About Me
I am a second year undergraduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology which, as the name would suggest, is in Rochester, New York. I am studying Software Engineering – essentially, programming plus all of the processes, paperwork, etc. that I'll be doing in the real world. I have been programming in some capacity since I was eight, and once I discovered programming I simply never stopped writing code. Some of that code I've written was for this very website, and hopefully there will be a fair bit more of that in the near future.
I discovered programming in a game called ROBLOX, and coincidentally that is also where I first discovered roleplaying. One day I was exploring the forums, and noticed a roleplaying section. Curious, I took a look and I was instantly hooked. The content was mostly in the Free RP level, with a small amount of Casual tier games, but at the time even that was high quality content to me. Over the years my interest in the game faded, and although I continued programming after ultimately leaving the community, I did not continue roleplaying.
Years later, I gradually started wanting to get back into roleplaying. I began googling around, and after looking at a few different websites I finally decided that the Guild seemed to be the best of them all. I made an account on December 13, 2014, and started jumping into some games; I quickly decided on sticking to mostly High Casual, but eventually moved more towards Advanced as I realized that most of the games I was in were easily at that level anyway. This was right around the time that Mahz was working on rebuilding the website from the ground up, and after chatting with him for a while in the IRC during some site downtime I decided that I wanted to help.
I ultimately didn't contribute too much, but nevertheless I was the first (and so far, only) non-anonymous user to help Mahz with developing the website. As a reward, after he implemented the trophy system I was awarded the special Benevolent Cyberpunk trophy, which gives me a special userbit that looks like this:
After roughly a year and a half of being here, life started getting in the way more and more, and my activity became increasingly infrequent. Eventually, a little after the two year mark, I became completely inactive; I was in my senior year of high school, neck deep in college plans, and didn't have time for it anymore. I'd log in every now and then to check if I had missed anything, but until quite recently never stayed. I am back now, though, and hopefully I'm here to stay. I plan on getting back into roleplaying in the near future, and I also plan on starting to help out with the website once more. I've learned so much since when I first saw the code running the Guild, and hopefully I'll be significantly more helpful than I was back then!

Nice intuition, plausible enough to make me have another look at the code. But I can confirm that it shouldn't be doing this according to the docs.
Source code: https://github.com/danneu/guild/blob/49d5cedbdc621cda3a345022bbb0080bb4a77bdc/server/avatar.js#L85image.resize(150, 200, '>')
I'll take another look if other people report an issue uploading exact-dimension avatars. I couldn't reproduce the issue myself.
My avatar is exact-dimensions and I had no trouble.
<Snipped quote by Mahz>
I've noticed it took a (relatively) long time for several people I roleplay with to notice this change and upload a new avatar. Some of them still haven't done so. You could argue that this means that some people don't really care about their avatars, but it can also be interpreted to mean that this implementation is too vague.
I'd think its mostly that they haven't noticed - the post itself is far more important than the metadata (especially in an RP) so it isn't unreasonable that they could have simply neglected the fact that their avatars are missing. Just a thought.
Or you can stop worrying about whether to use one topic or two, and just use an announcement on the home page itself like was initially suggested. A lot of people aren't going to pay attention to if there is a new post in the news section (especially when this thread is almost definitely going to hide the actual update thread as latest post). They will pay attention to a big announcement box in their face (such as when it said "guild is having difficulties etc" before the rewrite).
But I did just push up a change: The guild now resizes images and hosts them itself.
- Max avatar dimensions changed from 150x150 to 150x200 (150px wide, 200px tall)
- You can choose an image larger than 150x150 and the guild will resize it to 150x200 for you (maintaining aspect ratio)
- You must upload your old avatar manually to move it into the new system. In a week or so, I'll be removing all old avatars. If you go to your "Edit Avatar" form, you'll be able to access your old avatar so that you can conveniently upload it into the new system.
- Performance boost on pages that display avatars since you use my fast host and I aggressively cache avatars.
Lemme know if you have an issue. I also ask that you don't try to break the upload system by selecting non-images or massive images. It's kinda fragile.
Okay thanks for quelling my concern! ^^
Also one more thing:
Say I want to copy/paste a CS but when I paste it, it loses its formatting, so if it had boldness, line breaks, eat, it comes a big blob of text that I need to tweak myself (so much work!). Is this supposed to happen? Because I thought a few days ago, you could copy/paste and formatting would remain. (unless of course you paste as plain text...)
Click on 'View Raw' in the top right, and copy the CS from there. That way, all the formatting is already done for you.
I send an Etherpad (new, fancier name should be invented) invitation to @Mahz and @TheMaster99.
Collabinator 6000.
On topic, I agree with your description of what the system should be like.
But also, the 'GM' of the Collabinator 6000 should be able to preview, to check the BBCode/admire/etc.
I definitely do not intend to be derisive, I only think that something that can simply be scrolled past isn't worth three pages of people repeatedly saying they do not like it, even though everyone is already very aware of their view, including Mahz, who chose to implement it regardless of the fact that several of you have made it very clear even before it was implemented that you don't approve. Mahz asked that you all give it a week, and I personally don't see why that is such a hard thing to ask.
The guild is definitely not an absolute tyranny - I won't speak for Mahz (although I can only assume he'd agree on this), but I have no intention of shutting down anyone. Although I totally disagree (albeit I suppose I do see where you're coming from in this complaint), I'm finishing up an opt-out setting. I just need to sort out some seemingly unrelated kinks so I can make sure it actually works, then I'll submit the pull request. If Mahz gets distracted by work/other things and doesn't get around to the pull request for a while (or even rejects it, which would surprise me unless he happens to surrender and remove the ratings), there isn't anything I can do about that.
Lastly, if any of you feel that I am being derisive, passive-aggressive, condescending, etc. in the future, please let me know. Most likely I don't intend to be, and simply worded my statements poorly.
