus are members of the Blue Lions.

The Fight for the Throne

For years the Kingdom of Faerghus has had only one recognized heir. However, in recent days another has been revealed to the world: the previous king had taken on a secret lover whose child bore a Major Crest. Said child has now made a claim for the throne, fracturing the nobility. Some agree that the current heir is already poised and ready to take leadership. Others argue that the bastard shouldn't have any stake, their Major Crest has given them an edge, especially after their Crest was recognized by the Church of Seiros. The fighting has been mostly kept under wraps, as the Kingdom's current regent has made no inclination as to which they support.

A graduate of Adrestia's top magic college, Tomai made a small name for himself refining Crest-discovery devices for the masses. His knowledge is only second to his wit, and while he would much rather be alone studying, he assures his students that he keeps an open door policy. Oddly enough, he does not seem to worship Seiros, having little interest in the Goddess and her teachings.

A Knight of Seiros who is tasked with protecting the students, the only thing he likes more than a good fight is a beautiful person at his side. He's extremely easy going and loves to socialize, always up for a quick chat or spar even with a pile of paperwork waiting on his desk. Despite his flaws, he has a good sense of justice for all and became a professor to make a difference in the world.

Formerly a renowned socialite in Faerghus society, she is a charming woman with an apparent sweet-and-spicy deposition. It has some merit; she is as sweet as she is hot headed, quick to jump to someone's aide but just as fast to start up an argument. Either way she usually insists on keeping up the nicer side of her, perky and peppy most of the time. She cherishes her students and friends and seeks to keep everyone on good terms.

She was formerly a cleric, having an extraordinary talent in healing from a young age. She has been with the church her whole life and yearns to explore Fódlan, but says she is needed at Garreg Mach. Huo's victory had left the captain completely trapped, the man spouting a variety of nonsense. The fisherman, Bido, poked his head out from the fishery, in awe of the scene before him. The people that had stuck around out of sheer curiosity were also in quiet awe of the scene that had unfolded before them. A few courageous kids approached the ice, surprised that the captain had been detained.

Bido approached Huo, looking him up and down. "Well! I guess the swamp people really do have their own way of doing things," He noted, scratching his head. He looked towards the town, letting out a huff. "Guess I should wait 'till things settle down, but uh...if you're looking to play some shogi later, ask for Ena. She'll show you a good game." His words likely made little sense but he said them low enough only for Huo to hear.

Zai's sudden flames had Ena on alert, although she put both her hands up in front of her as he noticed the shift from question to accusation. She shook her head, hoping to deescalate with what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "I'd ask you why you know him, but..." She was interrupted by the sudden soldier popping up. Zai reacted faster than she did and the next thing she knew was that she was being dragged through the streets. The boy was deaf to any complaint and she had to focus more on not tripping or stumbling, his iron grip not giving her any leeway in form of slipping out.

It wasn't until he came to a halt that Ena's luck ended, and while he was lucky not to trip, the sudden stop and him still holding on to her caused her to lose her balance. It wasn't until he let go that she actually fell, slamming her hands to the ground to avoid eating any dirt. She threw a glare up at Zai while she picked herself up, dusting herself off. She paused at Tao's words, letting out a tiny sigh.

"I think I'm the one he's talking about. This one's innocent in all this," Ena admitted, albeit she wasn't expecting Zai to just take off. "Wha--hey! Don't--"

She quickly gave up, knowing he wasn't going to stop for anything. Instead, she gave the waterbender her full attention, pointing both her fingers at him. "I can't leave the fishery defenseless, so I have to stand my ground here. If you're an ally, help me. Or...at least don't tell them where the guy ran off to. Refugees are quick to scare, so he's probably going to go hide somewhere. Hopefully."

The rumbling got closer, and at that point, it was time for her to make her stand. "I'm Ena of the Lily Blade. If you're going to flee, just ask for me at the Inn later, when things have calmed down. You'll get pointed in the right direction," She promised, withdrawing her sword and waiting for the rumbling of the earthbenders to get closer.

