The school bus chugged the last stretch of road before swerving up the tree-lined driveway of Finnesburg Research Facility. It's contents - an assortment of bad-tempered teachers and impatient teenagers - were all reaching the end of their tether and when the building sailed into view, it's name declared on a neat sign besides it, there was a collective sigh of relief.

Finnesburg Research Facility was not an eye-catching building. The expanse of grey-brick blocks stretched over roughly the size of a football pitch and was surrounded by a thick fringe of oak trees that left a shadow over the whole institute. A limp ivy plant clung to one wall but it was exactly what it seemed; a lone, half-hearted attempt to soften the angular exterior - albeit, a not very successful one. There was no singing birds nor wildlife - the only sign of life was the occasional flash of a white lab coat through the small, darkened windows.

The day was hot. Understatement, Pen mused as she attempted to rub the layer of sweat from her forehead. She had been stuck on this damned bus for nearly two hours and she felt as though she wanted to murder someone. She drained the last drop from her water bottle that she was holding and tossed the empty container into her rucksack. She nodded as she realised her bus seat partner - Erica, a chatty kid who was mildly annoying but not girly enough to repulse Pen - was slowing in her conversation speel and would soon need reassurance she was being listened to.

"Look; we're here!" Erica suddenly announced, the first thing to grab Pen's attention in quite a while. Her eyes widened and she strained a glimpse at the boring, grey building - some kind of rock research place - as the bus rumbled to a jerky halt. Pen was on her feet before it had even stopped. She dashed to the front as Mrs Fliss, a middle-aged woman with purple glasses, short, dark hair and sharp, blue eyes, tried to control her students.

"Wait!" Mrs Fliss cried shrilly, as Pen launched herself off the bus, followed by a steady flow of other various students. The other teachers had abandoned Mrs Fliss, leaving her the impossible task of discipline.

"I need to read out the groups!"

Pen groaned loudly, which earned a reproachful glare from Mrs Fliss. Rather than relent, Pen merely scowled, crossing her arms as she leant against the side of the bus. When the driver barked her a warning, she rolled her eyes and pushed herself away.

Mrs Fliss fished a piece of paper from the bus seat besides her and cleared her throat, plodding out onto the tarmac the bus had parked up on. She grinned, relishing in the pain that she was about to inflict on her students. She reeled off the first set of names, most of them the cutesy, popular cheerleaders that sucked up to the teachers. To their faces, at least. A round of giggles signalled their delight at being grouped together.

"And he second group is...Penelope Galloway" Pen cringed at the use of her full name. Just urg." Saxon Evert, Alvira Haiblud, Ula Lupita, Terraline Gray, Whitney Nylund, Dante Delacoste, David Vedman, Jesse Silk and Sam Blake. Stand over there, group two, please.”

Pen made a face. Not a single one of her friends – most of them she didn’t really know, but she was fairly certain that they were not the type of people she usually got on with.

“But Miss…” Pen whined, however Mrs Fliss was already shushing her, bustling around as she read out the third group. Pen slapped her hand on her face as she slunk over to the small patch of grass at the back of the tarmac, where Mrs Fliss had insisted her group collect. Instead of politely waiting for further instruction, she threw herself down on the grass and shoved her hands behind her head, whistling to herself, wishing that this fieldtrip would hurry up and be over, already.
The Head of Finnesburg Research Facility, Peter Goode – that’s Dr Goode, to you – watched the bus, full of snotty teenage and their shepherds, pull up on the drive outside the facility, their scruffy vehicle marring the pristine grounds. From his window, he could them file off the bus and his lips curled in disgust. Children.

He shuddered.

He made a last minute call to reception, checking that any remnants of project C had been removed from immediate view. They had to ship in a load of lousy fossils just to accommodate for this lot; the authorities had been making calls. Asking what the institute proposed, to fufil it’s purpose of benefitting the public.

The cheek! Just because their research wasn’t short term or didn’t involve saving the pandas or any environmental rubbish like that. But they couldn’t reveal their research to the public yet. They wouldn’t understand. Most of them are uneducated – if they found out, their narrow, little minds would brand their research as ‘cruel’ and ‘unethical’. But it’s merely collateral damage. Towards a greater good. If only people could understand that. But they couldn’t.

