A Strange New World



The year is 1600 A.D. and the time for expansion is at hand. Resources not yet seen before and a land seemingly not yet inhabited lays across the ocean just waiting to be colonized. You are a Viceroy in the service of one of the majesty’s from the different courts of Europe, and it is your job and duty to oversee the creation, expansion and growth of these new colonies. Times are hard in this New World however as changes in weather, attacks from the natives or simple stupidity and miscalculation can lead to starvation and plague. If you are successful though the rewards are great, your success will be judged by the crown on a number of factors including industrial strength, economic growth, size of the holdings and the strength of your army. Succeeding in these areas and others can lead to boons from the homeland to aid you further or simply line your own pockets. However failure to provide what the monarch expects can lead to the opposite. Fines and possible expulsion as Viceroy are all too possible. You will not be the only Viceroy there of course. Every nation has sent one in hopes of capitalising on the wealth that the New World has to offer. Will you succeed where others may fail?

Okay as you may have guessed this will be a NRP set during the turn of the 17th century. You won’t be playing a nation but the colonies of a powerful nation during this time. The mechanics of the game will be a mix between statistics and freeform. I don’t want people’s posts to be big pages of numbers however I want some guidelines so people can’t go “Yeah…erm…now I am going to build a death star with a coconut and my vast rooms of gold” which I know some people feel the need to do so that they can win. I am not going to give specific mechanics as of yet since I want to gauge interest first. A couple of other things to note, I want this to be a long term RP with possible revolution being on the cards at times (Not straight away). This RP may start off slowly so don’t expect a world of guns and explosions from the go. Finally as I mentioned if you do not perform well enough in your role as Viceroy then the crown (Me) has the right to punish you and possibly remove you. You then get a chance to petition other monarchs (All played by me for fairness sake) to take over their colonies however if you don’t appear to be a better option you could very well be out of the RP. I will be creating roles for those who are fired as Viceroy, as well as making dropping them a last resort so people shouldn't be worried about having a number of screwups, to avoid them just being dumped however it may not be as glamorous as before. Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask and I will answer them.

Sounds interesting although I have a few questions. hope you don't mind.
*How much of "the new world" would have been discovered by the start of the rp? I'm guessing good old Columbus already discovered "India"(the Americas) but how about Africa and Asia?
*Will the rp's colonies be in historic locations such as cuba and the east coast of America or do we have freedom to choose where we start?
*Are the Europeans powers really the only ones who could send their envoys to the new world or can other powers of the time join in too? I know that the muslim states such as the turks would have no interest in sailing for the new world but I guess it would be fun to see them build up in the Americas.

Questions are fine, it's how I can improve the RP :)

This is going to be a purely Americas campaign, Africa and Asia have been discovered however they play very little part in this.

It will not be a historically accurate start and people will have a choice but the choice is limited, I want you all close enough together so that maybe a few sparks fly. But not so close that there is no breathing room.

To begin with it will be the historic and main European powers however if interest is high I may include the Ottomans and others.

17th century didn't really have the national focus we have now or even in the 19th century that made terrorism for political purposes possible. For the most part the peasantry is pretty locally minded. I doubt folks back then had the perspective needed to go off and throw themselves into an anarchist plot. The strongest players in wider respect would be those already in power, the nobility and the like.

Though this being the early period of the Age of Enlightenment there'd be a rising Middle Class. But the class difference would probably still mean there'd only be a small group of people with the scope needed to make actual decisions on how the world could be. The actual Enlightenment Movement (as it'd be called in the 19th century) would be pretty small. So feudal ideas in the ruling class and peasantry would be pretty common.

Put briefly and coherently: all the people you'd need would be too focused on their farm land and everyone else too small or already in a position of power already that they wouldn't care. Not until the King somewhere was an especially powerful douche. And if this RP's emphasis is on colonies then there'd already be a large amount of autonomy and self-rule in all of them.

And Prussia wouldn't even be a thing. Shit, the Kingdom of Prussia isn't even at electorate status in the Holy Roman Empire. The only kingdom in the HRE with electorate status remotely capable would be the tiny-ass kingdom of Brandenburg. But in all THE major player in German politics are the Hapsburgs, who ruling a sizable chunk of the Southern Empire, Austria, Hungary, Romania, and beyond are already the defacto German power.

I also think the Hapsburgs by this point would have sealed their power in the HRE as the permanent Emperors but I would need to check on that.


Europe in 1700

This'd be Europe at this time, and Germany wouldn't be a player in New World politics given that they got the Ottomans nipping at the bud and the general politics that is the HRE: which is to say a cluster fuck of irrelevant minor-lordlings.

I am very interested. Would an Irish or Scottish colony work, to block out the English? And I have one question. You said this would be long-ternnm. Would it be so long-term that it would reach the Industrial Era or even the Modern Age? Or no, it would come to an end with a winner before that?

If you want to pretend to be a hard ass then it's good to note that the French were literally the ubermench of Europe. The fuckers literally took more than seven powers to take down, granted they had half-help with Spain and Bavaria (if having the "nice Germans" count).

Interest has been great guys.

In regards to the cult/organisation idea MrFox I can't get behind that. Everyday life is a struggle so the focus is entirely on farming and foraging. Furthermore the colonies aren't places to make a statement. All the power is in Europe so any group would be focused there. Not on a new world that may not work out.

Dinh, thanks for the history lesson there however unless you are joining then please don't post, I can run my own RP. (No offence intended, just want to keep this for interest only)

Ulster, the Scottish at the time were just 4 years away from joining with England. Ireland too was already part of England, in fact 1600 that you could say was a time when the British Empire 'began'. This means that there would be little chance of them having colonies to rival the English. In regards to the length of the RP, right now it's late colonial however if interest and activity stays high I am certainly not putting a cap on it's length.

I shall start working on specific mechanics now and hopefully with them up soon.

Of course...I shall try and make enough nations for those interested right now. However I will hold off on anymore interest acceptance until I have seen exactly how stretched I am to find nations. People can double up though for a bit of national competition...
