“Alright, sounds like a plan,” Astaroth agreed. If he had a better idea, he would have voiced it by now. At the moment, this job was simply a divide-n-conquer to gather some more information, if at all possible. The funny business shows up once the sun goes down. “I say we meet back at the guild hall entrance at sundown. Until then, we can do whatever we deem necessary. Good luck, Elize.” He started to make his way towards the patrol outpost, beckoning Maho to follow him, “Let’s not waste any time.”

“Right.” Maho nodded, strolling after the blue robed wizard. Fishing in her pocket, she pulled out a candy and stuffed it in her mouth. “So, how long have you been in the guild? Are all the jobs as odd as this one?” she asked, trying to strike a conversation. It interested her to hear more about this guild thing. The girl was still undecided. On one hand, it seemed like a friendly place enough. On the other though, she wasn’t certain she could trust these people. She was a thief herself after all - who knew what kinds of people could be hiding among their ranks.

“Three years,” Astaroth answered instantly. “Come to think of it, I haven’t dealt with something like this in a month or two. Life is usually pretty slow until the occasional ‘dramatic quest’ pops up. Does that answer your question?” They had to walk clear across town to get to the patrol outpost, and endure all the untrusting looks the townspeople gave them. Astaroth habitually rubbed the side of his neck, where his guild mark resided.

“Mhm.” Maho nodded, her tongue too busy with the cocoa candy to form words. “How did you come to join, if you do not mind me asking?” she said after a while. A few seconds later she realized she might get the question asked back in return and regretted even asking it,but it was out now. After all it wouldn’t be the first time she told the fake story, but gor the first time she felt a little bad about having to do it. She didn’t care of the rest of the guild, but the two that were with her now seemed to accept her, and deep down she didn’T want to hold any secrets from them. Perhaps in time, when she was sure she could trust them, she would tell the true tale.

“The rent was cheap and the beer was cheaper,” Astaroth answered. That was part of the answer, but he didn’t exactly trust Maho with all of his personal information either. He immediately returned the question, “What brings you here?” The more idle conversation they had, the less bored Astaroth was. It made the long trip to the patrol office more bearable.

“You can see I am one of the younger people in the guild. I stumbled upon a tome that explained about the concealment magic one day and was enthralled by it. I am not too strong, and it is much safer to be invisible when walking the streets after night. Jack the Ripper here case in point.” she started, “I joined up to see more of magic. I want to see all of it. It was here that i started learning about the telepathy actually, to be able to cover more jobs.” she said, the lie rolling off of her tongue as easily as if it was crystal pure truth.

“There are a lot of stories like yours,” Astaroth observed partially to himself, “but it doesn’t give them any less meaning.” Sooner or later, they stumbled upon the aforementioned patrol outpost. “We’re here,” the illusionist pointed out flatly. “I’d keep any shenanigans to a minimum; the police are already looking for an excuse to arrest us. We’re just going to walk in and politely ask for any intel on Jack the Ripper. Let me take the lead on this. I’m good at talking.”
I wonder how close my Wikipedia binge is to what is actually true. I'd be super proud of myself if I'm even remotely close.
"Sounds fair enough." Astaroth agreed to Maho's plan. "If Maho's volunteering to be bait, Elize and I can shadow you and surprise this Ripper fellow should he bite." Now that he was outdoors, the illusionist instinctively pulled his hood up over his head. His cyan eyes almost appeared to be slightly luminescent under its shade. Astaroth pulled the request paper out of his cloak and held it in front of him. "If I remember correctly..." he began to speak, but trailed off. Astaroth studied the paper for a few more seconds, coming up with what he was going to say. "This actually gives us a fairly educated guess on what we're dealing with."

"For starters," he began, "we know he specifically targets women. That alone isn't much to go by, but it's something to keep in mind. However..." Astaroth held up the finger for emphasis and continued, "What's really interesting here is not who he is terrorizing, but when."

"Let me explain," the blue robed mage smacked the paper with the back of his hand for punctuation. "He always strikes during a time known as the witching hour. Now, if I have my facts straight, the witching hour is a period of time starting at midnight and ending at around three in the morning. Little-known fact: it's also the time where black magics are supposedly at their most powerful. With that in mind, I can hazard a guess that Jack the Ripper is either a supernatural monster, werewolf, vampire, etc., or that he uses some other dark magic."

