From the moment she woke up, Sophia von Riegan could feel a certain anticipation in the air. Today was the day. A certain heaviness in her heart kept her in bed for just a few more minutes; was she truly ready to leave Germany? For some American, middle-of-nowhere school? Of course, it wasn't as if she had a choice in the matter. The invitation to Marchand sealed her fate the moment it arrived. Within the hour, her parents had already scheduled the flight. Not that she blamed them, though--the Marchand Academy of Sorcery presented a unique opportunity to her. That unique opportunity was one she had heard a hundred times from her parents, who insisted on reminding her each chance they got. In truth, the matter was quite exhausting.
Her last few moments of rest were interrupted by the loud slam of her door opening, followed by the ever-recognizable footsteps of her mother. "Sophia! Wake up! You must get ready. Your flight leaves in just a few hours."
"Yes, Mother," she mumbled, dragging herself out of bed. All her belongings were packed the night before, including a laptop and an extensive collection of colored gel pens. By the time she'd showered and walked downstairs for breakfast, her bags had been placed by the door. It was as if her family wished for her to leave. The eager eyes of her parents met hers as she sat at the table, though silence reined for a few moments.
"Are you excited, dear?" her father asked, taking a bite of scrambled eggs. The question was an unfair one: saying no would change nothing, and saying yes would just make them feel better about it all.
"Yes, I am, Father." She thanked the maid who brought her food, though she was reluctant to touch it. Anxiety clawed at her stomach; how could she possibly eat?
"Now, your father and I don't need to remind you of the responsibility you have," her mother said, smiling. "Marchand will house the heirs of some of the most powerful magical families on Earth. It is critical that you befriend them, or are at least liked by them. But more importantly, you must compete with them."
Sophia could barely contain an eye roll.
"Your mother is right, Sophia. It took a war for the Riegans to gain any sort of renown. It's up to you to see it through." Her father continued to eat, though it was as if he was in a rush.
"You...you have my word, Father."
Marchand Academy of Sorcery
A full day of flying and many hours of bus riding later, Sophia stood before the Marchand Academy of Sorcery. The building was enormous, intimidatingly so, to the point that she hesitated to even enter. But, after a few moments of gawking, all she could do was walk inside, her bags trailing behind her. After a brief encounter with a less-than-enthusiastic receptionist, she walked up the stairs to the common room with several papers tucked under her arm. Before she opened the door, however, she took a moment to compose herself: she straightened out her skirt, tucked her hair into place, and fixed a bit of smudged eyeliner. She ought to look presentable, no?
After struggling with the door for a moment, Sophia stepped inside, somewhat surprised at the lackluster furniture. It was certainly a far cry from her family's home, at least. And yet, she couldn't help but find it oddly charming. Such beautiful architecture met with a violently clashing interior; she figured it suited a room intended for students to relax in. Glancing around, she could see a group of students had arrived before her, and had already helped themselves to a buffet table. Sophia could still feel the grip of anxiety, but she'd barely eaten since yesterday. She picked a few pancakes off the table, along with a glass of water, before wandering over to where the students were finding their seats. One boy, seated by himself, stood out to her; he seemed friendly enough, at least. She quietly sat next to him, offering a small smile.
Description: Tobias is a lean-albeit athletic-man, standing at 6'0" and weighing roughly 180 pounds. His hair is a shock of white (though he insists it's just very, very blonde), which contrasts his dark brown eyes. His skin is deathly pale, though if one looked closely, they'd find a smattering of scars along his shoulders and back. He also has two very prominent scars on either side his waist. Tobias always has a friendly smile on his face, and carries himself with confidence; this makes him seem quite approachable.
Tobias's clothing can be a bit eccentric. He enjoys wearing large, ornate cloaks adorned with various colors and patterns. His right ear is pierced, often bearing a small silver hoop ring. Tobias almost always has black fingerless gloves on, though they do not seem to have a practical use. Attached to his belt is a scabbard, which holds a knightly sword.
Personality: Tobias is, in a word, friendly. Suspiciously friendly. He seems capable of breaking bread with just about anyone, regardless of who they might be. His easygoing grin and relaxed posture tend to put others at ease, especially upon first meeting him. He doesn't discriminate against one's age, speaking even to children as equals. Despite this, nobody seems to really know him; he rarely shares any personal details about himself, and tends to avoid direct questions on the matter. Tobias has a way with words that makes him very persuasive, even manipulative at times; one would be hard-pressed to see through this act. Despite his somewhat lax nature, he's unnervingly punctual, always arriving exactly five minutes early to any scheduled event. Moreover, he does take his job seriously, putting a great deal of time into creating lesson plans and projects for his students. In fact, the amount of work he gets done in short periods of time is quite staggering.
Tobias does have some more unusual aspects of his personality. For one, he can sometimes be heard having full conversations with himself; he is quick to dismiss it as a bad habit, and becomes nervous when others catch him doing it. He is also especially prone to headaches, though he seldom complains, and refuses to seek out treatment for it. In addition, he tends to speak to his magical constructs as though they were living things (for example, his magically infused sword, or the balls of light he creates with his Illumination magic). Once again, he dismisses this behavior as a mere eccentricity, but to outsiders it may appear to be very strange.
