Edward Lachance

19 year old human from Barilla.

Role: Edward is a front-line fighter through and through. Without access to ranged weaponry, he'll invariably take the vanguard despite lacking a Font.

Weapon: Ed's weapon is actually a pair of weapons-- a broad, bladed shield able to be used as a slashing weapon or a defensive tool, and a thin sword, equally capable of cutting and piercing. They can be combined together to form a sort of greatsword/spear hybrid, as the sword's hilt can be extended. Both the sword and shield have vents built into them that allow resonant to coat the blade.

Strengths:
  • Adventurous - Edward comes from a long line of sea-farers, people who built strength and agility out of necessity to survive, and to explore. Adventure is in his blood, and as such he's got a natural propensity for building muscle and stamina.

Weaknesses:
  • Zealot - Edward is very religious, and has a natural distaste for the other two religions in Chroma. He has trouble working with Circle or Omnigaia believers, and will often pick fights with them over the groups treatment of Feren.
  • Poor Leader - Despite being the kind of person to lead the charge, as an actual leader he's very poor. He doesn't think well in terms of team strategy, doesn't offer the best advice, and is liable to break off solo.

Skills:
  • Intermediate Swordsman - Ed is fairly familiar with swords. Not just his own unqiue weapon, but any bladed thing meant to be swung around for self-defense.
  • Beginner Jack of All Trades - There's little Ed hasn't dabbled in, though there's also little he's gotten any real practice in. He has basic knowledge of most hobbies, but nothing worth noting really.
  • Beginner Athlete - Ed is a fit man, used to running, jumping and lifting heavy objects. While not particularly acrobatic, he can definitely outrun the average person in most terrains.

Personality: Ed can be a brash kind of guy. While generally he's not rude or overbearing, he is assertive, confident and can even be a bit aggressive. While he means no harm by it, and often means WELL by it, his younger years of rebellion and rambunctiousness haven't totally exited his system. He's the kind of guy who might punch you in the arm a little too hard, or rush you into a situation you're not comfortable with. But he's also the kind of guy who'd drop what he was doing to help you move, and even try to get others involved, or stand up for you against an authority figure.

While stubborn to a fault, and has trouble asking others for emotional help, he isn't entirely immature. He's good at dealing with loss in a healthy way, and that's actually about the only subject he offers good emotional advice on. He's the kind of person who can't stand being in the same place-- going a long time without change leads him into a depressive and easy to anger state, so he's got a deeply ingrained need to travel, and to try new things. If, for some reason, you're the one offering him to do something dangerous or wacky instead of the other way around, he'll pretty much invariably say yes. Over all, he's a good friend, if you can manage to reign him in when he takes a step too far.

Background: Edward's story starts with his parents, Harold Lachance and his wife Amelia Smith. The two were ardent Children of Gaia, who found each other through the religion and fell in love. For their honeymoon, they made a pilgrimage to an important religious site-- the Korstone, found in Barillia. They sailed from their home of Shindan to Barillia, and though it was a rough journey, it was well worth it. While originally they were enamored with just the Korstone, they found a deep beauty in Barillia and its people. After Ameilia found herself pregnant, the two decided to settle in Korstone.

The child the two had was named Edward, and he was a rambunctious sort. Even at a young age he was active, and ever so slightly rebellious. It did not help that he grew up around Feren-- while he would grow to appreciate the cultural context when he was older, at a young age he was frustrated he didn't have the animal features all of his friends had, and bothered by their questions. After all, no kid likes feeling 'different.' He wasn't even particularly attached to the church, despite most of his friends being from there. However, a string of two events lead him to becoming deeply religious. Firstly, was the time the church helped save his friend Corban from a group of Omnigaia Pact cultists. Soon after that event, Edward's father Harold fell ill, and the church came together to help him, raising funds and going out of their way to try and treat him. While eventually he did pass, it was peaceful and painless, and Edward knew he was indebted to the church, and to the Starmother herself for giving Harold a life he was happy with.

Edward grew up quickly after his father passed, transforming into a fine young man. Where he was once withdrawn, was a want to help others in his community. He never stopped 'adventuring' per say, but now rather than exploration or fun for its own sake, he would gather things for people from more dangerous places. However, despite his transformation, Ed found himself often wanting a bit more. He had explored all of Korstone in his time their, and he wanted to truly get to know the world Gaia had made for him. That was when he decided to join Echo. He could make his community proud by eliminating the Lost, and also explore the world. Despite moving away from his friends and mother, Ed believes he will be much happier traveling and doing good.

