Bio

I am an old roleplayer from the days of Dial-up where everyone went home to roleplay anime adventures after watching their afternoon toonami run, and probably older than that. I started around the late 90s distinctively because I recall playing Final Doom and Metal Gear Solid while trolling Compuserve chat rooms and roleplaying so maybe a year before 99 or 98 generously? Speaking of Compuserve.

After the amount of FUN I had in AOL I switched ISPs because AOL sucked in terms of service. I got to taste blood in PVP beyond the scope of what I already obtained in AOL.. my own blood. I saw the contrast between different fighting styles and fell in love with such an idea of an infinite universe of roleplay fighting, but not before my bewildering OTK. AOL had its great fighting talent, but Compuserve's original Zones pvp was a different beast entirely. There was no rhyme or reason. There was only fighting and permanent (almost) killing. People spent days researching frivolous AskJeeve science articles, obscure words, not-established supernatural theories, actual unproven theories, and overall cheapness to kill other players. I changed. I went from barely spelling to spelling decently. I vested time in the ability to put my wit against the locals on a daily basis and the excitement of dueling, raids, or simple death matches.

Then I forgot there was an entire universe, and fell in love all over again. I lost internet but gained determination. I'd discover free-form roleplaying on RPGchat back in 2003 and changed once again. I was introduced to a more laid back but sensible scale of power-efficiency. These people were more concerned about player positioning and simplicity than abstract and absurd metaphysics, and though Compuserve's meta had remain true to function it didn't offer the tone to level down a bit to something comprehensible. Scale the pointless and streamline your idea. The universe was a big place for me and I think that excited me more. My ambition for battle and war matched now a bigger scale and I would fight randoms all over to just prepare for it. RPGchat was good for one specific thing and that's style in writing. Forum based roleplaying focused specifically on how well you actually wrote circa 2004 and up, and my propensity for verbosity had to adjust. Transitioning is a term I'd use but you'd think I was talking about an operation.

2005 got my net back and suddenly my 3 to 4 paragraph barely able to post a day became a tremendous 7 paragraph and up epic for a specific fight because I. Love. This. So. Much. Ask Reno. My fight bout back into the game was by-far the most intense nights of my career because I was active, fierce, and finally took in everything I've learned. My character then is my main now. Jhieten represents that drive and dedication I put in from hours of even attempting to get one hour of net in a forum that demanded a decent level of quality in modern-fantasy clan feuding. An addiction is one that requires a fix from a fiend. You can't fix passion. I OTK'd Murrocko something nasty he never recovered from. I wonder till this day if he still thinks about that. Reno's proposal to go around wrecking shit titillated me more than the act itself. I think that's what makes me fight PVP. The idea of just fighting and killing itself is much more exciting and keeps me focused; however, let's ignore the paranoia some of my Ls awarded me. No one talks about their defeats. Shhhh.

2005 is my best year. Fighting here. Killing there. Being apart of a big clan and being its main big bad enforcer guy. I messed it up introducing Delve to Reno and had to kill the operation. I lament that still. Poor Reno. He was in the way of our cross-fire. Fellow zoner rivalry has its casualties I'm afraid, but it isn't like I didn't suffer. I became a moderator on Animeleague. That's pain. I became a new moderator for a new clan nation section thanks to Rita and... yeah, Delve; unfortunately, that was short lived because of a combination of both roleplay shenanigans and personal issues that were concurrent and intertwined. I broke my own separation of business and personal. We all learn the hard way. Back to RPGchat.

2006 is a year I don't like talking about. Let's talk about 2007. I did absolutely nothing of value on RPGchat because I got a little too caught up in making trouble ooc, arguments, and playing DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. Sorry Ru; however, this is the year that changed everything. TheZones Duel League. A tournament I made to just run a tournament on a forum no one cares about but me. I modeled the damn thing out of my love of Compuserve's zones which precipitated my penchant for unwarranted violence and murder. Compuserve no longer had its actual players in it so it's time to reinvent the wheel -- make it better. What a year to learn that players will cheat to win and cause drama. Taste of my own medicine (except the cheating part). TZDL2007 didn't change how I viewed the game anymore than just restructuring the definitions of rules and being more concrete; by the way, changes that are huge are usually subtle and slow. I say that unironically.

