Momo’s hair was blown around her face by the wind coming through the car’s window. She clutched her acceptance letter as if it might have been blown away. She read through it for probably the hundredth time, staring holes into the paper through the eye-holes of her mask. A chirp by her ear took her out of her mind. One of her rats, Coco, was vying for her attention. Momo held her hand up for the rat to climb on, and petted her head. Coco happily nuzzled into the touch, as her sister Chanel napped on Momo’s other shoulder.
“Looks like we’re getting pretty close.”Momo looked up at her sister.
Tsuya had agreed to take her to the meeting place, as their parents and oldest sister Inari had an important reception to attend. They had felt terribly about not being able to see Momo off, but there wasn’t much they could do.
Thinking about the school and her future, Momo felt a pit in her stomach.
“You nervous?”Tsuya was smiling at her.
“Who, me? No way!” Momo was lying through her teeth, but she hoped Tsuya wouldn’t notice.
As the car pulled up to the field, Momo saw a group of other people, who she assumed would be her classmates. Tsuya parked the car and helped Momo get her suitcase out of the trunk. The sisters shared a long hug and parted ways.
“Make sure to call when you’re settled in, okay?”“Of course!”Once Tsuya had driven away, Momo looked at the crowd. She figured she might as well make a good first impression. She placed the rats in the pockets of her overalls and pulled her melodica out of her backpack. She lifted her mask enough to put the mouthpiece in her mouth and leisurely strolled towards the others, playing a
song.
