“Do you really think the killer is one of us?” Seravee asked the group. Her arms covered her son, who had taken refuge to his mother’s side. “One of us? We rode that bus for four hours. Four hours together and now someone is dead? I don’t believe it. I really don’t. Now you’ll have to excuse me-”
“Ma’am, the body of Drakel Barns is lying in the front yard and you cain’t believe it? You must be dumber than a sack o’ wool if you need more proof than ‘at. We have a killer here with us, whether you wont a’ believe it or not.”
Seravee glared at Foxxie, her face turning a deep red. “You know what, I’m starting to believe you had something to do with it. You and that… ‘friend’ of yours,” her arms released her son as she pointed over to Shy. He looked up at her accusation, shocked more than anything. “Yeah, you. You found him! You and Foxxie did. Obviously you’re the ones who did it.”
“Yes, it’s our fault that we found the man. The rest of you lot just walked right on by and didn’t blink an eye. Where were the rest of you when Drakel was down? You didn’t know he was dead. For all you knew, he passed out from some… diabetic reason or something. Now, don’t go throwing fingers when you have no idea what is going on.” Shy had stood up by this point, his voice raising as he spoke. He was glad Bea was upstairs with the other children, but he was sure she probably heard him. After her mother died, he vowed to protect her no matter what, but if he couldn’t protect her from his own anger, what kind of father was he? That didn’t matter now of course. He had to be this way. This is how he had to protect her. He had to get angry. He had to defend himself and everyone else. It’s just how things had to be.
“You got mighty defensive,” Nex injected from the corner. His voice was smooth, almost calming. “Now, I’m not saying we do anything rash here, but Seravee has a point. You guys were the first to find him. That is usually a red flag when it comes to homicides.”
“But we didn’t-”
“How can you be so sure? Sure, you can be sure for yourself. But what about her?”
“Sir, I don’t know what yer bargainin’ at right now, but I don’t like the sound of it.”
Nex looked around the room before finally looking down at his hands. “Look, I’m not accusing you guys of anything. I just know the facts. No one could have put a knife in Drakel except one of us. Sure, he could have somehow fallen on it, but he would have to be laying on it and that isn’t a common thing. Someone here murdered Drakel and we have to get to the bottom of it.”
K-97 looked up from his small corner, a place that he guaranteed was safe from spiders and muck. “What do you suppose we do?”
Brown eyes surveyed the room before the smooth voice spoke, “Well, I have an idea..”
The house was falling apart. There was no doubt about it. Random holes made a strange pattern in the floor. Old leaves took shelter in nooks and crannies around the corners. Nothing was safe in that old house, not even the house itself. Jordan, Zed, Nightwing, Nargle, and Mbl had all formed their own little group soon after getting off the bus. It made sense seeing as they were all teenagers. Somehow Jordan and his two friends were able to go away on their own little trip, away from their parent’s gaze. Nargle and Mbl weren’t so lucky. They always had to be watched and when they weren’t, Mbl was to keep an eye out. It was a bunch of bull, really. It was because of their teenage angst that the group bonded.
“You know… what if this whole thing turned into like.. a Mafia game?” Jordan asked the group, his imagination always wired.
“Mafia? What’s that?” Nargle asked. She had started taking a liking to the older boy, and always wanted to make sure he knew she was interested.
“Only the coolest game in the world!” he replied, throwing his arms with enthusiasm.
Zed rolled his eyes. “Oh come on, Jordan. It’s not that great.”
“Really, it’s not. It’s just a bunch of people killing people to find a killer,” Nightwing sighed.
Jordan tossed them both a look, but continued to smile. “Well, yeah… but it’s much more than that. Basically--”
“Wow, that sounds really fun,” Mbl said first. It had only taken Jordan about half an hour to explain it, but she stayed interested.
“But really scary… if that happened, what would happen to us? Are kids exempt?”
Jordan’s laugh was interrupted by a loud bang upstairs. “What was that?”
“Let’s go check it out! Maybe we can catch the killer!” Mbl said excitedly as she stood up and made a run for the stairs. She had made it to the room where the noise happened first and peaked through the keyhole of the door..
