Sterling / Jotunn Draugr (part 1)
That was the third time the front door had been slammed shut in the last hour. Fallon knew the sound well. While her brothers no longer lived in the house with Fallon and their parents, at least one of the Cassidy clan could be found lounging about at any time of the day. One would think they didn’t have anything better to do than to keep an eye on Fallon…
In truth Fallon suspected her older brothers enjoyed seeing all that their hard work had paid for, their aging father able to sit comfortably by a fire place, their mother with iron gray hair comfortably shuffling about her kitchen. Also, having all the Cassidy’s under one roof had a nostalgic feel of their childhood, the sister couldn’t fault her brothers for that.
However, that slamming door boded no relaxed family reunion, but something more. Trouble.
Fallon glanced to her door which was cracked. She could hear voices floating up the stairs, lowered in an attempt at secrecy but the harsher tones of anger making the words carry.
“—Thinks he can distribute in our region—“
“—Don’t know where you heard—“
“Stupid cunt!”
“Shut your fuckin’ mouth”
Fallon looked away from the door and back to her mirror to make sure one red glossy curl was perfectly in place, before straightening back her shoulders and taking in her appearance. Fashionable as ever, the black dress, in the most current style (known as a flapper) draped across her chest before falling down in a straight line to touch the tops of her knees just so. The neck line was a bit low (not for Fallon but she was sure at least one of her brothers would have something to say about it) but the youngest Cassidy loved the outfit. So modern!
Opening her door, it creaked slightly and the voices hushed below. Sauntering down the stairs Fallon grinned as she came upon her somber-looking brothers.
“Some hello I get…” She quipped, glancing between Keiran, Desmond and Cullen to judge their moods. How serious was this business matter?
"Ah thunderin' Jesus. Sorry sis, were you trying to sleep?" Cullen inquired, thoughtfully, hoisting himself up off the couch.
Fallon felt her arched brows creeping higher onto her forehead, hand coming to plant itself on her hip.
"Does this look like a nightgown to you?" She quipped, flipping her spare hand to take in her dress, which would easily be considered a 'party dress'.
With a broad smile, the red-head stepped closer to her brother in greeting.
"What were you lads yelling about any how?" She wanted to know, catching the glance between Desmond and Keiran before the eldest shrugged.
"Business." Was his tart reply.
"Cullen?" Fallon asked, turning to see if he might give her a straight answer.
"Ah sis", Cullen sighed. "You remember Jimmy McFinnegan, right?"
"Of course", Fallon said.
"Well, he swears that he spotted a bunch of greaseballs, selling booze in our part of town. And it adds up too. Sales have been down all month. They've gotta be under-cutting us, and selling watered-down shit at a lower price."
"Cullen." Keiran cut in, his tone warning. His sisters sweet face was sharpening with interest.
"Watered down? Who would want to buy that?" Fallon wanted to know, pointedly ignoring Keiran and his warnings.
"Fuckin' lazy sleeze ball --"
"Desmond." Keiran cut Desmond off abruptly.
"Alright boys", Cullen again sighed, trying to keep the mood as calm as he could. "Look Fallon, you don't need to worry about this. They're scamming our customers. Might even be threatening them, for all we know. We're just gonna have to straigten 'em out, and send 'em back to their side'a town. These two are just letting their anger out. It'll be sorted in a day or two."
With that, Cullen limped a bit closer, and placed a protective hand on his sister's shoulder.
"Now anyway, you're lookin' fukin' gorgeous. Where are ya off to for tonight? Need a bodyguard or two? I wouldn't want some filthy greaser to get the wrong idea about my sister."
Fallon's face fell slightly. Not at being shut out of the conversation or the full story. Her brothers had never shared what it was exactly went on in their business, and she never expected them to.
But with Cullen's kind words (and the look Desmond gave her which said perhaps she looked too good) the Cassidy sister realized they had forgotten their promise.
"But...Cullen..." she started as Keiran turned to go into the kitchen, as he typically did in search for a meal.
"You three said you'd take me to that new band tonight..." She gestured to her beautiful dress, specially bought for this occasion.
They must have forgotten in the midst of dealing with the distribution mishap.
