“Oh my... Tristan!” Tris lifted her head up her dark brown orbs connecting with her Nixies' figure as she lent out the window looking down at her with both surprise and shock plastered all over her face though the look in her eyes told her that she wasn't too put off by her current appearance, it was like she had somehow suspected that this was going to happen to her... Like she already knew... Shifting her arms she scrunched up her face pulling herself further up onto the rocks her tail still dragging in the water around her as her new found friend quickly disappeared back into the house shouting back at her as she left, “I will be down in a minute.” Glancing around where she was she shifted slightly her stomach muscles tensing slightly as she tried to keep herself up and keep control of her powerful tail at the same time, "Please hurry, Nixie..."
Biting her lip she fixed her arm around the rock her free hand now coming up to brush back some of her long drenched dark brown locks causing droplets of salty sea water to roll over her skin and down her face, the sound of shifting against the rocks beside her catching her attention causing her to turn her head to look over at Nixie who was now joining her where she clung on for life, “Tristan. You, too?” Turning her body so that she was now facing her she looked up at her confusion and slight fear in her eyes, "Nixie... What the hell is going on? Why do I have a tail? And what do you mean 'You too'?" She moved her hands over the rocky surface pulling herself closer to where Nixie stood her tail clumsily flipping up and down so that she could help herself a long, "Nixie, I'm scared... I-I didn't know who else to go to about this..."
“Shh, calm down,” Nixie whispered. She reached a hand out to help the girl get closer to her, than thought better of it. If she touched Tristan, she would transform on the rocks and the end results could be very painful. She winced at the idea.
“I would give you a hug to comfort you, but if I do...” She trailed off. “Look, Tristan, I have no idea what happened to us, but I think it might be because of the weird pool in the cave. Andrea must also be this way. There is no other word for this: We're mermaids and touching water gives us tails.”
In reality, it was kind of cool. Imagine all they would be able to see under the sea, though it would change all their lives in dramatic ways. No longer could they go swimming around other people, no longer could they surf and no longer could Andrea help her parents at the Aquatic Research Center.
“Shh, calm down,” Tris turned her gaze up staring up at Nixie as she reached out towards her before she pulled her hand away again as though something was holding her back from reaching out to her causing her stomach to churn and her heart to sink slightly in her chest, was she that different that even her new friend couldn't stand to touch her. She scrunched up her face her stomach muscles tensing even more than they had as she tried to pull herself up onto a flat part of the rock she had a hold of, her upper body strength nothing like that of her older brothers, “I would give you a hug to comfort you, but if I do...” Giving up her body slipped back down into the water her head rising once more to glance up at her friend.
“Look, Tristan, I have no idea what happened to us, but I think it might be because of the weird pool in the cave. Andrea must also be this way. There is no other word for this: We're mermaids and touching water gives us tails.” She pulled one hand off the rock rubbing her face as she tried to get her head round the fact that she was now a mermaid, "Not that this isn't cool or anything... But I don't want to be a mermaid..! I have championships coming up soon, I have to train. I can't surf like this! I can't do anything like this! I'm stuck as a fish; oh god, my brothers are never going to let me forget this if they find out... How am I supposed to drive the jeep now..."
“I don't have the answers; I think this will be something the three of us have to figure out together.” Nixie pulled her knees up to her chest, careful not to lose her balance and fall toward the water below. She kept her eyes on Tristan; the poor girl was really stressed. Of course she was, she was a surfer. To be a mermaid meant she would be giving up a lot, but what choice did she have? What choice did any of them have?
“I'm sorry. I know this has to be worse for you, and for Andrea since she works with dolphins and stuff.” She sighed, looking down, feeling really helpless. She had no idea how to fix things and what if they were stuck like this forever?
“Leave your arms out of the water until they dry in the sun and then I'll help pull you up,” Nixie suggested. “If I get wet and turn right now, I'll fall on these rocks.”
