Sakura kind of hoped she would never see Gemma ever again after her embarrassing outburst at the gym. Her face was already red and she was struggling to make eye contact when they immediately began to poke holes in their story.

”U-um…” Sakura said, tapping her fingers together. Thankfully, Yuito came in with a save. And Roxas, too. Kind of. Sakura just giggled helplessly and rubbed the back of her head with a shrug.

”I’m a psychic!” She said, which wasn’t technically a lie. ”I’m ready to get down to business.” Sakura punched her palm. ”Peach-san needs our help.”

”I have Telekinesis. The rest is just regular old martial goodness.” When it was time to split off into time, Sakura ended up with Gemma. She really wanted a rematch.

They had a moment, so Sakura said: ”Listen, uh, I was kind of a bit mind-hacked at the time of our spar, which I didn’t know…I was under…psychic…influence. That gave me a phobia of getting trapped. So if we do a rematch, it won’t happen again, I promise. Sorry about that.” Sakura cleared her throat.

As they moved deeper within the hospital, Sakura’s face turned into one of confusion and discomfort. ”What the heck kinda…this is where Peach is..?”

When the door slammed down behind them she jumped, and when the patients began their lumbering assault, Sakura instinctively fired hadokens to keep them at bay. Which…didn’t work at all. Her fireballs jostled them around a bit, but they didn’t seem affected at all.

”What- what the-” Sakura used Telekinesis to push one back. ”D-do we just run?! I hate running!” Sakura complained. With that she turned to, well, run.

After Goldlewis’s display, all of the Seekers were finally given a moment to breathe at a bar called the Seventh Heaven. It was a little…common, for Karin’s tastes, so she ended up just drinking some water. It had been an interesting day. Karin wondered how successful it had been. They succeeded in temporarily thwarting Vandelay’s plan that they didn’t even know was happening. And Desperhado was completely destroyed, which wasn’t an outcome that was preferred considering they were trying to help Sandalphon take it over.

Sandalphon, who was new to the operation, asked for a debrief.

”I suppose I can fill you in.” Karin said after a moment. ”The Seekers operate out of a massive headquarters called Alcamoth. I have only ever been once, but it is quite the operation. The goal of the Seekers is to locate and destroy the thirteen Guardians that grant Galeem invincibility. I believe the Seekers have destroyed four already.” Karin said.

”There is also a group of interlopers who operate on Galeem’s behalf known as Consuls. They typically go by a single letter for their name. What their methods and goals are still remain somewhat unclear. Only none of it is good: to my eyes they bring chaos wherever they go. We had one turn an entire town against us before we even got there.” Karin explained, interlacing her fingers and crossing one leg over the other.

”Let’s see…you know about Friend Hearts and Fusions. Right now we are attempting to locate the Guardian of this area of the World of Light. Our leads on this front are scarce. Our only source of information is probably an untrustworthy one, very likely one of the Consuls themselves in some bizarre act of betrayal or politics or perhaps just madness.” Karin said, then going onto explain the details of what Happy Chaos told them.

”Apparently Mister Roxas is confident he can open any door in our way but, he currently isn’t with us. I believe that covers everything. Let me know if you have any questions. I will say I am not exactly a veteran member of the Seekers myself.” Karin admitted.

Viktor

Pei drummed her fingers on the shipping container. Her outfit and general...pinkness and blueness didn't really lend itself very well to staying blended in. Fortunately her outfit was always black in color. Now it had blue outlines and symbology instead of pink, and Pei had even dyed her hair a dark blue for the mission using temporary dye that would wash out after a couple of showers. But her skin was still a light blue and her top was still cropped and sleeveless. Just how it had to be! However, this outfit was made much more tactical by the addition of a utility belt around her hips with a few pouches.

Viktor answered her questions succinctly and without much dialogue. That left Iceburn to do most of the talking. To her credit, she kept her voice to a low whisper the entire time.

"So. You ever been on a stakeout before?"

"Have you ever been to a steak restaraunt before? I know this really delicious place back in Coast City."

"Can you see easily out of that thing?"

"Ice and Rain. With our powers combined, we are: Sleet!"

"Fuck, Marry, Kill...nevermind."

"See the Big Dipper? Yeah, I can't either."

"This seems like a stupid mission for like an entire team to be on. Is it just me?"

"What do you think they're talking about? 'Grr, I'm a big scary gangster. I kick puppies.' 'Oh, yeah? Well, I burnt down an orphanage!' 'That's nothin'! I drink milk right from the jug and put it back in the fridge.' 'What the hell's wrong with you?! Get him!'

"I can picture you meditating at the bottom of a river holding a heavy stone in each hand."

"I'm not annoying you, am I? I don't want to chase my team partner off again."

"I spy with my little eye...something...illegal."

"...♫He's gotta be strong, and he's gotta be fast, and he's gotta be fresh from the fight~♫..."

"Problem? What prob- oh crap!" At the sound of gunshots, Iceburn paradoxically pushed herself onto her hands and knees to get a better look at what was going on, while Viktor shifted a few inches back. When Viktor said recon only, she turned at him and grinned a little.

"Yeah, that's what he said: ReCoN oNlY!" She made her voice nasally and stupid. "He said it just like that, in that exact tone of voice. What did you wanna do, Rain? We obviously can't sit back and watch people die." She said. Sensing his interfering intent, she almost vaulted off the edge, but Rain told her to wait, so she did.

At the mention of someone getting hit with a stray bullet, she pressed her lips together in contemplation. "Well, we gotta find 'em. I'm with you."

As he jumped off the crate with confidence, Iceburn glanced down at the considerable distance below. It was big enough to sprain an ankle if she messed up the landing. The chances of that were low- she was good on her feet. But... not non-existant. That would be no good. And though gunshots were going off, her powers weren't exactly subtle. When he looked back up at her, she knew they were on the exact same wavelength! "Catch me, Rain!" She rolled off the side. There was a brief drop in her stomach before she landed safely in his super serumy arms. She hopped out, her boots hitting the floor.

"Xiexie! Now, let's go." She said, before going into a low profiled run.

"Forget the mission objective!" Iceburn repeated. "Let's get shit done."

With Viktor's lead, the pair managed to find the injured civilian. Iceburn lowered her voice a bit and spoke more boldly. "Don't worry, sir! The good guys are here!" She said, moving over to assist him. She blasted some Misty Ice onto the ground that formed a five foot tall ice wall to protect from bullets. Then she looped his arm over her shoulder and guided him around the steel crate into more solid cover as the ice wall began to quickly crack and break due to the low amount of time she afforded it. "I got him, we got him, we got you." She said to everyone around her.

Iceburn spoke to herself. "The three P's of first aid: Preserving life, preventing deterioration, and promoting recovery. " Letting out a breathe, she summoned the knowledge from those first aid classes she took.

She bid the civilian to sit down against the crate. "I'm gonna treat your injuries. Then, just stay here until the shooting dies down a bit, okay? I don't wanna risk movin' you while you're still bleeding and the fighting is happening." Iceburn said to the civilian.

Reaching into one of her utility belt pouches, she produced a green zipper bag with a big white plus on it. It was a first-aid back. She reached inside. "I gotta cut away your clothes a bit." She said. From her fingertips she produced an iceknife, and cut with extreme precision into his pants and shirt to isolate and reveal the wounds.

"Oh, easy peasy! You'll be fine and dandy after some bed rest and tomato soup, I guarantee it." Iceburn said reassuringly, dismissing the ice knife. With that, she began treating the man's injury to prevent further bloodloss, cleaning the wound "This might sting a bit-" and using gauze to bandage them. But that would pre-occupy her for the time being.

Sakura made the choice. ”Roxas-kun, I’m getting out here! We have to destroy the doomsday device.” She looked at Kale.

”You should leave and never come back. Get a hobby.” Sakura squinted at him, the threat implicit.

Taking the mini-LIFT down, Sakura found the SPECTRE device. She knew it when she saw it. Crackling her knuckles and full of energy from Sandalphon’s healing, she took her fists and feet to the device, cracking its metal shell and shattering glass and buttons. From the wall she ripped down everything she could. Vandelay couldn’t get away with something like that. They would have to tell someone about this plan too to get everything taken away and fixed.

After that, it was a trip to the bottom to reunite with the others.

”...Mind control!” She finished telling everyone else about the SPECTRE machine.

”Oh, Sandalphon-san. I’m glad you’re okay.” Sakura said, both bowing and also leaning over to set her hands on her knees.

”Quite.” Karin said, moving up to Sakura’s side. Sakura said ‘oh’ again and wrapped her arms around her friend in a hug. Karin didn’t reject it, but she did just pat Sakura on the shoulder and then ever so gently push her away.
”Quite.” Karin said. ”It seems our intervention here has gained us no shortage of tagalongs.” She said, regarding the newcomers, amused.

”Greetings. I am Karin Kanzuki. Welcome to your association with the Seekers, however long our paths remain the same.” She took the time to introduce herself with a curtsy.

Sakura was also relieved to see Raz again, hugging him, too, and also, Geralt, and really anyone who got too close. The whole fight was an emotional rollercoaster. And it wasn’t over yet. ”...If there’s a mission to save Peach, I’m in, obviously. Though I’m necessary to the plan, so.” Sakura stood firm, still in her uniform.

”Ohoho. Then I suppose I shall be leaving you again, Miss Sakura.” Karin said as the reinforcements began to bear down on them. ”I wish you the best of luck in rescuing the princess. Farewell!” She began to run.

Sakura was tapping into the SAS, using Luka’s power. ”Okay, okay, this is my first time doing this, Luka-kun, I think, it’s like?” She furrowed her brow. ”Like this!” And she did her best to teleport with the others, taking the hand with whoever was joining her.

Meanwhile, Karin hit the boost pads, not entirely sure how they worked but knowing their new ally demonstrated it quite effectively. ”Oh my!” She looked at her blurring feet in wonder, and then over her shoulder at the Motor Ball. ”Yet another infernal contraption! Each one spikier than the last! Joy!”

By the time the Seekers rallied themselves the two swordsmen had traded a good dozen blows total. Sam outmatched Kale in terms of raw skill and speed, and the handful of punishing slashes he landed in melee range forced his opponent to back off and utilize his far greater range of tools. A barrage from Kale’s options kept Sam at bay long enough for him to carve three more hot streaks into the floor and send them out as fire waves. Fwoosh, fwoosh, fwoosh! Sam performed a somersault jump over all three in quick succession, but when he came down with an overhead slash his blade slammed into a newly-formed Snow Globe. The cyborg clicked his tongue as he jumped back, and Kale lifted his beam saber. It gleamed, and when he swung it, the blade extended to cover the entire arena. He performed three such immense horizontal slashes, but after the first one Sam managed to parry the second two, then sheathe his blade and launch forward. When he fired off another iai slash, it carved through Kale’s Snow Globe, destroying it in a single hit. Since he hadn’t broken Kale’s poise, however, the man returned the favor with Slash Dash, blitzing through Sam with a high-speed slice. In terms of overall damage that put the two almost neck-and-neck, with Kale slightly worse for wear.

