The primal urge to obsessively access your uni portal to see if your classes have been released, so you can read the syllabi thirty-seven times before class next week.

Ezekiel startled when Hercules pulled him in for a side hug. He looked up at the mythological creature before he chuckled and smiled. ”Hey, Herc.” When Leda had initially insisted on saving the cyclops, Zeke had been against it. Diaper duty was a nightmare until they got the baby back to Camp-Half Blood. Then Zeke learned of Leda’s passing, of being trapped, and suddenly Hercules wasn’t so bad. He was a reminder of Leda. After all, she named him. It was like having a piece of her still around, and well, Hercules had grown quickly and was quite helpful around camp.

Ezekiel winced when Niah overheard and shut Demi down, with a resounding “no” from Nancy. Ezekiel swallowed and rubbed the back of his neck before he looked at Demi. The guilt showed plainly on Zeke's face while he looked at his boyfriend. He didn't want to choose, especially with Alexios sinking his hooks into Demetri more and more. Speaking of the self-righteous prick, Alexios instantly injected himself into the task of escorting Leandra to the border. Zeke glowered at the party god, wanting nothing more than to punch him in the face again. Why would a god be anything but self-important, throwing himself where he wasn’t wanted or needed. And then Nancy rejected Zeke.

His heart plummeted into his stomach, Zeke’s focus shifting back to his half-sister. Zeke had been walking on eggshells for weeks, months, in an effort to support Nancy without smothering her, and now she was dismissing him. It was worse than falling from the climbing wall after being knocked out.

Zeke stood there for a moment while he watched Nancy lead the group. The keychain in his pocket felt like a weight. He looked back at Demetri, a pained expression on his face.

”D, I….I’m sorry.” Zeke swiftly kissed Demetri on the lips before he dashed after Nancy. He couldn’t help but feel he had just made a choice that would dictate his future.

Zeke brought up the rear of the group, keeping a few paces back so as not to interfere. He had wanted to see this through for his sister and for himself a little bit, but he couldn’t help his feeling of guilt from leaving Demi behind. Again.

Raúl looked at the woman curiously, wondering what could possibly attract her to a crime scene. Of course, the new things these days seemed to be those true crime podcasts. Perhaps she was another avid listener.

”I’m afraid I can’t disclose that sort of information to the public.” Raúl had glanced back at the crime scene while he spoke. He looked back at Amara now and gave her a tight-lipped smile. ”Do you live near here? It would be better if you weren’t alone and headed home.”

”Well, ya. If you had a girlfriend as hot as mine, I'm positive that would always be on your mind as well,” he declared.

Avery brushed a kiss along the back of Kimiko's neck before he yawned. He sighed and tucked her head under his chin.

”I feel like I could sleep for two days,” he mumbled.

Caden's hand tightened around Nero's when he saw the concern flit across their face. He wanted to stop, to pull Nero in and bury his face into their neck. Caden took a step closer to Nero, reading to react to the teasing and the concern when the sounds of mewing pulled him back.

Caden looked down as the cats wound themselves around their legs. Caden chuckled and knelt down, his hand still grasping Nero's securely.

”Do you think they'll sleep with us tonight? Or terrorize the house?” he asked absentmindedly. Caden scratched and petted both of them before he looked up at Nero.

Raúl's eyes scanned over the crime scene. There had been no signs of a struggle and a witness claimed the victim was walking before they suddenly dropped. There was no reason not to believe the witness, but when Raúl had arrived on scene he had scented the area. There was no other scent around the witch but there was something strange about their scent.

As his eyes took in everything once more, they landed on a blonde woman who was watching him. She had no interest in the other police officers or reporters fighting for attention and answers. Raúl missed the days where cell phones could only be used in certain places because there were only a few towers that could transfer signals.

Raúl walked over to the woman who stood on the other side of the police line. His eyes roamed her, taking his measure of her. There was something other about this woman as well. Perhaps a witch as well.

”Good evening, miss. I'm certain you will hear all about this on the news. Perhaps you should move on.” His tone was even, but it didn't leave much room for negotiation.

Ezekiel nodded and patted his pockets. The comforting pressure of his keychain reminded him that he had his sword on him should he need it. Once Nancy turned to look at Leandra, Zeke moved forward and stepped out of the tent. He glanced around, making sure no one was loitering, when he spotted Demetri with Alexios.