“I'm sorry. I know this has to be worse for you, and for Andrea since she works with dolphins and stuff.” She shook her head as she heard her begin to apologize to her about how much she had now lost because of whatever it was that had happened to them, all this had just ruined their lives though why none of them knew. This wasn't something that could have been predicted, "No, please... Don't apologize Nixie... You have nothing to be sorry for, it's not your fault I can't surf anymore... I'll just have to give it up until I can get rid of this thing we have..."
“Leave your arms out of the water until they dry in the sun and then I'll help pull you up. If I get wet and turn right now, I'll fall on these rocks.” Turning her gaze up she looked back towards the way she had come from the beach still looked empty with only her things standing alone on the sand bank, "I don't want you getting wet or getting impaled because of me... Meet me on the beach? I can drag myself back onto the sand better than lift myself up onto the rocks... I need to work out more..."
With a nod, Nixie stood up and made her way over the sharp rocks, until her feet was standing on sand. She kicked off her flip flops and walked over to where Tristan’s stuff was. She found it interesting that the girl surfed so close to where she lived. If she had known this before, she would have watched her from her bedroom window. Now it was too late for that.
Nixie set in the sand, waiting for Tristan to show up. She grabbed the girl's towel and waited.
When the other got herself pulled into the sand and away from the lapping water, Nixie planned on tossing her the towel.
She waited watching until Nixie was completely on the sand before she pushed herself away from the rocks slowly getting the hang of her tail as she moved herself through the water and over to the beach she had begun on, when she couldn't swim any further she gritted her teeth using her arms to pull herself out of the water and up as far onto the beach as she could leaving a smooth trail of sand behind her, "This... Is not as easy as it looks... In the movies..." Reaching out she caught hold of her towel putting it down on the sand before she slowly pushed herself onto her back with a grunt, "Okay, so I'm stuck as a fish... I can't drive like this Nixie... Wait, you said before you're like this, how did you get your legs back?"
“When you dry, you turn back to normal,” Nixie explained. “I figured that would work since getting wet turned me into a mermaid. I tried to take a bath...” She trailed off, blushing slightly when she remembered the scene from before. “I was shocked to say the least.”
She looked around, trying to find another towel or something to help Tristan dry off. The sun was shining bright, so that would also be a big help. When she couldn't find anything, she shrugged off her sundress, leaving her only wearing her light blue bikini top and bottoms.
Nixie set down next to the girl and offered her shirt. “Let's hurry. I think I see someone coming.” She was about to start panicking, when the shape of a person formed into that of Andrea.
“Oh, it's Andrea! I guess it is “come to Nixie for help” day,” she said with a chuckle.
“When you dry, you turn back to normal. I figured that would work since getting wet turned me into a mermaid. I tried to take a bath...” Tris flicked her gaze over to the girl as she remembered her morning in the bath her hands working to dry herself off as quickly as she could while trying to not chuckle at the thought of being stuck in a bath tub with a giant fish tail; at least she had been in the ocean, she had places she could go as a fish... Nixie had a door separating her from her family. That would have been scary for anyone, “I was shocked to say the least.” Tris bit her soft pink lower lip softly as she nodded in understanding, "I'll bet... Needless to say I was more than a little freaked out when I was paddling out and found that I was lugging a huge tail behind me... Then my brother followed and almost saw me with it..."
She turned her attention back to her tail in question as she continued to rub at it trying to get every tiny little bit of water off of herself as she could a small smile appearing on her lips as she watched Nixie kneel beside her to start helping her, "Thanks Nixie... For everything." She turned her head smiling a little brighter as she sat up a little straighter wiping down her arms and upper body with her towel, “Let's hurry. I think I see someone coming... Oh, it's Andrea! I guess it is “come to Nixie for help” day.” Turning to look over she noticed the figure that Nixie had been speaking about, Andrea quickly heading over to them with as much confusion and fear on her face as the rest of them had, "Well... I came to you because I know that you live in the lighthouse, not to mention you're the person I've spoken to most since I arrived here. You make me feel comfortable, easy to talk to." She gave a short nod in Andrea's direction and more or less to the look held on her face, "From her expression it looks like three for three... We all have tails..."
