Toothless watched the girl smooth out her hair, making herself ’presentable’ in the human sense of the word. He’d lived around their kind long enough to know appearances mattered when one was trying to impress the other- that was after an eye had already been caught, usually by one’s skills on the field. Toothless wasn’t sure if it was Astrid’s beauty or strength that originally caught Hiccup’s attention. Her violence, to Toothless, seemed like it should have been a turn off since it obviously physically hurt his rider when he was younger but he’d always been treated as the lesser individual by his peers so perhaps he just saw nothing wrong with it. A Viking show of affection… and to think she had just begun to get softer. But this girl seemed very nice. Toothless was curious to see how he would handle someone so unviking like.
A slight shift in expression as she approached and the baby clambered out of his lap to share some of that ’affection’ with Castiel. Toothless thought he might have saw something in his gaze, a sort warmth reserved for those closest to him. Hiccup set his hands against his knees as Castiel rubbed her face against the hatchling‘s. He’d never seen another human behave around a dragon in this manner. Aside from his mother who had twenty years to get close to them. The other Vikings warmed up slowly but he could feel the tension between their two races now and again- stronger after that alpha had so easily turned their allies against them. That would take time to mend. She was close to dragons though, she cared about them like equals. He could see that in her actions, in her gaze.
He felt Toothless’ gaze on him but paid it no mind. Soon after the hatchlings were jumping all over their father anyhow and he found himself grinning broadly. “Come on now, that’s no fair is it buddy? They’re gaining up on you.” He rose to his feet to help but Toothless lowered down and rolled them off, pinning them beneath one wing with a smug expression of an easy victory. Hiccup smirked in response and was about to say more when Castel spoke up. “Names? Uh…”
Toothless gave him a gummy smile and Hiccup scoffed a bit in amusement because it was him that named both the older dragons currently present. “Blizzard.” He said with a jerk of his thumb at the white one whose feisty attitude and coloration earned him that title. “Dusk.” He said of the gray one before glancing at the last “back in my village… the more frightening the name the better. To scare off the ‘gnomes’ and ‘trolls’, don’t know if that’s really a concern here though. They’re dragons.” He joked before finishing thinking. “How about charcoal?” Though black and little more when used to draw it could make something beautiful so though this last one was mostly black there was still more to it.