It was Pilot’s examination today. The first prototype – and, my, the result was better than anyone could have ever anticipated. Used in warfare, the effects would be devastating…for the opposition. Sometimes, Dr Goode had to take a moment to reflect on the monumental achievement that he had single-handedly directed and simply marvel at his own genius. As soon as a conclusion for all their efforts reached and fully tested, he will be rich. A millionaire. A qudadrillionaire. A Septillionaire…

But they needed some evidence that their research was worthwhile for the public, now. So – using every scrap of his extensive geology knowledge – he had blagged Finnesburg as a mineral examination center. The authorities had lapped the whole thing up and all they needed to stay under the radar was host something for the public. A school trip seemed ideal. Full of dumb kids who wouldn’t even read the leaflets.

He took a sip from the teacup on his desk.

The sooner this day was over – and those ignorant kids were back on that bus and back to where they came from – the better.

Whitney got off the bus just as Mrs Fliss was finished listing names for the first group of students. Whitney noticed she was grinning, "This is going to suck." He said under his breath when he noticed her grin widen. As she continued to list off names, he couldn't help but think of those names and who exactly they belonged to.

"And the second group is... Penelope Galloway," 'A tomboy with a less than acceptable attitude. Nothing interesting, next.' "Saxon Evert," 'Class clown with a record for being extra creative with his pranks.' "Alvira Haiblud," 'Some punk with a knack for scaring the daylight out of her enemies.' "Ula Lupita," 'I don't know why, but I get the sense she isn't... Genuine.' "Terraline Gray," 'Aside from some stray traits, she isn't all that remarkable.' "Whitney Nylund,"

"Are you serious right now?" Whitney didn't have the energy to put up these sorts of people. Some of them might actually try and talk to him, and today he just wanted to be alone.

"Dante Delacoste," 'Amateur MMA fighter. Don't make him mad.' "David Vedman,"

"Really? Was this necessary?" Whitney asked no one in particular. Whitney was not a fan of David, since he's know for trying to talk to loners like him, and has been actively avoiding him since freshman year.

"Jesse Silk," 'Depressing to be around.' "and Sam Blake." 'Some rebel who needs to learn his manners.'

Whitney sighed. Of all the people in the entire school, why was he grouped with all of them? And then Whitney realized two things. The teachers don't like anyone in this group, and they intentionally put them all together because nobody in it would be happy.

"Stand over there, group two, please." Mrs Fliss said, still with a wide grin. Whitney slowly walked over to the groups meeting spot, eyeing the teacher as he walked by.

"You did this on purpose." He muttered as he walked by, even though she couldn't hear him. He sat down upon reaching the area, barely taking note of Penelope's- or rather, Pen's existence.

Saxon lazed around on the back seat, having made sure he was on the bus first so he could get it. As people had approached to sit next to him he had made sure to block the seat with multiple bags and stare at them until they found a new seat. In this manner he had secured himself a pair of seats from which he could place his feet on and kick back. The first part of the journey had been fairly amusing with everyone chattering away, but he soon grew bored and unscrewed the water from his bottle and filling up the cap. The guy in front would be his first victim today.

He moved towards the edge of is seat, hovering the cap of water over the guys head - who seemed to be sleeping - and slowly pouring the water on top of the thick set of hair. He stifled a chuckle, but the guy didn't stir and so this time he refilled the cap and now balanced it on top of the guys head. He paused a moment as he saw a few people glance his way before throwing them a playful look and then poking the guy hard, "Hey! Hey, look at that" he called, watching with glee as the guy awoke suddenly to look out the window - the water spilling down his front and onto his trousers. Saxon erupted into a fit of laughter, eventually calming down to say, "Never mind it was just a tree" although the statement in itself cracked him up again along with a few of the others around him. The guy was not impressed and stared daggers at him the next 30 minutes, but there was no use telling the teacher since they couldn't exactly do much when they were on a bus heaving full of kids. After having been entertained he slipped his earphones in and half attempted to sleep for the rest of the journey.

When someone screamed that they were here, he sat up - quickly shoving everything into his bag and already edging towards the isle. This bus journey was far to long and he dreaded having to go back again. But since he was here he may as well make the most of it. He eagerly listened in to the groupings and frowned slightly as he recognised none of the people he was with. However the upside was he had fresh new targets for his pranks for the day. As soon as the teacher moved out of the way he kept down the bus, or well tried to... The downside of being at the back was that it was the furthest from the front and hence took ages for him to get off.

However once his feet finally touched the ground he did a full 360 on the spot to take in the view before moving over towards where his group was gathering. A cheery smile laid upon his face, he examined each one briefly wondering who would make a nice start to his day, prank wise of course. The guy on the bus had been amusing, but nothing in comparison to what he's used to. He needed someone who would have a big reaction. But for now he plonked himself down on the ground besides a female who it seemed had had a similar idea.

