Current Teaching myself web development by trying to fix some BBCode bugs/features in the Guild is probably a bad idea. Oh, well.

If school were less hard, it'd be less interesting. I still want it to be less hard, though.

Dear everyone: it might be useful to have some sense of scale on these ships, so what are our thoughts on including a length section on the character sheet?

I didn't originally include it because I didn't want to have too many technical fiddly bits getting in the way of, you know, actually RP'ing. :P

Announcement #2: We've got some powerful ships out here. More powerful than I had originally envisioned.
I like powerful ships, but I fear if we keep them as-is, we'll render the smaller ships (such as the Intrepid (Mr Rage) or Pale Quiver (Spybuster)) irrelevant. Therefore, I've asked some of you to tone down your ships somewhat.

On a completely unrelated note, I was having the damnedest time trying to decide which ship to go with (that's why the example sheet took so long, fyi). Part of me wanted to go with something from Stargate; another part of me wanted to do something based on the Red Alert 2 universe, and the rest of me was pulled in so many directions - a homebrewed ship of appearance-obsessed greenskinned aliens, Space Station 13, something from Pulsar, BSG -! There are so many fun options!

Anyway.

@Silentsniper211
I started watching Red vs. Blue and loved it, actually. I always thought it would be stupid with the kind of humor I don't appreciate, but it wasn't! I was so pleasantly surprised! Then classes started up again, and I had to stop. I'll add it to my list of things to watch after or between Stargate episodes - which I'm re-watching for the third time (in in-universe chronological order).

God, I love Stargate.

I digress.

Sooo many people on that ship. Trim it down by a factor of ten or so, and that will probably be reasonable, simply by average ship crew complement for this RP.

Also, I'd recommend going back over your Universe Background section. The first few sentences didn't quite make sense, especially "The Human race was interested in the rapid expansion of the . as more planets were colonised".

Side note: have you been watching Firefly recently? I, like, totally got a Firefly vibe from your universe description.

I also like the dualism inherent in the military ship converted to science cruiser concept. That'll be fun for us to play with.

@Ryker Rohrer
"Ghost Hunter". ...what! That sounds wicked fun! How did - I have so many questions - how did you start!? Are you terrified of ghosts? Where do you usually operate? Also, hello! Welcome to the forums!

Starcraft! Squee!
...I know it's not Starcraft, but you used a Starcraft picture for your ship and that made me inordinately happy!

That is large. Now my poor Soviets feel inadequate, too. No biggie, every RP needs power adjustments as character sheets come in. I recommend toning the ship down slightly - I get that it's the flagship of a galaxy, but as it is, there doesn't seem to be any way to challenge the ship or the crew. And without challenge, we've got no story.

@Mr Rage
Nooooooo your store that's so sad! Good luck! What'd you think of the new Star Trek movie - or have you watched the new movies at all? I personally liked it. I really appreciated the love interest for Scotty, and I also adore how the actors have made the characters their own.

heehee... Albert Pegg, perhaps in reference to Simon Pegg? I don't care; it's canon in my head now.

Accepted! Go post your sheet in the characters tab.

@Lucidnonsense Sure! A habitat would be fine. Part of me wanted to throw DS9 or Babylon 5 into the mix, but I refrained. Crazy soviets seem more entertaining to me.

*googles "Eclipse Phase"*
Players take part in a cross-faction secret network dubbed Firewall that is dedicated to counteracting "existential risks" — threats to the existence of transhumanity, whether they be biowar plagues, self-replicating nanoswarms, nuclear proliferation, terrorists with WMDs, net-breaking computer attacks, rogue AIs, alien encounters, or anything else that could drive an already decimated transhumanity to extinction.
= Eclipse Phase Homepage

WHAT. That sounds DELIGHTFUL. Where has this been my whole tabletop career?!

@Hostile
Gaming? Computer or tabletop? If computer, do you have thoughts on No Man's Sky? If tabletop, have you ever played Paranoia? And what reading genre - sci-fi, I presume? Ever read the Commonwealth series by Peter F. Hamilton? It's my favorite series. I love how he takes 12 different characters with unrelated plotlines and then suddenly relates them all in a brilliant conclusion - except, wait, no, you've still got 300 pages to go, and how could it possibly get better and bigger and more climactic and then it does and squee~

Ahem.

Yay, you went for Titan! I like how much more sense Titan makes than even Mars to a degree. I mean, at least Titan's got an atmosphere. sidenote: screw you, cosmic radiation. Screw. You.

Like I've mentioned to Silentsniper211 and Ryker Rohrer, please decrease your crew complent by a factor of 10. That way Mr Rage's Intrepid isn't totally overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people. I think you're probably fine beyond that? It's very hard to tell what's OP and what's not before a game actually starts, especially when it comes to military ships. If you want to be safe, you could tone down the ships armament slightly, but I'll leave it up to you.

Nikolai and my entire ship are going to get along swimmingly. Or they'll hate each other. I don't think there's anything in between the two possibilities.

@Spybuster Ooh! What's your major? Have you had any horrible death classes yet? I have! Dynamics was hard. And before that, so was Differential Equations. I picked a hard major. I mostly don't regret it, though. Have you used Yik Yak? Are you annoyed at its destruction of anonymity features as I am with its latest update? It's so silly! The app was based on anonymity! Why would they get rid of it? Also do you do theater? I do theater. Or did. I'm trying to get back into it. I'm rambling; sorry, it's 4am.

Aww, your ship is tiny and adorable! Seriously, though, you may want to consider upping your crew complement. By no means feel obligated to! Just something to consider.

Accepted! Go post your sheet in the characters tab.
@Mr Rage I added two fields to the character sheet between the IC and now; you should add those.