Awesome! I'll get to work on a character. As for the Discord, I definitely do want one, not just for ease of communication and the one shots, but because I actually don't use RPG too much and would like reminders of when people have posted ^^
I'm definitely interested in this as well, though I have a few questions about the CS. I'm not sure what 'role' or 'color' mean in it, and I wanted to ask about Font-- would every character need one? Do Hunters/Huntresses almost always have one? Also, it's mentioned Echo is on the cutting edge of tech, so would that mean everyone gets a RWBY-esque technoweapon? Or are we more leaning towards "sword, but its on fire now" for weaponry?

Jude Styles

Jude was no stranger to anxieties. In what little memories remained of their life before reconstruction that was a common emotion. On the battlefield you were always anxious, waiting for plasma and bullets to fly by, the blade of Damocles always hanging over you. But Jude wasn't feeling that sort of anxiety right now. This anxiety was leaning more on the eagerness side than fear. Jude was simply hosing Alan down with extinguisher whilst waiting to grab them, while it felt like the rest of their comrades were doing so much more. Jude didn't spare more than a quick glance in either direction to confirm, but even beyond that just the sound was enough to confirm. Avelyn was relaying the guard's orders back to Maria, who would do so to the entire team, while Tarak and Samuel used that intel to delay the soldiers gunning for the group. And the less said about Nero, the better.

Jude was eager to act, to do something more pivotal than chuck foam at someone. But, having forgone bringing a weapon to the bazaar, felt they could do little else of import. Eventually, the flames died down, even in the riotous noise didn't, and Trajan reached for Alan's still steaming form. Jude followed him, and grabbed Alan's legs as Trajan hoisted him upwards. To Jude, the heat didn't hurt much at all-- an odd blessing of having every patch of open skin replaced with nuts and bolts-- even if it clearly was too hot for Trajan to handle. Jude wanted to put their foot down and say they should carry Alan by themself, but before they could work up the courage, another spanner was thrown into the works of their already terrible day.

The roar of a great beast traveled through the market, from above everyone. Jude let their eyes wander towards the sound, and saw a great dark cloud above them, blotting out the sky, bits and pieces breaking off and coming down to the planet's surface without any force behind them. They carried bizarre creatures with them, holding weapons of bone and demanding death. These were some kind of dark magic, maybe from the bounty hunters Nero mentioned. Either way, the group now had to deal with them along with the military presence.

One goblin, and then another, and another, converged on Alan, Jude and Trajan's position, though due to the way Trajan was facing he could probably only see one. As Trajan drew one of his blades and hoisted Alan onto his shoulder, Jude leapt into action, happy to finally be able to do something. While the first goblin-thing was focusing on Trajan, Jude let go of Alan and ran into a dropkick, snapping the poor creature's neck instantly and leaving it to disintegrate into dust. "Please, let me handle them. Get Alan to the ship!" Jude shouted at Trajan, now sizing up the remaining two beasties. Jude was confident their armored hide would be able to deflect simple bone-made weaponry, and even if they didn't have a weapon, just a hard stick would be enough for things this weak.

With their magnokinesis, Jude ripped a loose metal pole from the scenery, and snapped it in two over their knee. Now armed with two jagged spears, they lunged at the goblins, who obliged the challenge. The three locked blades for a moment, the goblin's weapons cutting more dents into Jude's impromptu weaponry, before they threw the things off. One went too far, so Jude hopped to the other, and drove both of his improvised spears into its chest, destroying its heart and turning it into dust. The other was on them much faster than Jude anticipated, however, and latched onto their neck, trying to drive its knife into where their neck would be.

"Bad idea." Jude mumbled, before leaping up in the air, and back down, right on their back. The goblin, still in the way, had most of its ribs crushed instantly. Jude finished it off quickly, and made to seek out someone else who needed help. They could wait on returning to the ship until everyone else was in a safe spot.