Dante Delacoste jumped from the top step of the bus and stretched his arms. The teacher was reading off names the group "Saxon Evert, Alvira Haiblud, Ula Lupita, Terraline Gray, Whitney Nylund, Dante Delacoste, David Vedman, Jesse Silk and Sam Blake". Dante looked to where his group had begun to gather Well then this is bound to be an interesting day to say the least. He didn't know most of them but he had seen Saxon around a few times and the guy was alright. Walking up to the group leisurly Dante raises one hand and says "Sup guys how's it goin?".

During the entire bus ride, Alvira had been blasting as much music into her head as possible. When she listened to all of her Dubstep songs, she switched to whatever else she had remaining, which was a mixture of Deathmetal, Screamo, and some bands people didn't even know about. Alvira was happily sitting in one of the back seats of the bus, she was on the left side and lucky for her the left side backseat was only a one seater. Her music was turned up all the way in hopes of drowning out everyone's meaningless shouting voices. Alvira was currently daydreaming like usual when she noticed a few students bringing their attention to the windows to look out, she paused her current song for a moment and looked up. Noticing the building she stashed her headphones into her bag, she never liked ear-buds and could most likely be labled a Headphone Junkie because of her liking for bulky headphones, and stashed her mp3 into her left pocket. Her right pocket had her Pennywise clown teeth hidden away. She had gotten them for her birthday one year and has never parted with them since she loved scaring people, and she loved evil clowns.

Alvira listened to the groups being called out, not really interested in the whole thing and already beginning to get lost in her thoughts.

'....Son...of...a...bitch...' Alvira let out a frustrated sigh. She was stuck with a group of normies. Well, except for one. Whitney was interesting, but Alvira had no idea how to get that guy to talk without becomming annoyed with her. As Alvira, finally, got off the bus, she stuck her hand into her right pocket and quickly put in the clown teeth while Mrs. Fliss wasn't looking in her direction. When Alvira began to pass Mrs. Fliss to go over to where her group was gathering, Mrs. Fliss looked at her and flashed her a smile. 'Perfect...' Alvira thought, 'Don't want to be ruuuddee, hehehe' She quickly grinned back at Mrs. Fliss, completely baring her sadistic sharp clown teeth in a twisted demonic smile. Mrs. Fliss shrieked in response. Acting like nothing happened Alvira stopped smiling and continued to go over to her group, quickly slipping the teeth back out of her mouth, into it's case, and back into her right pocket. She couldn't help but snicker at the reaction she got from the teacher as she plopped herself down onto the grass, just about three feet away from Whitney. Instead of trying to make a conversation she just stared off at nothing in perticular, zoning out, again.

Terraline had been sketching away in her notebook, not really paying all too much attention. With one earphone in her ear and her feet up on the seat, she sat alone in the back wearing a simple yet pretty white dress and jean jacket. The sound of her name finally stole her attention and she glanced up. None of the names in the group drew much interest. She was sure her name didn't really cause excitement among her peers either. Most knew her for that quiet girl that usually just followed along. Just for that, she enjoyed saying something completely "uncharacteristic" of her to shock them all. Terry was the type that had a sarcastic remark to everything but kept it to herself It was funny how people thought they knew everything about a person without ever truly knowing them. It was easier when you were practically invisible. Popular kids and unpopular kids both stayed out of your way and there was no a worry in the world. What reputation was there to uphold when you didn't have one at all?

With a sigh, she collected her bag and got off the bus. She joined the group in the designated spot and kept her head down. She gave a small smile to Dante, who had greeted them, and stayed silent. All of them were familiar to her and she knew more about them than they would ever guess. Terraline was definitely the wallflower type who stayed to the wall and observed everyone else. They had certainly grouped a bunch of completely different people together this time. Her gaze fixated on Saxon a moment. He was certainly up to no good as per usual. This would be interesting.

Ula had been napping on the bus until the person sitting next to her woke her up.
"we're here, wake up," her seat mate told her as he shook her awake. Ula listed as the groups were called. So I'm in group two. Don't think I recognize any of my group members, Ula thought as she headed to where her group was meeting up.

Dave was lounging in the seat, legs crossed, and hands at his sides when the bus arrived at the facility. He stared out the window at the bleak compound and shrugged, reclining back a little. He was kinda tired, didn't feel like looking at fossils or whatever stupid crap they had put in today. Resting was just fine to him. Mrs. Fliss, one of the teachers on the trip, yelled in her grating voice to the bus of teenagers the groups. Dave picked up his name being in the second group, but paid no mind. Mrs. Fliss continued speaking, her words lost on him. It was just a field trip after all, nothing too complicated needed to be said anyway.