The last thing Roxas expected was for Kale to make his blade so huge. He managed to hurdle over the first swing, but the ones after were too swift for Roxas to jump over. So instead he slid underneath them. And then he just… hesitated a moment. Sam had thoroughly kicked his tail earlier. And the fact that the cyborg wasn’t even trying all that hard made it sting that much more. But what else could Roxas do? He had no magic at the moment and so whatever Roxas did it was going to have to be in the form of a melee strike.

He decided on a simplified version of a previous strategy. Roxas threw Oathkeeper so that it would fly in a circular arc around Sam’s right side from behind. Then he took off running to try circling around Sam from the opposite side. Last time Roxas did this he recalled the flying blades before Sam could deflect them. This time he kept Oblivion in hand and lunged at Sam. Roxas tried a two-handed thrusting attack from Sam’s left flank. By pointing the blade straight forward he could try to aim around Sam’s blade to avoid making contact with it.

Sakura leapt over the incoming swings like hurdles at the track, a look of worry and concern on her face as Roxas plunged head deep back into the battle. To be honest, she wouldn’t have minded letting these guys soften each other up a bit- after all, the Seekers had just come off a couple battles, too.

She decided to help Roxas engage Sam. As Roxas circled around Sakura dropped into a crouch, running straight for Sam and going to shoot out her leg towards his knee to lock him in place for Roxas’ mix-up to hit. ”Hi!” She said, almost embarrassed.

The two Seekers joined the fight just after Kale landed his Slash Dash, when Jetstream Sam was distracted. His expression tightened as he spotted Oathkeeper in flight. When he turned to face Roxas, he also beheld Sakura making a beeline toward him. Keyblade, keyblade master, and street fighter all converged on Sam more or less at the same time, and even a talented swordmaster couldn’t be everywhere at once, and even if he could block all three, it would leave him at disadvantage. Better to take out whoever he could. With this in mind, his eyes gleamed red and he threw out a heavy slash at Sakura when she sprinted in to kick him. The two traded blows, but it would take more than one hit to interrupt Sam mid-swing. Undeterred, his crimson arc sliced across Sakura’s unguarded head, leaving a cut across her eyebrow, nose, cheek, and shoulder as it flung her back, bleeding. Then Roxas struck him, first with Oblivion and then with Oathkeeper, and the third hit staggered him enough to make him react to the blow and susceptible to an ad hoc combo.

Sakura rolled to a stop and rested on her knees, bringing a shaking, shocked hand to her bloodied face. Her fingers came away red and she felt the red liquid run down the affected areas and down her arm. It was a hard hit, but unfortunately even with all her durability a shallow, superficial cut could still draw blood. ”O-oh, crap.” She said as running blood forced her to squint her right eye. She wiped her face and blinked. Her body was at its limits if her foes were drawing blood on such strikes.

Sakura ran back into the fray to support Roxas, blasting towards Sam with fireballs if only to help her companion. ”Hadoken!”

Though the sight of both interlopers targeting Sam surprised Kale, he wasn’t about to waste the opportunity. He raised his beam saber up, enveloped it in lightning, and plunged it into the floor. Once again a field of electricity surrounded him, and after a moment three pillars of energy dropped directly on top of Sam, as well as anyone unfortunate enough to be near him at that moment. That included Roxas, who heard the crackling of electricity early on, ”Stay back!” he shouted to Sakura, hoping to stop her from getting hit by the attack. After the attack concluded, Kale stood up straight again, smiling.

“You’re making this easy for me,” he taunted the others.

Well thanks to Kale’s attack, Roxas was now more preoccupied with the amount of damage he’d just taken than he was with fighting Sam. He reached a gloved hand into the pocket of his black coat and retrieved something. It was a green bottle, one of the four Potions that the Nobody still had on his person, and he used it on himself by gulping it down. It wasn’t a large heal by any means, but it was better than nothing, ’Sakura, here!” he tossed a green bottle at the Street Fighter. This one wasn’t just a Potion, but it was a Hi-Potion, Roxas’s last one in fact.

”I’ll take anything I can get as long as it isn’t a disease or something.” Sakura joked weakly, catching the mysterious potion out of the air.

He glanced over at Sam, suddenly feeling foolish for having focused so hard on fighting him. And while his first instinct was to shift his focus onto Kale, Roxas realized that that would only leave him and Sakura open to an attack from Sam. He ran to the Street Fighter’s side so he could stand at her back, ”You were right… man I’m such an idiot. We can’t keep bouncing between the two of them. My magic’s just about recharged, if we can hold out a few moments longer then we can use it to hit ‘em with a big attack together.” he said to her in a hushed tone so only she would hear him.

For her part, Sakura wasn’t sure about their chances. But with Roxas looking to team up, Sakura couldn’t turn him down. ”All right, Roxas-kun…we’ll do it together. What is this thing, by the way?” She asked. Assuming Roxas wanted her to drink it, she did, downing the potion.

“Mind if I cut in?” Sam stuck his head between the two of them as they muttered to one another, grinning. Catching them off-guard, he executed a speedy spin slash, his high-frequency blade a crimson ring around him. His rotation continued into a low sweep, hooking both Seekers’ legs out from under them. They fell just in time for a super-extended slash from Kale to breeze overhead all three of them, courtesy of their collective low profile. Then Sam left them behind, charging toward the CEO in an all-out sprint. Kale slashed two more times, but the Wind of Destruction parried both as he ran in, then sheathed his blade. Knowing what was coming, Kale went on defense, whirling his blade in a circle as he did against Sakura. A moment later Sam’s gunshot draw slammed into him with such power that it shattered the beam saber’s hilt and damaged his hand. He slid backward a few feet, kicking up dust, then jumped farther away.

With a big smile, Sam spread apart his hands. “Show me a good time, Vandelay.”

Kale smirked. “Hm.” Suddenly, the giant antennae surrounding the rooftop arena perked up, angling inward. Four panels on his back opened up, and from them extended four robotic arms. “You should see what this body is capable of.” The grabbers on the ends of the limbs spun up and rapidly reconfigured into four devices: two shield arms, a bright blue projector, and a spiked cannon. “Puts your DespoRHado tech to shame.”

“We’ll see about that!” Sam said, readying his blade.

“Oh yes.” Kale put his hands together and drew them apart with a flash, manifesting Excalibur’s Exalted Blade. “We will.”

Sakura pouted on the ground, looking over at Roxas. ”Is it ready yet?”

”I think so,” answered Roxas, tightening his grip on the Keyblades, ”We’re only gonna get one shot, so let’s make it count.”

Sakura nodded, and shot to her feet. ”Let’s go! Kale? Kale!” She shouted, looking to even the score. She began to run forward, gunning towards the arrogant businessman and ready to link up with whatever magic Roxas had in mind.

”Get around him!” She shouted. When the Limit Break began, she jumped forward and began to spin like a top, her leg extended as she balanced on her other foot. Her efforts locked Kale down on defense, forcing him to turn to face her as he blocked with both shield-arms.

”Light!” Roxas suddenly cried out. Suddenly he and Sakura were both enveloped by a warm, golden light. What began as a normal spinning kick soon transformed into something much more. The Street Fighter and the Keybearer suddenly spun around one another in the midst of Sam and Kale, though Sam quickly fled to leave his opposite number to the newcomers. They became like a tornado of kicks and blades, twin dueling tops that circled around each other like some kind of glowing ballet dance. Together they overwhelmed Kale’s defense, leaving him just about helpless.

”Here goes! Roxas shouted as he unexpectedly launched himself up and above Kale - with Sakura doing the same in sync. He pointed both Keyblades down and channeled magic through them, ”Fire!” and they shot forth a pair of enlarged Firaga spells. Nearby, Sakura had cupped her hands and thrust them downward, ”Hadoken!” her fireball rocketed downward and spiraled together with Roxas’s Firagas. They slammed into the ground and created a big, powerful blast of fire that enveloped the area they had jumped up from.

”W-wow!” Sakura landed on one foot and waved her hands to recover her balance. ”We were really in sync there! We’ll name it later!” Sakura took a fighting stance and surveyed the field to see if she needed to defend herself or push the offensive.

The Limit Break worked wonders. As the cyclone of flame and ki energy cleared, Kale stood with his flamethrower and laser lens arms damaged and inoperative. With a grunt of frustration he ejected them, leaving just the shield arms. Sam, walking up behind the Seekers, chuckled at the sight of him. “What a stunning performance! Maybe I can lend my talents…” He dashed between Roxas and Sakura, speeding toward the CEO. “...To the encore!” Kale blocked with his shield arms, raising them directly in front of him, but at the last moment Sam vaulted over and executed a downward crescent slash. He severed the arms supporting the shields, and as they fell to the ground he landed behind Kale and gave him a kick.

In those precious few moments while Sam was busy delivering his attack, Roxas was able to lean over and whisper one more thing to Sakura, ”Let’s try to wear them down and then use Friend Hearts on them. I’ll bet that’ll get them to stop.

Sakura nodded wordlessly and advanced.

“Oh, ow, augh!” Kale grunted as he rolled over. He ended up on his stomach but pulled himself up to one knee, then upright. Though he looked haggard, he also looked angry. “Ugh. I’m really having to work overtime on this one.” Seizing his torn and burnt coat, he cast it aside along with the remains of his shield arms, then held up his blade. Around the rooftop, the antennae adjusted themselves one more time, their tips glowing with a vivid, fiery orange energy. Arcs fired from each of them toward the center, forming an orb, and after another second it struck down on Kale in a massive bolt of orange lightning. “GRAAAAAAGH!”

Roxas circled around while Kale was busy transforming himself. While he was sure Sam would notice him, Roxas would just have to hope they could maintain a silent truce or something. Clearly Kale was the bigger threat right now.

Supercharged, Kale’s cyborg body gleamed with brilliant flame-orange rather than laser-blue. His Exalted Blade reformed with the same power-up, and his options showed up again, primed and ready to fire.. “Your little adventure…ends here.”

The hooded Nobody lunged, going for a back attack against Kale using his Keyblades. The only drawback to using that Limit Break earlier was that Roxas was once again without any MP. He just had to hope he could make it work long enough for his MP to recharge. It was his only option.

Sakura’s jaw dropped at the sight of their opponent's transformation. He got even stronger?! While Roxas snuck up behind, Sakura tried to keep Kale distracted. Fireballs were unwieldy and could be dodged, so her only choice was to walk forward and hope she didn’t have a repeat performance of Sam’s cut across her face. She eyed Sam uneasily, trying to keep him in her view, but ultimately she couldn’t split her attention evenly between both of the powerful fighters, though she didn’t realize it. Sakura swallowed dryly and began working her way towards Kale to try and threaten him with the idea that she might, at any moment, rush forward and begin to attack.

