Dirt Road

Hm. Lying face down...? That was a very unusual position to be waking up in. It also felt like the floor, which... might explain it? Although, if it was after some work drinking party, then surely there should also be a splitting headache to go with it? Plus, being en route from Japan to New York rather ruined the odds of that...

Standing up, Hikari was forced to take in rather a lot of things. Well, there was the strangely-huge man shouting at her, that was one thing. The next was...

Hm. Why was she dressed as a maid? Was this some sort of joke? That would be annoying.

Her tails twitched in irritation.

Wait. Tails?

Twisting a little--

Yes, tails. Plural. Counting them was quite hard, and being able to feel them didn't make it the easiest, but... nine. Nine tails. And her ears had migrated. Honestly, the other changes seemed less important than now having nine tails. No wonder this dress felt like it was sitting oddly... not that she had experience of that before this, but she would have expected it to hang more about her legs. Having all these behind her... yes, that explained it.

Right, so she was now a maid. And a fox. And... probably young? Or maybe very old? Either one could fit. Now, she should address this person that had been telling her to get up.

"Ah, I apologise, I was distracted by how much my body has changed," the small fox said, bowing.

Steven probably wasn't expecting the proper introduction he then got. Although a flicker of irritation passed over her face at not being able to hand over... something.

Candaeln

The night their collective teachers had decided that the knights were sufficiently trained in whatever talent they had been honing--from Cyrus's enthusiastic endorsement to Silenna's begrudging acceptance that maybe Rolan wouldn't blow his head up--there was a party at Candaeln. The guest list was mostly as expected, although the grouchy alchemist showing up before ultimately throwing herself at Florian as the knight went on probably came as a surprise.

And Gisela didn't attend, but there was no way for that to be particularly unexpected.

Prince Erion attending, along with some of his guards? That definitely caused a stir, even amongst the legendary knights--it wasn't like the prince to attend these things rather than throw them. But he seemed interested in speaking to them a little, starting with their captain.

Eastwards Road

In the morning, it was time to make their way through the city and out of the eastern gate. As promised, the Talderian prince had assembled his retinue--row after row of gleaming silvered armour, deep red half-capes edged in gold thrown over their left arms. The uniformity of their equipment was quite a contrast to themselves; their armour identical, every soldier outfitted with a straight sword, a dagger, and even a shield.

They were also outnumbered, even after half of them had bowed and moved off far to one side, where they wouldn't possibly get in the way.

And behind them, seated on an out of place carved throne, waited the prince. Their goal--as he had been quite happy to clarify in detail--was not to defeat his knights, and least of all himself. No, they merely had to get within striking distance of Erion. That was their first challenge.
Fujiwara no Mokou

With the centipede suitably exploded, Mokou boldly decided to climb to her feet and get a better look at the state its biting had left her arm in. That was... ew, the blood and chunk bitten out of it was bad enough, but the spreading rot was the worst. Well, apart from the hand and forearm, that was just charred as normal. Yeah, she ought to do something like this and not just wait for it to heal off naturally, the rest of her would keep protesting at having this attached.

Fortunately, there was also a headless centipede that needed to be put down, and she still had one arm that wasn't damaged at all any more than normal. So if she just jumped over to it and...

The sudden pillar of flame centred on the centipede's ruined head was probably only a little surprising for the actual fire. The fact that it very briefly lead to a curious lack of a certain white-haired girl before she just... sprung back into existence, non-bitten or burnt hands shoved into her pockets, was no doubt slightly more baffling to those not aware of her immortality. The shirt looked a little worse off for it all, though.

If there was another thing to be annoyed at Kaguya for, it was that her and Eirin had way better abilities for this whole 'healing' thing.

Miina Malina

Looking at the fields in curiosity was... strange. Well, one they were just unusual to her, having grown up in a forest and all. Her detour off through Edren hadn't often taken her through cultivated fields, and the ones that she had passed by tended to be different. To see this much of a single food in one place... well, hopefully it was meant to be food, and they didn't just have an odd fixation with surrounding their village with one sort of grass? That would be bad. Though it would explain why everyone looked so starved, so maybe--

Ah, it was the invaders? So it was meant to be food, then. Why were they starving the populace? Starving people were worse at doing... well, anything, right? So they'd get more overall if they taxed less and didn't risk everyone starving to death.

Maybe the Valheimr knew something about farming that she didn't? That was also quite likely.

Before they entered the village, they were accosted by a Viera in a tree. That alone drew attention--so this one knew the other Mystral, who seemed to be well known from what everyone had said? Or knew someone that knew her? Huh, what were the odds of that. Even as everyone else started to voice their doubts or opinions on whether she was honest, Miina kept quiet. It wasn't as if she knew much about infiltration or verifying strange shady people, so she couldn't really say. Sure, she dressed a bit blatantly, but would anyone really be looking for that...? And she could just change clothes.

But her last attempt at making friends had lead to working with some rather unsavoury people. So she'd just keep quiet. And keep watching the Viera.

Did being a Viera make them bouncier?
Samurai

The samurai paused for a second, as if dumbfounded by his blade being caught--and then opted to retreat, abandoning the weapon entirely with a jump back and smoothly pulling up a replacement at the same time. Of course, that briefly raised the question of how exactly the ghost was planning to shoot a bow with no arrows--

Ah, some form of magical lightning condensed into an arrow. And that would do it. If anything, this was worse than sword fighting, because it would quickly become apparent that these hit much harder than the musket balls had. On the plus side, at least it was slightly easier to dodge them--advantageous, unless Zhao wanted to be both pincushioned and electrocuted.

