Years ago I remember this website had something pretty much as you describe. I guess the best way to describe it was like the arena but with talking. They were never really my thing due to the innate lack of direction but it always seemed like a popular place for people to exhibit their characters. I remember this website also tried to set up a PW a couple of times which in a way was similar to the Inn concept except with worlds. That was awesome for the month where it worked, you had like six plots going on in one setting and multiple settings. It was just too much to run though and inevitably collapsed. The Inn thing sounds totally doable though.

Not years ago. It was still going strong, from what I remember, up till the "old" site was lost. Can't remember offhand the title of it, I just remember having to bow out my character due to my having to move, and the loss of my internet access. I seem to remember something like 54 pages or more... fantastic interactions, we even had a whole storyline going on involving a religious cult that murdered anyone they considered sexually deviant. My character got "taken out" during an attack on a nearby beach. One of the RPs I was most sad to see lost.

As for tavern/inn threads in general, I have to say, they're my fave form to RP in. Get a good group together, like we had on the old guild, and it can go fantastic places, story-wise.

Now I'm wondering what their ingredients were.

Weeeell... given the "nature" of a "peeping tom"... heh... I shudder to think.

What's the best romance subplot you've had? And what advice can you give on writing one?

To question one, I did win "Most Romantic" in a "Speed Dating" RP competition, in which one of my characters went out on a date with another person's character... also won "Best RP" on top of that. As for the second question? Hard to say, since romance is an individual thing. You're either a romantic person, or not. Best thing is to just let it flow. Like you already noted, don't force it.

Hmmm. I hate to suggest it, but... heh... I thought mayhaps reading "Romance" novels might help. I've never read such things, buuuut who knows?
You mean DID help you, right?
Published poet here... I concur with the others who have so far commented. Just Write!

(God, Brovo, you're my hero.)If you wanted to keep a character as close to real life as possible, think about their upbringing and personality before the tragedy/tragedies.

This is what I did with my character Pico. His "tragic" past includes not only his family being killed when he was very young, it also included his exile when the Theocratic "powers that be" decided he hadn't "grieved enough"... which eventually lead to his complete exile, the "moment" when he decided to leave his entire planet behind and find a life "Elsewhere" in the universe. However, due to his upbringing and personality, rather than moping about, he used his personal "tragedy" as a reason to grab all he could out of life. To honor his family, his parents and siblings, by living true to what they'd taught him. And by defying the image of his kind in the eyes of others.

Of course, lots of other details, but that's the gist.

I am a big fan of the British space comedy known as Red Dwarf and I am wondering if anyone else on this site liked the show as well. So are their members of the guild who are Dwarfers?

Both cases are still tragic, definitely. It's just that one's a lot more clear cut on what happened than the other is.

Given the police officer sustained serious head injuries (a broken eye socket), and given that Michael Brown attacked the officer to begin with, aaand given witnesses are coming forth and confirming this (not to mention the forensic evidence on Brown's own body)... well, from all I've heard, it seems pretty clear what we have here is indeed another Trayvon Martin case. A justified shooting, in this case a police officer defending his life from a brutal attacker intent on getting his gun.

However, given this is not over, who knows what the final "verdict" will be. Unfortunately, just like in the Martin case, there will be people who will refuse to believe "the truth" of the matter. Because they believe their "truth" is real, even if it is just a "myth". A proven falsehood. In other words, a lose/lose situation.

In either case, a tragedy, if not a travesty.

This is something I do regularly, I have a selection of character 'archtypes' in a sense that I use, usually names assigned to personalities and basic characteristics, some more than others. but I'll always take care to match the character to the RP they're being inserted into from backstory to possessions and all the other setting specific stuff, I've had new character sets come from this process a few times as the character evolves in the new setting and ends up sometimes rather different to the starting point too, all part of the fun really.

This is one way to go about it. For me, I tend to choose RPs in which my characters would fit, or in which their very existence could lead to... well, the "unexpected". Isn't that one of the tenants of Creativity? Just because a character "doesn't fit" doesn't mean they can't add to the story. And given the fact I don't play humans, my characters/species are already designed to be flexible, to be fit in either a sci-fi or fantasy setting, just as they are. So yes, I "recycle". None of my characters are "disposable" and therefore I use them over and over again, simply picking the character out of my roster I think would most fit the particular RP I wish to join. I leave it up to the GM as to whether that character is accepted or not, though I have no trouble arguing my case, if I feel my "out of place" character could add interest to the RP, or at least some contrast, some twist to the action within the storyline.

My whole point in this is to build my roster of characters, to develop them, to make a history I can refer back to, so they play as three-dimensional, not just something that popped out of nowhere. Heh... not that I haven't read RPs or RP ideas and found brand new characters popping into my head. In fact, that's how I created my characters Thoee and Deen. And the Nism species as a whole. I was inspired, and that Inspiration resulted in a New Creation. Yes, popped out of nowhere, in effect, but built on over time and many RPs in which I've reused said characters. To the point they now have a daughter, and Thoee is overdue to give birth to their presently unborn son. If I'd thrown them away, not "recycled" them for continued development, they would never have grown into the characters they presently are.

Just a different way to go about it... a different way to enjoy "part of the fun", as you said. And like your method as well, I've had characters end up quite different than originally intended. I know I keep bringing them up, but Thoee and Deen are one of my prime examples. And I have indeed enjoyed much fun in seeing them grow and change.
