Tears began swelling in Suzi's eyes as she tried her hardest not to panic. Her front teeth continued nibbling on her bottom lip, and through the chaotic thoughts, she did not notice the bruising, she was starting to give them. The young girl drew in several large, spaced and synchronized breaths as she tried to calm herself. However, the breaths seemed more like holds than anything else.

In the middle of her exercise, everything went still for a moment. Suzi let out a large breath into the silence. The digital screen caught her attention more than anything else. Its shift in lighting pulled at her. There was a white egg! And... it hatched!

A little white creature with large, curious, black eyes began moving around the hologram. A small curve on its mouth looked like a smile, such as that of a rabbit of some sort. Its markings reminded her of a snow rabbit. However, the creature looked to be some sort of small demon. It seemed to be translucent as opposed to white, but the hologram made the distinction hard to decipher.

For a second, Suzi hesitated with confusion. Her mind was drawing blanks, "..." she raised her wrist slightly, "I... I know you..." She tried to sound happy, as she carefully wiped her eyes. They were trapped in a video game, weren't they? Digimon was never this scary, and she wanted to believe that whatever happened was nothing to worry about.

Why couldn't they just enjoy the moment for a while? The thought repeated several time in Suzi's head as she watched the shadow hands and the hard hats and the digital nonsense interrupt their dead end conversation. It hurt her ears and made her lift her hands to her head. She felt significantly smaller all of a sudden as the world opened new dimensions and stole people through thin air. Suzi understood full well she was afraid.

Why couldn't they just enjoy the moment for a while?

"Are w-we..." going to die?

She did not dare finish her sentence. It was too negative, and she could not trust the other two with her thoughts. It was impolite and would make the situation worse. There was no evidence, anyone had died, yet. They simply disappeared.

Suzi was nursing her bottom lip, now, trying to prepare for whatever was about to happen to her. Her attention grasped at Aki and Enma. Both were acting more than stirred, and she was afraid to use them as models on how to properly react. She was frightened, but still, she wanted to do the right thing. She did not want to add to the frustrating confusion, especially being the youngest of the group. She felt an urge to prove herself worthy in fear of being detached from them.

Why couldn't they just enjoy the moment for a while?

A bulky dark gray jacket dusted by wear and tear. It covers her body like a cloak and has saved her from a knife fight more than once or twice. It was given to her by her uncle. In fact, it was his until the day he died. It has heavy cuffs and sturdy pockets for tough play. She has never had to replace a button it, and more than likely, it will outlive her, like it did its previous owner.

Beneath her jacket is a neutral colored shirt. It blends into the earth and does not cling to her body, like the rest of her clothes. Often, she is mistaken for a man or a teenage boy, as she does not allow her femininity to shine, as she sees it as a severe weakness.

Freya usually wears a pair of dark trousers. The knees are roughed and patched and the material is heavy duty. They have various forms of pockets, with useful gadgets and weaponry inside of them. A belt holds them together amongst other things like her favorite knife. Slung around her torso is her chest holster. It carries her handy-dandy mighty gun. She never goes anywhere without it. It's saved her more times than she can remember, and Freya has a long, sharp memory, which has made her quick knife particularly jealous.

Her boots are clunky, but they are ready to endure any terrain and keep her feet and lower calves from getting hurt. It takes extra muscle to maneuver in them, but the outcome is far more pristine. Inside her right boot, she carries a dagger for convenience sake.

Last but not least, Freya has an eyepatch over her left eye. She lost her eye in an explosion when she was only three years of age. The incident earned her the endearing nickname of "Patch." Due to the lifelong tragedy, she has little to no recollection of what it was like to use two eyes and has adjusted accordingly. Her remaining eye is like that of a hawk, to many other's surprising dismay. (And, if need be, she could make a bullseye with her eyes closed.)

Kill or be killed. Always shoot first. Never aim a gun at anything not intended to be destroyed. To be blunt, Freya is serious and stoic. Although, she has a sense of humor, it is not for the faint of heart. Paint it black and keep it as macabre as real life is. Freya prefers not to sugar coat her words in a world with no remorse. There is little room for mistake, and she has scars to prove it.

Underneath her thick skin, there are a few tokens of trust. She invests them sparingly. In the meantime, Freya keeps a sharp eye on her surroundings. Any loss is a waste of life, and she would prefer to keep her neck alive, which means if she is going out on a limb for anyone, they more than earned her loyalty. They earned her life, which is the most important asset she owns. Without it, she is nothing.

Freya likes to believe she is not a fearful animal, but if she was to be honest with herself, she would have to say her fear of death drives her wit. It pushes her past her limits. It’s her reason for appreciating life. In a world ruled by darkness, there is no falling into despair or regret. If the opposite of death is life, then by all means, Freya wants whatever it is that she has to endure to be alive.

Currently, Freya resides on the outskirts of society, making continual contact with several trusted allies. Most of them are people who knew her uncle. However, she has managed to create her own personal network. She hunts game and men alike, looking out for her own skin rather than anyone else's. The more the merrier never settled well with her. Even those she refers to as family, she keeps an arm's distance, hardwired for survival rather than cohabitating with anyone else. However, recently, she has seen a need to change. Living alone has its perks, but there is a reason her uncle remained loyal to a group of people and did not settle on his own. Slowly Freya is realizing she needs to make the same choice.