Asher shook Justinian's hand, listening to his words. He seemed a little thoughtful at the mention of his element, albeit his last comment outright made him laugh. "I would've mentioned if there was anything else. No disappearances, lots of strange noises since harpies like to sing at night but that wouldn't be strange to the townfolk, no missing pets. Sir," He added hastily, realizing much too late that he likely wasn't being as proper as he should have been. "All equipment is in the next tent over. Since the town's used to dealing with the occasional violent harpy, I'm sure you'll find everything there that you need."

He tilted his head and seemed to have something to say, his eyes darting to Bianca. When she nodded, he asked, "So earth and...?" He looked at Theobald.

"Fire," Bianca answered.

"Earth and fire. Was hoping for wind and gravity," He admitted, scratching the back of his head. "With no way to stop them from flying, we'll have to take care none of those rocks or flames hit the town. But hey, it wouldn't be fun if it wasn't a challenge!" He perked up immediately, clapping his hands together and striding over to the entrance of the tent.

It was a bright day, with clouds lazily rolling over head. "The main pack is up on Garda Mountain, the tallest one around here on the right side if you look over there," He pointed it out. "Our priority has been the safety of the civilians. So I guess it's up to you to go whack them around if you're thinking of going straight to the nest. Though, if you are, I can guide you there. Their attack will come in two hours so if you're considering attacking, now's the time to do so. Otherwise, we can wait for them to come to us and set up an ambush."

Croia

Renata let out a tiny sigh as Sara claimed Jannick was kind, her experience saying otherwise. Her question provoked some thought, though Jannick preventing her from poking at Hollyhock caused her to scowl at him. At the mention of this new position, however, her jaw dropped.

“Chosen by the Chosen…I never would have imagined,” She told Jannick. The new information seemed to finally stop her in her tracks, eyes darting between each one of them and processing everything. She did lean away from Jannick a touch, trying to get closer to Hollyhock. Her dutiful Templar remained firm in his grip, making her look much like a child trying to get away from their parent even as she continued to lean away, complete with a pout on her face.

Only when she stood straight for a few seconds did she turn back to Sara, bowing her head slightly. "All harbor the blessing of Incepta that protects them, should they keep their faith. Harboring a blessing is as simple as breathing the air around us, to partake in the fruit that grows, to feel the waves of the shores," She stated proudly. "I suppose the spirits aren't necessarily children, but instead creations that She has placed here. They're terribly upset about something, why would they harm someone looking to understand why they're upset? By that logic, I will not be harmed should I enter the forest."

The knight scoffed. "Except everyone that has gone there ends up with their corpses dumped at the entrance," He stated. "Which is why we insist on barring your entry--for your own good."

"And I insist that I will not be harmed," Renata made an attempt to stomp over to the knight, only stopped by Jannick still holding her wrist. She brandished her free hand at the knight, pointing at him accusingly. "And yet he who suffers from his little faith sees to it that the town continues to suffer! If it wasn't for your insistence on laced shoes like the lazy bum you are, the blessing would be stronger in you! They're terrible! And I saw you throw down that wrapper on the grass! Not only daring to eat on duty but deciding to discard things at whim! Treat the earth as you have treated your body lest you let it fall to dismay, you absolute degenerate!"

The knight stared at Renata as Jannick dragged her back a step. “Renata,” he warned sternly, glaring down at her.

The blonde looked up at Jannick, anger simmering down a touch. “I speak only in truths. Gaia is delicate right now,” She grumbled, though she did steal a glance to see if he was still looking at her. “And did you see those laces? Atrocious.”

Letting out another huff, she straightened up a touch. "Now, then. Shall we go? I can't imagine Holy Scions are only here to bear witness to an atrociously underdressed knight," She changed gears entirely.

Dumont

Dr. Rhaveus listened intently as each Scion and Templar spoke, the pen hovering over his notebook scribbling madly, apparently writing far more words than were actually said. It continued to scratch at the notebook for several moments after Scion Maya finished, the professor deep in thought.

