I am as bad as the worst, but, thank God, I am as good as the best.
A DESTRUCTIVE STORM
NAME Kelly Hatton
NICKNAME N/A
ROLE The Conductor
AGE 28
GENDER Male
SEXUALITY Heterosexual
BIRTHPLACE Belfast, Ireland
IS A PERFECT INVITATION
APPEARANCE Standing at 5'9" and weighing only around 140 lbs., Mr. Hatton isn't exactly the largest when it comes to stature. Despite this, however, the upright way in which he holds himself and the perpetually stern expression that weighs upon his brow grant him the presence of one twice his size. He is an undoubtably attractive man - though this fact seems to escape him - with a heart-shaped face and high, prominent cheekbones. His hair, closely shaved on the sides and longer at the top, is a dark brown color. The most striking of his features is a pair of ice blue eyes, able to captivate any who look into them. In general, Kelly dresses fairly well, donning dark-colored suits that, although not entirely expensive, are quite dapper in appearance.
FOR A LONELY SOUL
PERSONA Stern and serious above all else, Kelly Hatton is the type of man to make no nonsense, and, in effect, isn't very keen on taking any of it, either. Most who know him see him as a very hard worker, a man who never stops moving, save for when he is lost in thought, which happens quite often. Skilled at his trade, he always has music on the mind, even, if the notes that fall from his lips in the dead of night are of any indication, while he sleeps. The members of his band would describe him as strict but fair, a hardened leader who is willing to give his all for his companions as long as they are willing to do the same in return. Not one for idle chatter, he tends to isolate himself in a crowded room, only speaking when spoken to. He is an old-fashioned young man with the spirit of one well beyond his years, believing strongly in fairness (you reap what you sow and all that) and the responsibility of the strong to look after the weak. He is also God-fearing and fairly superstitious.
Though currently doing what he loves, Kelly is strangely unhappy. More often than not, he has a troubled look about him, born from a perpetual feeling of emptiness that he cannot seem to shake or identify. Anxiety plagues him constantly, and he often forgets to do such things as eat and even sleep. He is his own biggest critic, constantly pushing himself to do better so as to avoid failure, and this may contribute to his tendency to appear harsh at first glance.
LIKES Hard workers Outstanding performances Studying and composing music Playing cards Dancing Good gin
DISLIKES Incompetent people Tedious conversations Sailing (he has a tendency to get seasick) Having his thoughts interrupted Dreary weather
FEARS Failure Dying unhappy Superstitions
THOUGHTS Possessing a general hatred of sailing in general, he is not exactly thrilled. His companions' constant joking about the fate of the band on Titanic, paired with his superstitious nature, isn't helping matters either.
AND A BROKEN MAN
BIO
Kelly Hatton was born on the 8th of September, 1894 in the city of Belfast, Ireland. The son of a farmer and his schoolteacher wife, his wasn't exactly the wealthiest of families, but a happier one you would never have seen. One of his fondest memories is of being a young boy, doing his schoolwork at the kitchen table while his mother sang in a voice as lovely as a songbird's. This, potentially, is what began his early interest in music. His father, on another note, taught him the value of hard work through asking for his daily assistance in maintaining the farm on which they lived.
Following Kelly's completion of secondary school, the Hatton family hardly possessed the funding to pay for college. However, they did scrape together enough money to contribute to their son's interest in music by paying for a brief internship with a local composer, during which time he built up as much knowledge as possible on the subject, and soon, at the age of barely twenty-one, he stepped out on his own and began to make a name for himself throughout the city of Belfast. He had never been happier.
Unfortunately, this happiness, though profound, was short-lived. In 1818, with the start of the Irish War for Independence, Kelly saw the comfortable lifestyle that he had worked so hard to achieve crash down at his feet. Knowing that he was not fit for war, and in fear that he would be forced to take up arms, he used what little money he had made from his music over the prior three years to secure a place on a ship heading for America. This blatant show of cowardice imparted on him a sense of guilt that still follows him to this day.
But a year after arriving in America, things were beginning to look up again. Though generally gloomy and far from home in the great expanse of New York City, Kelly, who had previously been taking on a series of odd jobs just to get by, had the fortune of meeting up with a band of eight in need of a skilled conductor. Though doubtful at first of the young Irishman's skills, the band's members soon came to realize that he was a force to be reckoned with, and their respect for him quickly grew. That same year, he came to know a young woman named Rebecca, with whom he was instantly enamoured. They were married within the following year. This unfortunately, was when his once loving companion began to show her true colors. Where there had once been kindness and support, there was now incessant nagging and a need for control, the makings of a women who had put on a careful facade in hopes of gaining a spouse. Once again, Kelly's mood took a turn for the worse as his home life became plagued with the fear of his awful wife, and soon he was doing all manner of things just for the sake of appeasing her. A need to escape from this most poisonous of environments is half the reason why he accepted the chance to travel on the Oedipus in the first place.
@Starboy Ooooh would you help me think of one? still a bit uncertain as juggling with a lot of RPs right now but would like to see how far this could go...Thanks so much!
Of course! You could possibly be a stowaway (someone who's not on the best terms with the law right now and stowed away on the ship to escape), the cook, the first mate, an orphan (who is sailing to a different country to live with family overseas), the pianist who plays at dinner, an artist who is hoping to find inspiration during the voyage, a member of the band, or really anything. Hope one of these sounds alright to you.
@Metadude Seems really interesting...if I join will there be a role added for me or am I a passenger?
If you can think of a role that you'd like to add in, I'll certainly put it into the description for you and you can use that. :) I could also help you think of one, if needed, or you could play a passenger, if you'd like. Also, don't worry about the tag, happens to the best of us. XD
clutch moment? Is the Captain part still available? (:
I'm pretty sure it has already been spoken for, unfortunately, BUT I'd hate not to have you on board with us, so we can come up with another role to add in, if you'd like? :)
