Rank/Title NA
Physical AppearanceMary stands a little over 5 '4, yet despite her short stature she has a rather firm and plump frame. Her distinct physical features gives away much of her biracial ethnicity, having long dark curls and a darker skin tone which she mostly inherited from her mother and bright hazel eyes from her father.
She prefers clothing herself presentably, with dresses, skirts and bodices. She owns an Alamo bowie knife sheated and kept hidden under her blouse, a great western revolver, a hammer shotgun under the bar counter that is definitely not only for show.
Personality For many years Mary has mastered a variety of ways in getting anything she wants out of anybody. It's a gift, as she considers it, dawning from her competitiveness and inherent survival instinct, something she had gone through all her life being a child born to a slave mother. A woman who's principally the eyes and ears of the town, one of her greatest skills is "acquiring intel" , in more ways than one, and mostly, through rather questionable methods. If one would want to get some dirt on somebody, she'd be the go to woman. Working at a saloon she essentially takes advantage of her skills in a pool of spicy rumors and delicate informations that could arise some suspicion. Though there's not much going on in a small town such as Holbrook, she's still good at what she does, no matter how petty or big by standards the job using her charms and her wits as her own deadly weapons.
With her type of "job" she is prone to making enemies, her rather doubtful and stand-offish nature is the root of it. She personally despises people who take advantage on the indigent rather than giving them some sort of benefit in return. For that she is very much against slavery, but if they are reimbursed fairly then that's an entirely different thing. That being said Mary is not one to give charity, but would rather teach them how to carry their own weight, believing that it's the most valuable and practical thing they can give to anybody. Unsympathetic, some might see her, but rather fancies herself a realist more than anything.
InterestsMary is a fairly good shot herself. The first time she had ever held and shot a gun was when she was 14, shooting a man in self defense at point blank range. Joel, a fellow slave who soon became her husband had taught her a few tricks, when they would stroll in woods in the evenings either shooting bottles or game, among other romantic things. She finds gardening therapeutic, and would tend to some plants on her free time.
BackgroundMary was born in a plantation ranch owned by a wealthy slave owner. She never knew her father, only that her mother would dismiss her if she ever asked about him, and would rather not speak about him. They used to live in another town until her mother passed away from a disease. The following years she endured living under her vile owners who has a very strong disregard for their workers. They were treated as objects rather than real human beings and this became the root of her hate towards people like them. Nonetheless, she worked hard though without any real merit, only to make a clean impression and keep her away from trouble but unknowingly this only made it worse for her.
The husband, Mr. Neal took notice of the then young Mary. The kind that's not entirely of good intentions, unfortunately. One evening when he asked her to come up to his office, he brashly had his way with her and in the midst of it Mary frantically grab hold of the pistol on the desk and shot him in the face. That evening a fellow slave and a friend helped her escaped the plantation. The next three years Joel and Mary lived a rather peaceful life, working for nice folks at a city in Navajo. Their happy life was short lived however when a group of men started harassing them, it got to the point where they would spew threats and break property. Things turned for the worst one evening when they attacked Joel in an alleyway, when he tried to fight off one of them shot him to death. Nobody, not even the sheriff batted an eye at the situation so Mary planned to take matters into her own hands.
One evening Mary lured the gunner after a night of drinks at the saloon and cornering him at a shady area of the town. Once she saw the opportunity she stabbed the drunken fool without warning, leaving him dead and found the next morning. The beauty of this is nobody suspected a woman two heads shorter than the victim to do such a gruesome act, so she was never uncovered for the crime. Abruptly after that she moved to Holbrook, to start anew. She knew Joel would've wanted that for her. Though choices for women back then were quite contained, she easily got a job working at a saloon for the next decade, one of the many such jobs back then specifically aimed for women.