2009 though. I got Paradox, Ru came around, Argryia... what a player. Basically I got some veterans I knew from AOL and one from MSN (Mystic). Decoy got training to get into Vertex (we were going to crash RPGchat) and ran another fun tournament. This was a bit different though. I got to see Ares get completely crushed by Ru. Holy hell I didn't know she can play that way. Oh snap Argryia is actually pre -- THE $%#@ IS STRING META?! WHAT?! So that can be done.. I always wondered that. Huh.. guess Mystic couldn't handle that. Poor guy. Paradox why did you even use an EMP bomb that early? Now I have to call Meta-game. Everyone seemed to LOVE the definition list though. I learned that I've acquired a new talent and love for the game that transcended even violence itself. I discovered there's order in what people believed is chaos, and they didn't know because these phenomenons didn't have definitions. They were never invoked by name but by action. Man this universe gets bigger the smaller an object actually is. Then TZDL2011 hit and blew everything away. There's a demand.

At first people just like the definition list and some sites asked to borrow it. Ok cool, but now they are asking me to write more. They want to know these terminologies. There's a name for occurrences. I overhauled my baby, made live-streams, podcast interviews, and general fun asshattery in our ooc or phone conferences. I got to meet the wonderful people of ZEJ (once was called CoU) and that's how I got acquainted with Keileon (known as Jason at the time). Draven finally joined. Argryia and Ru is there and the first clan rivalry between the AoA and.. Vertex? Well can't really have a clan rivalry in a tournament that has people representing themselves but Lokanas sure believed he'd beat Argryia. I warned him not to underestimate her cause she's a girl. I know he thinks I fucked him over but that OTK is now legacy to a player who became the literal embodiment of top tier play at the time. She'll thank him moreso than insult the guy, but I'm sure his scorn is much more lethal. TZDL2011 was the height of some of the ooc memes and fun but I learned a lot about being a judge and running an event, a community, and myself. I've learned to calm down. I want my players, assets, to have fun. They like the balance, meta, and information. I will give them even more next time. They'd have to just wait 8 months for a semi-finals round... oops. $#@! Skypark.

TZDL2012 is when I learned the meta from a much more bigger picture and every year since my understanding grew. I became content in watching my players compete and perform to expected levels though Argryia just kept growing. Really. I got to see Paradox and Seth Mayvus come around, Draven compete, Keileon compete, Goliath debuts, Ru come back, and Argryia showing everyone she is a legitimately good player. I was not defanged -- quite the opposite. I realized my fangs needed sharpening, but it isn't your bite that's lethal. It's the force. What I saw there changed everything and it all came together again.. until certain shit happened but we'll just not bring it up. Sorry Seth and Paradox because your match suffered because of it.

From there on my love for exploration overcame the game itself.. by exploring the game itself.
vertex.wikia.com/wiki/Home_Page

Instead I invested my time understanding concepts, tactics, theories, and even functions of the game I thought I knew and I kind of actually did. That's not the thing that surprised me. What surprised me is that EVERYONE already knows.. they just don't know they are invoking these concepts, at least not by name or a uniformed jargon.. maybe lexicon? I'm not in the mood to synonym this. From here on I am much more interested in seeing new applications of the meta or how it's used rather than beating someone up.. but that's because I want to see order and structure to some degree. Prometheus Project. Not related to NASA. Dabo Ignem. I'll be punished accordingly, but first the mission. I dedicate a lot of my brain power into roleplaying and not just going in a thread and pretending to be a weeb because that doesn't interest me.. not in the conventional way. It's full-circle here. The competitive streak of the original zones and the free-form liberty of 2005 where RPGchat's c/g and Animeleague's.. CN? I don't know. Whatever. Anyway the free-form thing. Yeah. That. Bring back a time of roleplay where pvp was fun as much as it was deviously competitive, but this time with some uniformity and some structure. Definitely NO POLITICS.. unless IC where most people's attention SHOULD BE AT!

tl;dr, the gist of my concerns is that with the all-inclusiveness presented in the schedule system, one would have to be equally all-inclusive with their defensive capability, lest they want to be steamrolled out the gates by an un-reactable attack that they didn't have the appropriate innate defense against.