Having Sam on one side and the interlopers on the other worked to Kale’s disadvantage, at least at first. Roxas went for a metaphorical sucker punch, and Sam happily took the chance to attack from the opposite side. Kale buckled down and faced off against both at once. As he thrust, hacked, and parried, he used his footwork to try and make one of them block the other. He also evened the odds in other ways; his options targeted Roxas -flash, flash…fla-flash!- and exactly one second after every attack he made, an orange bolt descended to create a beach ball sized blast of electricity against the ground. Still, he took a handful of swings from both, and even if he landed a few in return, Kale quickly changed tactics. “Thunder!” After holding his blade up, he plunged it into the ground, creating a big field of orange electricity around him that shocked anyone who approached. After a brief moment, enormous lightning bolts fell, four each for each opponent that tracked their positions with a one-second delay.

Next, Kale dashed to one corner of the arena. His Exalted Blade couldn’t extend like his beam saber, but when he slashed the ground it created heatwaves all the same. “Fire!” They shot out one after another, each with the sound of a strident guitar riff. Finally, Kale called upon his Striker Frost. “And…ice!” The warframe stomped his foot, creating a much larger wave of ice spikes in a large cone.

Sakura hadn’t committed to anything. She blocked in anticipation, and for her trouble lightning kept her suppressed. She raised her arms above her head and the bolts forced her to one knee. She rolled out of the way of the next and crossed her arms and brought up her legs for the next two. At least she knew the timing now. Sakura looked up in surprise as the ice spikes came her way. Already her arms were getting tingly, numb, and sore, blocking these attacks took its toll. Sakura bent her knees and opted to jump clean over the entire wave, though the resulting leap left her with quite a bit of air time, her arms and legs pinwheeling. Sakura pushed herself to the ground with her Telekinesis to reduce this vulnerability.

”Ostrich! Do sonic boom- I mean sonic cutters!” She called out. Her new Striker appeared and began to send the projectiles Kale’s way. Hopefully they would give him something to worry about as she ran in to take Roxas’s place as the point person in the melee. She ran forward and leapt towards Kale, looking to bring her fists down on his head with an EX-Otoishi. But she cut it short and used Telekinesis to force herself to the ground stop short, going for a sweep to knock his legs out from under him with her foot.

Good thing she did that too. Roxas hadn’t fared super well against Kale’s barrage of attacks. He was able to dodge roll out of the way of most of them… at first. But Roxas was too close to Kale to simply dodge out of the way of the big thunder blast. And that kept him stunned for the follow up lightning strikes to hit him on top of that. Roxas managed to luck his way out of getting hit by the fire waves, but not so much the Ice spikes.

When the barrage was finally over, all Roxas could do was put some distance between himself and Kale and hopefully try to lick his wounds a bit while Sakura took point. He quickly downed a Potion, leaving him with just two remaining after that. He was still hurting but the Potion at least kept him on his feet. If he could just last a little longer, he’d get his MP back and could maybe give himself and Sakura a much needed Curaga.

As he took a quick break from his elemental battering, Sandalphon rang Roxas up. “I am currently assisting Team Mustang, but it looks like you’re still in quite the bind. I can heal you, so if you need help, just ask.”

For the time being he had to play it safe. While Sakura and - hopefully - Sam were on point in melee, Roxas hung back and decided to attack by throwing both of his Keyblades. Maybe they would hit while he was distracted by Sakura and Sam… or maybe they’d distract Kale and give them an opening to land hits. Either way it was better than just standing there and doing nothing.

He watched as his projectiles approached the scuffle. Sam had reached Kale to challenge him in close quarters before Sakura, but the Cold inflicted by Frost had slowed him down. This time when the two clashed Kale’s Exalted Blade sent Sam’s Murasama spiraling out of his hands. It landed point-first in the roof behind him. Kale might have followed up on that, but the Keyblades clipped him and Sakura arrived right after. When she closed in to take Sam’s place, he shook his head and walked over to retrieve it. The street fighter’s gambit worked, but as her sweep knocked Kale to the ground, he summoned his Lavos Striker to assist him. With all the energy suffusing Kale Lavos could afford to use his ultimate, Catalyze. As he thrust out his hands, nine crescent-shaped Catalyst Probes erupted from him and launched outward, spreading a fiery gel mist in wide lines. With the damage dealt to each target doubled by each element afflicting them, it packed a serious punch, and it also imbued Kale himself with Heat.

Sakura found it very unfair that he could call in someone else to wake up super for him! She vocalized as such. ”No fair!” She took a gamble and jumped into the air, over whatever attack Lavos would try to blast her back with. From his hand motions, she guessed it was either a big blast or a big wall, and she had already seen Kale’s big wall in the form of Snow Globe. After narrowly avoiding quadruple damage, Sakura would try to land practically on top of Kale as he rose, doing a kick in the air that would actually hit him in the back of the head with the knee of her other leg and land her behind him for some follow up punches and kicks before attempting to toss him to the floor. Her initial attack hit him and caused him to stumble a half-step away from the rooftop’s edge. When she landed, she did so at the edge of the rooftop, and when Kale turned he did so with a disjointed slash of the Exalted Blade that sent her into a crush counter spiral toward the precipice. Sakura gasped and stopped her spin with a planting of her foot, preventing herself from going over. Yet if the alternative was getting hit again and getting launched, she made the choice to roll off the edge and use Telekinesis to keep herself from plummeting off the elevator entirely. It wasn’t a lethal drop to the roof but it would hurt and probably take her out of the fight. Sakura took a moment to get some air back in her lungs, hanging onto the underside of the elevator.

Since Kale wasn’t directing any attacks at him, Roxas took that opportunity to use another Potion on himself. He had just one left now, but at least he was in decent shape again. Now it was time to get back into the fray, especially since Sam decided to disengage and leave Sakura fighting alone and got blasted by Catalyze in the process. When he got back into melee range, Roxas’s MP finished recharging. Lucky timing, Roxas just had to hope he didn’t waste it. If Kale was thrown to the floor, Roxas would try to capitalize on that by shooting a Blizzaga at him. Maybe he could pin him down with some ice of his own. In fact he shot three Blizzagas just for good measure.

”You’re! Getting! On! My nerves!” he shouted in between shots.

Walking forward, Kale rotated his exalted blade at high speed to block -and melt- the ice shots as they came in. “And who the hell are you?” He broke into a ninja run, sprinting past Sam toward Roxas with a low profile. After a moment he went into a slide, then suddenly launched forward into a bullet jump. He closed the distance in a second and came down with a two-handed drop slash. “You’re NOBODY!”

The attack was fast but it was telegraphed all the same. Roxas dispelled Oathkeeper out of his left hand and then held up Oblivion to catch the incoming drop slash. With both hands pushing up from opposite ends of the Keyblade, he could block the attack with the greatest efficiency. But he also leaned the weapon at a slight angle so that when it caught the slash he could easily redirect the momentum to his side. Then he instantly retaliated with Dual Counter, resulting in a wide circular slash that struck Kale’s chest.

”You know something? You’re right!” Roxas rebutted once his counterstrike had ended, ”I am a Nobody - in more ways than you realize. But what does that make you?” That’s when Roxas appeared to transform into a streak of light that circled around Kale and then shot at him like a flying bullet. This led into a powerful Cross Slash.

”The guy who’s getting his butt kicked by a ‘Nobody’! That’s who!”

”Yeah! Tell ‘em!” Sakura shouted distantly.

The Cross Slash smashed against the icy surface of a freshly formed Snow Globe. Kale smirked at him. “A heroic little quip.” His hand shot forward like a lunging snake and locked its metallic grip around the nobody’s neck. Kale then pulled Roxas toward him, but while he could pass through the Snow Globe, Roxas could not–resulting in him being crushed face-first against a freezing Cold solid surface. “But this is reality, kid,” Kale told him coldly, raising his Heat-infused blade. “And it looks like you’re out of your…element!”

He slashed the Exalted Blade through the Snow Globe, striking Roxas. When warframe-induced Heat met warframe-induced cold, they combined to form Blast. The resulting explosion sent Roxas flying and inflicted the status ailment Inaccuracy, reducing the accuracy of his ranged attacks by 30% for an incredibly impactful six seconds. Still, the injury the Blast inflicted was not insubstantial.

By that time, Sam had risen. He charged toward the Snow Globe to repeat his earlier feat while Kale’s focus lay elsewhere, and once again shattered the barrier in a single gunshot draw. Once again Kale punished him with a couple slashes, but it was a necessary sacrifice on Sam’s part for the sake of any continued progress at all. With that extra burst of damage, the swordsman really wasn’t doing well. His mostly human body was taking its toll.

Having climbed back onto the elevator. Sakura ran towards Kale full-pelt. She had to interfere before Kale could focus on following up on his attacks. To this end she looked to take him by surprise with a long ranged leap from behind, trying to hammer his head with both her fists. ”Hup!” He swung at her somewhat blindly, and for the second time that morning the two traded blows, though this time his rage-fueled fists left her in no condition to come out on top as she hit the deck a few dozen feet away. ”Oof!”

Roxas lay on the elevator floor for a couple of seconds, ”Ugh… Halo…?” he groaned, before forcing himself back onto his feet. He was getting tired and breathed heavily, ”I think we need that heal right about now.”

“Understood. Moving to assist.” In a flash, Sandalphon appeared, her longcoat billowing in the lofty rooftop’s wind as all seven-foot-four of her stood above Roxas. She lifted up her staff and conjured a right of electronic blue light around her, quickly growing more elaborate as its futuristic lines spread outward. Azure screens orbited rapidly around her. “You have about one second to get within twenty feet,” she called to Sakura, her voice raised slightly.

”One second?!” Sakura had already gotten back to her feet, clutching her ribs in anticipation of Sandalphon’s arrival. But the alarm pushed her to hurry, and as fast ash er legs could carry her she sprinted towards her pair of allies and leapt head first to get in range as fast as possible.

“...Angelic Wings.” When Sandalphon’s divine light bloomed, the Seekers within range were healed for 120% of their maximum health, including Sandalphon, who until that moment appeared to have an abundance of bloody bullet wounds. With the Archangel in Coordination protocol, her allies’ status ailments were cured and their maximum health increased by 20% as well. “A clean bill of health,” she reported matter-of-factly, repositioning her weapon to use the ‘gun’ part of her gunstaff. “

Sakura was surprised she sprinted all the way within one second (she didn’t) but the grin on her face widened as she took in a big breath. Swinging her arms, she took in a deep breath. She felt better than ever! ”Thank you so much, Sandalphon-san!” She exclaimed with a bow. Then she turned to their main opponent.

”What was that you said earlier about assists and picking friends?” Sakura asked Kale, channeling some sass.

Roxas then noticed that even Sam didn’t look to be in good shape, either. But maybe that wasn’t a bad thing…

Roxas quietly conjured a pink Friend Heart in one of his hands. Would it work if he did it now? Sam was currently engaged with Kale so he wasn’t likely to be able to avoid what he might perceive as an attack. The real question was whether Roxas could sneak the Friend Heart without being noticed by Kale. Well… only one way to find out. Roxas pushed his leg muscles and started to run in Sam’s direction.