A loud "AHEM!" broke Dave from his reverie. He opened one eye to see the same Mrs. Fliss standing over him, scowling, eyebrow twitching ever so slightly, lips pursed together, and an angry gleam in her eye. Dave grinned foolishly.
"What are you smiling about, Mr. Vedman?! You are supposed to be OUTSIDE with your GROUP!" she screeched at him, causing Dave to grimace.

"Alright, alright, my bad. Kinda daydreamed for a second, lost track of time, y'know..." Dave explained, forcing a smile. Mrs. Fliss huffed again and frowned at Dave as he walked down the aisle and got off the bus. Brushing some of his long, red hair out of his face, he looked around and saw the rest of his group, a few of which he recognized, sitting in a grassy area. The only person he recognized was Whitney. He had been trying to talk to her all year without much success, trying to get her to warm up a little. Dave thought she wouldn't be very happy to see him, so he didn't approach her. He gave the group he was with a wholehearted attempt at a warm smile, and sat down. He laid back and started staring at the cloudless, blue sky and began to daydream again. He hoped that this field trip would at least be somewhat interesting, otherwise this boring research facility would be simply another place to talk in.

"You don't even know what you're talking about! Flash could totally beat Superman in a race!"

"Superman could just beat him up! The race would be finished by then."

"But that's against the rules!"

Jesse signed heavily as he unwillingly listened to the conversation of the two geeks seated in front of him. They had been talking the whole ride, and not to mention that the girl seated behind him was blasting screamo so loud he could hear it himself. It would be a wonder if she didn't go deaf by the time they reached the facility. He banged his head on the back of the geeks' seat over and over, the repetitive thudding helping him to stay calm, but they continued on as if they didn't feel a thing. In the background he could hear the chatter and giggles of his new school's peppy cheerleaders, and it made him want to cut his own ears out with a dull knife. If only his father hadn't taken his cellphone away, and for such a stupid reason. It would at least give him something less irritating to listen to. "Superman can fly," Jesse mumbled, staring down at his lap. "Therefore it's an unfair race."

One of the geeks twisted in his seat to stare back at him. "You're not even into comics, Jesse Silk," the geek said suspiciously. "Your parents pay the teachers to raise your grades. What would you know anyway?"

Jesse felt his blood begin to boil. He pictured himself winding back and letting a punch go right into the geek's face, breaking his nose and knocking off those stupid glasses. Just the image of it satisfied him. As he opened his mouth to say something smart back, a jump out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. Whatever had happened, he had missed it, but the students that had seen it were laughing, and the boy seated across the aisle had a bit of water running down his clothes. "Never mind it was just a tree," said the culprit, and Jesse's eyes moved to rest on Saxon's mischievous face.

"What a clown," he mumbled, snarling at him. He knew Saxon, it seemed like the jokester had some popularity, but not much in Jesse's opinion. Jesse turned to look out the window. "Can't even sit quiet for an hour without trying to get attention," he said to himself. "Great Jesse, you're surrounded by a bunch of losers." In the window, he could see the reflection of the girl behind him, Alvira. The crazy girl. Another clown, just like Saxon.

Jesse exhaled loudly and groaned, just as the dull-looking building came into sight. Before the bus even managed to stop, students were already rushing to get off. Jesse grabbed his backpack which had taken up the seat beside him--due to the fact that no one wished to sit with him, which didn't really surprise him--and slung it on. He stood, wearing dark slacks, a white long-sleeved button-down shirt, and a golden colored vest. Even though he hated this kind of attire, Jesse always prided himself on dressing well. As the teacher began reading off the groups, the realization of exactly all who were in his group sickened him. Jesse figured that as long as he kept his mouth shut the day would go by smoothly, but he couldn't promise that. He just hoped Dante didn't try to start something with him.

Jesse waited for Saxon and Alvira to pass him by. His eyes caught onto a face that had piqued his interest: Terraline Gray. Her dress was as bland as her personality, but Jesse had imagined himself talking to her. He found himself mildly interested in her; for her to be so quiet, she had to be hiding something interesting. Another female in his group, Penelope--he refused to call her 'Pen'--had already gotten outside. Penelope, such a pretty name for such a boyish girl. Jesse knew that if he had a sister, his father would never let her dress like that. And now here he was, in a group with Penelope Galloway, bland Terraline Gray, crazy Alvira, Dante-wannabe-MMA-what's-his-face, and Saxon, whom he knew would irritate him to the very depths of his soul. What were the odds?