Jude was anxiously receiving instructions, racing with both Ashton and Flame to the source of the flames. They stayed silent, though vigilant, as the rest of the team worked out all of the details. It was, indeed one of their own doing this. Someone had done this on purpose, overloaded one of them with a massive amount of mana to cause this scene, though who or why they would do such a thing would have to be sussed out at a later date. Civilians were in danger, and the Bazaar's security was aiming to put a quick stop to that by gunning down everyone with powers in the immediate area. Luckily Ashton had the foresight to run some damage control with the high-grade extinguishers, or it was a real possibility the entire market could burn down while the security was looking to mete out 'justice.'

Speaking of justice, real justice, Jude arrived on the scene just in time to see Maria, Klein and Alan. Or, it seemed to be Alan, it was hard to tell when he was covered in holy flames as if a mad god was smiting him. At the least Alan was still standing and not a pile of ash, so he was probably still alive, if not possibly in horrible flame. Everyone else began to extinguish the flames coming out of him as Jude observed the situation gingerly. One of the aircraft that should have currently been gunning down everyone in the square was actually jerking and flailing around wildly, presumably due to the influence of one of Jude's allies. That should serve as enough of a distraction for this next part.

The flames seemed to sputter ever so slightly as the foam hit them, sucking the oxygen from the surrounding area and releasing a flash-freezing agent. Or maybe that was Jude's imagination, hoping the magic fire was tamable and killable, so this next part wouldn't be so painful. 'I'm standing by to grab Alan. Let me know when the flames are small enough he won't damage the ship.' Jude projected into the group's mental link. They had taken a plasma shot before, sure. But sustained, magical flames completely enveloping him... there was a possibility they could be cooked alive, their cybernetics becoming a horrifying tomb to boil what remained of their body into a sludge.

'Just... just try and calm down. You've been in plenty of fire fights before. You've risked your life before. If there's anything this body is good for, its not letting you die.' Jude repeated to themselves over and over.

Jude was actually having a fairly pleasant day. Whilst they usually avoided others, and others avoided them, Ashton and Flame operated under no such rudeness. The two wanted to catch up with Jude, since they had not talked in a fair amount of time. Jude was couldn't well turn down the offer, as they were some of the few to engage in pleasantries with Jude, even during everyone's Ascendancy days. Besides, if they loved old Earth music like Jude did, the pair could be kindred spirits. Maybe.

All good things must come to an end, of course. As Ashton and Flame were just beginning to get Jude to open up a tad, some kind of pillar of white flame appeared on the horizon. For a few moments, all Jude could do was stare at it. It was a majestic thing, almost heavenly, really. Awe inspiring, certainly. But then, all great and powerful things were, really. And power was often abused to harm. Jude tuned back into reality just as Ashton explained what exactly was happening. Highly concentrated world magic. Knowing it wasn't the result of a bomb just anyone could use put Jude's mind a little at ease, but people were in danger, so they couldn't calm down. They had to act.

Jude launched into action just as Ashton and Flame did, though Jude's robotic legs carried them farther with each stride. They did not strategize or communicate like Ashton and Flame did-- the Ascendancy built Jude to brutalize, and taught them only as much. However, their robotic muscles could do more good than harm in the right circumstance. Many a time did they use their body to shield a squishy comrade, or lift up debris. Strength like that could be useful if the pillar originated inside of a building, or if there was more to worry about than just a bomb.

Jude wasn't totally tuned out and in their own head, of course. They listened to what Ashton and Flame were doing, and accepted their help in the form of the hoverspeeder. They also replied to Ashton, mentally, even if Jude wasn't a super fan of the bizarre psychic link between the lot of them. 'I can only freeze myself, so I think I'd be best helping citizens...' Jude "said." Unfortunately, it looked like helping in evacuation wasn't really on anyone's mind, least the security of the bazaar, who were currently gunning on arresting what was apparently one of them.

'...Or fending off security. If we could have just one day off...'

Common Inventory

Omni-tool - A bog standard model in poor shape. Not integrated into Jude's cybernetics. Filled to the brim with music.

HF Gun-blade - A katana, with an integrated coil-gun system near the hilt with the barrel running up the blunt edge of the blade. The katana's blade can vibrate at incredibly high frequencies to increase cutting power.

Mono-molecular Whipsword - A second katana, this one made of a special magnetic metal that allows it to split into whip-like segments and extend along a monofilament wire when swung hard enough. All of its edges are honed to a single molecule edge.