I'm finishing up the example character sheet; that way you guys have something to reference.
OOC is up! I'm happy so many people are interested!

  • Roleplay ships stranded in intergalactic space by a wormhole!
  • Pull ships from your imagination or fiction!
  • Exciting developments when the wormhole periodically re-opens!
  • Decide your own long-term goal!

This is, essentially, a fish-out-of-water story (that's fish plural, not fish singular). Our fish are literally outside their galaxies, but they're also meeting with alien ways of thinking and doing things. The fun comes from seeing what happens when, say, a technological cult of militant cynics meets a cooperative bunch of peaceful explorers. Or the image of an engineer scratching his head on seeing a slightly different solution to FTL travel that shouldn't be possible. Or a pilot, gleefully flying a (to her) extremely graceful alien fighter. Or two communications officers exchanging love letters via sub-ether radio as their captains slowly move toward open hostilities.

Ideally, this is all a vehicle for some fun exploration, alien diplomacy, perhaps some conflict, technology exchange, and banding together in difficult circumstances. I plan for there being an initial encounter/get-to-know-everyone/(form alliances?) period, and then the wormhole will open up, dropping something interesting into the mix - a planet, a station, a spacetime anomaly, a space whale, some hostile ships, a weapon, some fuel, or plans for an intergalactic warp drive that may or may not work, for example.

  • Have suggestions on things to pop out of the wormhole? Suggest away!
  • Please post at least once a week. If there's extenuating circumstances, please, let us know in the OOC! Since much of this RP is dependent on player-to-player interaction, a missing player is a big deal.
  • Speaking of which, this is going to be something of a commitment (again, this is because the story will be driven primarily by player-to-player interaction). Honestly ask if you can see yourself playing this RP a month from now before you apply.

Comms Colors

I've noticed that we seem to be adopting the standard of colored quotes as inter-ship communications. Here's a list of who is using what color at the moment:
Queen Raidne [red]
NanoFreakV2 [00aeef]
Silentsniper211 [008B8B]
Hostile [0072bc]
Spybuster [6ecff6]
Flamelord [bc8dbf]
Mr Rage [white]

Character Sheet:
For story-purposes, any intergalactic drives are broken. Probably from the trip through the wormhole.
But maybe... internal sabotage? I don't know, just a thought.

Wait List:
(If anyone drops out, this is who I'll contact in this order):
1. Sep
2. Boomlover
3. Charter

Accepted Ships:

Queen Raidne's Romanova: Soviet military propaganda testbed. (Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2)
Mr Rage's Intrepid: Harvesting and Manufacturing ship.

*It will never be as fun as a Vasari Jarrasul
I literally mean to roleplay a ship. Sort-of like an NRP, you have 3 or 4 important people you actually RP, and the rest are abstracted. You can also have the ship perform actions itself while abstracting most of the crew, like moving somewhere or firing some lasers. But, who doesn't want to hear your captain shout "Fire!" with steel in their eyes before pretty beams of sparkly death shoot across space?

As for the everyone-in-one-ship idea, that's a valid way to do it, but not what I was imagining.

The wormhole sucks in your ship slowly at first, but the ship's speed keeps ticking up and up. By now you've called for full reverse thrust, but it doesn't appear to be making a difference. Space stretches before you on the viewscreens, stars bending into lines and a swirling rush of color. The last you and your crew see of known space is a fish-eyed view of distortion. Then all is a rush of strange color and shapes. Your science officers assure you that you're looking at successive three-dimensional slices of four-dimensional objects, but all you can think about is what might happen if your ship crashes into one of the tortuous shapes. Astrogation reports errors - there are no stars or satellites to gain a bearing off of in here. Through the fog you detect echoes of other metal ships and distorted nav signals. And then, just as suddenly as you entered it, you're through the wormhole. Space flops back into its regularly-established shapes. Astrogation reports that you've traveled 1.2 million lightyears. The ship is stranded between two galaxies, far outside its drive's range. Communications reports that they've picked up other ships floating with you in the barren void between galaxies.

You are alone, far from everything you and your crew knows - except for all the other ships, floating out there with you.

In this RP, you will roleplay a ship stranded by a wormhole in intergalactic space. The ships can be from your imagination or pulled from fiction. The wormhole will periodically open up and spit out something interesting - whether a necessary or valuable resource, derelict ship, or some form of antagonist. It's up to you what to do with it, and what your long-term goal is.

Ideally, this is all a vehicle for some fun exploration, alien diplomacy, perhaps some conflict, technology exchange, and banding together in difficult circumstances. I plan for there being an initial encounter/get to know everyone period, and then the wormhole will open up, dropping something interesting into the mix - a planet, a station, a spacetime anomaly, space whales, hostile ships, a weapon, fuel, plans for an intergalactic warp drive that may or may not work.

Interested?

At the rate my Dynamics class is killing me, I'm not sure if I have time for this RP, sadly.

We'll see if I manage to get my two posts/month in this month. If not....
Ha! Right. I'm causing all sorts of delays for you, aren't I, Ozerath? :P
I'm back! Summer Session has started, seems fine so far. Gotta catch up with what's been going on in here. I'm probably going to start having something to post late this week, likely another explorer post. Wasn't someone chasing Helena?
I'm going away for the weekend, and then school starts for the summer. I'm both intimidated and excited. Going into another semester of engineering school is like going into another burst of combat. You know it's going to suck and you can't do anything about it, but at the same time, you really want to be there and you feel all competent about it. I love it so much and hate it at the same time.

To make a long story short, I'm not going to reply to your pm for a few days, @Ozerath.
