Sunja-ya, a woman’s life is endless work and suffering. There is suffering and then more suffering. It’s better to expect it, you know. You’re becoming a woman now, so you should be told this. For a woman, the man you marry will determine the quality of your life completely. A good man is a decent life, and a bad man is a cursed life—but no matter what, always expect suffering, and just keep working hard. No one will take care of a poor woman—just ourselves.
It’s OK to make mistakes. It’s OK to not win.
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. But not anymore. Now, I’m a housewife. Now, I realize full well that I’m not cut out to be a writer. I’m sure of it. I would exhaust all my ideas in a single work. I would end up writing about a woman whose life, both past and present, is just like mind. In Japanese context, that would make it an I-novel, I suppose. But the genre wouldn't matter. A novel featuring a woman just like me would appear on the bookstore shelves, and then someone would buy it. That reader would point to me and say: See, she’s written a novel about herself.
Even if I could write a book worthy of stirring people’s emotions, something that might bring them to tears, that wouldn’t change the fact that I’m still just an ordinary, mediocre person.
