They would fill it out on the genuine, but fearful, hope that it was a real application. Somewhere they might find actual acceptance. Maybe they do recognize their mental faculties are above the norm, but play dumb (relative to themselves) or a little nuts to 'fit in'... even though they might be a little eccentric.

Ok, I know of myself and at least one other that are interested in this. I balked at first with all the information in the first few posts. I was worried about rigidity more than anything.

I do have some questions though.

In the letter sample from the Headmaster to the character in question, it only mentioned 'gifted'. He never said mutants. If mutants and mutant types are being persecuted (and the one I have in mind was, by his own family even) ... How likely do you think it's going to be that this kid (who's got a genius level intelligence, a side effect of his powers) will divulge them to a 'Prestigious' academy? A new age of education is one thing, but with the fear and prejudice against mutant-kind in the world, I think it unlikely that this would be openly mentioned in a formal application. Something that could be subpena'd by a court, or collected as intelligence by a military force.

The original version of this character (and the current version) would worry that this wasn't a disguised 'roundup' attempt. So, according to the verbiage of the acceptance letter, what would prompt him/her to divulge that they have any powers at all?

This particular character would also wonder why he/she got the application in the first place. They don't see themselves as special, or unique (outside of their abilities which they keep hidden as much as possible). They don't see themselves as 'gifted' and would look at the application as suspect. This might well come through in the application. He might not apply certain verbiage which would render his app in a more positive light. Or he could even possibly fill it out in a sloppy or lazy way. This could be looked at as though he feels that it's not serious, not a challenge, and/or that it's fake. Or that his chances of getting in are minimal. (Considering he or she didn't complete high school, and dropped out.) And as he considers himself average (even though he's actually far from it), I'm sure this would show in his application (even if it were to be misleading, unless someone took a very close look, or perhaps used a psychic ability such as Psychometry on it)

This world view may also be a side effect of Depression. (A side thought)

And depending on which version (if they were on the run, homeless, etc) they'd wonder how they'd been found, and/or noticed.

Hey no, don't apologize. I know exactly what you're going through and dealing with. I've had every one of those kinds of experiences. I totally understand. I've also taken long breaks, and questioned why I do it, quite a bit. It's one reason why I haven't really attempted to set up another game and run it in quite some time.

Now I'm conflicted though on whether I want to run one of my favorite characters, who never gets much play time... or work on something new.
@The Mad Hatter - Oh no, that's cool. I just get a little twitchy when GM's start saying stuff like "Nothing OP" and either don't define it, or don't have a sort of system of reasonable limitations, or do's and don'ts. I've had a GM who wanted his character to be the coolest, the most shiny, and only he was allowed to do the coolest stuff, his character he ran with the group had to be the one to save the day, proressed the fastest, and couldn't be outclassed. I've had another GM shut me down because I got funky with working physics theories (stuff proven over and over again, a solid tested hypothesis). I've had another GM kill off a character of mine because I had a better, more workable idea and it didn't march to the beat of their drum.

It's nothing personal. I just wanted to what you had in mind. The more I understand the constraints (or lack of them) of the RP environment, the better. Now that I know what you have in mind, I'm happy with it. ^_^

I really like the answer by the way. I think it's open, flexible, but with enough structure that it allows people to do what they want, but is governed by group consensus rather than one individual.

I need to get to work on drafting up my character.
I'm fine. Just explaining the circumstances of certain past events, as a continued pattern. It's not easy to get me into an emotional state.
I trust that you are able to make balanced characters and that I do not have to tell you not to make them over powered. I also trust that you know not to god-mod, metagame or whatever without me having to say so.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them; there are no stupid questions, only bad answers.

You do realize that over-powered is subjective, right?

We're talking about people that have the potential to move cities with their minds, or rip them apart, atom by atom. Others will only ever die of old age, and that will take centuries. They are effectively immortal, which some would consider OP to begin with. I've seen other characters bring down buildings around other characters, and the one that had the building collapse around them (huge falling pieces of concerete and I-beams, massive girders and all) survive with maybe a broken arm. (It was clever, really.) So... What is your limit or considering of OP? the other thing is, something that might be only minimally helpful or powerful in one player's hands a GM might consider OP in the hands of another.

Or are we talking something like this?

Or maybe Superman wielding Mjolnir

Just sayin'. Those are gross examples... but In a world very similar (ie: ripped off) of X-men... where do you draw the line?
Actually I do understand. I live in an area that I don't have any table-top pen and paper gaming people. I know a few that play, and are very into it, but I don't have a solid, organized way to get things moving. Something like Roll20 is much more ideal these days.

However, the timeslot is a real pain. Where I live, is -6:00 GMT, which means that your gametime would start at 4 AM. 5 AM in the East coast here in the States. 2 AM in Pacific/West Coast time. Most Americans are in bed at that time. Now, for people in say the UK, that's not as bad, though it would be in the morning there, and might not be ideal for those that are going to school or are working a 9-5 job.

Were it not for the timeslot I might be interested.

Edit: I got my math wrong
2 pm (@ +8 GMT)... That means it's 6 AM GMT. @ -6 GMT (Central Time in America) that means it's Midnight. Doable, but I dunno how many people would be on for six hours at that time.
@Tearstone: Hai. You planning on quitting thsi one too after a while? *bricked* xD

Keep that attitude up and I might.

I'm still waiting to see if I want to join this. For me, it's often better if I just leave, rather than get into it with other players or GM's when they start leaving a bad taste. (In this case it was a player). It also just kills any drive or desire to be in the RP. It's a sign of greater conflicts and problems to come in the OOC, and I don't need to turn into A$$hole-asaurus Rex, which I can do.

Other times I get distracted, but have the intention of continuing with what I was originally doing. However, it turns out that I don't come back like I thought I would. Sometimes, it turns out to not be as fun/interesting as I thought it would be. Sometimes it's a combination of factors. #Piscesproblems #INTJProblems
