I take that as they're all willing volunteers in the name of the Laughing Mare.

Or they were tortured to insanity. Idk.

It more has to do with the insidious influence of the Laughing Mare on their minds. They're willing volunteers, but they're basically mind-slaves, especially at lower levels (the converted townsponies, Revelers and Euphories). The slightly more lucid, truly willing cultists would be the necromancers (priestesses/priests) and performers, like the Jesters and the Harlequines.

The rest of the ranks are either reanimated undead or eldritch creatures like the Puppeteers and Grinning Worms, so there is zero chance of them being anything but loyal to the Mare.

If you mean Luna's bat ponies, then yes, though they will more than likely be very rare and solely aligned with Moon&Star.

Remember that there has to be a reason for the character to doubt the House.

And, if Derp makes a Nightmare, we'll have three Luna-worshipping characters (including my own)... Heh, no love for Celestia, it seems.

I'm creating a Cult of Laughter character.

And, we might get a failed forest wraith dude!

Not full at all. Just the co GM, the GM, me and two others. Three others if you're joining. And no, you don't need permission.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "forced". Most cultists join willingly, called by the Laughing Mare, but there be some forceful (submit to the Mare or die) conversions... What did you have in mind?

I'm thinking kidnapped, strapped to an alter, having a macabre music machine playing soul wrenching music and an insane cultist standing over you and trying to get you to smile because you recently had a depressing experience but instead disfigured you horribly out of anger because you can't smile.

It is not full at all. We can use all the players we can get. Tell your friends, make 3 character, go nuts.

If you wouldn't smile, even with the Mare whispering in your ear and all that (unlikely, considering her power)... :( They'd just kill you. The Cult can always use more laughing dead. Characters that are relatively willing at first, then become doubtful make far and away the most sense when it comes to the Cult, as the other way around just leads to Smiling Dolls, food for the Grinning Worms, etc.

I'm sorry, I know that's limiting. I think what you need to tell me are the results. What is this character like right now? From there, I can see if there's any way to fit her/him in with the Cult.

Name: Nightingale
Species: Thestral

Gender: Female

Appearance: Nightingale, like most of her race, is petite in form and lithe in body. Her fur is indigo whereas her mane and tail are a mix of silver and white. Her eyes are pale yellow. Nightingale’s cutie mark is the white silhouette of a nightingale with its wings outstretched. Nightingale carries herself with an air of confidence and is naturally graceful. She has a jagged scar running along her side where she had been mortally wounded which she keeps covered with thick robes. Under her robes she has a pair of black steel hoofbaldes. They had been her fathers and they were a reminder of her vow to see Moon and Stars fall.

Talents: Nightingale’s special talent is her ability to mimic sounds and voices. During her time in Moon and Stars Nightingale was trained to be Night Terror, Thestrals trained in the art of assassination, espionage and torture. They are also trained to hone the art of dreamwalking, a skill unique to the dying race. For Nightingale her tactics are centered around divide and conquer. She will use her talent to mimic voices draw her enemy's away and then open their throat with one of her hoofblades. She almost always takes the stealthy approach but when faced with open combat she will provoke her opponent into attacking first. After years of being hunted she honed her skill for aerial combat and became deadly with her hoofblades.

Faction: Moon and Stars

Backstory: Since the age of five Nightingale has been trained in how to enter the dreams of others and alter how they think to some degree. She was trained by her father in the beginning when she began learning to dream in a lucid state. Aside from her father she also has a younger brother, Pyroeye, a young prodigy and highly regarded despite his young age. Nightingale never shared her family's devotion to the Moon Guild or Moon and Stars for that matter but she still believed that they had a better right than the other Houses. She felt that they are looked down upon by the unicorn race. Throughout her life she was told of how her race had once thrived but now they were a shadow of what they had once been. Nightingale never voiced this opinion and buried it deep for fear of ridicule.

When the day of her induction into the Night Terrors came Nightingale was told to torture a pony to the point of insanity with her dreamwalkiing alone. Sickened and repulsed by this she refused to do so. Nightingale was disgraced and marked as a traitor. She begged her father and brother, Her only family to come with her as she planned to escape but they shunned her. Heartbroken she fled. For years she was hunted until one night she was cornered by a group of Night Terrors. She had managed to fight most of them off but one was more persistent then his comrades and engaged her in open combat. To Nightingale's horror she was facing her father, the stallion that had raised her. The two locked blades and in the end Nightingale won, her father cursing the day she was born with his dying breath.

Fueled by rage and sorrow Nightingale vowed then and there to see Moon and Stars burn. She had been having dreams telling her to go to Redheart's Refuge. Deeming this fate she struck out toward the refuge.

Other: Nightingale has a playful nature despite her background. She is quick witted and rarely without a smirk on her muzzle and a teasing remark on the tip of her tongue. Though she hides it well she has a deep seeded hate for unicorns. She will often act cold to unicorns and will only help one if the situation absolutely calls for it.

So would a combination character using a Siren and its Gem golem guard work well? (ill explain more in the cs, but don't wanna waste brain power if its not acceptable.)

I've settled my mind.

I'm making someone from the Cult of Laughter. Lost their best friend even though they prayed to the Laughing Mare, that did bucking nothing, they get sad, run away.

Yay.

That sounds viable. I was honestly hoping wed get a Siren. Mock up the character and we shall work out the details.

EDIT: Impy raises a good point on the golem. A traditional fleshy body gaurd would be better.

Go for it, someone with...you know...THUMBS may be handy

Be warned, the cult is my House ( My our frowns never be upside down ), you will be more closely scrutinized than some of the other :D Execution is very important.

Ah, Gem Golems are puppeted by specific mages ("golem masters"), so that's a no.

:) There wouldn't be anything wrong with two living characters, though, like a Siren and a Praetorian who protects her.

EDIT: Ninja'd. It still doesn't fit, Kilt. Not the Golem, anyway. A master and her Golem would be a little different, but not a Siren and a lone Golem.
--

As for Nightingale... I don't know, enigma. I'm going to need a more in-depth description of dreamwalking, for one, and for there to be some sort of defense. I like it, as a Luna-aligned power, something that Nightmares would do, but as its described I think it needs more limits (especially for a girl who never completely went through the induction). Honestly, the background is also pretty weak. Come up with more development, other people that she has interacted with or who had an effect on her. Just something more. At the moment she's rather bland.

Alternatively, shoot me a PM with an IC sample, and we can do it that way.

--

:) Derp, be sure to add in some strong willpower. No average pony would be able to simply get sad and run away from the Cult. Will the character have any combat experience, or magic or anything?

So as to not step on any hooves *get it pony pun* Ill go with the secondary idea, (The golem would have been moved by the magic of her verse, and her natural longing for protection made it stick. But already shot down, I can do the latter idea with the guard, *hooves up*)
Ill set to work on creating a double cs.

Of course he'd have combat experience. I'm not sure if he/she will be a unicorn, an earth pony or a Pegasus...ugh.