Relationship: N/A
Skills: •Tobias is a gifted user of Defensive magic. He's a veritable master in the field, demonstrating great proficiency with both shields and negation fields. He is capable of using both as means of protecting himself, though he can also use them offensively. For instance, he can cover his body in a flexible shield, acting as a layer of armor that does not inhibit his movement. However, he can also trap opponents inside a combination shield/negation field, imprisoning them and removing their ability to use magic.
•Tobias is also a practiced user of Illumination magic. In addition to Illumination's traditional usage, he can create balls of light that are capable of independent movement, which can be "detonated" by Tobias whenever he chooses. They are almost lifelike, in that they seem to respond to his voice and movements, though this is entirely Tobias's doing.
•While not as proficient with it, Tobias is decent with Magical Infusement as well. His sword, for example, is enchanted so that it can create an energy shield at Tobias's will. His favorite cloak is also enchanted to be fireproof.
•Tobias is very charming, and gets along with others easily. He is capable of reading people, and is good at manipulating them when he feels the need to.
•He has a great deal of combat experience, and makes for a difficult opponent to face in battle. He is unusually resilient, capable of taking quite a beating and yet still managing to get back on his feet.
Weaknesses:
•Tobias is a rather suspicious person. His secretiveness, in conjunction with his overt friendliness, can make him difficult to trust.
•Certain magical wards seem to frighten him. He will refuse to enter some warded areas, and will leave if an area is about to become warded.
•His headaches can become near-debilitating if he gets overstimulated while they occur. Extremely strenuous physical activity or overexertion of his magic will cause this to happen.
Brief History:
The Keatons, once a renowned family of military prowess, have long since fallen into obscurity. The bloodline goes back centuries, all the way to the Anglo-Saxons who inhabited Britain in the 5th century. The family originally served directly under Alfred the Great, acting as defenders of his territory. Their use of Defensive magic was a great boon to King Alfred's military force, allowing the King to exert his combat prowess to its fullest capability. The Keatons continued to serve the Anglo-Saxon monarchs until the birth of Cedric Keaton.
From a young age, he established himself as something of a ruthless military leader; he was unflinchingly brutal toward enemies, trapping whole groups of people in shields and slowly suffocating them. It was during Cedric's time as the head of the Keaton family when William the Conqueror invaded England, intent on a Norman takeover; Cedric, deciding the current English king was weak, betrayed him for the Normans and ultimately helped cause his defeat. When William the Conqueror became the new ruler, Cedric suffocated the former English king's children to "eliminate them as potential threats to the throne." For this, William executed Cedric, declaring the act to be grossly inhumane. The remaining Keatons fled, their bloodline largely lost to history.
Tobias Keaton was born to a Cassandra Keaton, with no apparent father in the picture. Oblivious to his bloody heritage, Tobias was raised in a surprisingly normal setting, given he only had his mother. She diligently taught him to use magic, despite their somewhat poor financial situation. Tobias proved to be a fast learner, picking up Defensive magic with relative ease. Magic was, to him, a source of pride; it gave him something to succeed at. Once he'd proved himself with Defensive magic, Cassandra also began to teach him Magical Infusement and Illumination to round out his abilities. She hoped he could find some sort of magic-based career in order to support himself.
Then the war happened.
Perhaps out of duty, or a desire to protect her son, Cassandra Keaton volunteered to fight against the cult. Despite being out of practice, she joined up with a local battalion and defended the area for just over a year. However, she died in a large-scale battle against the cult, leaving Tobias an orphan. Deciding he had nothing left to lose, Tobias decided to carry on the fight in her name, throwing himself into the war against the cult. He purported himself to be fighting for a noble cause, but deep down, he knew it was about vengeance. However, his inexperience with combat proved to be his detriment, as he was captured six months later. The cult members holding him captive subjected him to all manners of torture, but Tobias proved himself to be quite resilient. But when they learned his full name-Tobias Keaton-it all came to a very sudden stop. They started to feed him regularly, and nobody laid a finger on him.
Another three months passed. Finally, a group was sent to rescue Tobias, along with others taken prisoner alongside him. But when that group arrived, it seemed every living thing in the vicinity had suffocated--every living thing except Tobias, who was locked in a small room by himself. He was immediately taken to safety, and once he recovered, he dove right back into the fray. Now, here he is, about to become a professor at the Marchand Academy of Sorcery; he wasn't sure if a teaching position would suit him, but he was sure as hell going to try.
Other: He has no idea who his birth father is, as his mother never told him.

Description: Sophia von Riegan is a rather petite girl, standing at around 5'4" and weighing roughly 125 pounds. Her eyes are a pale shade of gray, framed with fair skin and light brown hair. She has rather soft features, giving her a cute appearance, though she looks a bit younger than she really is. Sophia has a rather refined look with nice clothing and good posture; however, a glint of ambition in her eyes hints at something a bit deeper under the surface. She tends to wear a faint smile on her face, making her seem friendly and approachable at first glance.
