@Genkai Is this full? If not, I'd like to drop interest in a female character.
Going to express preliminary interest but, uh, where do I go from there @The Harbinger of Ferocity
Aedre Charbonnet

— Mesalon City Gym —

Aedre lit up at Amber’s suggestion. Comparing Decus’ behavior with that of Alma’s would yield valuable insight into Honedge, if not ghost-types in general. The type differences might prove a bit tricky to factor out, but with some reading up Aedre was sure she’d be able to figure it out. How the two ghost-types would act in each others’ company, though, was uncertain—a thrilling uncertainty—and Aedre couldn’t wait to see, but…

Aedre exhaled. She was getting ahead of herself again. There were lots of things to work on with Decus before she started pushing him into uncomfortable situations. For now, she’d have to settle for patience.

“I’ll do my best to keep up with her,” Aedre said, meeting Alma’s eyes with a hesitant smile. The Sableye had sharp claws, but the chair was just a mistake… right?

Aedre’s eyes widened at Amber’s proposal. A sparring match—now? Here? She looked around uncertainly, eyes bouncing between her team and Amber’s. The uncertainty of the outcome made Aedre nervous, and the anxiety welling up around the entire situation made refusal a tantalizing option. But, as her eyes settled on Little, Aedre realized it didn’t really take that much thought. It was a no-risks match, and she should see it as an opportunity, not a risk.

“Okay. Let’s do it,” Aedre said with a smile.

Outside the Pokemon Center, the trainers found an empty patch of dusty land and quickly designated their mock battlefield. The terms were simple: three-on-three, may both partiesreach the Pokemon Center swiftly after the battle.

“Good luck! But don’t go easy on me!” Aedre shouted with a grin. Underestimating her just because she didn’t have much trainer experience was a bad idea because if she were to brag, she’d admit she was a quick study.

@luckyblackcat
If I could forget I made this mistake I'd be a happy camper. Thanks in advance!

Route 2: Wilted Woods || Late Night

Chandelure led the way out of the woods via a literal path of fire, doing the job so well Dei only spat one Ember the whole way. Thankfully, the Trevenant didn’t give chase, likely owing to the fact that they were trees. The Gourgeist did their best to float after Eryn and the Pokemon, bobbing disconcertingly in and out of existence as they leered from behind the retreating party, giving up chase only when the trees started to fill out with foliage again. Trace amounts of sheer powder scattered along the path Chandelure carved reminded Eryn that they were now in Dustox territory, but but-types would likely be easier for Chandelure to handle. Really, though, she was just trying to get away from the feeling of unease that didn’t seem to fade despite the increasing distance from the skeletal part of the woods.

When Chandelure stopped abruptly, turning around, Eryn followed suit in time to see their follower crash through the bushes. Her eyes widened when she recognized a human figure—and a familiar face: her own. The ‘other’ Eryn flashed her a smile, her Pokemon gathering around her: a Phantump and a Pumpkaboo, bouncing and drifting around the other Eryn. It took the other Eryn stepping out and pointing at her for Eryn to snap out of her stupor. She blinked, shaking her arms in an effort to calm down as she registered the cold sweat that she hadn’t even noticed building up.

“Right. Right.” Eryn breathed in and out a few times, trying to refocus. A trainer challenge—her second. Ignore the fact that the trainer was literally her, and Eryn was stellar.

“Right,” Eryn said again, exhaling one last time. “Dei, you ready?”

Eryn’s eyes flicked nervously to her doppelganger, whose smile was beginning to seem more twisted than familiar. Was her smile always so unsettling? Was that something Eryn had to work on?

Eryn shook her head. Nah, she was overthinking things. Worst case scenario… She looked at Chandelure, who’d stepped aside but still seemed equally concerned, and smiled.

“Don’t worry, I got this. You—other Eryn,” Eryn said, pointing at her doppelganger, “you’re going down.”

Her heart was threatening to burst out of her chest at this point, but Eryn grinned through it. “Dei, show ’em why we got out safely.”

Dei growled, smoke flowing out of his nostrils as he stepped forwards.

From behind, Eryn scanned over her double’s team, pulling out her Pokedex for good measure. A trio, like hers, with one ‘weak link’ in the form of a Cascoon to mirror Tula. Then two grass-ghost hybrids that she’d have Dei handle, if possible. She could do this. There was a clear strategy here, and she had the type advantage.

