Kingfisher Observing or participating?

Member Seen 4 yrs ago

This might just be me grasping at straws, but would it make sense to set the RP in the middle of a conflict, with the players being on opposing sides? It just seems like (from my experience) we always try to build up to this big events, and then loose interest/steam before they actually happen. Actually having a game-within-The Blackfyre Rebellion, or some-such war might be fairly interesting. That said I'm no GM, and am still fairly new to this, so maybe I'm missing something here.

Just one man's humble opinion, anyways.

-EDIT- just realized that I've literally just described option 2. So I vote option 2.

At the moment my unofficial count has us heading to Option 2.Questions, reservations about it? Toss 'em at me.

Same here :) . I think this might be a good time for those wanting to flesh out a new house or revamp their old house sheets to do so.

Yeah, count taken. Option 2 it is.

Aegon will be an NPC, but one I'll probably do most the writing for. Sini's likely to do the heavy lifting for Orys. Who Zach and Vanq focus on will follow.

Absolutely don't want to play ball with Option 2? Send me a PM. Otherwise, more info to follow soon.

Wait a minute--what should these new Character Sheets look like? Didn't I already DO a character sheet? I really have to do another one?

No, you don't. Let's use Flagg as an example: Say he loves his crazy Leos, and who doesn't, so Flagg wants to continue using Leos. He can do so without tweaking his CS at all. Just let the GMs know, get our okay, and there you go.

But what if I want to do a new House/character? Or if I just want to do a new CS?

That's absolutely cool. In that case, I'd suggest one to two paragraphs for personality and bio and...you're done.

As an example, the Aegon CS:

House: Targaryen of Dragonstone
Name: Aegon
Age: 30
Personality:

Aegon was seen as an enigma. He was a solitary person whose only friend was Orys Baratheon. He was a great warrior who wielded a sword called Blackfyre but only rode his dragon for battle or travel and never entered tourneys. He remained faithful to his sisters and left governance in their hands and only took command when necessary. While he was harsh with those who defied him, he was generous to those that bent the knee.

Biography:

Aegon was from the island of Dragonstone, the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian Freehold, which his family had settled over a century before the Doom of Valyria. According to Targaryen tradition, Aegon married within the family; however, instead of just one sister, he married both of them: his elder sister, Visenya, and his younger sister, Rhaenys. All three were dragon-riders before they were wed.

When Aegon was quite young, Volantis inquired whether Aegon and his dragons would join them in the east in a grand alliance against the other Free Cities, remnants of the Valyrian Freehold. He apparently rejected the offer. When Volantis invaded Tyrosh Aegon came upon his dragon Balerion the Black Dread joining the Storm King and Pentos on the side of Tyrosh instead. After the defeat of Volantis, Aegon returned to Dragonstone.

...and that's it. Labor intensive, right?

I don't know if I want to shelf all the work I put into this RP (family trees, Blackfyre specific characters, characters I like in the lines of Byron and Edwina) to go to another timeline even if the CS's are less extensive.

No problem. Just let us know when you come to a decision.

I know, but another important question was just asked:

Isn't Aegon just going to smack Westeros?

Oh, no. Nononono. Before anything even starts I'd say it's 50/50 odds.

We aren't looking to re-tell Martin's Conquest. We have given the players A LOT of power in deciding where things go. Politics will never mean more, and everyone starts with at least one army in the field.

Devil's advocate, You seemed pretty firm on "not stepping on Martin's toes" with this game. So why is it different with this next one?

Martin hasn't written a short story on the Conquest.

But he's written the outcome. So why does it matter if he hasn't written a short story?

I'm looking at it on a micro-level, not a macro-level.

Dunc and Egg get thrown into a conflict between Osgrey and Webber. I don't know if you read the Sworn Sword, but Osgrey and Webber are very big characters in it. I wouldn't be okay with someone playing Dany, or Jon Snow, or Dunc, or Egg. And had the request for either Osgrey or Webber come at ANY OTHER point in the timeline, I'd of been okay with it. But that'd be direct conflict with the Sworn Sword, and I didn't want to do that.

I think you are being too overcautious where it conflicts with the fun of what alternate universe role-plays are. It's fine to have a strict outline of the beginning but to put so many walls for everybody takes out the endless possibilities of an AU sequence of role-plays can have. You shouldn't be worrying about conflict once the role-play is going as at that point its branching out into it's own reality and that is the fun in playing these sort of things. Being ruled by canon detracts from it.

Either way, that's not the reason I'm not coming back to this RP, but here is some outline expressions:

1) I defined two characters I really like for this particular timeline and I'm not going to create new characters right now.
2) We have only started this thing about a month ago, I do not like it when a perfectly semi-active RP is "cancelled" out of nowhere.
3) I can't muster interest for Aegon's Conquest.

Hope you all have fun though.

Wow. I should've done such a post for your DC game.

But I had more class. So.

The problem with UDC is that it had things defined from previous incarnations of the game. If it was year one it would've been a lot different. I don't deny I'm micromanaging Gotham or Batman's family of characters. Believe me I've heard the criticisms and would have taken no offense to your own. I have been nothing but courteous and neutral here, shame that you see it as a hostile attack.

Again, cheers.

The meat of my character sheet is completed. I can tweak it relatively quickly based on whichever timeline we end up choosing (though it looks like we're going with Aegon's conquest). I'll hopefully put together Maester Gerrold's history in the next couple days, but you should be able to get a decent sense of his bio from Lady Eleysa's. I don't think I'll put anything together for Gawin Lefford since he's three...

In the meantime I'll leave the current character sheets with the GMs to review.

I do have a couple of potential connections for my characters, though admittedly the fit will be better with minor houses. If anyone is interested, let me know. You'll see blanks in my character's histories.

  1. Where/by who Kevan Lefford was fostered and squired as a child (~20-25 years ago).

  2. The House from which Eleyna Flowers was born (30 years ago).

  3. The House of Ser Lymond.

  4. Where/by who the Lefford twins were fostered as a child (~10-15 years ago).

  5. The House from which Denys Lefford's wife is from and where Denys later stayed (the last 10 years).

I'd just like to point out that I'm a bit.. iffy, about setting the RP during the era of Aegon's Conquest. Wouldn't Westeros be.. completely different?

I'm no expert on Martin's lore, so please correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't Westeros, at this stage, a collection of small kingdoms who don't have much interaction with one another? And wouldn't a fair few of the Houses that existed after Aegon's conquest/in ASOIAF not exist, at this stage? I'm probably wrong, and I'll go along with the RP being set during the conquest anywho; I guess it gives us more free reign.

I might make a bid for House Martell, before anyone else nabs it (that is, if Ruby is stepping down from playing them, as I heard rumours of in the chat). If someone else already has plans for Dorne, I'll probably re-take House Redwyne, but do a slightly different spin on them.

A lot of houses can trace their lineage back before the conquest, the only real houses that can be pinned down as not being around in the new setting are those with Valyrian blood or the few that are mentioned as cropping up since then.

The Kingdoms certainly did interact, they just didn't all collectively bow to a single distant throne, you'll probably find, beyond some amount of development, the lives of most minor lords and the peasants was pretty similar.