Astaroth pocketed the paper again, his shpiel complete. "It's just a hypothesis based on one sheet of paper, however. We'll need to do some proper investigating, like Maho suggested, before we try and hunt this guy down." He started walking off again, until he suddenly added, "Oh! My name is Astaroth, by the way. Welcome to Phoenix Wing, Maho."
Maybe "Complete exhaustion" wasn't the proper word choice. If it bothers people that much, I'll change/remove the last paragraph of my post. I sincerely apologize for my lack of forethought and the drama it created. It won't happen again.
Well, as I've said earlier in the CS, illusions that span the entire guild are relatively easy to break out of and/or short lived. In this case, the effects would last for about a minute, if that. Astaroth didn't invest much magic into the illusion because he wasn't affecting much, relative to what he's capable of. It was mostly just to create a pause in the fighting for him to leave, or to even break it up. Also, in the end, Perception Magic is completely harmless; any sort of meddling Astaroth did would be completely undone by the time the spell ended, in this particular case.
Astaroth has engaged in the mild trolling. Mwahaha. :P
(Another collab brought to you by Dusk, Forsythe, and myself)

It all seemed a bit too easy. She expected some struggling and the more senior members hogging the good jobs. But alas her comrade candidate picked the two jobs she has been looking at herself. She wasn't certain what kind of magic he possessed, but he wouldn't pick them if he didn't think he could contribute or do them himself, right?

It didn't take a genius to see which job would be easier - Protecting a caravan sounded like actual work that would last for several days. Maho wasn't thrilled by that idea. Humming as if she was thinking about her choice, she pointed to the poster wanting Jack the Ripper. She was about to speak, but another stranger approached, asking to get in on the action. "Hello to you. Well, I can be a bait." Maho said, and vanished. She reappeared behind the two of them without any sound of footsteps. "I can escape if push comes to shove, but I'd need backup actually catching him. Either of you can help?" she asked, not really minding if they all went. If her plan to be a bait caught their eye, she wouldn’t mind having a small army behind her back, and split three ways, the money was still good.

Astaroth was visibly unfazed by Maho’s antics, replying only with a curt nod. He returned the caravan mission to the board, and then turned to the two girls that seemed to join him. “So it’s us three, then?” he asked evenly, double-checking if they were with him or not. He had seen Elize in the guild before. She was a B-class mage if Astaroth remembered correctly, so he shouldn’t have to do too much protecting. Maho he’d never seen before, so the blue robed mage didn’t know how she’d fare in a fight. She had also volunteered to be bait for this mission, so Astaroth had to watch out for the inevitable ambush this Jack the Ripper would attempt.

Elize chuckled at Maho’s little disappearing act, but something at the bottom of her stomach warned her that it was a dangerous position to be bait for this guy. She didn’t really doubt their ability to handle the situation, but the risks were there, and a good wizard had to keep those in mind. Then again, even if they were faced with nigh impossible odds, Elize would most likely still go. She turned to Astaroth, “It looks like it. That jerk’ll be off the streets in no time!” She affirmed, giving an excited fist-pump to show her enthusiasm. It came to mind that she didn’t actually know what Astaroth could do, but hey, he looked like he could hold his own.

Maho smiled for real this time, her mood up. The other woman’s cheerful attitude was rubbing off on her. Picking the job was hardly time to celebrate though. It still needed to be done. “Umm, my apologies, but I am still new here. Would you mind if I ask what is it you do?” she asked shyly, and switched to her mental voice, ”I already shown you my cards, I am skilled in concealment magic and a telepath. And the name is Maho.”* her voice said in Astaroth’s and Elize’s heads.

“Telepathy and invisibility, huh?” Astaroth parroted Maho’s explanation back to her, “Neat. Sound’s useful, Maho.” He already knew what Elize did, so he needed no explanation from her. Astaroth turned his attention to the other guildmembers in the hall with an eyebrow raised. It was an all-out brawl for the sake of brawling, it seems. “I’ll…” he eyed the crowd, feeling obligated to break up the fighting, “meet you outside.” With guildmaster Jaime now fully involved, things could get… rowdy.

Without another word, Astaroth starting to make his way out of the guild hall. As he left, he whistled a jaunty tune louder than your average whistle. In fact, he didn’t even really need a trigger; all the mages were plenty distracted already. With that in mind, he simply reached out with his magic to seize the minds of all the guildmages, sans his team and Jaime. Anyone ensnared by the blue robed mage’s Perception Magic would suddenly find themselves completely exhausted and sore from all the fighting, and with their reserves of magic power all but depleted.
^What Toaw said.
Maho and I are partners, by the way. :D I can't say anything for the other guys, but I like where things are.
From what I gathered, my team right now consist of me, Maho, Minah, and maybe Elize depending. Am I right so far?
