Zeke gradually became aware of Viola's music changing, and somehow it seemed more appropriate for the wide open park they were now in. His parents had brought him here the day before school started, and he knew there was an ice cream trailer by the fountain. He looked over and spotted it, tugging at Viola's hand so that she followed him, and her music followed her.
The person at the ice cream stand was tall. Or was it that Zeke was short? An older kid who had a funny hat that looked like an upside-down boat folded from cardboard. "Viola," Zeke stretched the word until it was a tune of its own. "What kind do you like? I like the chocolate ones, with the nuts." He pointed with his free hand at the sign on the front of the cart, slightly in shade from the red-and-blue umbrella above.
As always though, his attention wandered. The fountain in the park reminded him of the splash from yesterday, and he thought about how he got a rainbow from the spray. Then he looked at the people sitting on benches near the fountain and how the shadows were almost directly underneath them. After a few minutes of intense calculation, Zeke came back to himself and tugged on Viola's hand again. He knew what sort of photo he wanted to take of her.
