About Me

I am a second year undergraduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology which, as the name would suggest, is in Rochester, New York. I am studying Software Engineering – essentially, programming plus all of the processes, paperwork, etc. that I'll be doing in the real world. I have been programming in some capacity since I was eight, and once I discovered programming I simply never stopped writing code. Some of that code I've written was for this very website, and hopefully there will be a fair bit more of that in the near future.

I discovered programming in a game called ROBLOX, and coincidentally that is also where I first discovered roleplaying. One day I was exploring the forums, and noticed a roleplaying section. Curious, I took a look and I was instantly hooked. The content was mostly in the Free RP level, with a small amount of Casual tier games, but at the time even that was high quality content to me. Over the years my interest in the game faded, and although I continued programming after ultimately leaving the community, I did not continue roleplaying.

Years later, I gradually started wanting to get back into roleplaying. I began googling around, and after looking at a few different websites I finally decided that the Guild seemed to be the best of them all. I made an account on December 13, 2014, and started jumping into some games; I quickly decided on sticking to mostly High Casual, but eventually moved more towards Advanced as I realized that most of the games I was in were easily at that level anyway. This was right around the time that Mahz was working on rebuilding the website from the ground up, and after chatting with him for a while in the IRC during some site downtime I decided that I wanted to help.

I ultimately didn't contribute too much, but nevertheless I was the first (and so far, only) non-anonymous user to help Mahz with developing the website. As a reward, after he implemented the trophy system I was awarded the special Benevolent Cyberpunk trophy, which gives me a special userbit that looks like this:

After roughly a year and a half of being here, life started getting in the way more and more, and my activity became increasingly infrequent. Eventually, a little after the two year mark, I became completely inactive; I was in my senior year of high school, neck deep in college plans, and didn't have time for it anymore. I'd log in every now and then to check if I had missed anything, but until quite recently never stayed. I am back now, though, and hopefully I'm here to stay. I plan on getting back into roleplaying in the near future, and I also plan on starting to help out with the website once more. I've learned so much since when I first saw the code running the Guild, and hopefully I'll be significantly more helpful than I was back then!

Tristan nodded at the Japanese captain. "These solar panels. How strong are they, exactly? They won't be enough for everyone to have power, but if you are willing to lend them for the duration of your stay, they could be very useful as a start." He turned to the mechanic, with further inspiration. "And perhaps we could gather some car batteries? We can start to charge them with the solar panels, and then we'd have some stored electricity. It won't be too much, but it'd be hugely beneficial, especially if we need to do something during the night, when we can't rely on solar power."

There's a proper electrician here, I think. We could probably manage to get something set up – what am I thinking? We probably won't have to set anything up. This is a school, they will likely have a back-up generator in the basement. "Actually, now that I think about it we should check the basement while we're clearing. This place may have a back-up generator, and that would suffice for now."
Tristan Locastro

Tristan had been listening, rather than talking, while the rest discussed what their next step should be. To establish a chain of command, or to secure the facility? This man at the head of the table, he'd clearly like to be in charge, he thought. But that is unacceptable. No one person should have more power than anyone else, but not everyone can be trusted with power, either. Alas, he decided, security is more important at this stage.

Leaning back in his chair, Tristan pulled out a pen and began to slowly, subconsciously click it. "Establishing a government, a set of laws? Yeah, that's important. But that will not happen immediately – no, I can assure you that will be a long, possibly heated debate. And if, during that time, a horde of dead swarmed the room? Where would we be then?" Tristan looked everyone in the eye, in turn. "Feel free to disagree with me, but I think we can trust each other enough to not do anything rash. We can, and should, make sure that this place is secure, perhaps gather what supplies we can find, without causing trouble. Unless," he paused for emphasis, "any of you disagree and think we will become a pack of rabid dogs the moment we step out of this room?"

Tristan twirled his pen in his fingers, lazily. This place really needs power, he inwardly moaned. If I could just plug my laptop in... oh, the things I could do...
Name:
Tristan Locastro
Appearance:

Age:
30
Gender:
Male
Occupation:
Software Engineer
Hobbies:
Software, game, and web developing – basically, he loves computers. He is also an apt, self-taught electrician. He isn't certified and certainly isn't a master, but anything is better than nothing, is it not?
Values:
Logic, order, and fairness are the most important things to him. Without logic, order will never be achieved; without order, civilization will crumble into chaos. And of course, what is the point of having society at all if that society isn't fair to its population?
Goal:
Get a solar powered (or similar) power grid operational, and for it to reliably work with minimal issues. Additionally, he would love to get a republic going – it is foolish to let the gullible, unintelligent masses vote directly on important matters, and it is suicide to trust a single person with total control. A group of trustworthy, competent men (or women) voted into power by the masses, however, is good.
Associated NPCs:
N/A
History:
Tristan is a man who doesn't always voice his opinion; if he doesn't have an adequate understanding on the subject, or simply has nothing of note to add, then he won't. When he does weigh in, however, he is logical, and thinks through what he says carefully. His strong sense of logic is probably what led him to become a software engineer. He was in the office working as usual, when suddenly his life flipped upside down: everyone in the office was dead, and when he got home, so was his family. Well, until they got back up and tried to eat him, that is. Fortunately, his wife went for the dog first (poor thing), allowing him time to grab the gun from his safe and escape. He decided it'd be a good idea to go somewhere relatively remote – less people, less dead bodies trying to eat his brain. He joined a group of refugees and, well, here they are.

That only started when you reverted the mobile changes, I believe. Thanks for the fix, by the way.

Font size seems incredibly inconsistent on mobile now.
[Edit by Mahz: Fixed link] Uploading images definitely doesn't work well on mobile. I'll try to sort the link out when I can.

Generally (perhaps overly so), iOS is predominant in the US and Android is predominant in Europe. Not sure where people are but that could possibly be the root of the differences. Otherwise, it'd be a regional thing which would take far too much effort to worry about. Neighborhood A likes Android, B likes iOS, C are Blackberry hipsters, D are elderly people... etc. EDIT: Ninja'd But Android is far ahead in Europe as well, not just in Asia.
So it does seem that only in America will hordes of people line up for days to pay the iPhone premium.

@LegendBegins A large number of mobile users, specifically. Obviously the only platforms on which Safari exists are iOS and OS X. On OS X, the mass majority of people will use a third-party browser, leaving iOS, where most people won't care enough to get a third-party browser. Like it or not iOS will most likely be the predominant mobile platform, however I'm not convinced that the number of people using mobile on the guild is so significant that there will be much of a problem.

<Snipped quote> The post scrolls fine for me when swiped (desktop version) - in my experience, catching a scrollbar is a lot trickier...
It could very well just be that Samsung's browser is a bit derpy in regards to scrolling individual forms, resulting in both my sig problem and the post problem. I'll try a third party browser and report back. EDIT: The issue was in fact due to Samsung's browser. Firefox is allowing me to scroll as desired.

One problem with mobile that I've been noticing is that signatures are still scrollable, even though they don't have a scrollbar. This might be behavior specific to my device, but when I am scrolling through the page and happen to scroll on the sig it scrolls that instead. Is it possible to make the sig area enforce the px limit itself and never contain more than the 200px/whatever it is that is allowed? ALSO: The post writing form needs to be able to scroll. It can be scrolled, but it is clunky and not easy to do. Could a scrollbar be added when necessary on small devices? I'm not sure it'll fix the issue but it wouldn't hurt.

There's too many out there who don't bother to click preview before posting. After all, who actually believe they themselves could possibly make a mistake?
How dare you suggest such treachery! Make a mistake?! I defy you sir to find a single occasion of such! [/InternetToughGuy]
