But isn't the point of the RP to make up a story?

Well I can't imagine it being too far off from the x-amount of us trying to kill eachother by using future-seeing diaries. The story isn't the problem, the problem is trying to come up with a way to project the future entries without breaking the game and/or making it trivial/boring.

So either way it's pointless because with one way we already know things are going to happen before they're predicted because they're reactionary, or everyone knows what the prediction is because its posted publicly and the game becomes trivial.

It doesn't become trivial. It would only be trivial if this was a PvP RP.

Fair enough, although I was hoping for a good amount of pvp.

I think I'd be siding with Light, actually. Mirai Nikki's about trying to survive while offing others. If all the players are working as a team to defeat NPC/PC villains, how exactly does the rp differ from any general "let's form a group and go after the baddies on an epic quest rp!"? Not to mention that it would make no sense, plot-wise. The diary holders are supposed to kill each other, and only one can win. Why would a group of them team up to kill off the other half? Why would this other half be "bad guys" any more than they are? We would be the ones doing the killing, after all. And if out characters have no problem offing those other people, why wouldn't they backstab each other?

Not to mention, it would take away the constantly lingering threat of your character dying if you/they make a mistake. Mirai Nikki without the fear of death is... kinda bland?

I would like to join this RP too. I do like the sound of Light's idea more, but I do see the problem with the other characters involved being synced up properly. My suggestion is that perhaps the character involved in the killing of whoever has the dead end could get a pm with a small hint of what the victim's diary said, but not exactly what it said.

For example, let's go back to "You die on the 5th floor of a nearby apartment building". Now the GM would also PM the player he believes is most capable of actually fulfilling this entry and giving them a hint along the lines of "You'll find (victim) somewhere near this apartment building" and then leave it up to that player to try fulfilling that entry as best they can without knowing exactly how to do it, that way they must figure it out and that gives the victim the chance to try changing their future and avoiding the dead end altogether.

Also, just as a story element it may be possible that some players will purposely reveal their dead-ends for whatever reason of their own accord.

That's not exactly correct. Many of the characters in Mirai Nikki don't want to kill and are motivated by entirely different reasons. I think you may have missed the point of the show and got too caught up in the action. :P

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Do you think that Light's way will be breaking the mold? A revolutionary RP experience?

Jester Acharis said Not to mention that it would make no sense, plot-wise. The diary holders are supposed to kill each other, and only one can win. Why would a group of them team up to kill off the other half?

Plot wise: How many people do you think would really be 100% A-OK with killing someone? Only the epitome of a Mary-Sue would dive into a Battle Royale no questions asked. The characters wouldn't TEAM UP TO KILL BAD GUYS. They would be allies, perhaps having already known one another before the start of the game.

Jester Acharis said Why would this other half be "bad guys" any more than they are? We would be the ones doing the killing, after all.

The Antagonists would be motivated by different things. They wouldn't necessary be "bad" guys.

Jester Acharis said And if out characters have no problem offing those other people, why wouldn't they backstab each other?

I wouldn't imagine our characters would have no issues killing someone. The game would be psychologically challenging for them. Additionally, they would of course be afraid of each other. It's a possibility someone could back stab them.

Don't be ridiculous. Even if we were to do it Light's way there would be no real "lingering threat of your character dying". We all know no one is going to allow their character to die willy nilly which is exactly why it's much better to have our group be allies.

This would mean the story could only ever be progressed when BioHazard is online. This would also mean BioHazard would have to take quite a lot of responsibility, even for a GM. I think it's a pretty unrealistic thing to ask of him/her.

The story could easily progress without constant diary update, though it is true that that would be taxing on the GM.

I don't even really know what we're arguing about anymore, hehe. The thread seems to have picked up quite a few people so if everyone is dedicated we could really play it any way we want. I'll always be pro-public-predictions though.

Playing with public predictions will feel more like we're collectively writing a fan-fiction than playing an rp where we are challenged to perform well and stay alive. I must agree that our discussion has gotten us some attention (which is always good) but just like you, I'm sticking to my guns.

Hello, I've come to get my two cents.

The gist of Mirai Nikki was less about knowing the future and more of changing it. To make this a successful non-broken pvp RP(and Mirai Nikki should definitely be pvp), you should simply impose some rules and conditions. Some rules and stuff should be this;

#1. Players should be allowed to change any the future as long as it is related to their diary. If person 1 says person 3 will be on X location on X day, then person 3 should NOT change that future unless his diary type gives him information that would make him do otherwise.

#2. Players need to align entries. If player 1 made an entry saying playing 3 will be at X location on X day, player 2 shouldn't make the exact same entry saying player 3 is elsewhere on X location on X day.

#3. Realism and fun. Your character should only know what he/she knows. *hinting at abusing other player's entries*. There is no 1 million dollar prize if you win this RP. There is no need to ruin other people's fun so you can win and theres sure as hell no way being a dick/powerplayer will make your win satisfying.

#4. Players are randomly given X number of chances by GM to inflict DEAD ENDS on others, this will make the game creative. If you're cornered by a legitimate DEAD END and scenario where changing the future is no longer possible, players should then die gracefully <3

That's not exactly correct. Many of the characters in Mirai Nikki don't want to kill and are motivated by entirely different reasons. I think you may have missed the point of the show and got too caught up in the action. :P

The entire premise is that only one person can become God, and the players are told to kill each other for that purpose. Not everyone is willing to go that route, of course, but that doesn't change that it's the idea of the game. I never talked about any of their motivations. I think you're just trying too hard to find something to complain about, to be honest. I've seen you do this before.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Do you think that Light's way will be breaking the mold? A revolutionary RP experience?

Light's way would make it feel like Mirai Nikki and not a general "look baddies let's kill them" jrpg, yes. Not really sure why you decided to be all dramatic about it.

Plot wise: How many people do you think would really be 100% A-OK with killing someone? Only the epitome of a Mary-Sue would dive into a Battle Royale no questions asked. The characters wouldn't TEAM UP TO KILL BAD GUYS. They would be allies, perhaps having already known one another before the start of the game.

... Did... you actually read what I wrote, or are you just really desperate to miss the point on purpose?

Because what I said was: it makes no sense for people to team with a bunch of others right off the bat in a game where only one can survive - because that would inevitably lead to backstabbing and needing to kill your teammates in the end. I can see it happening between people who know each other and in a smaller scale, but all the PC characters just deciding that this is a good idea? Unlikely. They would need to be like a really close family or something.

What you said was: omg do you think people would be okay with killing that easily Mary Sue Battle Royale CAPS LOCK.

Do you see the... disconnection here?

The Antagonists would be motivated by different things. They wouldn't necessary be "bad" guys. I wouldn't imagine our characters would have no issues killing someone. The game would be psychologically challenging for them. Additionally, they would of course be afraid of each other. It's a possibility someone could back stab them.
... That... was my point. I think you should just breathe and reread what I wrote a few times.

Don't be ridiculous. Even if we were to do it Light's way there would be no real "lingering threat of your character dying". We all know no one is going to allow their character to die willy nilly which is exactly why it's much better to have our group be allies.

Because not doing things the way you would is ridiculous. I love that sentiment.

I've been in a lot of rps where PC character death was a thing. I've had it happen to me. It's fun. And you know, if the entire premise says that your character might die, I'd like to think the people joining would be prepared for that. If you don't feel like you could ever kill off your character for whatever reason then pity for you. You're missing out and should probably get more detached from your characters.

Now how about you stop trying to start crap (again) and let people have their view on stuff, yeah? I'm at least going to stop debating about this. Don't want to clog up the thread anymore with this.

I like Animus' suggestions, btw!