That is the nature of roleplaying combat from the get-go. You aren't really allowed the ability to counter everything without someone calling you a godmodder/powergamer nor should you know everything that is coming to you from your opponent or you're a metagamer. That's specifically how this game was designed outside of a few places or a power-scale set.

Ironically, this means that while one is free from the pressure of rigidly defined character regulations, it is merely exchanged for the ambigious, unpredictable threat of their opposition's capabilities - which also carries the rather severe reprecussion of competetive unviability should the player fail to take everything into account.

Yeah that's called disparity and it has existed since I started this. I wouldn't exactly say ambiguous though unless you mean random chance of encountering a hazard you aren't/can't prepare for. You can't account for everything otherwise you wouldn't be entirely competitive nor viable. The scheduling system actually supplants the original b/r because there was a metric ton of rules, bans, and regulations that sandbag anything not gunner/rush.

I strongly belive that the competition should be focused within the fight itself, without being defined to such a great degree by the character matchup itself, especially in a competetive enviroment. Nobody should be thrown into an immediately uphill battle when participating in a tournament.

What does any of that actually mean?

EDIT: i don't mean to say that every possible attack should be capable of being dodged or blocked by a baseline, minimally versatile character of the appropriate tier; but i do insist that the exception to the rule should be in the minority and have appropriately weighed damage or effects.

Essentially that's what you said above. In fact, this system encourages more versatility than the current because dimensional powers, a former banned power, can resurface. I don't truly get what you mean since your premise is contradicting itself. Can you clarify?

UPDATE IMPORTANT READ NOW!

I spoke to some of the players and they voted to move the Preliminaries to MAY 1st. So the sign ups will be extended for 2 weeks.. which is good for me!
You're offering real money for a roleplay tournament? The salt levels will be off the damn chain. With that in mind, they say never turn a hobby into a job, so I won't be participating, but best of luck.

Not a job it's a tournament and if anything I'd be doing the lionshare of the work. All you have to do is play, but sure.

I have to ask though, what exactly is your definition of high tier? Reading through one of your template characters they seem to have the capacity to fire scaled up lightning bolts, both faster and presumably hotter than an actual lightning bolt in nature. Such an attack is, to my understanding, basically going to auto-connect on any character slower than the speed of light, which seems to stray out of what is commonly known as 'high tier'.

Electricity is a schedule 3 because there are forces within nature or in some of the other profiles that could manage it, but the conditions necessary to actively counter it is impractical and you'd be right; however, high tier amps up the levels of every ability a character has to a degree in where electricity, even to the magnitude of Mitsu, is not only manageable but may actually be somewhat negligible unless he revved it up to their pace. Mitsu is an incredibly strong character, but there are strategies to protect yourself against projectiles that some of us in TZDL already have

vertex.wikia.com/wiki/Auto-Defense

All things considered: even without crimson lightning, electricity is fast and strong enough to be considered "high tier" but it isn't. Argryia's Serenity Redstar had no problems with Mouse's Mitsu Mazono in their exhibition in 2009 and in their quarterfinal match in TZDL2011. I defeated Mitsu Mazono in an exhibition match in 2013 and my character's attacks aren't close to the speed electricity moves. Electricity, by itself, has some gnarly properties and banning it outright isn't exactly fair and would hurt the actual diversity I went for when I made the scheduling system (which got a lot of powers and meta unbanned or deregulated significantly). Roleplaying offers an abundance dimension of craziness you can muster. Mitsu was posted because he represented the power aspect.

Unrelated but who here rather I move the prelim date to May 1st?

@Devil

I can't decline an invitation. Sounds like quite the event!

That's excellent to read. You were one of the very few I want to see enter this year. Since you are the resident champion I am looking forward to your performance in particular.

Also for you and everyone else.. going to shameless spam this discord where you can discuss with us directly (myself, Shadow, and the other participants of TZDL)

discord.gg/U9aYrsz

It'd make my job a lot easier if we can negotiate the rules. I want this tournament to be as good as it is fun. Heavy meta discussions and yu gi oh nonsense is usually brought up. This is also good for those wanting to be a judge since constant communication is paramount.
The position for the 2nd judge has been taken by Shadow27 from a third party community. Anyone interested can still submit their application for judging, but you cannot compete if you are a judge.
Hello, Hey, Hi.