After most had exited the bus, Jesse felt it was his turn to leave. He eased pass Mrs. Fliss like a ghost, as she lectured a red-haired boy about still being on the bus. He met eyes with the bus driver as he descended the few stairs, communicating a silent message of pity to the poor man. How much did he get paid for this? Surely not enough. The air felt good on Jesse's skin and his eyes landed on Penelope first. He sauntered over quietly, taking a peek at Alvira's zoned-out eyes, once again feeling a lurch of sickness. This trip would surely be Hell.

There was once a time when sleep brought dreams. Dreams were nice, pleasant, and usually involved some kind of food. He used to love sleeping; lazing around all day. But sleep no longer brought dreams. If it did, they weren't pleasant. His sleeps weren't typical; they could last hours, days, weeks. When Pilot wasn't being trained, on a mission, or otherwise being used, he was in an induced coma. It gave him less time to sit around and think; he wasn't supposed to think.

When he was first brought in, when he was still the dumb kid named Isaiah, learning not to think was hard.

Straps across his legs, his arms, and his torso. The table he was stretched out across was particularly hard and uncomfortable. His eyes were wide with fear as guys in white coats lowered a funny looking helmet over his head. He was terrified; he cried, he struggled, he - felt nothing but blinding pain.

Training to obey orders, no matter how inhumane, wasn't easy. It hurt. Back in those days,

Nothing hurt much anymore. He didn't think the things he wasn't supposed to. He did the things he was told. Sometimes, if you get hurt enough times, everything just kind of goes numb. He didn't feel the prick of the needle that put him to sleep, for however long they wanted. He didn't care that they shipped him all around the country to be poked and tested on. He didn't feel the second needle poked into his arm to wake him up. He didn't ever know where he was, or why he was there, but he did know one thing for certain:

His name was Pilot, and he would do as they said.

Pen watched as the reluctant gaggle of kids slowly gathered around her, but she kept her eyes firmly fixed on the deep blue of the cloudless sky above her. This heat wave had been going on for a few days, now, meaning her temper would be on a short leash today. And, typically, she had just been thrown into a situation which would undoubtedly require every scrap of her patience.

It wasn't going to end well.

Mrs Fliss and one of the other teachers - who sighed, having drawn the short straw to be roped into helping Mrs Fliss - disappeared into the building to inform the rock research (yawn) staff that they had arrived. The first to join her; Whiskey or Whitney - or whatever the kid was called - seemed to determined to ignore her and she could hardly blame him. She didn't want to be in this group as much as he did. When Saxon, the school's infamous prankster, had sat down near her and she had nearly groaned out-loud. Though she had to admit he was funny, she did not want to end up on the receiving end of one his pranks, especially today. And unfortunately, she had a one in ten chance of doing so.

Next was some teen called Dante who Pen could vaguely recall was some kind of fighter - and she certainly wouldn't be picking him a fight with him any time soon, however tempted. She knew when to shut up, however much other may think otherwise. He was the first to say anything - he reckoned himself one of the 'good' guys. But guys who fought for a hobby had to have a vicious streak somewhere, surely, she mused. She didn't bother replying.

The girl with the weird, brightly-coloured hair drifted over to the area - Alvira, was it? - and proceeded to zone out, staring blankly into space. Pen was tempted to swat her hand in front of the girl's vacant eyes but decided against any unnecessary interaction with her group members, especially one that allegedly carried around teeth - human? shark? - in her pocket, according to the rumours (who does that?). She didn't want to start a fight. Yet.

Try as she might, Pen could not recollect ever seeing the next girl around school. She seemed ever so slightly familiar - a ghost, of a ghost of a memory - but she was the sort of girl who didn't draw attention. Her mannerism all seemed to be designed to melt into the background as much as possible; Pen never got those sort of people. Her attitude was more of a 'say-what-you-think-regardless-of-the-people-around-you' type thing. The next girl, too, seemed quite non-attention seeking. Reaffirming that this group was certainly not her usual company.

The next kid sat down too, glancing up at the sky. Dave, Pen thought he was called. She did not like nor dislike the kid. To be honest, she didn't know him and so, she supposed she couldn't draw a conclusion either way.

Oh and, of course, Jesse - that rich kid who reckoned himself better than everyone else. Snobbery always made her blood boil and she felt her jaw clench as he sauntered up. He thinks he's God gift, she scoffed to herself, as she stretched out on the grass, her legs cramping from the long bus journey. When Mrs Fliss came to herd them inside, she leapt onto her feet and shoved her hands in her pocket, strolling towards the entrance. She ignored Fliss's instruction to pair up within groups and faked a yawn.

