S T O R YAmelia was the unexcepted daughter of Evelyn and Thomas Averyonna, born eighteen years after her older brother Alexander from a town a few days walk from Valibree village. From the day she was born, it was apparent that Amelia was not the healthiest child around. Her immune system was bad at the best of times and dismal at the worst of times. As if that wasn't bad enough, the girl has never been able to utter a word, being a born mute. Despite this, Amelia's parents treated her with as much love as they could and did whatever was needed for their little girl.
Sadly, it seemed that Amelia was to be a cursed child, as three years after her birth, her parents died in an accident while away from home. This event was when her young life started going into a deep downward spiral, as she was put into the care of her older brother. Alexander never liked his sister and there was very little if any love for her in his heart. A party boy and slightly spoiled brat, the idea of suddenly being responsible for his younger sisters life and well-being did not sit well with him at all.
Alexander's style of raising his sister was the bare minimum, sometimes less. He home schooled her to save money, by which he taught her how to read, write, and do basic math for a few minutes a day, never more, he only bought her enough clothes for her to wear for a week, and when it came to toys and entertainment, she got nothing except for what she came with.
When he wasn't out partying or taking care of his little sister, however minor that care was, Alexander often found it amusing to abuse his sister. While he was usually in some sort of drunk or hungover state, Alexander was clever and never actually laid a hand on her. Instead, he referred to attack her mentally and emotionally. One of the worse occasions occurred when she was the ripe young age of five, when he locked her in the shed behind their house during a massive story as it hit the city, leaving her alone lightning lit the place up in scary ways to her young, imaginative mind and thunder shook the small building. The experience has left the girl with a crippling fear of thunder and lightning, as such things always bring that memory up to the forefront. Another one of his favorite tactics was blaming Amelia for all the misfortunes that happened to them, including the death of their parents, and doing whatever he could to damage her self-esteem.
This has gone on for seven years and during this time, Amelia found an escape through art. At first, it was the crayons she had arrived with but given all her free time, those did not last very long. After they were gone, she moved on to whatever she could find around the house: Pencils, pens, markers, whatever it was, if it could be used on paper, she made it work. Alexander usually belittled her works and tore them up to scraps, but Amelia kept at it, enjoying the escape from her situation the activity afforded her. Eventually though, it wasn't enough. Alexander's abuse was escalating and Amelia was nearing her breaking point.
It was at this point, the Goddess intervened. She appeared to Amelia in a dream and gave the young girl the courage to sneak out one night while Alexander was away and get out of the city. That happened a week ago and Amelia has been on the move ever since, walking most of the day and braving the cold in cloths that were not meant for such weather. Thankfully, the Goddess has been guiding her and the Harvest Sprites have helped in making sure the young girl makes it to Valbree in decent enough health that her life isn't in danger.
Alexander has not filed a Missing Persons report and is in no rush to do so. It's to much work for someone he doesn't care about.