Suzi's gaze looked over Enma. Her brown eyes adjusted to the young man before she opened her mouth and began to speak, completely forgoing manners and introducing herself. "We're... well," she shifted her attention to Aki and then back to Enma. For some reason, she had expected Aki to respond for the two of them. It seemed simple enough that her senior would do so, except the older girl seemed less qualified than anything she had expected. The situation was confusing. "We think we might be trapped in a video game.... or something," she relented, unable to speak further on the conclusion of their conversation. "We... or I was hoping someone else might know what's happening." Her eyes looked downward, "But, I guess not..."

There had to be an explanation for this. Granted, she was used to some things being perpetual mysteries -- like the Church. But still, this situation warranted an explanation. She knew there had to be one, even if no one in her immediate surroundings had any true ideas.

Her toes wiggled in her shoes for a brief second as she regained momentum. The area around them was so vast, and she wanted to push all her worries aside and explore the place. The childish part of her was yearning to forget any responsibilities about her whereabouts or her desires to be with her family. Suki wished to believe, everything was okay. Why couldn't they just enjoy the moment for a while?

A spoken word or form of words held to have magic power. The language of spells is sometimes archaic and is not always understood by the reciter. In some cases meaningless but familiar terms are believed to be efficacious because of their traditional value. Much magical language, however, is clearly and directly correlated with the aim of the recital. In symbolic statement by analogy it represents and foreshadows the technical achievement, and metaphor and simile are freely used. An example is a Maori spell giving speed and grace to a canoe, which speaks of the swiftness of a bird on the wing and the lightness of a sea gull and which uses such onomatopoeic effects as speed noises or the wailing of the sea.

In blessings and curses, which are similar types of verbal expressions, the efficacy of the recitation is also believed to be connected to the magical power of the words themselves or to the sacred power of a supernatural being. Certain gestures as well as words may be bound up with the act of blessing, as in putting one’s hands on the head of the person being blessed. The curse, a wish to cause harm or misfortune, is usually directed against others, although an important form of curse, associated with oaths, contracts, and treaties, is conditionally directed against oneself, should one fail to keep one’s word or tell the truth.

Much anthropological literature refers to the objects used in magic as "medicines," hence the popular use of the term medicine man for magician. These medicines include herbs, animal parts, gemstones, sacred objects, or props used in performance and are thought to be potent in themselves or empowered by incantations or rituals. In some cases, medicines that are intended to heal are physiologically effective; for example, the poppy is used widely as an anesthetic, willow bark is used by some as an analgesic, and garlic and onions being used as antibiotics. Other medicines that are meant to cause harm, such as toad extracts and bufadienolides, are, in fact, known poisons. Other materials have a symbolic relationship to the intended outcome, as with divination from animal parts. In scapulamancy (divination from a sheep shoulder bone), for example, the sheep’s bone reflects the macrocosmic forces of the universe. In sorcery a magician may employ something belonging to the intended victim (e.g., hair, nail parings, or a piece of clothing) as part of the ritual. The rite itself may be symbolic, as with the drawing of protective circles in which to call up spirits, the sprinkling of water on the ground to make rain, or the destruction of a wax image to harm a victim. Plants or other objects can also symbolize desired outcomes: in rites to ensure a canoe’s speed, an example is the use of light vegetable leaves to represent the ease with which the craft will glide over the water; another example is to place a stone in a tree fork to postpone the setting of the sun; and a final example is that a people once swallowed gold to cure jaundice.

Because magic is based on performance, ritual and the magician’s knowledge and ability play a significant role in its efficacy. The performance of magic also presumes an audience, either the spiritual forces addressed, the patient-client, or the community. Both the magician and the rite itself are concerned with the observance of taboos and the purification of the participants. Magicians, like priests presiding over religious rituals, observe restrictions of diet or other certain activities to demarcate the rite from ordinary and profane activities and to invest it with sanctity. Illusions are the most easy to perform.

F U N C T I O N S

Foremost among the many roles magic plays are its “instrumental” and “expressive” functions. Based in the attempt to influence nature or human behaviour, magic’s instrumental function is measured by its efficacy in achieving the desired result. Anthropologists identify three main types of instrumental magic: the productive, the protective, and the destructive. Productive magic is employed to solicit a successful outcome from human labour or nature, such as bountiful hunt or harvest or good weather. Protective magic aims to defend an individual or community from the vagaries of nature and the evil of others. The use of amulets to ward off contagious diseases or the recitation of charms before a journey are examples of this protective function. Lastly, destructive magic, or sorcery, is intended to harm others, often is motivated by envy, and is socially disruptive. Consequently, the use of countermagic against sorcery may relieve some social tension within a community.

Magic’s expressive function results from the symbolic and social meanings attached to its practices, though its performers may not necessarily be aware of this function. Magic can provide a sense of group identity through shared rituals that give power or strength to members. At the same time, it can isolate the magician as a special person within or on the margins of society. Magic can also serve as a creative outlet or form of entertainment. It is, therefore, inseparable from the total system of thought, belief, and practice in a given society.