”Think fast!” Roxas suddenly yelled, attempting to thrust the Friend Heart at Sam from behind. Please, please be hurt enough for this to work. The pink heart slammed into the cyborg’s back before he could react to what Roxas said. He was momentarily enveloped by a flash of pink light that dissipated into pink, heart-shaped bubbles. But in the aftermath stood Samuel Rodriguez - the saturation returned to his colors and his eyes no longer glowing red. He was freed, no longer gleaming. And fully healed, to boot.

That’s what we came here to do.” he said to the cyborg, ”I’ll answer your questions after we finish things here.”

“No questions from me, kid,” Sam told Roxas, able to recognize a saving grace when he felt one. He lifted up his crimson katana and crouched into a ready stance facing Kale. “Only answers.”

Kale’s shoulders slumped down. The sight of all his hard work erased left him despondent. “...This is seriously cheating,” he groaned.

Sakura clenched her fists, glancing over at Sam, who definitely seemed to be on their side, at least for this fight, now that Roxas had friend-hearted him. ”Alright. Here we go!” Sakura sprinted forward to close the gap on Kale, and then stopped just outside of his sword range to bait out a swing. Then she swung her foot out to slam painfully into his sword arm. She transitioned into a forward roll and rose up with a knee to his chest that would knock him backwards.

Roxas didn’t waste any time. With renewed vigor thanks to Sandalphon, he sprinted into the fray. He was able to use flow motion to vault clear over Sakura’s form so that he could come down on Kale with a drop slash from above, ”You’re the one who repeatedly changes form and supercharges yourself, and you think we’re the cheaters?” After he landed the hit, Sandalphon took her shot, her expertly-aimed ether slug placed right on Kale’s forehead. The heavy blow kept him staggered so Roxas could keep up the pressure.

Roxas attacked again. This time attacked once each with his Keyblades then followed that by performing a x-slash with both at the same time. Then he jumped a few feet back and threw both Keyblades forward. This would leave Sakura some room to get some licks in if she wanted to.

Instead Sam took center stage. He cut in with a series of heavy crimson slashes, deftly weaving past Kale’s fatigued attempts to parry him and avoiding the bolts of orange lightning. When Kale got what looked like an opening, he called upon both Frost and Lavos at once. Sam sheathed his blade and punished the CEO with his gunshot draw, both severing Kale’s left arm at the bicep and blinding his left eye in a blink. With a cry of pain Kale stumbled backward, his Exalted Blade disappearing as he clamped his hand to his face. Sam just snickered and stepped back, his katana on his shoulder.

If Roxas was going to do what he came here to do, then it looked like it was now or never. Roxas made a lunge for the CEO and with both hands thrust the tip of Oathkeeper in his chest, ”Your turn, Kale!” Roxas pushed the weapon forward, causing it to emit a searing white light from Kale’s chest. The man screamed, sounding like there was something else screaming from within. But Roxas didn’t let up. He felt like he was getting the hang of this the more times he did it.

”Nghaa! GET! OUT!” Roxas screamed before he forcefully twisted the keyblade to the side as if forcing open a lock. This triggered a blinding flash and explosion of light that knocked Roxas back a couple feet. It almost winded him but the Keybearer was back up in no time. Yep, he was definitely getting better at staying on his feet after using this power… whatever it was. He still had no idea how the Keyblade was able to do this, and at this point he was beginning to think he should make a point to try and learn.

Kale, meanwhile, knelt with his hand still over his bloody face. He looked terrible, but his good eye now appeared to be a dull mint green.“What…did you do to me?” he gasped. Sam just looked on quizzically, wondering why Kale wasn’t dead. Instinctively, Sakura stepped to the side to put herself somewhat between Sam and Kale to let Roxas talk.

Roxas dispelled both his weapons. This had gone on long enough, it was time for the truth. ”I opened your eyes.” Roxas replied, ”Yours too.” he added with a sidelong glance at Sam. ”You’ve been living in a fake world. We all have. And the thing responsible for messing everything up has its influence everywhere and in everyone. You’re gonna start noticing colors looking off on some people, and a red glow in their eyes. That’s the telltale sign of its influence.” Roxas paused, knowing they probably didn’t have time for full explanations until later. Before he continued he directed their attention toward Sandalphon, whom they would both see was still under the influence. ”But as you both just saw, there’s a way to break the influence that all this has on people. That’s ultimately what my friends and I are doing. Breaking its hold on people until we can figure out a way to stop it for good and put everything back where it belongs.”

At this point he knew he’d have to say something to Sandalphon, ”As confusing as this probably is to you, I’m guessing you’re only concerned with the fact that we managed to stop the violence. Right?”

Sandalphon’s face betrayed nothing. “What you told him intrigues me. Is this…influence unique to Kale?” Her pupils turned into question marks. “And if it is not. Could I ask that you do the same for me?”

”The influence is in everyone.” he confirmed, ”I can purge it from you, sure. But the influence will take hold and make you try to resist me, even violently. I’ve seen it happen before.”

Without a word, Sandalphon planted her gunstaff in the ground. She took a couple long strides toward Roxas and knelt down. “Quickly. Before one of them decides to kill someone.” Kale looked on, trying to sort through his thoughts, while Sam debated on whether or not to prove her right.

”Alright, brace yourself.” Roxas said, summoning Oathkeeper and moving to thrust into Sandalphon’s chest just like he did earlier with Sam. He pushed it forward and as before it caused searing light to begin erupting from the point that it made contact. Resistance came in the form of Sandalphon trying to pry the Keyblade out, her pupils turning into crosshairs. The red glow of her eyes intensified as she did this. But despite how much taller she was, Roxas was physically stronger and able to maintain his hold. With all his focus and with both of them letting out a loud cry, Roxas twisted the Keyblade to its side. This of course produced the usual blinding flash of light. And unlike last time, this one didn’t even knock Roxas back. The more he used this purging technique the more he mastered it.

“Hmm…” Sandalphon furrowed her brow, her hand on her chest as the searing pain faded away. Though her lungs felt constricted as she tried to fill them with air, when she finally managed it she found herself breathing more freely than ever before. She inhaled deeply, and turned her gaze toward the sky, her pupils taking the form of plus signs. “Goddess Illyia…have mercy upon me. I have been a fool.”

Sakura looked between Sanalphon and Roxas, a hesitant smile on her face. ”I think you did it..!”

Roxas felt his knees buckle a bit but he caught himself and kept his balance. Doing the keyblade purge twice in a row was a bit more taxing than it first seemed. But nevertheless he shifted his gaze between all three of the people he had just freed, ”Can you see it now?” he asked all of them, ”This fight between Vandelay and DespoRHado, and even this entire election between Armstrong and Shinra. It’s all just a stitched together mismatch of people and places that were never meant to interact in the first place. And the thing at the bottom of it all has a name… Galeem.”

Sakura rushed to Roxas’s side and set her hand on his shoulder, though it seemed like he didn’t need the help by the time she got there, she felt the need to do so anyway.

As Roxas spoke, Sandalphon’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. Not at him, but at the urgent chatter coming through her sigil. “Excuse me. It looks like we have a situation.” She stood and seized her gunstaff, then looked back at the others. “Kale will continue to act out of self-interest with no regard for human life. He deserves to die.” Without further ceremony she disappeared, teleporting back to the DespoRHado situation.

After a moment, Sam removed the sword from his shoulder. “Be that as it may…Sandalphon speaks the truth. If we allow Kale to activate Project Armstrong, everyone outfitted with Vandelay tech will be subjugated to total mind control. And besides.” He grinned, leveling his blade at Kale. “He’s really just asking for it, isn’t he?”

”Project ‘Armstrong’?” Roxas asked with an incredulous tone, ”That name makes it sound like the Senator’s plan, not Kale’s.” he shook his head, getting increasingly exasperated. Despite Kale’s pain, the man couldn’t help but smile. ”But how’s this then? Kale gets this one chance to call off Project Armstrong right now. If he refuses… well… we can’t just let it go can we?”

Sakura was still reeling from the revelation. ”What- what the heck! What is wrong with you!” She pointed at Kale.

”You better cut it out. Seriously.” She said to him. [color=f49ac2]”Tell us where the doomsday machine is so we can destroy it!”[color]

”There’s always a doomsday machine.” She said off-handedly to Roxas.

“Urk…” Kale looked at his arm, then hung his head. “This is just too much work. It’s downstairs, right at the bottom of the elevator.”

”Perfect!”

Sam clicked his tongue. “Not good enough, Kale. If DespoRHado wants you dead, you’re dead.”

”Oh, come on.” Roxas muttered with increasing frustration, ”How can you two still be at it like th—”

“DespoRHado as you know it is about to stop existing,” Kale retorted. “During the fight I got some pretty neat emails. Your buddies Mistral, Monsoon, Khamsin, and Sundowner are all dead.” An explosion in Circuit Royale, where the DespoRHado dropship served as mission control, caught his attention. From the heights of the Signal Tower the Seekers could see conflict down there between Sandalphon’s androids and a huge force, newly arrived. “And it looks like that angel’s next on the bucket list.”

“Dead?” Sam tilted his head. The news stilled his blade. “...Really?“ If the Winds of Destruction were no more, DespoRHado was dead in the water. They had lost, their principles defeated, and allegiance to them rendered worthless.

Sakura ran to the edge of the elevator. ”Isn’t that where— Sandalphon-san is in trouble!” Sakura exclaimed, worried. They were so far up! ”U-um, Halo! Halo, are you there?” She said aloud. But there was no response.

”Ah! That does it!” Roxas lunged for Kale and pressed the tip of Oblivion at his throat, ”I’ve had it with you! Both of you!” he shot a quick and angry glare back at Sam before returning his attention, ”You see where all this got you? Was it worth it? Well was it? Because it doesn’t look very worth it to me!” he tried playing this the nice guy way like Sora would. But if these two pigheaded cyborgs weren’t gonna play ball, then fine!

”Roxas! What are you- we have to-” Sakura glanced back and forth between Sandalphon’s distant problem, the standoff on the elevator, and down over the side to where Project Armstrong was supposed to be. Have to…what?

“Well, I suppose you could say I’m from around the Mediterranean, a rather religious community. I’ve been traveling away from it for quite a while though; I’ll have to admit I’m a bit older than I look.”

Beatriz nodded, interested to meet fighters from around the world with different life experiences than her. ”Cool! Older than you look, huh?” She scratched her head. She wasn’t sure what to make of that, so she settled on old reliable.

”Well, y’know…yeah, cool!” She said. ”I guess that makes this my first time talkin’ to someone from the other side of the ocean.”

“Heavens, no!” Rosie smiled. “I have nothing better to do until the tournament, personally. But don’t let me keep you, either. If you want my advice, it wouldn’t hurt to scope out the competition. I suppose I’ve already given you a bit of a start, but-”

”That’s good. I didn’t really expect to talk to anyone at all. You look you have…I dunno. Fans, or some shit.” She laughed sheepishly, rubbing her arm.

Bea startled, ducking and moving her hands defensively to her head as she heard an explosion. It wouldn’t be her first time taking cover from sudden gunshots, and for a moment it showed on her face. ”Caralho! What the fuck was that? Someone throwing bombs around in here?” She brushed her hands against her shirt, chuckling nervously.