"Everyone ready to look at some super-interesting rocks?" she hollered to the rest of her group, in a sarcastic tone - more to annoy Mrs Fliss, than anyone else. Mrs Fliss's hands flew to her hips but she said nothing, glaring sharply at Pen before leading the groups inside, beginning to reel off which groups were going where.
Dr Goode pushed out from his desk and sauntered out into the hallway, having received note from the secretary that the kids had signed in and would be poking their noses in soon. Pilot's examination was on the top floor of the five-storey building and the kids were limited to the first floor, so he wasn't particularly concerned about them discovering anything. The top-secret second experimental strain was cultivating in a top sercret lab that was locked to most of the scientists - let alone the public - so that didn't really bother him either.

He strode into the room where Pilot lay - ah! Magnificent, he thought, every time he clapped eyes on his super soldier. A few scientists scurried around, clutching clipboards and a monitor beeped regularly, signalling that Pilot was functioning normally, even in his drug-induced slumber. The drugs - yet another invention of Dr Goode's - were nearly faultless and Dr Goode had considered marketing them alone, as a product . But that would cause questions, complications and so he had decided to wait until the big unveiling of his first priority experiment, the canine experiment.

"Wesley?" he snapped at one of the younger scientists, a small man with nervous, wide eyes and ginger hair. The poor man's eyes magnified by 10 times their normal size at being addressed by the head of the labs. He held a syringe, full of a colourless liquid.

"Wake up Pilot. Fully, this time. Just a quick check to see if Izzy has disappeared once and for all."

His cruel lips twisted upwards into a smile.

"Everyone ready to look at some super-interesting rocks?"

Alvira's mind quickly snapped back to reality upon hearing Pen call out to the group in a sarcastic tone of voice. Her eyes quickly went from distant to alert from 'comming back down to Earth' as some people say. Alvira got up to her feet and stretched a little, being tall can be a bit annoying sometimes. She was 5'11" so anytime she sat down her back always would hunch over, a habit she gained due to students whining in class when they couldn't see over her head. Alvira yawned a bit, still not quite awake enough although she had already drank a Monster Energy drink on the bus ride. She looked over at Pen,

"About as ready as you'd be to go to a Beauty Pageant."

She said laughing a bit. Alvira could tell that Pen was a complete tomboy, she looked like a normie but at least the way she acted was different from the endless amount of clones in the school. Alvira wasn't trying to get on Pen's nerves or anything, she was just trying to lighten up the mood a bit. Eventhough she didn't like this group much either, she sometimes couldn't stand EVERYONE being in a bad mood. She had to deal with that bullshit when she lived with her parents.

Alvira walked up to Pen, squinting her black-eyeshadow covered blue eyes, trying to keep as much sun out of them as possible.

"You don't seem like you're in a good mood today. Usually you have a neutral mood setting, not too mad, not too happy, but today you seem quite... uh, what's the word..? Frustrated."

Alvira tilted her head to the side curiously,

"What's on your mind, Pen?"

She said. She was tempted to call her Penny because it reminded her of The Big Bang Theory, but for once Alvira didn't feel like pissing other people off besides teachers. It felt kinda weird to be talking to someone that most likely would hate her on the spot, but oh well. She was bored and she was curious.

Whitney spent the time waiting to come up with sarcastic pet names for all of his group members should the need arise to use them. When he noticed the others getting up he too stood, shoving his hands further into his pockets.

"Everyone ready to look at some super interesting rocks?" Whitney was one to appreciate sarcasm, but made no comment or even change in expression, but it's not like anyone was paying too much attention. Except Terraline. She appears to be paying lots of attention, and Whitney had to admit she was probably a lot better at it then he was. Whitney then noticed Alvira's attempts at lightening the mood, which was fine as long as she didn't bother him. He looked at his other group members, and they all seem just as crabby and disinterested as him, except Saxon (who Whitney hopes won't try and pull anything on him, but someone is certainly going to suffer as he seems like he's thinking of a plan) and David (Whitney didn't even want to think about David). He also noticed Sam's absence, but figured he'd show up late eventually.

"Before we begin, I would like to say that I think we all don't really want to put up with each other, so I think we should all agree to not speak to each other unless it's important or a way of getting away from this boring Hell were about to enter, agreed?" Whitney said, which was less of a question and more of a command.