Galactic Credits - A few thousand credits, digitally stored.
Spell List

Jude was given fewer spells than a standard marine. In-universe, this was because they spent more time being experimented on and less time practicing their magic than their peers. OOC, this was simply because I felt Jude's stronger robotic body gave them an upperhand that should be given a downside, like fewer spells.

Stasis [Timespace] - For up to five seconds, Jude can freeze their own place in time and space, making them unable to be effected by any kind of force. However, they can not move or sense anything during this time, and it is quite taxing to use more than once in a short span.

Magnokinesis [World] - Jude has the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, most often used in conjunction with their whipblade to make it curve and move in odd ways, confounding opponents. It can be used on any other object, however. There is even enough magnetic material in them that they can fling themself, though it is incredibly tiring and hard to do.

Metal Molding [World] - Jude can make any metal they are currently within a foot of melt into a meldable liquid like mercury without altering its temperature. When in this state it can be manipulated like a tentacle as long as it stays close to Jude in one unbroken mass. Moving too far (or simply stopping the magic) has the metal reharden to its original solidity in whatever shape it was molded into. Like Magnokinesis, Jude can use this on their own metal body, though here it is no more taxing than usual, and is in fact the general way they use this ability.

Death Rattle [Mind] - Jude can let out a horrifying scream. Those with weak wills and low resistance to mind magics can be rendered immediately unconscious by hearing it, but stronger people will simply become light-headed, and feel it become harder to concentrate. The soundwave itself also has some kinetic force behind it, about as much as a strong breeze. This magic skill indiscriminately targets friend and foe.
Character Traits

Robotic Construction - Around 70% of Jude's body has been replaced with cybernetics. All four limbs, the face, a variety of organs and even part of the brain. While they are far hardier and a bit stronger than most sapient creatures without wearing any armor, they need routine recharging in addition to food to make sure they survive, and an EMP would severely hamper their ability to move and function.

Frontliner - Jude is used to putting their life at risk. With a heavily dulled sense of pain and robotic parts improving on their internal biology, they can push themselves harder, and for longer than the unmodified soldier ever could. They're used to wading into the big fights and putting their life in danger for little reason, so more intense missions are not an issue.

Empathetic - Despite their dour, edgy nature, Jude is deeply empathetic to others, able to see where they are coming from and understand why they might take those actions, even if they are unquestionably selfish or evil. They have come to terms with killing as a necessary evil sometimes, however.

-------------------------

Biography: Jude had a profoundly normal life before their transformation, though they don't remember too much of it. They were the child of two loving parents, one of whom worked a simple office job, and the other quit hers to become a full time parent. They were an emotional child, very attached to their parents and slow to make friends, occasionally anxious or mopey. They were overall, a very unimportant person-- not easy to kidnap, not connected to any important families or rebellious parents. The reason for their particular selection was their biology.

Their profound normality extended to their genes as well. They were generic to a tee, and would prove the perfect testing grounds as to the limits of genetic alteration in addition to the Kaisoken dust tests. Jude was never far from at least one of their parents, so the details of how they were kidnapped are sketchy to them, considering what happened next.

Instead of a few experiments followed by a battery of abuse and humiliation, Jude was used over and over again as a lab rat, having limbs and organs exposed to high quantities of Kaisoken dust, Rau've-based drugs, serums and other trials pushing the limits of the scientific process. Often parts of their body would have to be amputated and replaced by cybernetic limbs, or kept in check through careful administration of a constant stream of drugs. Even their mind was fair game, and they've been left with permanent memory problems, unable to remember much of their life before the Star Marines program, or even what their gender was before everything that happened.

It was debated whether Jude would ever even see combat, but the Ascendancy were not one to let things go to waste, and many who worked with Jude were eager to see the robotic monstrosity they became die somewhere other than in front of them. They were given far less time to master their magical skills compared to fellow soldiers, but their metal skin proved a helpful asset, and their cybernetics were modified to become combat ready. They barely interacted with the other children, unsuited to doing so and having an appearance that generally warded off anyone in the mood to talk. They simply 'clocked in and clocked out' of the war, as much as they were able to.

While originally mistaken for some kind of android, Jude was afforded the mercy of the Rau've after their capture like all other Star Marines. They could not accept the Rau've's offer for a 'normal' life, however. All they knew was war, and deep down, they wanted to see their real parents again. They joined Moonstrike at its inception, but their withdrawn and flighty nature has meant they haven't seen many missions yet.