When Rosie offered Beatriz a phone, the girl raised her hands in a placating manner. ”Thank you, but-” She reached a front pocket on her bag and produced a flip phone. ”I got my own!”

”Alright, I’m gonna call ‘em, I guess. Thanks for helping me out and chattin’ and stuff, Miss Rosie.” Beatriz said. ”For some reason, I have a hard time picturin’ you losin’. She said with a tilt of her head. Gathering up her backpack she gave Rosie a casual salute and went to a quieter corner of the area, dialing the number of her home.

Bea plugged her other ear and held the phone close.

“Beatriz, my wonder child!” The voice of her father came in, speaking in Portuguese. “How are you? Are you going to fight yet? Going to bloody up some noses for us?”

”That’s the plan, Papa.” Bea responded in kind with a smile.

“Maria! Bianca! Girls! Get over here, it’s Beatriz!” She could hear her father shouting. “She’s gonna fight soon!”

“Ack, I hate it! Why!” Came the distant voice of her mother.

“Because-” Her father turned his attention back to the phone. “Bea, are you nervous? You must be nervous.”

”Ehh, a little…” Bea admitted. In truth her heart was pounding just thinking about getting onto that stage.

“Well, don’t be.” Her father said. “I don’t know much about fighting, but I know a Barro doesn’t do anything at half effort.”

“And if you lose,” Her mother began.

“She won’t lose!” Dad replied.

“And if you lose, you will be our special little girl and I have prepared dessert for you. And there is always next year. You are so very young, Beatriz, and I hate your passion but I love you so much, and I support you.”

”Thanks, Mamae-” Bea replied. Her mother’s distaste for fighting always got a good-natured wince out of Beatriz, because, really, mom was right. Bea could literally be doing anything else. If she had chosen to follow football as her athletic passion, she would probably save her mother a lot of stress. Unfortunately for everyone, nothing made Beatriz happier than fighting.

“Beatriz. Beatriz!” Came Bianca’s voice. “How about this- the Barro Barrage! You jump on them and do a SHIT ton of punches!”

“Language!”

“Language!”

”Language!”

“What- but BEA gets to swear!” Bianca whined.

“Well,” Papa said. “That is because Beatriz is a lost cause. There is still hope for you.”

”Gee, thanks.”

“Am I wrong?”

”No, but it still hurts, you know?” Bea said with a laugh. ”Let’s go back to the part where you all tell me how much you love me and how proud you are and how proud I should be. That was my favorite part.” Bea said this and then put the phone away from her ear as her family on the other side did just that. A request like that, even made in irony, would never be turned down on the side of her parents.

”That did the trick.”
“Bla bla bla bla-, oh, are we done?” Bianca said with a giggle.

”Hey, yeah. Bianca. I want a new picture of me raising my hands in victory when I’m done, okay? I think I’ll put my trophy in front of yours, if that’s good with you.”

“Thhbpbpbpbpbpbpbt.” Came the eloquent response.

“Listen to me, Bea.” Papa said, serious. “I want you to go out there and show them what you are made of. You are made of tougher stuff. You have a fire in your eyes, I have seen it. I look at you, and I see someone who only gets stronger every day because she wishes it so. You have worked so hard for this- don’t think for one second you don’t deserve to be out there. Because you do.”

“I don’t want you to think things like: Oh, it’s okay if I lose, they are older than me, they are more experienced than me. Those things can wait. If you want to win, you have to WANT to win. You have to know you will win. Because your opponents will look at you and know without a doubt they can beat you. You must stand firm. As you rise, they will crack. Trust me, I know these things, I am your father. We love you, I love you, Beatriz.”

Beatriz was quiet for a moment. Clearing her throat, she turned into the corner she was standing in so the other competitors didn’t see her eyes getting wet.

”Damn.”

”Thanks, Dad.” At that moment, Beatriz winced as the loud announcer lady began to announce very loudly.

”Oh, shit- o-okay, I gotta go! Love you guys, bye!” She clacked the phone shut and shoved it back into her pack. Bouncing on her heels she slapped her head a few times and got into game mode.

Though, she couldn’t help but give the announcer another sideways glance.

”Is that- should we do something about that worm?”

Beatriz stepped up into the arena. Underneath her ill-fitting hand-me-downs was the body of a fighter. Her shoulders, legs, and abs were toned and not as lean as one might expect. Beatriz’s style included bursts of raw power. Her coach had given her fighting gear, and Beatriz was representing her gym in the ring. A black sports bra and black trunks with green outlines was the primary outfit, as simple as it got. Around her hands were some fingerless gloves, and her feet were bare save the ankle-supporting wrappings around them.

The previous night Beatriz had hunted down every last stray piece of body hair and eliminated it with laser precision, from her legs to her armpits. She showered religiously to reduce the chances of breaking out. Beatriz sometimes thought she was too tomboyish to be self-conscious, but all that went out the window when the eyes of the world would be on her.

The announcer called out Beatriz and Brenda.

”It- it’s BeatriZ. Not Beatrix!” She called out, trying not to let it get under her skin. When she opened her mouth, the green mouth guard lining her teeth was made visible. Thus the finer points of her consonant correcting might have been lost in all the din.

Bea bounced lightly from foot to foot, though, her heart pumping. She eyed her opponent. What is it with all these tall women today? Brenda seemed confident. Bea thought about what her father said and steeled her resolve.

”All right. All right.” She raised and lowered her fists rhythmically. ”Boxer versus boxer, huh? Right? You ready for this? I’m goin’ all out, lady.” She jogged towards the center of the ring to meet her.

”I can’t wait!” Was Beatriz ready? She had to be!

Everyone did their part in fighting monsters or dishing out damage. Jesse avoided a few attacks and noticed that when she did get hit, it hurt in an…interesting way, and she flashed like she was in a video game. Weird!

Fortunately, it didn’t matter. If Pizza Head wasn’t dead, well, he was certainly giving up. Jesse couldn’t help but wince and suppress a laugh as Nadia and Bowser quite frankly beat the shit out of him. “Shit, guys. I think you got him.”

“So, yeah, I guess he’s still alive?” Jesse pondered Pizza Head. “It’s not like I haven’t seen a dead body before, but…people turn to ash, here. That’s peculiar. But, hey, we got the Mask Piece.” She gave Nadia a thumbs up.

“Good work everyone. Koopas. Good stuff. Everyone. Yes.” She clapped her hands together and did another pair of thumbs up.

She went to the cliff and set her hands on her hips, staring at the ruined city and massive vista below. Descending had always been exceptionally easy for Jesse since she got her powers. Ideally she would just be able to float down and shoot at anything that got in the way of her flightless teammates.

It was, however, a nice view. “A ruined city. Recently, too? It’s hard to tell if that city is a thousand years old or only a few months old. I suppose technically it’s both.” Jesse mused.

“There’s no culture, no context, for any of this. It’s just a big LEGO set.” Jesse complained. “I would love to see all this amazing stuff in the places they are supposed to be in, with the people who are supposed to live in it. Until then, though…” She kicked a rock off the ledge and watched it plummet. “Not bad. I’ll take what I can get.”

“Ooor I could entertain myself by blowing shit up and making shit up.” Jesse said, squinting over at the Koopa troop. “Is any of that stuff actually useful?” She asked with a laugh. “Maybe?” She watched a glider plummet over the edge. “Not that one.”

Pizza Face turned into Pizza Head, and Jesse felt a familiar unpleasant feeling. Now Jesse considered herself an expert in vague unease as an indicator of evilness, considering that was basically all she had dealt with as an FBC Director. But like the King before, this Pizza Head was somehow wrong. How, exactly, Jesse couldn’t tell. Pizza Head looked no more outlandish or evil than anything else she had seen in the World of Light.

If anything, a guy with food for a head is basically mundane. So what’s with him? What classifies them as a different category from everything else? How important could it be to our main objective?

At the moment, such burning questions would have to wait. A whole host of monsters came out of the blue to assist the new freaky weirdo they were trying to kill. Jesse decided to focus down the big bad himself. She had the firepower to do it. Jesse Levitated above all the chaos and tried to pin down Pizza Head. He was a slippery dodger, avoiding attacks, but there was no way he could dodge everyone’s projectiles all at once. Not with some of them traveling at different speeds.

Jesse used Grip and began to put down the fire, its damage consistent and strong at all ranges, with a healthy supply of quickly regenerating bullets to boot.

Rubick was in a magic duel with some kind of eyeball monster that fired exploding eyeballs.

“Weird, but- yoink!” Jesse reached her hand out and snatched one of the projectile out of the air with Launch. Then she Launched it at Pizza Head’s feet, looking to blow him away or even better, up. Rubick would be assisted in his battle by Jesse occasionally snatching one of the eye monster’s eyeballs and flinging it at Pizza Head instead.

All the while laying down the firepower with Grip. Weirdly, the guy didn’t seem too keen on fighting back, just avoiding hits and using his monsters to battle.

Guess he underestimated us. Jesse said, ripping one last eyeball out of the air and flinging it at Pizza Head.
Vandelay Campus - Finance

Location: Midgar Sector 06, the City of Glass
Blazermate’s @Archmage MC, Zenkichi’s @Multi_Media_Man, Karin’s @Zoey Boey, Sandalphon
Word Count: 7159 (+8)

While the other teams scattered in order to reach their various destinations, those who opted to join the fray in Finance were faced with a relatively straightforward path laid out before them. Their objective lay within the confines of the most high-profile building on the Vandelay Campus, the absolutely colossal ‘V’ whose two prongs stretched up into the heavens from the iconic glass-domed atrium, itself a massive edifice to begin with. To get there, Zenkichi ended up retracing some of the steps he took last night along the road to Dendemille Theater, only to turn right and proceed along the main thoroughfare to the atrium with Blazermate and Karin at his back. While the detective and the heiress might contend for the position of leadership in this little squad, Zenkichi at least possessed one tangible advantage: the fact that Sandalphon routed her communication line through him, tinged as he was by the supernatural.

“The office of the Head of Finance is very high up within the atrium, and his private elevator is inaccessible,” Sandalphon told them over her magic connection, after explaining that she and this team would go by the codenames Halo and Hardline respectively. “While Khamsin can’t reach it on his own, he told us he had an idea, and refused to elaborate. His team has already inside the Atrium and have entrenched themselves against waves of robots fresh from Security. You’ll have to fight through them in order to reach Khamsin.”

True to her word, the wide-open thoroughfare leading to the Atrium sported some of the fiercest fighting in the entire Campus. Khamsin had apparently hogged a huge portion of the DespoRHado assault force for himself, including Gekkos and Grads, and Vandelay had trotted out an appropriate response. Rather than typical GNR and SBR units, this taskforce featured SBR-CUR swordfighters with red-hot blades and flame-throwing GNR-FL0 units, backed up by burning BL-1Z5 boxers with fists of fury as strong as they were fast, and airborne VU-REV bombers with wings of flame. Therefore, as one might expect, the well-trimmed lawns, flowers, and hedges were all on fire. The defensive line formed by DespoRHado in front of the Atrium’s main entrance meant that Vandelay’s robots lay between the Seekers and their goal. It was a blazing battlefield, and it looked like the Seekers would need to wade right through it.