Seeing the god annoyed Zeke, but seeing Demi made Zeke smile. He wasn’t expecting to see Demi until after; it was a pleasant surprise. Ezekiel glanced back before he walked forward, closing the distance between him and Demetri. As he walked, he searched his boyfriend’s face, searching for distress or annoyance from the god hanging around.

”Hey,” he said, once he was close. ”I’m helping Nanc escort Leandra to the border, after that, I’ll be free,” he added. Ezekiel kept his eyes trained on Demetri, although the urge to glare at Alexios was strong.

The weather in Chicago left much to desire. The wind blew across the waterway, increasing the humidity until the wind left a permanent chill within the body. Raúl pulled his jacket in tighter as he stood next to a white sheet that lay on the ground. It was strange, the use of white to cover a dead body. Raúl wondered if it originated from Asian funeral rites.

Regardless of where it came from, the white sheet currently covered a body. Raúl managed to gain access to the crime scene thanks to his ID, which declared him as law enforcement from Spain. Although, the term law enforcement was a stretch. Raúl was more of a bounty hunter for the supernatural community.

Raúl crouched down and lifted the sheet. The witch simply looked like they were asleep. Their face was unblemished, and the face lay free from stress or wrinkles. However, the lack of a heartbeat and breathing pattern was enough reason to know the witch was quite dead. Not to mention the blue colouring around their lips to indicate the cold.

Raúl ran his hand across his face, rubbing his moustache before he set the sheet back down and stood. Something was off. It was the only reason why he had been called in. But what had happened,d and who did it? Those were the questions Raúl needed to answer before more witches died.

Cassiopeia watched Nic as he hopped around, while removing his clothing. She imagined a bird hopping around to gather food and couldn’t help the giggle that bubbled to the surface. She buried her head into the pillow just as Nic collapsed onto the bed. Her giggling continued when Nic pulled her in close before burying his face into her head. Cassi’s tired giggling subsided, and she sighed. She wrapped a hand around Nic’s, holding it securely in hers while they cuddled in the bed.

Cassi yawned and stretched before she felt more relaxed. She shut her eyes, mumbling an affirmation to Nic’s statement before she followed up with a mumbled goodnight in Mandarin. The warm embrace of Nic’s arms and the bed's comfort allowed Cassi to fall asleep quickly.

The grin that formed from Kimiko clinging to Avery was effortless. It reinforced the idea that he was who she sought after when afraid—even though Avery was currently responsible for her slight fear. Once he deposited her onto the bed, Avery could see Kimiko hadn’t truly minded how Avery had picked her up without warning.

His eyes danced, mirroring the look in Kimiko’s eyes as she tried to keep the silent smirk from them. He barked a laugh at her next statement, surprising himself with how freely he laughed despite the intense emotion that had settled in the house.

”I'm always thinking about that, my dear, but I confess I am in favour of sleep as well.” Avery removed his sweater, revealing that he wore nothing underneath, then removed his joggers. He crawled onto the bed clad only in his briefs, and wrapped an arm around Kimiko’s waist. Avery kissed the side of her head before he laid down with her as his hostage. He breathed in the comforting scent of her: fire, honey, pine, and whatever soap she used.

”I mean, unless you are thinking about it, too…” Avery grumbled, his whispered words gently brushing across Kimiko’s neck.

A myriad of emotions still rode on the surface, slowly eroding away the little control Caden had regained. Although he was drained from staying in that iridium-filled cell all night, the urge to protect those he claimed as his was strong. That urge only seemed to grow as Nero approached Caden.

The dragon suddenly felt like a caged animal, and he debated bolting from Nero until he was worthy of being in the imp’s presence again when Nero simply took Caden’s hand and led him inside their home. The fire drained from Caden’s eyes instantly, and he obediently followed Nero.

Once the door to the house was shut and locked, that urge to avenge and protect quietened. Everyone he cared for currently resided within his home, safer than any of them could be if they remained in their own homes. Caden shut his eyes, trusting the direction of his imp, and breathed in slowly as he grounded himself.

After Caden reopened his eyes, that familiar confidence and mischievous glimmer that Nero seemed to bring out in him returned. Of course, there was a lingering exhaustion there, mixed with worry for the stress Caden had brought to Nero.

You look like shit by the way… Nero’s words brought a faint smile to his face. Caden dropped his eyes to look at their joined hands.

”Spending the night in a cell full of iridium does that. Not that I didn’t deserve it,” he said, looking back at Nero in the hopes that his imp would have some sort of righteous comeback. Caden knew it was the least he deserved. Between hurting Cass and Nero, Caden was certain he was in for years of repentance—if any could be achieved.