I'm new AF to the arena and this T1 system, how much of a problem would that be if I wanted to enter? Of course I'd read and all of that if I enter (and I guess even if I don't) but just know that I don't know stuff, could I still apply?

It's an open invitation to all as described in the original post.
Hello members of RPGuild arena. I've been lurking around for a bit and noticed you guys have a problem with keeping a tournament alive.. or having a good one at all. Don't worry we both need a tournament in our lives, but this time I got one for you!

TZDL2017

TZDL2017! TheZones Duel League is a tournamnent event that happens every year.. every other year, and then had a hietus for 5 years but now we're back. This time we are going to have it YOUR OWN ARENA! I decided it was a good idea to bring in the talent of TheZones Duel League into this site because we both need this. We both need a tournament! This isn't site vs site promotional event, but a cross-site promotional event! All participating parties enter on equal footing into the single elimination tournament using a new form of rules for TZDL. I am sure the likes of [@Doc Docter] can appreciate a tournament with some decent talent; likewise, we wanna see what you guys can do too.

To sum it up! This is a T1 or PbP tournament. The winner of the tournament will recieve 1000USD that's One-Thousand Dollars USD that's real money from my paypal account. Don't worry 1k isn't a whole lot to me, but it is TO YOU! Below is a draft I made in Notepad++ containing the rules and information you need to be interested in it, and if you have questions of any kind that is what our discord or this thread is for! This is a draft though. The final product will be a lot better. Trust me. Oh allow me to introduce to you. I am Mobius.

This is a rough draft of TZDL2017 in celebration of our 10 year anniversary. This year we'll have another single elimination tournament to determine not only this year's champion, but the champion for the invitational event for TZDL2017 Winter Season and onward. This is an open invitation to anyone interested in participating especially inside and outside of RPGuild. This year's single elimination tournament will have a cash prize for the winner of the tournament at One-Thousand Dollars or 1000USD directly from my Paypal and an invite into the paid Winter Event season. The 2nd runner up will receive an invitation to the paid Winter Season along the first prize winner. The brackets will be generated by challonge.com/tournament/bracket_gener.. during a livestream showing that will feature anyone who wishes to participate to commemorate this event. The date of this will be announced sometime in the very near future.

Formats of the fight will be the try and trued T1 based combat style or Play-By Post (Pbp). Each player will have a turn to enact desired actions in play. The specific rules of TZDL for turn-order is that the first player to post their intro post is the first player to attack and is thus assigned the Player1 status; otherwise, the second player to post their introduction will be assigned as Player2 and can only attack after Player1. Should Player1 not attack in their 2nd post in the fight then Player2 is permitted to attack. The nature of the attack notwithstanding.

The tournament will be a single elimination. A player will submit one character for the tournament and must win a round to advance. Each character will be placed in the same arena or map of those in the same round. Example: All matches in the preliminaries are in the same field or map in different threads with no chronology between them. Each round will be a different map with different features, geometry, topography, and gimmicks. There will be NO loser brackets what so ever. You win a match by either killing your opponent's character, Knockout, or Disqualification. None of the matches will be considered canon to your character(s) unless both parties agree to it. Fights involving a canonical spin may have their characters know each other by name and maybe an indication of their reputation and abilities but nothing beyond surface knowledge.

The matches will be actively judged by 3 judges. The first and primary judge is Mobius or Devil on RPGuild but the other 2 will be announced later. For this event I will need 1 judge outside of TZDL who is qualified of interpreting information and roleplaying combat and may succumb to a screening to determine their eligibility. The 2nd judge will be someone I elect who may have TZDL experience or a qualified third party not associated with Thezones or TZDL (for impartiality). The judges will screen each match at any given time in any particular way. That means you will have 3 active judges watching one match in particular.

A match ends upon the defeat of an opponent when they can no longer fight (Death or KO). Players may "claim" a hit of varying severity if they deem an opponent made a critical mistake and appeal to all the judges for an inquiry, but confirmed hit(s) may be ruled if a critical discrepancy occurs that none of the parties discerned. Hits may also be used as penalties for availability infractions(See more about Availabilities).