”Goodness…” Karin said as she ran, watching the war in front of her. She frowned at the sight of the burning flowers. ”What a shame.”

”I can give us cover for a time if I heal you all up first.” Blazermate said, healing her allies and herself with some overheal and getting a projectile shield ready to give the team cover as they passed over the lawn on fire. There wasn’t really much point in summoning her striker yet.

Karin looked at her body thrumming with healing energy. ”Marvelous, Miss Blazermate.” Standing by a tree, she regarded the battlefield thoughtfully.

”I don’t see any way around it, I’m afraid. Any enemy we bypass will shoot us in the back, and any enemy we haven’t passed yet will gun us down from the front. We’ll just have to carve a path through both sides, with Miss Blazermate protecting us from any enemy we aren’t currently engaged with. ” That was her plan, anyway. No one here, as far as she could tell, possessed the ability to slip through a battlefield unnoticed.

”Mister Zenkichi, I recognize a fighter when I see one. I assume you are up for this task?” She asked with a wry smile.

"Of course," Zenkichi replied coolly, "These old bones aren't that worn down just yet. A few robots is nothing." With a deep breath, his semi-professional outfit was replaced with the gunslinger-themed Phantom Thief attire he fought in, and he smirked. "This Wolf is ready to hunt."

And he would have ample opportunity. As the newcomers approached, a GNR-FL0 on overwatch spotted them, and he sounded the alarm. “We got incoming!” A whole bunch of the fiery SBR variants turned on the Seekers without delay, quickly forming up in bombastic fashion. They flipped and somersaulted to assemble themselves into a dynamic battle formation, landing in flashy action poses. Of course, some of them flubbed the maneuver and ended up knocking into one another, causing a petty squabble that quickly spread through the whole squad.

“Idiots!” A single BL-1Z5 punched the air at high speed, drawing oxygen into his furnace to set his fists ablaze in a burst of flame. “Get them!” Grumbling, the smaller robots put their differences aside and obliged, the GNRs staying back to spray streams of fire while the SBRs closed in with burning swords at the ready.

As the fight began, Sandalphon’s voice reached them. “Be advised. At low health, these units will Overcombust, shrugging off hits while they chase you down to detonate on top of you. Their leader will split the battlefield with walls of fire. If you can, extinguish his flames.”

”Thank you!” Karin said to their advisor, running forward. Those sword units seemed predictable. She assumed they would swing the first chance they got. She sprinted forward to meet the first foe and then dashed back, her momentum reversing on a dime to bait out a swing. Then she dashed back in a delivered a brutal series of advancing palm strikes into the bots metal body before sending it flying with an elbow towards its fellows that followed behind.

Blazermate meanwhile kept her healing beam on whoever was pushing forward first, letting them absorb some light hits that might get through. Hearing about the exploders, Blazermate had ways of blocking said explosion, notably her projectile shield and even an ubercharge if it was needed. It was a bit of a shame that they were fighting only robots here, she kind of wanted to make some zombies that could help out, but right now she was on healing duty and that was all she was doing. It was too dangerous to go for the purgatory cracks right now, even if the exploding ghosts would help a lot.

Zenkichi ran forward, greatsword resting on his shoulder as he went right past the flaming sword-wielding machines, taking a few light hits in the process, and charging down the GNRs in the back. Grunting as he hefted his blade and brought it down on one of the shooters that hadn't broken formation, he followed up with a stab through the downed soldier's body, disabling it and kicking it to the side before moving on to send its allies following in its footsteps. Even as flames washed over his overhealed body, he didn't complain, more than used to shrugging off minor damage as he fought through hordes of enemies with the Phantom Thieves.

Finished off by the greatsword's deadly stroke before it could activate its Overcombust, the SBR-CUR never rose from the spot where Karin’s bare-handed assault deposited it. More than a little spooked by the ruthlessly efficient display, the four GNR-FL0s spread out to either side in an effort to surround Zenkichi, as well as gain some distance. He could chase down and wreck one, sure, but that’d give the others the moment they needed to burn through his overheal and into his health. As his underlings split, the Blaze made its move two. It executed a powerful low uppercut, scraping his fiery knuckles along the ground before swinging upward to send a flaming furrow through the concrete walkway. In a flash a wall of flame split the battlefield in half, and the Blaze did not hesitate to advance through it to back up the two remaining SBR-CURs facing off against Karin.

”I see.” She saw Zenkichi vanish from her sight with a wall of flame. She eyed the trio of killer robots in front of her coolly. ”So the three of you have chosen to face me alone? I suppose self-preservation isn’t cost effective programming. Karin said, running her hand through her golden hair coils.

Honestly though, being separated from Zenkichi and Blazermate wasn’t ideal. She might have to figure out a way to push through it. Karin dashed to the left, the wind separating visibly around her. She made to put the robot on her left between her and the other two bots, so they would have to get around their comrade before attacking her. Her leg snapped out into the ankle of the Saber bot, and she stepped forward and turned her shoulder into it, moving to get past the sword and crunch her back into the bot. ”Orochi!” After that she made to snatch its sword arm by the wrist and glance over her and the bots shoulder to see what its allies were up to. While the other SBR hung back for a moment, perhaps knowing what was in store, the Blaze went full offense, rushing Karin down with a flurry of fiery punches.

”Hmph.” Karin turned and maneuvered the SBR into the way of the flurry of blows, ensuring Blaze would pummel his subordinate instead of her. She popped the loosened sword up into the air, jumped to meet it, and elegantly flung it towards Blaze. It span quickly to cut into him. The bot stumbled backwards and she approached. They exchanged blows. Every time the Saber unit tried to get close, she circled around, putting the Blaze unit between it. When Blaze unit thought her movement was getting predictable and wound up a swing, she dropped onto her palm and shot her legs forward, eyes closing confidently as she shattered the big bots kneecap. Saber brought its sword down and it clashed with her forearm. It swung and she traced the tip with her eyes, stepping from side to side. It brought a sword horizontally and she prepared. She caught the blade between her palms with a crack of ki. Seemingly with no effort, she used her arms like a scissor and twisted it out of the Saber units hands. ”Predictable~” She cooed smugly.

As the Blaze unit clambered onto its feet, slow in mobility but still high in power, she crushed the Saber unit with a series of palm strikes. It flew to the ground and went into Overcombust, ready to squeeze a few more dollars out of its creation process. Karin aimed her hand and fired her grapple hook to the Overcombusting bots chassis, and then attached the other end to the big boxer bot. Karin had gained plenty of experience fighting enemies that exploded with no regard for their own safety down below the city. They were never particularly gifted with any amount of intelligence- otherwise, they would probably choose to live! The thought made her chuckle.

“What the-!” The moment the Saber flew toward him, the Blaze realized what was about to happen and clamped his jaw. “Hrrgh!” At just the right moment he parried his incoming ally, rebuffing it long enough to ram his fist into its chassis with an upset punch and flip it over his body. The Saber slammed into the ground and bounced away, then promptly detonated in the air. Rumbling, he turned back to confront Karin, fire welling up in his forearms. He slammed the ground, unleashing a quick but weak wave that could still knock someone over, before pumping his fists in a dramatic ultimatum, complete with flashy red background and pop up text. He then struck five poses, moving like a Tokusatsu hero. He first extending his left arm to the right, then right arm to the left, then both fists up and crossed, then forward, then side-facing with one pulled back. After the fifth pose he zoomed straight toward Karin with a trail of flame to unleash five mighty corresponding blows.

Karin had dropped into a crouch, the quick wave dispersing as she slid backwards slightly. The robot began to pose, and Karin raised an eyebrow. She took the moment to carefully advance, not wanting to get baited into over-extending by a taunting opponent. When the boxing bot blazed towards her, her caution proved well warranted. The blows smashed against her arms as she deflected most of the force, her boots grinding into the concrete. This wouldn’t do.

”Ressencho!” She spent most of the V-Meter she had gained thus far on a V-Reversal. Blocking one strike, there was a streak of white light and a darkening of the surrounding air for a brief moment. Karin glided past the next oncoming fist and then stepped into a defensive elbow strike. While it would only deal a small amount of temporary gray damage, it had force and knockback to let Karin turn the tide on her attacker. Karin dashed forward and kicked the boxer, looking to wear him down and prevent it from starting up any big, hard hitting attacks like that again. No big dramatic walls of flame, ground pounds, or posing. She aimed to dent his chassis one practiced strike at a time and force a mistake. Eventually he obliged, forcing his way through a non-committal kick to crush the ground where Karin had just been standing. Leaping over his head she brought her leg down like an axe onto his back, kicked the back of his knee and then popped his heavy body into the air with a Tenko palm strike. She followed it up with another one, yelling as she put all her force into the follow-up strike, cracking the concrete with a gust of wind. In a shower of sparks the boxer flew away, no longer able to fight. With one final flourish, Karin turned her attention to the flame wall and her ally on the other side of it.

Shaking his head as the gunners tried to surround him, Zenkichi tutted. ”No good fighter is a one-trick pony. Valjean!” Summoning his Persona, Zenkichi pointed to his left, calling ”Triple Down!” as he broke to the right, rushing for one of the gunners as Valjean unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the two to his left, the wide-ranging attack more than enough to fit both of them within its range. Sure, leaving one enemy free to attack wasn’t ideal, but it sure beat the hell out of three.

As the gunner he ran at hefted its flamethrower and bathed the charging Zenkichi in flames, he grit his teeth and kept running, the heat quickly sapping away at his overheal. He stopped suddenly, planting his foot hard onto the ground, and swung with his greatsword, transferring the momentum of a running man into the swing of his sword, and all of that force concentrated on the edge of its blade meant there wasn’t even a sliver of hope for his target. With a crunch, the gunner unit’s torso was split in half just around where the bottom of a person’s ribcage would be, and Zenkichi turned to the one he hadn’t had Valjean target.

This gunner was more wise to his tricks, and circled around as it unleashed its flames on Zenkichi. Not sure how long the fight would last, he kept his revolvers in reserve, instead charging head-on once more. He wasn’t as fast as Karin, but he was no slouch, either, and his overheal had barely run out as he reached the second gunner, while the two Valjean had shot up were regaining their bearings, fairly hurt but still functional. ”Still standing, huh? Not after this, you won’t be! Valjean, Megido!”

As orbs of Almighty magic appeared and exploded among the gunners, Zenkichi swung at the unharmed opponent. Lacking the same momentum thanks to having to stop to direct Valjean, the attack left the gunner hurt but undefeated. It retaliated by cracking its flamethrower against Zenkichi’s face, and he snarled before planting his sword in its gut, planting his hand on its shoulder, and tearing his sword out and through the side, dealing massive damage to the robot and finishing it with an overhead slash. His focus, however, had left him blind to the two GNR-FL0s behind him, Overcombusting and about to detonate right on his back.