Personality: Sophia is rather shy and soft-spoken, though she isn't unfriendly to those who approach her. She's a good listener, preferring to let others speak rather than speak herself. She's very thoughtful, always considering the needs of others before her own. At the same time, though, she can become lost in this thoughtfulness, sometimes spacing out when she's by herself. While she enjoys the company of others, she occasionally feels the need to be alone, secluding herself without saying anything to her friends. Sophia is typically very optimistic, always seeing the good in others or maintaining a positive outlook in bad situations.
In light of all this, it may come as a surprise to learn that Sophia has an ambitious, competitive side to her. She loathes failure in herself, and always strives to become better. She works very hard to maintain her grades, and can be counted on to go the extra mile in whatever she does. While Sophia places a great deal of pressure on herself to succeed, she intends to do so honestly; she would never chase her own goals at the cost of someone else's well-being. Moreover, she would never use nefarious means to seek out her own ambition. Despite all this pressure boiling under the surface, Sophia rarely voices her deeper thoughts and emotions. In fact, she's rather secretive, tending to keep an outwardly neutral appearance that makes her hard to read.
Crush: Open
Skills: •Being from the Riegan family, Sophia has a natural affinity for Defense. She's talented at creating shields and negation fields, allowing her to protect both herself and others. She has put a great deal of practice into this art, demonstrating great ability. However, she's better at creating negation fields than shields.
•In addition to Defense magic, Sophia has a penchant for Healing, having learned a bit of it per family tradition. However, she's a novice at best, and seeks to pursue it to a greater extent. At present, she's capable of healing small cuts and scrapes, as well as alleviating minor headaches.
•Sophia is a native speaker of German, as she was born in Hamburg. However, she is fluent in English, having been taught it from a young age.
•She has academia down to an art. While this is in part thanks to her natural intelligence, she's also a dedicated student. Sophia knows the most effective ways of learning and retaining information, and keeps herself very organized.
Weaknesses: •Sophia is pathetically gullible. She trusts people almost immediately, and is easily taken advantage of.
•While she has no qualms about sassing her peers, Sophia has a very difficult time standing up to authority figures. Whether they be teachers or even her own parents, she will usually submit to them. This can make her something of a doormat.
•Sophia's not much good in a head-on fight. She has little practical experience with weaponry, and only knows enough of hand-to-hand combat to get away from someone. She's much better in a supporting role than a directly offensive one.
•She has a tendency to abandon her own well-being for the sake of her goals. She will forgo food or rest without a moment's hesitation, and can put her health at risk as a result.
Brief History:
The Riegan family line is relatively new, having been founded by Claudius von Riegan during the early 1800s. Claudius earned a status of minor nobility and wealth by participating in the Napoleonic Wars; specifically, Claudius was one of the first field medics in history, serving in a mobile hospital during the wars. This established a long-held Riegan family tradition of military service, with almost all of his descendants becoming combat medics of some sort. The bloodline faded into relative obscurity throughout the remainder of the 1800s, though it maintained its nobility though continued military service. The Riegans fought on the side of Germany during World War I, with most of its male heirs perishing in the conflict, forcing the family into further obscurity. During World War II, still reeling from the loss, the Riegan family fled to Switzerland in fear of persecution. The family returned to Germany in the 1960s, setting its sights on higher status among magical nobility.
The Riegans would not gain any sort of prominence, however, until the recent magical war against the cult. During those three hellish years, the Riegan family (headed by Sophia's father Felix) earned a great deal of respect for their service as field medics. As of now, Felix von Riegan still heads the family, aiming to propel both himself and his bloodline into higher authority.
Sophia was born to Felix and Agatha von Riegan in Hamburg, Germany. Due to complications from her birth, Agatha could not have more children, leaving Sophia the only child-and thus, the only heir. Desperate to take advantage of the Riegans' newfound relevance, Felix and Agatha groomed Sophia from an early age to succeed. She was put through a rigorous early education, complete with private tutoring and extensive magical training. At the same time, Sophia was given a very sheltered childhood, surrounded by protective family members and hired personnel. She did not have much interaction with other children, outside of organized events with other "noble" families. Being the successor to the Riegan bloodline, Sophia was taught to represent her family as best as possible, receiving etiquette training and learning to be the refined heir her parents expected her to be.
Around the age of ten, Sophia began to demonstrate a great deal of magical ability, to the delight of her parents. Desperate to please them, Sophia started to conflate her ability with her self-worth; she focused on honing her skill, abandoning other activities in favor of study and practice. She also learned about her ancestors, learning to take pride in her family name and history. Given her family's wealth, she had access to all the academic resources she could ask for, ensuring her success in school. It was during this time that she developed her competitive edge, seeking not only to succeed, but also to outperform her peers.
When Sophia was invited to the Marchand Academy of Sorcery, Felix and Agatha recognized an opportunity: if Sophia could perform just as well as-if not better than-the students of renowned bloodlines, then surely that would prove the Riegan family's worth. Their reputation was already good; now, it was up to Sophia.
Other: Sophia enjoys reading and listening to music. During her free time, she is usually doing one or the other.