Both the komainu were showing the expected resilience of stone guardians--Arisa's swing sent hers flying, but it scrambled to its feet easy enough, and rather than going back for the sword-wielder seemed to show the awareness to get her attention another way: lunging for Zhao's back, where he'd be hard pressed to deal with both it and dodging the arrows. Masaru... well, after briefly pausing, that beast began to charge forwards again, the arrow sticking out of its head having been insufficient to entirely bring it down.

Fortunately, the tide seemed to be turning with the common enemies--the ashigaru were no longer reforming, the goop instead streaming back towards their primary enemy, being absorbed beneath the armour. Even the cannons had accepted being destroyed by a rampaging monster, failing to get another shot off. Not that Tera was entirely left alone, their final previous foes revealing themselves: a handful of practically-dressed types, carrying some rather obvious metal spheres. With lit fuses. Right next to her, in grabbing range.
Fujiwara no Mokou

With the wind amplifying the resultant firestorm into something way more impressive than Mokou's own flame whirlwind--now wouldn't those be a fun pair to combine?--it came as quite a surprise that the centipede was still alive. Now, normally one would think that a ground-bound insect isn't going to provide much of a threat to someone who can effortlessly fly and manoeuvre in three dimensions, but there was a crucial point at play here: the canopy overhead was somewhat restrictive, and this centipede was actually huge.

She would probably have avoided it fine if its survival wasn't so surprising. Which lead to her current predicament: being smashed out of the sky, and pinned under a creature that was far too big for her to possibly move it. Oh, and it had broken something in its flailing. Probably a shin bone? It was her leg that was hurting--oh, her neck too, guess that had gotten broken. That explained the position, must have died there--

Oh, crap it was biting her. Wasn't it full!? That fucking hurt, more than the leg thing did, now it was... well, she'd probably find out what the hell the venom was doing later, but probably "nothing good". Actually, it felt kind of weird already. Being bitten didn't normally hurt internally like that...

She should probably do something about this, right? But burning it externally hadn't done much, and even if its underside was squishier, she couldn't really move much. But... its mouth was right there, and her arm was probably functionally useless anyway.

Tuning out all the screaming--seemed the vampire had finally stopped freaking out?--Mokou took the entirely reasonable step of shoving her arm into the giant centipede's mouth as possible. See if it would survive an exploding fireball inside its own head.
Fujiwara no Mokou

Really, what was the vampire's issue? The insects were ugly and probably painful but it wasn't like they were much of a threat to someone like her. Probably? There was something weird about them, they did seem awful squishy for insects and, as someone who had spent the best part of the last thousand years in Japan's forests, Mokou could say with some confidence that she was fairly versed in what insects tended to be like.

Crunchier.

But with everyone firing bullets, running around like crazy, or just plain cutting through them, at least it was now clear enough to see what the real reason was: they were soft because they were babies. That was one big centipede.

... should they even be letting the miko anywhere near this thing?

Still, it was big enough that it would take a lot more effort than a simple fireball to kill this. And going the full danmaku route was probably out; the forest might not catch fire given the current conditions, but everyone else would still have to worry about all the fire floating around. Or, in the extreme case, the lack of oxygen and overall temperature--the spell card rules really did make things a lot more convenient with having fire that didn't actually need to be hot.

Since she was already flying, that made the choice pretty simple: just dive into the thing feet-first, let the kick do whatever damage it did (mostly to her legs) and stagger it, because the more important part--

Was the erupting plume of fire afterwards.

Some Hall

"A circle that summons Niyar and only Niyar," the hundi said, inspecting the sheet of paper, nodding, and then handing over another blank copy. "The difficulty in modification is the point."

She stood up, leaning against the demon and tapping her fingers on the staff. "Modifying summoning is dangerous. The traditional circles are designed to be augmented by all sorts of ritual to provide the power needed, and the beginner summoners there are protected by their own lack of power. If they modify something without understanding, taking the broad instructions given and pointing to something else... it will probably take no notice. But even then, you must know the stories--a weak apprentice tries to summon a fey for help, but botches it and calls forth the unseelie and a far higher price...

"Someone with the strength to be a true mage is even more in danger. They can skip all the ritual, the strength of their call no longer limited by knowledge. The stories of a foolish child who hastily modifies a circle that barely described a sex demon in a search for vengeance, and calls forth something far... more. Something the meagre protections they created cannot hold, or maybe they thought that through and instead make a deal at a price far too high," Gisela shook her head, pacing a little. "So, I created these circles. Without intimate knowledge of what you hope to summon, then they cannot be modified successfully. Even if far more mana is used than they require, it only strengthens the bindings.

"Anyone who learns enough to change them is someone I would be happy to call a colleague rather than an apprentice. We have nothing so formal but the same principals apply," she finished. And, in the case of this one, maybe the experience would teach her how to negotiate with powerful entities without offending them. "Until then... well, I have circles prepared for Niyar, Lamplighters, Sylphs, Imps..."

She paused. "Oh, and incubi are mostly safe. Or succubi, whichever you prefer."
