The year is 10k A.D., and in a system at the edge of the galaxy there is a space station. Station, as he calls himself, though referring to him as a male is merely a convenience, has been there for as long as he can remember, though he doesn't believe he can access any memory older than 5500 years. Occasionally he has seen vessels float within his sensor range, and has retrieved them in order to gain access to their records, databases, and technology. These ships come by rarely, the two nearest to each other coming eight years apart, the two furthest over a century apart. They are the unfortunate vessels that were unable to leave hyperspace, having missed every exit, natural and artificial, and having impacted the barrier at the edge of the galaxy, they floated for years, centuries, or millennia before being caught, most life on board having long ago died off.

Occasionally, during his down times, he has visions. Memories, historical records, entertainment files, he knows not what they are. They show a young man giving himself over to a medical procedure which will transfer his mind and memories into a ship's computer banks so that he could survive the journey through a hyperspace gate. The gates were a piece of alien technology which sent you into a dimension that humans had no natural defense against the effects of. Once on the other side, his body would be repaired or cloned, whichever would work best, and his mind would be reincorporated. That's where the visions end.

One day Station perfected a way to draw in ships from hyperspace, to drastically increase the odds of encountering vessels. A few months later, it drew in something that he couldn't remember every seeing before, a starship with people on it. Living humans. Though he saved their lives, they were trapped. No form of Hyperdrive he knew of could allow one to enter Hyperspace this close to the barrier.
The only point of this will be to live in this system, aboard station, and, through the joint narrative, to answer the question posed in the title. What does it mean to be human?
You can be any kind of human you want to be, cyborg, genetically engineered, human-contiousness-downloaded-into-an-android, completely organic, more evolved, alien hybrid, whatever, as long as you can call yourself "human".
I am a bit worried that this is to serious for most people. Most of the RPs I've been in were far less serious and lasted for only short periods.

Bump.
Any ideas anyone?

I'm certainly interested.
Question: Does Station, as an artificial inlligence, follow logic laws embedded into the code of the ship's computer or does he have certain free will?

Welcome.

Who said Station is an AI? Station himself doesn't know whether he is a highly complex AI, the combination of an organic mind and an AI, or an organic mind that has simply controlled machines for so long that it doesn't fit in with normal organics.

I'm not sure how far I'll go towards one side or another, or which one I'll be. I'll be controlling Station and his Avatar(s) (have you every seen "Andromeda"?)

If it is an AI, it is more complex than the organic brain, and as such, it has moods, personality, even desires.

Count me in.

I'd like to roleplay a chaplain of some sort but I'm not knowledgeable in Biblical matters; however, that kind of character would bring some interesting interactions into play.

Otherwise, perhaps a genetically engineered human who, due to serious modifications, has been turned into some abominable being. Whether he retains his sanity in a full manner is to be seen.

Kind of reminds me of Book from FireFly. In the special features, they say the guy who played him is Buddhist, so whenever he first got the role, Book sounded like a Buddhist monk instead of a Christian Priest. Without knowing much about the bible, though, you'd have a hard time with the Biblical view of humanity, or really making the role believable.

The second character sounds like it'd fit in well too. It really pushes the boundary of humanity.

I want to have at least four people signed up before I start. RPs tend to lose several players when they start, in my experience. I may make the OOC, though, to see if people sign up. That said, I can't really make a CS, as it would be difficult to fit a good character to one. So everyone can make up their own in order to tell us about themselves.

Really curious idea. I enjoy the possibility quite a bit. I would also love to join in if you would have me.

While not overly religious I do have some schooling in Christianity as well as Catholic Theology and Philosophy ( albeit a bit more modern and jesuit take on each ). If you would allow me to make a small edit to your original post, mainly that of having the character I have in mind not come with the first ship to cross Station's path.

A completely human priest, John D. Coyle from the year 2034 winds up floating past. His ship originally meant to take him on a missionary journey to the then growing colony on mars, however a faulty computer, or stray asteroid caused the ship to become damage, and enter warp. Not the hyperdrive of 10.k A.D. but the 99.9 repeating % light speed of 2034 spacecraft. He would have been in stasis for... well a rather extended period of time, until he was brought out of warp.

When he finally realized what had happened he decided to enter warp for an extended period of time in jumps, going into stasis each time, coming out to look around, hoping to see some sort of planet that he might be able to land on. Or possibly run into humanity from elsewhere. That never happened. So, through his many jumps, each time only spending a few days out of stasis. Has been traveling for 8,000 years. For him it has only been 2 or so years. He thinks all human civilization is dead, and that nothing remains.

Staring out into the endless void that greets him as he nears the barrier of the galaxy, knowing now that there is no longer any hope or possibility of finding civilization again. That for him to run into another galaxy from this one is statistically impossible. He wasn't sure how much longer the ships power supply would last anyways. Just as he decided to enter stasis for the last time a loud clunk might be heard, as the ship entered the pull of station. Being dragged towards the being that is known as Station. Unable to believe what was actually happening to him.

It could also give interesting perspective on the time period. IF you have a whole bunch of people who are augmented and changed to being completely different. Frankensteins of modernity. Well then the perspective on the question is rather one-sided. A priest from the early 21st century could provide some input not provided by others!

I like the idea. A man, lost in time, on a Station of advanced people. Could he even cope with the change? Talk about culture shock.

I am interested in this one. This seems like a interesting forum to ask the question on what is human. I am interested to think of what conclusion if any would emerge from this. this sounds like a place where transhumanism and genetic manipulation could be examined as well. so many good ideas.

Since I have three people interested now, I'll try to start the OOC tonight.

Hmmmmm, sounds quite cool. Philosophical RPs are fun.

I'm thinking of a character about as far from human as possible, though: augmented alien hybrid with an affinity for machines. Workable? :D

Sure. I guess it would work as a comparison. What make you different from the "humans" on board? Does that really matter? All that.
I guess it really depends on the specifics of your character what we ask. If you're a Vulcan, you're pretty much human already, if you're a Geonosian from Star Wars, or a grunt from Halo, that's quite different.

By as far from human as possible, I mean within the bounds outlined within the first post. So it's an alien-human hybrid, so nothing Geonosian or gruntish. :)