Her double’s grin stretched wider, if that were even possible. From her side, her Phantump drifted forwards, eyes glowing.

“No commands? Alright, fine.” Eryn gave Tula a squeeze, grin wavering. This wasn’t the time. “Dei, get ‘em.”

Dei rushed at the Phantump with a growl, jumping up to launch his first Ember of many.

As the foliage thinned out in favor of darkness deepened by fog instead of forest, Eryn felt a growing feeling of unease creep up on her. Goosebumps sprouted when the first hollow tunes flowed out of the distance, and her hair stood on end at every rustle of leaves. Even mental repetitions of “it’s ghost-types, it’s fine” failed to calm her at this point, soon she was practically squeezing Tula, whose hard carapace was the only thing between Eryn and a uncomfortably squished fish.

“Arceus,” Eryn breathed when Chandelure fireballed the first ghost-type, a cold shade of fear shaking her when she realized she hadn’t even seen it coming. But, now that she saw the first, it was as if her eyes had opened: all around her were ghost-types—trees and bushes opening their eyes in the dark to look down upon her as the fog helped manifest leering faces. Her heart pounded as she fumbled with her Pokedex, finally managing to open it and give names to the shadows: Gourgeist and Trevenant, ghost-grass hybrids.

Voices from behind Eryn caused her to spin around, eyes wide as she clutched Tula towards her with one hand. Children? In the woods? Her Pokedex, though, was not so easily fooled, changing to a picture of Phantump, the stump Pokemon, whose description included a note about ‘cries that imitate a human child’s.’ Similarly, her Pokedex was also a good mental defense against the ominous rustling in the darkness, identifying Pumpkaboo through the murky mist.

“Dei, Kylie,” Eryn said, motioning her Pokemon towards her. That strength in numbers would deter ghosts made sense in her head right now even though she’d never heard of it as an actual defense. Her heart rate was somewhat stable now that she’d identified the darkness, and she realized that she was likely in the presence of the ghosts she’d so sought to meet. Still, the unshakable unease still remained with her—an unease that these ghosts weren’t all that lay beyond the forest dominated by Dustox.

A shaky murmur from Chandelure set Eryn’s heart pounding again. Ghost-types were weak to ghost-types—that’d slipped her mind. Though Dei would be able to help a little in deterring any attackers, Eryn hesitated to set him on the task lest one of the wild ghost-types figured out that he was more of a bluff than an actual threat.

“We should get out of here. Let’s get out of here,” Eryn said, glancing at Chandelure. She’d seen the ghosts she’d wanted to see, but this part of the woods… She hated it. At least the part with Dustox and Beedrill was easy to wrap her mind around, being threatening in the way poison and paralysis were. This misty, ghost-infested part of the woods, though, held implicit threats she couldn’t put a finger on. All she knew was that her goosebumps weren’t caused by the cold.

“Let’s go,” Eryn repeated. “Dei and Kylie, help Chandelure clear a way with Ember and Astonish if needed.”

Better to cut her losses and come back another day, if at all.

Eryn decided to stay quiet as Laurinda spoke, figuring she’d already done enough damage to the woman’s opinion of her. Her eyes flickered to Delphox when the fire-type was mentioned, then back to Laurinda as she continued. So other trainers had come into the woods to find ghosts, but perhaps only just a few.

Wincing slightly at the implied label, Eryn waited until Laurinda finished, which was when the warden called out another Pokemon. It took Eryn a moment to place the ghostly flame as a Chandelure, and she only snapped out of her staring when Laurinda mentioned another wanderer. Had another trainer gotten lost in the woods? The look exchanged between Laurinda and her Delphox seemed to suggest it was something else—something worse—but Laurinda was off before Eryn could ask what she’d meant.

Instead of getting her questions answered by perhaps the only person able to answer them, she was left with Laurinda’s Pokemon and her own.

“Well, that was awkward. Thanks, by the way. I was—am—totally lost,” Eryn said to Laurinda's Pokemon, laughing lightly.

The Delphox turned to the Chandelure and started a dialogue that Eryn was unfortunately unable to decipher much of. That the Chandelure was put off by what the Delphox said was her only clue, and she could only assume it was a bad idea. A stir at her side reminded Eryn that her Pokemon were present. Present… and able to decipher the ongoing dialogue.