Terry smirked at Pen's comment. This was going to be a long day if they were just looking at this dumb crap. Didn't they have more important things to research other than rocks? Like cancer? She rolled her eyes at the stupidity and examined. Every stereotype seemed to be here: the snobby rich kid, the tomboy, the class clown... The tom boy didn't seem like a bad person and neither did the girl with the colorful hair. She was unsure about the rest of them. Then again, who was she to label a stereotype on them without knowing them ? Of course, they had probably already labeled her within the first five minutes but she truly didn't know them all that well yet.

She brushed dark hair out of her face and put her hands in her pocket. Terraline couldn't help but wonder if anyone would notice if she walked off. She could go for some pizza or something. She had begun to zone out when the boy named Whitney spoke up.

"Before we begin, I would like to say that I think we all don't really want to put up with each other, so I think we should all agree to not speak to each other unless it's important or a way of getting away from this boring Hell were about to enter, agreed?" He had said rather commandingly.

Terraline glanced at him and calmly stated, "No one seemed to have a problem with anyone up until you spoke. We're all irritated but we can make the decision whether or not we'd like to speak for ourselves. No one died and made you king. "

Saxons gaze drifted over the faces of his fellow groupies. Several pranks swirled around in his mind, but he was cut short by Mrs Fliss's appearance and at Pens comment he let out a short chuckle. *Rocks....* That gave him an idea. As everyone started to get up to move Saxon remained where he was for a few moments, scrabbling around in the soil and pocketing some pebbles. He wasn't exactly sure what he would do with them yet, but the more resources the better. As he picked up the last stone of many he spied a large worm slowly making its way through the grass. *Perfect!!!*

He lurched forwards and picked it up by the tail, quickly enclosing it in the palm of his hand - not to tight of course, he didn't want to harm the thing merely use it. He pushed himself back onto his feet and dusted his trousers down with his free hand before slinging his rucksack over his shoulder and following the group.

He hung back for a few steps, his new prank had occurred out of spontaneity and so it was simple in structure but bound to be highly effective. It was such a decision as to who would have the delight of going first. His gaze came to rest upon Whitney as he spoke, he scoffed at his words - no speaking was no fun. The simple action of speaking up had placed him on Saxons prank radar. It wasn't that he didn't like the guy, quite the opposite it was just that someone had to go first so why not be him.

He stepped closer to Whitney coming up on his left and loosely draping it over his arm, "I hear you mate, but I agree with Terraline if the spot of King has come up I think I have an equal right to claim it. How about I duel you for it" he told him cheerily before returning his arm to his side, in that process he dropped the worm just inside the collar of the guys shirt before moving away to now stand next to Terry, surprised he remembered her name, although the groups had just been read out moments ago. He flashed her a charming smile although his gaze remained on the guy as he waited for a reaction, he may not even realise it was there - it all depended upon how the worm landed down the back of his shirt.

Whitney sighed, "It seems no one here appreciates my way of saying don't talk to me. I couldn't care less if you talked to one another, just don't bother me." He then stiffened, feeling something crawl on him. With a somewhat panicked expression he wiggled around a little until a worm fell to the ground. He glared at Saxon, "I can't say I have a witty response to that. Congratulations, you all win, now can I be left alone?" Whitney asked, and then forced himself behind the rest of the group, blocking out everyone else and just thinking about the relief that going home will be.

Terraline watched Saxon put the worm in the collar of Whitney's collar and suppressed a giggle. She knew Saxon well for his little tricks but she had to admit his cheerful nature was quite cute. He was probably one of the not-so-bad people here although his pranks were not always funny for everyone. Nonetheless, she returned the smile with a slight blush. When Whitney started to wiggle to get the worm out, she couldn't help but laugh a little. Whitney did not seem to find it funny at all. She watched him glare at Saxon and ask to be alone. "It's okay Whitney it's just a joke. He didn't mean any harm by it.-"She tried to tell him but he already forced himself behind the group.
Once he had walked away, she looked at Saxon. "Maybe he wasn't the best choice for that."

Pilot didn't mind the sleep at all. The dark silence was almost comfortable. He was unable to count how long it had lasted. A few days, maybe? Outside of his mind, his body found itself laying on an exam table. He wore a pair of military cargo pants, black, and had been wearing a grey shirt before it had been removed and tossed onto a chair across the room. Little sticky monitor patches were placed all over his chest, keeping track of his breathing. Scientists rushed all around, preparing for his latest test. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that he would pass. Of course he would; he was perfect, after all.

