Has there been any wars or anything in the recent past? Like big military engagements that ended within the past like ten-fifteen years?

What is it with you insisting humans are bastards? Anyway, big wars recently? Yes? No?

Because they are... And yes. (Also, if anyone would like to maybe submit some races for the universe of this game, just say so... Because it feels all bundled with the backstory I have planned.)

Humans can be amazing and they can be horrible. It's the generalization of "humans are bastards" that I dislike- "humans can be bastards" is correct, no question, but saying humans ARE bastards implies that all of us are, and I disagree with that.

I can sense it easily... Mainly because you're meant to over push and repeat things to the max.

Sorry, I guess I've dealt with too many people who talk like that and AREN'T being sarcastic that I have a hard time telling anymore. Anytime I do use sarcasm online anymore, I generally overload it with emoticons to really get across the "I'm not serious" part.

Anyway!

I'm thinking my character is gonna be ex-military then, which would explain how she came to have the MEC suit in the first place. A really bad war injury, like a photon mine or something, basically horribly crippled her, so they wound up just amputating her ruined limbs, giving her the cybernetic hookups, and slapping her into a MEC suit for the remainder of the war.

After the war, she had to get by with the cut-rate military surplus prosthetics (aka defective rejects) to try to live a normal life. By that point though, she was military through and through, had spent long enough in a MEC suit that it felt natural to her, and was getting real sick of her crappy replacement limbs not working right.

So, one black-market refurbished MEC suit later, she wound up trying to get into mercenary work. I figure she met the crew while she was on a job (bonus points if it was at a production for one of the military manufacturing plants that made her reject prosthetics) and realized that she was really sick of playing rent-a -cop, so she wound up joining up with them. Sure, her current MEC suit is about two decades out of date and has gradually been repaired using everything from car parts to assembly line crane components, but it still works. Admittedly, she's the only one who understands HOW it works at this point and is the only one who has any hope of modifying / repairing it, but it works!

The scrapped together construction is also what prevents her from using ranged weapons like the military MECs do- the suit has absolutely no target assist systems and isn't a very stable firing platform. She could pull the trigger on a gun, sure, but she has no hope of really aiming it beyond 'face it in that general direction and hope for the best'.

If she ever were to get her hands on a proper, new, military MEC, she'd become a pretty devastating powerhouse for the pirates to use.

Good idea, anyway, Sheik, if your character is going to be a weird reptile snake thing, could you describe the race with a form like this?
Name:
Appearance:
Government Situation(Couldn't think of a better term, but this is basically how their government acts.):
History:

The way that I built my character, it allows us to, down the road if you feel it would help the storyline, raid a military storehouse or some such (a dangerous mission in and of itself!) to get a proper MEC suit and some MEC weapons. This would only really be justified if there was some really massive battle coming up that they needed to fight and for whatever reason couldn't avoid.

Alrighty then. Alien species coming up!

Name: Yuan-ti (Because I love the D&D name too much, tee hee)

Appearance: Almost completely serpent with two arms and standing around 7 or 8 feet tall. Scale colors range from green to black, sometimes red, and their faces are slightly humanoid but still very snake-like (unblinking eyes, forked tongue, fangs). Most Yuan-ti are not venomous but one subspecies, the Yeshnaks, are highly venomous and are more physically enhanced than other Yuan-ti.

Government: The Yuan-ti are ruled by a monarchy from a royal family line that has been unbroken for almost two thousand years. This line is the line of Yantar, the same name as their home planet, and are entirely Yeshnaks, having used their venom and increased strength to stay in control. Most laws boil down to "Don't cross the Royal Family or die." There are no prisons, all crimes are punished by immediate execution no matter the severity and as such, the crime rate is considerably low. When a child of the Royal family reaches 3 years old, they are immediately taught the arts of assassination, stealth, and all forms of combat, making them formidable rulers and often executioners. When dealing with other races, the Yuan-ti rulers have the appearance of kindness and courtesy but everything they do is for their own gain. Rulers of the Yuan-ti have been renowned as having silver tongues and honeyed words that let them manipulate almost all other species and governments, if they wish. Empires have been puppets of the Yuan-ti or destroyed by enemies driven by Yuan-ti words. When confronted the Yuan-ti will make the appearance of giving in before they strike with deadly and almost unstoppable force. But unlike other governments, the Yuan-ti do not wish to conquer or enslave due to their total disdain for other races, even if they were slaves, and have remained a powerful force in the galaxy/universe but have not assumed total control.

History: For centuries, the Yuan-ti were constantly at war with each other, leading to stunted technological growth until the Yeshnaks, lead by the first Yantar, gathered an army so powerful they nearly wiped all the other Yuan-ti out of existence. But instead of destroying them, Hesstash Yantar decided to bring them under his rule and unite the Yuan-ti. After a century of rebuilding and mistrust, the Yuan-ti finally accepted each other and their new rulers, bringing and unheard of era of peace to the newly named planet of Yantar. After that the planet exploded with technological advancements and new ideas, reaching out into the stars a matter of centuries after they were united. Their first contact with alien species did not go well, it started the first interplanetary war the Yuan-ti had ever conceived of. After decades of bloodshed and ruthless violence, the Yuan-ti were victorious and Maktas Yantar decided that the price was too high and other races too foul to continue conquering the galaxy. Thus, the Yuan-ti helped rebuild the civilization they nearly destroyed and took the stance of diplomacy with all other aliens they encountered, using their intelligence and deceptive charm to make a place for themselves among the most powerful governments. For the first few centuries of interplanetary contact, the Yuan-ti went unchallenged but when a royal convoy carrying the Crown Prince was attacked by another species, they retaliated swiftly, fiercely, and decisively, bringing other governments into the war on their side and eliminating the propaganda of their attackers, effectively cutting the enemy army in half and decreasing the quality of soldiers. The Yuan-ti soldiers fought with cunning and struck every weak point, crippling their enemies food supplies and the moral of the population to force them to surrender within a few years Ever since then they have been feared and respected by all, and Yuan-ti mercenaries are the most valuable to any government or organization.

I'm inclined to think that they sound a bit on the overpowered side- also, it sounds like they had only been involved in a single space war, so how they could go from that to being able to exterminate a civilization while the other galactic civilizations just watched is totally beyond me. Some other factions would have told them to back down- you don't wipe out a civilization because one cargo ship got attacked. After all, if they were willing to do that, then every galactic civilization would be at risk, since all it would take is one pirate crew attacking one ship and suddenly their entire species is trying to exterminate yours.

If they were that quick to rise to that level of violence, there is no way they wouldn't be involved in an ongoing war with every other spacefaring race.

Eh, my main idea is that they will be one of the races that stay strong in the backstory which is really only about two years before.

Hmmm...How about this: The cargo ship was carrying the Crown Prince and it was an assassination not some random attack so they got about ten other governments on their side somehow. They are a little overpowered but like I said, they don't want to conquer and they only fight those who have provoked them. Better?