“Interesting, interesting,” he murmured to himself, beginning to pace back and forth in front of the blackboard. “So the effect was prolonged for both of you, but only one suffered other ill effects…”

He seemed oblivious of Sir Tyler’s accusation, fiddling with the button on his sleeve as he paced. His brow furrowed, and he looked as if something was not sitting right.

“Do you recall if any other Scions present suffered the same symptoms as you, Your Highness?” he asked Lucas, not even sparing him a glance. Instead, he crossed over to a messenger bag propped up against the podium, muttering a spell as he rifled through it. A faint light pulsed in the mouth of the bag and Dr. Rhaveus produced a very well-used coil-bound notebook, flipping through its contents.

“It’s just so strange…” he muttered again, eyes fervently searching the pages. At length, he finally looked up to his audience.

“My apologies, Your Holiness…es,” he excused himself awkwardly, making a face, “It’s just that… well, I expected the symptoms to be much worse.”

He glanced back and forth at the book again, then waved a hand. As if from a projector, a scene materialized on the blackboard behind him, showing a white rat in a cage with a bulky machine pointed at it. The professor himself was visible in the background, clad in a white lab coat smeared with a dark fluid and fiddling with something on the machine. After a moment, he stepped out of the room, reappearing on the other side of a thick pane of glass.

The scene had no sound, but the rat jumped as a component on the machine began to spin. Dr. Rhaveus watched from the window, transfixed. After a moment, the rat began to run frantically around the cage, climbing the bars; soon after, it fell to the floor of the cage, twitching and spasming until finally going still. Behind the glass, Dr. Rhaveus jumped for joy.

The image darkened. “As you can see, in my first successful trial, the rat I subjected to artificial mana negation displayed the typical symptoms of mana poisoning: excited delirium, excruciating pain, and promptly, death.”

“Now, as I said, we don’t fully understand how our enemy employed mana negation to attack Scion Theodore. But I had been operating under two theories: either the enemy had a way to target specific individuals with their mana negating device, or that Scions are somehow uniquely capable of surviving the mana poisoning that results. Scions have been shown to possess unique qualities to their mana, so that hypothesis was not out of the question. However, I considered the former theory more likely, since there were no reports of anything unusual around the site of Scion Theodore’s disappearance. If the mana negation was not tightly targeted, I would expect it to have affected the surrounding area - killing any nearby plants, for example, or manifesting tainted mana.”

The professor closed the notebook, looking visibly uneasy as he resumed his pacing. “But I was troubled when I heard about the New Years events. For mana negation to have been deployed on that wide a scale, without directly harming any of the other attendees, is far beyond my capability to replicate. I suppose it’s possible for it to have been a targeted attack, but with the Scions so intermingled with the crowd - and in your case, Scion Maya, on the ceiling - I don’t see how they could have avoided any collateral damage. Add to it now the fact that the symptoms were inconsistent among the Scions, and I struggle to explain it…”

“But it’s not all bad news,” he continued, looking to the Templars. “From what you tell me, it sounds like your armour nullified the effects of the mana negation. That’s excellent news - it means we aren’t completely helpless.” He nodded, almost to himself. He seemed to be forming a plan as he spoke. “It accords with my current understanding of Templar armour, as well. I’ll have to ask Dame Irina if I can borrow a sample to study…”

It took another moment of pacing for the professor to finally remember Sir Tyler’s objection. He looked up, surprised, as if the Templar had only just uttered the words. “I also thought it strange that Duke Colton would come all the way to Dumont just to speak to me,” he agreed, “but it actually used to be fairly common for Kaudians to seek out Doumerc’s universities. I suppose the timing was… unfortunate.”

He shrugged, not too concerned about the matter. “He was looking for information on the inheritance of Scion attributes - but rest assured, I didn’t tell him anything he couldn’t readily apprehend from any other scholar of mana studies. The study of Scion inheritance is an extremely active field in this country, especially at Ombres, where I usually work. He could have picked up any academic journal in publication and found everything I told him and more.”