Seeing Zenkichi in trouble and having charged her Ubercharge, Blazermate deployed it, saving the turk from the explosion coming his way through sheer invulnerability. ”close one! You know, we should make use of this invulnerability.” Blazermate said, as she flew up to deal with a GNR-FL0’s herself, her confidence boosted by her invincible state. She then realized that these guys were… not nearly as scary as she thought they’d be. It was like fighting a newcomer to robattling as they took hit after hit. Sure they were at least durable, but they just attacked her while she was uber, even combusting in her face in a very predictable pattern when she got a good punch on what she assumed was its face. ”Ooh…. huh.” Blazermate said, not expecting that.

She joined up with Zenkichi to heal up the man while she herself swapped over to her ubersaw. Since she could see the health of these things and when they would combust, she could hit them with her ubersaw, then zoom away just a bit before they would start to combust to leave someone with a harder hitting attack to finish them off. As she moved over the wall of fire to heal Karin, she touched a red crack on the way, having been too fearful to grab one before. This summoned an angry cute ghost that zoomed off to blow itself up and destroy one of the GNR-FL0s Blazermate had weakened prior.

”Hey Karin, ever gotten a kritz? You seem to be doing well in the taking hit department.” Blazermate said, giving her friend a dose of kritz.

”A what?” She asked, before startling as she looked down at her glowing fists and a surge of power.

Zenkichi smirked as the GNR-FL0s exploded against him without dealing a lick of damage, thanks to Blazermate’s ubercharge, and pounced on the last he could see on this side of the fire, crushing it beneath his greatsword and easily finishing it off, leaving him alone. ”Thanks for the assist!”

With the last of the flamethrower units destroyed, the Vandelay robots’ reserve force had been thoroughly decimated, allowing the Seekers to advance. Of course, that also meant that the extra power coursing through Karin’s limbs courtesy of the Kritzkrieg had nowhere to go, so she really needed to get moving if she wanted to have any hope of actually using it. Up ahead the corporate warfare at the threshold of the Atrium had continued to rage unabated. DespoRHado’s offensive line had held despite their foes utterly inundating their entrenchments with fire, since while most of the rank-and-file cyborgs had been burned out and melted away, the Gekkos and especially the Grads remained, the latter serving as nigh-impregnable barricades. Meanwhile, DespoRHado’s relentless gunfire and brute force spelled the end for most of the attacking SBR-CUR and GNR-FL0 units too, so only the elites remained.

As the newcomers approached, they could see in front of them a pair of Blazes contending with a Gekko and supporting troops. A heavily-armored cyborg had just been disarmed, his enormous black axe slamming head-first into the ground, and the man put up his dukes. Before he could throw a punch the Blaze threw two, demolishing first the cyborg’s right arm at the elbow and then his left with fiery hooks. As the cyborg reeled the Blaze wound up and plunged his fist straight through his enemy’s torso. “...Perfect!” The cyborg promptly exploded. Just then, the Gekko peppered the other Blaze with gunfire, then went in for a mighty football kick. Avoiding it just in time, the Blaze knocked it off balance with a well-aimed hook, then got floored by a sweeping turn kick. Mooing in victory, the Gekko stepped in to finish the Blaze off with a stomp. In the nick of time the Blaze rolled backward, away from the crater the Gekko left in the concrete, and the first Blaze arrived to snap the Gekko’s head back with a blazing uppercut. It staggered backward, brought its head down and pawed the earth like a bull. With a resounding moo it charged, but together the two Blazes sent forth waves of fire that the Gekko charged straight into, quickly overheating its systems and bringing it to a halt. Then a VU-REV descended on it like a bolt from the blue to smash the Gekko’s head into the ground. As the Unmanned Gear moaned the VU-REV hopped back, detaching and hurling its flaming wings like giant buzz saws to melt the Gekko into three pieces before its wings returned.

Then the three robots, warded off by inaccurate suppression fire from DespoRHado, turned on the newcomers. The Blazes charged in, and the big bird immediately spat out three fireballs to explode and carpet the ground with flame.

“That VU-REV unit is a high-level threat,” Sandalphon warned the team. “Don’t jump at it if it’s alight. It’ll only come down if it’s shot, and is only vulnerable if it’s wings are off or extinguished.” Back at her forward base, the archangel put her hand to her jaw, thinking. Then she came to a decision. “I was planning to do this when you reached DespoRHado, but…”

A sudden flash of electronic blue light went off next to Zenkichi. When he turned to look, he found himself faced with all seven feet four inches of Sandalphon, here in the flesh. She looked down at him briefly, her face impassive and her strange pupils blinking rather than her eyelids as she quickly adjusted to her new surroundings. Then she turned to face the Vandelay triple threat, an oddly futuristic staff in hand. As she turned it upside down and tucked it under her arm, its head began to spin behind her, and it became apparent that the shaft that she aimed toward the team’s enemies was actually the barrel of a rifle as tall as she was. “I will oversee this battle personally.”

Karin nodded approvingly. ”How very gracious of you- glad to see you are not merely a strategist and opportunist.”

”Wow, shes a big lady! I don’t think my shield will cover all of her. ” Blazermate said, a bit confused. She then looked at the mooing Gecko out of sheer confusion. Also… why did it have shockingly organic legs? What the heck was that thing?

”It’ll only come down when it’s been shot at, you say?” Zenkichi asked while drawing his pistols. ”Valjean and I can handle that.” With that simple declaration, he called on his Persona once more to ”Triple Down!” and circled around, taking a few shots at the VU-REV in the hopes of forcing it towards the ground.

”I’ve got a shield to give you cover, so just shoot at it. And avoid getting punched or set on fire.” Blazermate said, getting ready to deploy her projectile shield.

When Zenkichi’s Persona opened fire, Sandalphon joined in from the back of her group. Once spun up, her rifle belted out extremely bright blue bolts of energy, the speed and weight of its shots just a few steps shy of a handheld railgun’s. Those payloads plus Valjean’s Triple Down took a couple chunks out of the metallic phoenix, and unable to maintain its altitude the VU-REV descended to lessen the stress on its systems for recovery. “Well struck,” Sandalphon commented. Their efforts put the big bird in reach, but before Zenkichi could sink his teeth in, the team would need to deal with the bombastic pugilists. Both Blazes pounded the earth to send out rolling fireblasts that left a carpet of flame in their wake, and a moment after they arrived to challenge the integrity of Blazermate’s projectile shield -as well as that of the melee fighters- personally. “Capitalizing on the VU-REV will be difficult while they remain,” Sandalphon cautioned the others, taking aim from the backlines at the bird to make of the opening what she could.

”Understood. We’ll keep you covered.” Zenkichi answered simply, stowing his revolvers and hefting his greatsword before charging forward and taking a few swings at his chosen Blaze. The pugilistic machine managed to actually block one, but the second swing hit true, and on the third swing the pair exchanged heavy blows, both stumbling back. ”Not bad.” Zenkichi mumbled, before standing tall and swinging again.

The Blaze had gotten wise to him, however, and easily avoided the relatively slow swing before edging just into Zenkichi’s range and hitting with a quick jab, jumping back before the backswing could land. ”Alright, you’re clearly a different caliber than the others.” Zenkichi praised before letting out a sigh. ”Bring it!” He taunted as the two circled each other, eyes narrowed.

”Then I suppose this one is mine!” Karin said, engaging another Blaze after avoiding their fireballs. She had already battled one- would this Blaze be any different? Karin threatened the Blaze by shifting her feet just outside of his effective swinging range. She backed away from a few strikes, but instead of whiff punishing, she took the opportunity to dash away from the Blaze she was fighting and towards the one Zenkichi was circling. She turned her shoulder into the back of the robot and slammed into it, looking to send it stumbling towards Zenkichi in a very cheeky move.

Her unexpected strike proved to be just the ticket that the Blaze, already softened up a little by Zenkichi’s attacks, needed for the Seekers to break his stun gauge. His poise broke for a moment, rendering him more susceptible to being combo’d. In order to give Karin enough of a break from her own Blaze to put her plan in action, Sandalphon distracted him with a sniper shot, but his own stun wasn’t high enough to keep him locked down. As soon as he could he punched a new fire wave across the ground that swept beneath his ally and set the area aflame. By this time, the flight systems of the VU-REV recovered, and it flapped into the air. It shrieked and began to do backflips in place, a beam of condensed flame sweeping outward across the ground with each revolution to pollute the battlefield with lines of blazing fire. It managed to churn out four before Sandalphon’s third shot forced it back down towards the ground again.

Karin frowned at the Blaze she had left trying to catch up with her with that large flame wave. Though she was back to back with the enemy, she trusted Zenkichi would handle it and dropped into a kneeling crouch, taking the chip damage to block the flame wave and prevent it from hitting Zenkichi while he was ideally punishing the stunned Blaze bot.

Unfortunately pushing back in towards the Blaze would be hard with the streaks of flame in the way. With Sandalphon suppressing it, Karin walked forward to meet the Blaze in battle, looking to hop over the line of fire. Blaze took advantage and struck her out of the air. Indignant, Karin landed with a back roll and avoided a follow up overhead swing that cracked the floor. ”Simple!” She put the Blaze back on the defensive by striking with her legs, swiping at his torso and knees and preventing effective counter strikes by controlling the space between them. It swung and the fist came close, Karin watching it pass by. Then she stepped in and cracked into its knee before zooming forward with an EX-Tenko that launched the Blaze into the air with a burst of golden energy. ”Tenko!” This allowed her to combo into yet another upward palm strike that bounced it up again! For the final one it was getting out of range, so she stepped forward and slammed it away from her. Karin dashed forward as he got up, to swing, she brought the back of her fist down onto its face, elegantly crossing her feet as she did.

After that she advanced with a series of elbows and palms that crushed the metal before resetting into a grab, twisting the bot’s wrist and twirling past him, using his own body weight and strength to throw him bodily into the floor. ”Weak!” She span and brought her heel down on his head like an axe, splitting it in two and destroying the bot.

As Karin jumped in and stunned the Blaze he was fighting, Zenkichi wasted no time in taking advantage of the opportunity. He quickly activated his Fury, adrenaline burning through his blood and his vitality as his blade mercilessly cut down the machine in an invigorated flurry of blows that came much faster than his previous attacks had. After a quick series of truly devastating blows, he deactivated the self-harming ability, finishing the Blaze unit with a furious overhead slash.

”Go Karin!” Blazermate said as she healed Sandalphon as she brawled with the VU-REV. With the Blaze having been defeated, this freed up Blazermate a bit so that she could also assist in attacking the VU-REV. Calling out to Sandalphon and saying. ”You got a good gun, hit the glowing bit!” Blazermate said, pointing out the weak point of the robot, her scan ability highlighted, she decided to go in a bit herself and get some ubersaw swings on it while it was still down.