Inside Miss Nat fumbled with her dress, her blonde hair a tangled mess. “Alphie, what didn’t you check the table first?”
“It looked fine to me… I didn’t know it would break like that.”
Nat went over to the window, peered into one of the many broken pieces of glass and tried to fix her hair. “I love you, but sometimes you are so foolish. To think that I left California just to hitch a ride with a bumbling baboon from Utah.” She chuckled some at her last statement and went back over the the man who was buttoning his blue dress-shirt. Her soft hands patted him on the cheek as she stood on her toes for a kiss. “I’ll be back tonight,” she whispered with a wink and started to walk off, her hand barely grazing his crotch. “And don’t worry.. your buddies won’t find out.”
Mbl flattened herself against the wall just in time for Nat to leave the room and walk down the stairs, pulling at her dress as she went.
“Kids, we need you all in the dining room. It’s important.”
Red-faced from laughter, Mbl looked up and rolled her eyes. “Are you serious?”
“Mbl, stop.” Nargle snapped, standing up. “Come on, guys. Let’s go.” The rest of the teens followed suit.
Everyone was there. Alpha shifted uncomfortably, tossing glances over to Nat whose low-cut dress seemed lower cut than usual. Rilla and Awson sat beside him, talking over things between themselves. To their left was Jster and Seravee, along with the three kids. Nargle insisted she be beside Jordan and to his left were his two friends. Shy stood in the doorway with his hand firmly on Bea’s shoulder and Foxxie beside Miss Nat and k-97. The circle was complete was Nex.
“I guess you’re all wondering why we are here.. We have all come to the conclusion that the killer is someone among us. And since it seems that we will be here for a few more days, we need to take extra measures to ensure the safety of everyone else. That being said, it would be wise to go ahead and weed out the killer now than all die at his hand.” Nex cleared his throat before looking back at the group and pulling Drakel’s pistol from his own back pocket. “The killer will be dealt with quickly and humanely. He won’t feel a thing.”
“You seem quick to accuse,” Nat said, her voice pure lust. “You want people to die here. I don’t see anyone else agreeing with you.”
“He’s right, Miss Nat. We have to do this. It’s the only way we can survive,” Shy insisted.
“Sounds like you guys just want to do the killing around here. I don’t want any part of it. Murders… the lot of you. I’m leaving,” she snapped, standing up and walking to the door. Shy and Foxxie moved to let her pass. “I won’t have any blood on my hands.”
It took a second after Nat left for the voting to begin and three hours for it to end. Awson had been the one to count the votes and his face turned pale as he finished. He handed his notebook over to Alpha who immediately stood up.
“What is the meaning of this? You expect me to be a killer? I may not be a perfect man, but I am NOT a killer!” Alpha argued.
“This will be best for everyone Alpha, if you just let things happen. I promise, it won’t hurt you. I’ll make sure of that,” Nex said, standing up and walking to the man. “We need to get this over with.”
Rilla and Awson looked at each other before standing up and taking Alpha’s arms. It had to be done. Once the group was outside, a shot rang out across the countryside. Alpha was dead.
But, that wasn’t the only shot that rang out that night. Before Nex was able to make it back inside, he collapsed to the ground, a gun-shot wound to the head.
“This is too much. We have to get out of here..” Seravee said to Jster, her voice shaking. “How many more people have to die? We can run. We can find another car. They can take us somewhere.”
“No, I don’t think we can…” Jster said, reaching his arm around his wife and bringing her to him. “What can we tell the cops? We’re witnesses here. We can’t leave..”
Seravee wiped her eyes before looking up at him, kissing him gently. “I love you. Don’t let anything happen to us.”
“I love you more.” He said simply, pushing a stray strand of hair behind his wife’s ear. “No one will hurt you or the kids. We have people watching and as long as you all don’t lose sight of each other, nothing can happ-”
A scream tore through the building. “Daddy! Daddy!” Bea screamed, running from the room. “Daddy!” Blood stained her dress and hands, as tears stained her face. “Daddy!”
