A victory won at too great a cost to have been worthwhile for the victor.

The Tower of Helia - Clairvoyant Headquarters

All my life I was told that people live only to die. They say that death is the ultimate victory; that it's the prize you get for beating the impossible game called Life. It's ironic that your greatest achievement comes only at the moment of your greatest loss. I thought it funny considering no one really wants to die. We all simply want out of this fucked up world.

The sad reality is, no matter who you are or what you do on this earth while you're alive, in the end we all die and all end up the same. We all become a Pyrrhic. That's what we call the reincarnated souls of the departed. The Pyrrhics are the most dangerous force humanity must face, considering that the more we die, the more their numbers grow. They aren't a force we can ever hope to stop, but we like to think we've taken strides in keeping those monsters at bay.

As children, we're taught that when we die, our soul leaves our mortal body and becomes something more. Something dangerous, a physical manifestation of the anger and hatred that festered within us during our time walking the earth. A new creature is created and we don't know how or why this happens or what causes it. They're like nothing else living on this earth. They're monsters, the embodiment of humanity's flaws transformed into something meant to destroy us.

They come in different forms, the most common being the mindless Shades, or the Darkened as the Clairvoyants call them. Then there are the Sullen, the ones that exist to hunt us down, destroy our cities, you get it. They're tough and range in strength and size, depending on how many years they've existed or the type of soul they came from. Lastly, we have the good guys. The ones that drift about the world without a care and generally don't attack us. They are called the Essence, a collection of pure souls, typically created from those of children that died before their time. They work to make the world better, using their energy to keep the forests green, our water clean and clear, and maintain just about everything else that keeps the world spinning. Just like the Shades and Sullen, they too become smarter and stronger over the years.

The Clairvoyants, put simply, are humanity's protectors. They're humans born with the affinity for magic: the only thing capable of destroying the Pyrrhics for good. Those of us who can't fight the Pyrrhics, the ones born without an affinity for magic, spend our time making sure society keeps running. I mean, what else can we do? Without a connection to magic, it's impossible for us to fight them. Things like knives and swords do little but anger them. Everyone has their place in the world. Some are meant for glory, and others... well, we're meant to tend to those with the Glory. In the end, all of humanity just continues to do what we've always done: fight to prolong the inevitable.

Our extinction.

Important Words:
Shades/Darkened - Most common Pyrrhic. Generally weak but make up for it in numbers.

Clairvoyant - Mages that specialize in many fields of magic and fight the Pyrrhics. Typically each Clairvoyant has one specialization, with a rare few exceptions.

Augmentor - An item, specific to each Clairvoyant, imbued with magical energy that allows for the casting of spells.

Circle - A group of Clairvoyants who fight exclusively together. Generally formed based upon skills that fit well together in battle.

Sullen - The older and stronger Pyrrhics. Shades can become Sullen after years of killing and growing in strength.

Essence - Pyrrhics made of souls that were pure. Few and far between, they have been known to use their time in existence to better the crumbling world.

Thanks everyone for the interest! I think I have enough here to start working on the RP thread.

@Lord of Evil Yep, I’ll be posting my character here soon, once I’m done with her. Honestly I really want to leave that kind of open for you, simply because I feel like it’ll make things more interesting. I’m not expecting anyone to be like world destroying powerful (yet) however what’s the fun in everyone being the same power level? How about, you give me the craziest ideas you can, and when I look over your character, we’ll tone it down if need be.

That goes for everyone.
@Sierra@Hawlin@Duoya updated the OP with a CS template I threw together. Not looking for much honestly, so if you're wanting to get a head start, feel free :3
@Sierra Make sure you think closely about what kind of magic you want to have. Though you're limited to one, I encourage you to consider all the ways you can use your affinity to (mostly) fight monsters and survive. :3

Abjuration magic is taken (by my character :3)

Also, if you are considering an elemental magic, you can only choose one element.
@Sierra moved to my laptop cause my phone was derping. To answer your question, I really don't know what century to put this with, simply because there's never really been a need for the modern technology that we think about and use these days. I tagged the topic as medieval simply because I was trying to emphasize the fact that there is little to no technology in this world.

As far as the groups are concerned, there will be a clear goal that the characters will find out about in the RP. This is going to be a really mature kind of RP, so I'm going to be looking closely at the characters and gonna be trying to put them together in an interesting way. :3

Thanks for all the questions so far! Hopefully I an find some more interest. Any more questions/suggestions are really encouraged!
@Hawlin Forgot to mention you in the first one, and actually I’m keeping a limit on races, just because I don’t want my original idea to become too fantastical with elves and dwarves and things like that. The world is essentially as it is now with just humans and the current animal species. Only difference is between those who can use magic and those who cannot.

As far as the types of magic that are available, I leave that entirely to your imagination. The most rare being those who possess affinities for multiple schools of magic. Without getting too into the categories of magic, I’m leaving that open ended for people to be as creative as they want with their characters.
Ooh yay I wasn’t expecting interest so soon honestly.

The state of the world is sort of like... pockets of civilization that are few and far between. Large cities are protected by barriers and everything that goes in and out is closely monitored. That being said, there are no cars, cell phones, or technology like that, however things such as transportation and communication between long distances DO exist, but are carried out by those who use magic. Teleportation spells and things like that. In the smaller villages, things are a bit tougher considering they don’t have much access to those kinds of magic.

Does that make sense?

So, if you're interested in what I have going so far, awesome!

Basically, our roles in the RP will be as Clairvoyants who, starting off, are going to be separated into Circles. Depending on how many people we have (up to about 10) there will be 1 or 2 Circles (groups of 4-5 characters) that this story will follow. As your character learns to grow along with the others in their Circle, they will constantly battle unknown monsters and face certain death from other Clairvoyants, humans, and Shades alike. More will be explained as the story progresses, but this is the basic idea of it. If I can get about 4 interests, I'll post a CS.

I could be down to join something like this, and would love to help expand on the idea.