Eryn grinned, looking between Dei and Kylie expectantly. Dei’s ever-present frown remained, though he appeared more of a mix between concerned and uncertain than irritated, his tail flicking slightly as he looked between the two larger Pokemon. Kylie, on the other hand, transitioned from surprised to gleeful, almost mischievous so. Above her, her jaws clacked together gently.

“O-kay, so, what’d they say?” Eryn asked, rubbing her hands together.

Dei’s tail flicked as he looked to Kylie, whose full grin he clearly disapproved of. The two had a short dialogue themselves—each exchanging single lines—before Dei looked to Eryn.

“So, twenty questions.” Eryn frowned. “Is it about taking us out of the forest?”

Dei nodded.

“Did they… decide not to?”

Dei shook his head, his tail flicking towards the Chandelure before he pointed into the darkness of the woods.

“So, Chandelure’s agreed to take us out of the woods… or… into the woods?”

At Dei’s nod, Eryn grinned again. “Wowzers, with Chandelure escorting, we might actually be able to explore some.”

Eryn paused before she could get too ahead of herself. Was that the best idea? Other than the addition of a strong Pokemon guide, nothing had changed. Her Pokemon were still unprepared to take on the majority of the Infested Wood’s inhabitants, and she was still severely underequipped to heal them back up to health should they wind up in a scuffle.

Still, what were the chances she’d get another chance to explore the woods with a Pokemon as experienced as the Warden’s Chandelure so early in her trainer career? The opportunity was perhaps too good to pass up, and she figured that if Laurinda trusted her Chandelure to lead Eryn out of the woods, she trusted her Chandelure to be able to deal with whatever scary shadows lurked in the woods.

“I’d prefer to explore more if possible,” Eryn said, looking to the Chandelure.

Laurinda had, after all, entrusted Eryn’s safety to her own Pokemon, not to Eryn herself. Eryn was clearly not a candidate able to keep herself safe, and Eryn agreed with that judgement call, but now that she had someone able to ensure her safety the prospect of some more danger didn’t seem too terrible. And, after all, it seemed she had the Delphox’s approval in whatever antics she might try.

“That alright with you two?” Eryn asked with a conspiratorial grin, looking between the Chandelure and Delphox.

In her arms, Tula wriggled.

Eryn’s plan worked, which was satisfyingly fear-relieving. She’d managed to regain some control of the situation by getting away from the Butterfree, but when wingbeats came from ahead instead of behind, Eryn knew her control was still limited. The glow in this part of the woods was the Volbeat swarm

A warning hiss from Dei helped Eryn spot the residents of this part of the woods: Kakuna and Beedrill, Vespiquen and Combee—Eryn couldn’t tell whether her new situation was better or worse than her previous one. The Butterfree had threatened debilitating status effects, but Beedrill and Vespiquen were the bug-types no one wanted to come upon in the middle of the woods.

From above, a flurry of wingbeats and buzzing arose. Eryn clutched Tula tighter, eyes wide as the source of the sound loomed into view: A Volbeat zoomed past, identifiable only by its glow, then a entire pack of Dustox dropping powder even in flight.

“Kylie, get ready to Fairy Wind if it blows our way,” Eryn whispered.

A voice sounded from beside Eryn, causing her to whip around so fast her hair almost hit her in her face, tied up or not. It was a woman dressed in a flowing white and gold gown with intricate designs and draperies about her, branding her a stark contrast to the murken scenery around her. Behind her, a red-furred Pokemon—Delphox—leaned against a tree, looking into the flame at the end of the stick it held.

The woman, though, continued talking, proving herself exceedingly knowledgable about the goings-ons in the woods. So knowledgable, in face, that she gave herself away before she even said the word.

“Eryn,” Eryn said, introducing herself over the Magikarp in her arms, “and I don’t think it’d help my cause if I mentioned that I didn’t expect it to go like this.” She adjusted her grip on Tula so that the Magikarp was once again lying in her arms. “I heard in Pureplain that at night there are ghosts here, and I wanted to check it out. In hindsight, I probably should have trained a little more before heading in, but I figured that if I found you it’d be fine.”

Smiling sheepishly, Eryn ducked her head, one hand adjusting her cap. “Nice to meet you?”