“So that’s where it is.” Sandalphon calmly adjusted her aim, waited for the spin-up, and pulled the trigger. Her rifle’s payload slammed through the armor of its upper chassis and into the VU-REV’s flame reactor, frying it. The robot squawked and dropped like a sack of bricks, twitching for a few moments until it got its reactor’s temperature under control.

As it stirred again to try to retract back into the air, Blazermate held up her shield arm which let out a loud sonic scream. With the VU-REV being at ground zero, this momentarily stunned it, which let Blazermate hit it one more time before she was forced to move away. As it flew back into the sky, Blazermate did her own bit of flying, but instead of flying into the sky, she stayed on the ground flying about and making her way to touch a few more cracks along the ground, unleashing two more purgatory ghosts that angrily zoomed at the VU-REV and detonated.

Looking battered and bruised from the hits it had already taken and the exploding ghosts, the VU-REV shot its lasers once more, aiming at Blazermate. She blocked what she could with her shield, but this only did so much to lessen the blow as she flew towards a third and final crack. Upon summoning the third ghost, the VU-REV. Decided to target the ghost, knowing it would explode if it reached it. Unfortunately not knowing what a ghost did, being a robot itself, this had no effect as the third ghost angrily zoomed into and blew up, blasting the VU-REV in a strangely bloody but ghostly explosion.

On its last legs, the robot shrieked, and readied its ultimate attack, Burning Revenge. It ignited its wings, first the left, then the right, then the left, then wrapped both around itself as its core flared up dangerously.

“Block in time!” Sandalphon called to Blazermate urgently, analyzing the pattern as fast as she could based on the similar stunt from the Blazer earlier. “Or….evade?”

The next second, it fired off a perfectly-aimed flame beam from its left wing, then right, then left again, before twisting in midair with the last of its strength to let rip an unblockable fire wheel.

Blazermate did just that, blocking the first two lasers, with her shield taking the damage for her. The third hit managed to disable her shield, with the extra damage going to Blazermate herself, but that was all she needed as she was going to dodge the big attack anyway, barely flying out of the way with her metal kimono heating up quite a bit by the heat. But she dodged towards another crack, which as the VU-REV had to cool down after such an attack, another ghost zoomed at it once Blazermate released it from its purgatory. Its impact blew the weakened robot to smithereens in a fiery blast strong enough for the human Seekers to feel it in their bones.

Zenkichi let out a heavy sigh as the wave of heat washed over him, breathing heavily for a few moments. ”Oh my god that’s miserable. Leather and heat do not go well together…”

The VU-REV’s spectacular demise heralded not just the end of this fight, but the Vandelay incursion against DespoRHado’s entrenchments. As the Seekers gathered, adrenaline dying doing, Sandalphon turned her weapon in her hand to hold it like a staff and approached DespoRHado with a calm, purposeful stride. “I trust I don’t need to introduce myself,” she stated impassively, connecting herself directly to all the cyborgs that survived their trial by fire so that none could avoid hearing her. “In accordance with the established operational parameters, I have secured on-site reinforcements to provide assistance with the elimination of Vandelay’s Financial Department and the seizure of its assets. Move aside.”

“Yes, ma’am,” the squad leader replied without delay. “All Grads, disengage and form up!”

DespoRHado’s mighty armored siege engines released their pitons and slide across the stone to open the way for the Seekers. Not breaking stride, Sandalphon moved calmly between the lines. Only when she became aware of a noisy disturbance in the water off of Circuit Royal did she turn her gaze from the Atrium’s entrance. After a moment, a gigantic shape leaped over the perimeter facilities of the campus and came down on the Atrium’s front lawn, sending out a wall of air and dust that extinguished the leftover flame. Having taken the field against the Machines in the Valley of Ruin yesterday, Zenkichi would recognize the unmistakable metal monstrosity he witness on the way back to Midgar: the titanic Metal Gear Ray. It shook the water of Regatta Bay from its immense wings like a duck, then began to stomp forward.

Despite the enormous possible threat, Sandalphon remained stoic. “Stay calm,” she whispered to Zenkichi through the glyph. “All part of the plan.” Indeed, as the Ray approached, it did not engage its weapons. Instead the awe-inspiring machine stepped right over the Seekers and the DespoRHado defensive line to smash through the front of the Atrium. Inside the vast, lavish space stood a colossal statue of Kale Vandelay, several times larger than the Ray and almost as tall as the Atrium itself. Khamsin was standing there too, and though his fused mech stood tall and proud the Ray practically dwarfed it when the Metal Gear approached. Once it drew near, the Ray leaned down and opened its jaws, allowing Khamsin to climb aboard as it made its critical calculations. Then the giant used all its might to thrash itself upward, hurling Khamsin like a boulder from a trebuchet straight toward the Chief Financial Officer’s office, many hundreds of feet off the ground.

“YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!”

Following in Ray's footsteps, Sandalphon watched him disappear from sight. The sound of a lot of glass shattering could be heard a moment later. “I…see,” she remarked, affected more than she would’ve expected by the ridiculous sight. “So that was his plan.” After another moment she did an about-face to address the Seekers. “You must follow in his footsteps,” she told them matter-of-factly. Above them, a whole host of what looked like large boxes floated throughout the Atrium. Some of them had little parks on them, others offices complete with cubicles and robot workers. A variety of sky-lines twisted and turned all over the place. “Through whatever means you can. My part is done, and I cannot redeploy to assist you again this mission. If you need me, however, feel free to call.” She closed her eyes and bowed politely to the Seekers, then abandoned them, teleporting all the way back to mission control in a flash.

”Wait… do we need to fight that giant robot later or am I confused about the whole situation? Or is there ANOTHER giant robot and we’re going to see a huge, HUGE kaiju fight?” Blazermate said, scratching her head.

After another moment Sandalphon’s voice reached the team in reply. “I would recommend not engaging the Ray. In addition to being very dangerous, it would take far more time to dispose of than you have. It shouldn’t target you without cause, but I would give it a wide berth, just in case.”

”We’re already planning to fight one giant robot, no need to add more. Well…two if Konoe’s still got that thing he had in the Metaverse somehow…” Zenkichi added, still very wary of the Metal Gear before them. ”Let’s, uh…get going.” He suggested.

A loud shout suddenly rang out from behind everyone. “DEAD ON!” When the Seekers looked over, Karin and Blazermate at least would see a familiar face. A one-eyed cyborg ninja had just staggered one of the Grads, then kicked its forward plating to send it spinning like a propeller. After slicing through it the newcomer leaped over the Grad and split it in half with a single slice across its center mass, leaving its red-hot halves to fall apart as he landed. It was none other than Raiden, back to settle his score with DespoRHado and the Winds of Destruction. “Kept you waiting, huh?” he grinned, his robotic lower jaw giving him an almost skeletal leer. “Hope you people saved some fun for me!”

“DespoRHado’s nemesis,” Sandalphon observed, taken slightly aback. “Though it looks like he may be biting off more than even he can chew, his presence puts the mission in jeopardy. Please hurry to the objective, everyone.”

Raiden’s assassination of a Grad kicked DespoRHado into high alert. The other three Grads and the remaining cyborgs immediately swarmed him, and as if that wasn’t enough, the idle Ray stomped over as well. In doing so he inadvertently opened the way for the others, though whether or not he’d be able to take on all this heavy metal himself was anyone’s guess, though not necessarily their problem. Raiden had already demonstrated that he was a loose cannon, and not necessarily the team’s ally, especially if he planned to exterminate the same faction that the Seekers might be able to use against Shinra and Konoe.

Shaking his head in frustration, Zenkichi sighed. ”I can’t believe that lunatic! I’m no fan of these guys myself, but to go against them single-handed…? He’s insane.” Looking around the atrium, his eyes narrowed at the sky-rails and floating islets all over the place, before turning to Blazermate. ”Would you be able to fly up to one of those islands? I don’t have a hook for the sky-rails, but there’s gotta be some way to get around here without one. If they can be moved, that might be our way up.”

”I’m sure Mister Raiden will be fine.” Karin said with a dismissive wave of her hand. Karin fired her grappling hook at an upper portion of the wall, pulling herself up. She took a moment to situate herself, pushing off, and fired at a nearby floating section. Then she zipped quickly up to it and looked over it down at Zenkichi.

”I suppose we’ll have to find a way down for you.” She considered. ”I shall look as well.” She began to connect her grappling hooks to the closest island and pulling herself up, ascending higher and higher among the man-made technological pieces of land. She didn’t quite know what she was looking for, a switch or some kind of useful implement.

”I got you Zenkichi. You're a lot younger than the last guy I had to carry around, hehe.” Blazermate said before scooping up Zenkichi in her arms and flying up to the island with the rest of the group, that being Karin.

”Oh, well, splendid work, Blazermate.” Karin said, before continuing on her more manual mode of travel.

It would be a ways to go before the team reached the same heights that Khamsin managed to, but theirs was a simple and effective strategy. It wasn’t long until they reached the overlook that preceded the hall to the Head of Finance’s office, itself richly decorated with miniature gardens of colorful little trees and leafy bamboo shoots, the area decked out in gold, white tile, black marble, and dark wood. It’d be absurdly classy if not for doors dead ahead, ripped asunder by a giant rocket-propelled chainsaw axe.

”I think I prefer flying via airplanes…” Zenkichi admitted, a little queasy, after being carried up. ”There are medabots that turn into planes, but they are a lot less of an easy ride I assure you~.” Blazermate said as she put him down. Them then launched about via the man cannons that were situated on the various floating islands. ”Wow this place is pretentious. Like, really? Ego much?” He added as a final comment once they reached the doors to Finance.

Karin regarded the splendor with a rub of her chin. ”It is a bit garish.” She said. ”Clearly someone more focused on showcasing wealth than interior design.” Karin criticized. With everyone’s thoughts on Roquefort’s choice in aesthetics cleared away, they could finally begin the last leg of their journey. Into the belly of the beast they went, driven by the sounds of combat up ahead.

”Beret!” Beatriz snapped her fingers. ”That’s the fuckin’ ticket.” Despite all of the crazy sights in this place, for some reason this ‘painter’s hat’ had really captured Bea’s imagination. She had a small smile on her face. When it was lowered so Bea could get a look at it, she raised her hands as if she wanted to grab it, or maybe even put it on. But she didn’t, so her hands just hovered near the hat. Her hands were rough and brown, with clipped fingernails.

”Right, no, I guess not. You could just be, uh, y’know, French or some shit like that.” Beatriz nodded thoughtfully.

”Are you French?” She asked, raising her eyebrows. ”Like, from France? I’m from Brazil.” She pointed at the ground beneath them.

Beatriz stepped away from Rosie and the hat so she wouldn’t have to look up as much to keep talking. Beatriz heard yet another shout from the floating girl and briefly glanced over to see what was the matter, but mostly she was focused on her conversation with the enigmatic Rosie who had saved her day. Beatriz felt obligated to talk to her as long as Rosie wanted too. That made a thought occur to her.

”Oh, shit- I’m not- I’m not buggin’ you, am I?” She asked with a smile, scratching the back of her head. ”It’s just, uh, I’m kinda here by myself until I ring up my family.”