As a needle was stuck into the crook of his arm, his mind suddenly felt like jelly being sucked out of a jar. It was dizzying almost. His heart rate gave a sudden, but not too concerning, spike. His eyelids flew wide open. They settled quickly, his dark eyes shifting to look up at the scientist looming over him. He didn't move. Pilot had played this game before. He'd learned the song and dance years ago. On test day, you waited for orders for literally everything.

Perhaps on an average day, he would have sat up, stretched, and, if he was feeling bold, even hopped off the table. But now he didn't dare move a muscle. He didn't want to fail a test; not again.

Saxon watched with joy as his prank took place, however the response was less than satisfying. He watched as Whitney went off in a huff but merely rolled his eyes at the glare he received, that look was nothing in comparison to some of the other things he had received for his jokes. But usually the bigger the response the funnier it was.

Turning his attention to Terraline as she spoke. He appreciated her words as she tried to stick up for him, clearly she saw the brighter side of his jokes. He chuckled slightly at her second response, "Its seems he was not, at least it means I didn't waste a better prank on him later though" he replied still chuckling, amusement glinting in his eyes. This day may not be so bad after all, although he hoped the others would present him with a better source of entertainment.

As they entered through the door to their destination he was hit with the familiar smell of laboratory's like the ones they had in school, a mixture of disinfectant and other chemicals. In some ways it smelled slightly like a hospital, but with an earthier undertone to it. He came to a halt with the others as Mrs Fliss finished reading out their assignments for the day. He wondered what else he would come across to aid his imagination here.

Jesse stood amongst the group, hands in his pockets, merely observing. It seemed as though Penelope and crazy Alvira were quickly becoming friends. And the white-haired boy, he hadn't known whom Whitney was before today, and it was strange to him that he hadn't noticed the boy at school or even on the bus. With such a foreign appearance, how could he miss him? Perhaps it was the way Whitney complained about others talking to him--as if Jesse wished to talk to him in the first place--that annoyed Jesse. It annoyed Jesse like a mosquito buzzing in his ear, one he was too lazy to swat away. Whitney was such a whiner; Jesse hoped he would keep his own word and not say anything for the rest of the trip.

When Terraline spoke her witty reply, Jesse's lips twitched up into what could've been a smile, or what may have been a laugh, for a split second. Jesse had always had problems smiling, as he always appeared to be in pain, and he was, most of the time. Her comment was a bit amusing, he could atleast admit that, but when it came down to it, who really was the 'king' here? That question needed not an answer. Bland Terraline, with a quick tongue, who would've thought? Still, it was nothing impressive and probably not necessary, in Jesse's opinion. The less people responding to Whitney, the better.

As he followed the group silently, a slight movement caught his eye. He glanced back to see Saxon digging through some rocks on the ground, clearly up to no good. Jesse audibly scoffed and shook his head. As long as whatever Saxon was planning to pull had nothing to do with him, there were no problems. Jesse figured that a person like Saxon and a person such as himself, could co-exist in this small world. It was a possibility, maybe. Although, coexisting in this small group, Jesse wasn't sure he could handle that. He watched closely as Saxon came back to the group, obviously hiding whatever he found in his hand, and putting whatever he found, on Whitney, whom then proceeded to wiggle around just as the creature that had been put down his shirt. He ignored Saxon's comment, as he was not about to argue whom had the rightful place on the throne. More amusement, but Jesse didn't know whether to applaud or facepalm. This was all somewhat painful to watch, awkward.

Awkwardly, painfully, Jesse found his way over to Penelope and Alvira. He walked beside Penelope for a moment, glancing down at her cautiously. Though he hated mostly everyone--hate really was a strong word, and such a cruel way to address others beneath him--he wished to make an acquaintance for this journey into the wonders of geology. He decided he would only speak to her when he felt like it, as it was too much of a burden to pretend to want to speak to her and listen to her throughout the trip. Still, she seemed the most normal out of all of them, even though she chose not to wear a dress like the girl Jesse would prefer to talk to, that of which was currently talking to that clown, Saxon.

"Penelope," he began in a low voice. He cleared his throat and stared off at the building. God, why did he want to do this in the first place? Why did talking to people have to be so hard? It would be easier if everyone simply adored him the moment they saw him. No, Jesse had to complete the difficult task of friendly communication. As they entered the building, Jesse whispered, "Penelope, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though you're as anxious to get through this as myself. Now, I know it must seem strange that I am speaking to you, as we are from different worlds, but riddle me this: Does your school always participate in lame field trips like this one? From the looks of the building," his hazel eyes glanced around, "this could easily be mistaken for a prison."
