About Me
I am a second year undergraduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology which, as the name would suggest, is in Rochester, New York. I am studying Software Engineering – essentially, programming plus all of the processes, paperwork, etc. that I'll be doing in the real world. I have been programming in some capacity since I was eight, and once I discovered programming I simply never stopped writing code. Some of that code I've written was for this very website, and hopefully there will be a fair bit more of that in the near future.
I discovered programming in a game called ROBLOX, and coincidentally that is also where I first discovered roleplaying. One day I was exploring the forums, and noticed a roleplaying section. Curious, I took a look and I was instantly hooked. The content was mostly in the Free RP level, with a small amount of Casual tier games, but at the time even that was high quality content to me. Over the years my interest in the game faded, and although I continued programming after ultimately leaving the community, I did not continue roleplaying.
Years later, I gradually started wanting to get back into roleplaying. I began googling around, and after looking at a few different websites I finally decided that the Guild seemed to be the best of them all. I made an account on December 13, 2014, and started jumping into some games; I quickly decided on sticking to mostly High Casual, but eventually moved more towards Advanced as I realized that most of the games I was in were easily at that level anyway. This was right around the time that Mahz was working on rebuilding the website from the ground up, and after chatting with him for a while in the IRC during some site downtime I decided that I wanted to help.
I ultimately didn't contribute too much, but nevertheless I was the first (and so far, only) non-anonymous user to help Mahz with developing the website. As a reward, after he implemented the trophy system I was awarded the special Benevolent Cyberpunk trophy, which gives me a special userbit that looks like this:
After roughly a year and a half of being here, life started getting in the way more and more, and my activity became increasingly infrequent. Eventually, a little after the two year mark, I became completely inactive; I was in my senior year of high school, neck deep in college plans, and didn't have time for it anymore. I'd log in every now and then to check if I had missed anything, but until quite recently never stayed. I am back now, though, and hopefully I'm here to stay. I plan on getting back into roleplaying in the near future, and I also plan on starting to help out with the website once more. I've learned so much since when I first saw the code running the Guild, and hopefully I'll be significantly more helpful than I was back then!
I will have to refer you to my sig in response.
If I come off as passive aggressive then I apologize, but to me this definitely is a circlejerk. Besides the feedback, it is essentially three pages of "I hate ratings".
But at any rate, take what I say as just that; it certainly isn't a site-wide opinion, nor an official one. Just mine.
Okay, here's the only thing I can think of to settle this.
It has been suggested that a "hide ratings" setting be implemented. Since you won't be changing your stance on the matter, I will add it one I get out of bed and submit a pull request. If Mahz doesn't accept it by the time he addresses your dismay himself, there is nothing anyone can do about it. I'd like this to be the end of the discussion until Mahz addresses it, because as mentioned it has gone on for multiple pages and is now a circlejerk. As also mentioned, please reserve any extreme decisions (I.e quitting) until the issue has been addressed.
However, I am just a user, not a mod- so if you want to continue your circlejerk, then feel free, but know this:
EDIT: I wrote this half-asleep, in bed on my phone. Essentially, everyone knows that many dislike the ratings, so there really is no need to continue repeating this. Additionally, Mahz requested a few pages back for you to give it a week, and imo this isn't too much to ask.
In my opinion, an optional rating system is definitely not a big change. To me, a big change is something that would radically change the forum, and/or couldn't possibly be ignored. Ratings don't really change anything, and someone can simply not use them if they prefer not to.
I do agree with putting a poll up for larger, potentially controversial features, though.
I need a fourth rating option, and I need it to be silly.
Maybe a option?
If you do, I will probably click that on every single post just to troll you guys. You have been warned.
And your rating count will be reset to 0, making it all a waste of time in the end
It's not the rating counts on my profile that matter (see previous post for reasoning). But simply the joy that every post will have a dancing banana on it.
I mean, those will all be reset. No gaming the system, or else nobody will be able to enjoy your dancing bananas
Alice had been the very first person to put her name into the cup. With arrogant confidence, she was certain that her name would be chosen from the rest. Now, butterflies in her stomach confirmed that the Headmistress had indeed called her name. Without a moment's delay, she stood and gracefully strode across the hall, and into the back room.
Already inside was a representative of the Ministry of Magic, the Hogwarts headmaster, and the Hogwarts champion, Anthony Stuart. She extended a hand to the representative. "'Ello," she greeted.
Turning to the Headmaster of Hogwarts, she did the same. "'Ello, pruvezzor," she said with a confident smile, knowing full well that they were all likely to be inwardly laughing at her accent.
Alice eyed Anthony up and down suspiciously, but said nothing. Instead, she leaned against the wall, facing the door, waiting for the Durmstrang Champion. When she came in, Alice stepped forward and offered her hand, the situation being too formal for faire la bise. "'Ello, ah... Beatrice?" she asked, having been unable to hear her name being called over the cheering and foot stomping.
Kyle Messor
"Definitely not to be!" Kyle called to Jamie as he left, genuinely surprised that that was all Jamie had to say... for now.
Finished with his breakfast, Kyle stood up and left, heading for his first class. As he walked out, he quietly withdrew back into his shell – only with his few friends did he act, well, normal. Otherwise, he was the kid who sat in the back of the room, only speaking when spoken to and socializing as little as possible. He knew it isn't how he should be, how he was before... everything changed. But what can he do? When you see some of the things that he sees, you wouldn't want to have friends either, and risk them vanishing from his life, never to be seen again. To collect the soul of someone you care about... that's something Kyle doesn't ever want to do again.