---------------------- TZDL2017 Combat Rules Section 3 Scheduling -------------------------

TZDL2017 introduces a new Power Scheduling system to determine the legality of a power and ability by its measure of potency. It's encouraged that all powers and abilities have working mechanics that its user is beholden by. Special abilities and powers must operate with mechanism in mind that an operator of such a power must be held to and that implies its very weaknesses. The scheduling system determines the overall rank of a particular ability as is and what was described by the player. The order of the scheduling tiers will be descending where 5 is absolutely allowed and 1 being inapplicable. The greater potency a power or ability has the higher the chance it may ascend to a greater rank on the schedule. To clarify: Schedule 1 abilities/powers/attacks/defenses/evasions are forbidden whereas small instances of Schedule 2 may be permissible. The following will elaborate on the qualification of a schedule to best determine where something may fall into:

The rating of a power or ability is based on whether it can be evaded, blocked, and attack(ed) versus how fast, strong, or reach it may be. The schedule system does not adhere to mismatch disparities between characters in the tournament, but what can theoretically oppose a feat despite the entrants of TZDL; If a fire character enters a tournament where the signups are a majority of water users than the rules will not acclimate nor accommodate. A character is not judged completely by how many schedule abilities they have but rather each ability is measured. It is encouraged that a player describes facets of their character in detail with much thought as TZDL does not cover gross ambiguity.

----------------- Profile Sheets/Builds -------------------

Profile sheets should be made either around TZDL's scheduling system with B/R in mind or close to it and you cannot be permitted to enter TZDL without an approved profile sheet. A profile sheet must state all basic information of your character including their appearance, powers, abilities, weaponry, and miscellaneous. A template of a profile sheet:

Player Name:
Availability:
Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Race:
Appearance:
Weapons or items
Abilities:
(Optional)Backstory:

You do not have to follow this specific formula, but understand that your profile sheet must cover ALL intricate information of your character especially their abilities from physical to supernatural. You cannot use a power or ability if it not implied or stated in your profile sheet, and ambiguity will either result in either an edit, rejection, or penalty (default value). Please keep your build in mind and remember: your character can't do everything. All profile sheets will be submitted in a designated thread for the public to see and will be examined by all 3 judges.

------------------ Availabilities ------------------------

Availabilities is a mechanic introduced in TZDL2012 to supplant traditional waiting periods for players to post. Availabilites are submitted with your profile sheet at the top and should include the days of the week you are available to post and at what times of the day. Here is how your availability should look like, and with respect to your Timezone

Players MUST update their availabilities every week for any changes. A player can be award a pardon for real-life circumstance but not out of habit. When both players availability in a match overlay means both are not only available to post but do so frequently if applicable. Chronic lateness will result in an infraction. When a player advances to the next round they must submit an update of their availability, but players eliminated from the tournament do not have to (duh).

Light Manipulation

Teleportation

Can you expound on these for clarity. What do you mean by telepathy being forbidden. Do you imply telepathic communication or reading minds? Light manipulation as in its speed or its luminescence?

<
You don't remove things altogether from characters if you can help it. That's a part of her identity, of who she is as Feigh'Druma. You wouldn't take Lara Croft's ability to shoot, but if the story or fight scene required her to be unable to shoot for impact or storyline reasons you can always ensure that she lost the guns somewhere along the way before the melee started off.

Yes you can. You select the highlighted text and press backspace or delete for the sign up of a tournament you are participating. If a character has an ability that may conflict with the balance of the game, or in violation of a tournament then you can easily remove it or use another character if it is THAT difficult. I doubt there was much effort crafting that ability since it's about 2 paragraphs large under minimum requirements so don't conflate identity politics with roleplaying combat.

@Devil, while I appreciate the suggestion, I have no intention of removing anything I have taken the time to craft on Aleigha. As I pointed out in my reply back to @Nafear, I enjoy the aesthetic of this character, and the power in question applies to that aesthetic just as much as anything else on the character sheet.

It isn't an aesthetic. It's a function. Don't attempt to obfuscate an issue with misuse of jargon.

You are by all rights within you right to feel that way. I have seen those instances myself... Even fallen victim to them. Regardless, I am always of the opinion to trust first that whoever I am pitted against will act within the realm of fairness and reason

Much like Doctor: you aren't convincing me of anything with your buzzwords of "fairness" if you, yourself, were the victim of the very meta-game I brought up concerns with. So your argument boils down to "It's ok when I do it."
