History:
Ever since Rin was born, his family was slowly crumbling apart. Although, saying it like that, one could deduce that his family had some hope of coming together again. That was not the case. He was a single child in a small family; average standing one, as he would later find out. But the life that he was leading was everything but average. Full of dirt, hunger and hardships, his young days passed in isolation from his peers, as he had no friends and no acquaintances outside of his home. Or in his home. His parents took little heed of his needs, although they always tried to make it seem like they cared. And he believed them for a good part of his life. He was around eight years, appearance-wise, when he found out that his parents stole from other people, just so they could make their lives easier. And not the lives of the entire family, but solely their own individual ones. They stole from each other as well; it was an epitome of a messed up relationship.
The selfishness he felt emitting from both of his parents made him sick and even at that young age, he felt an enormous amount of hate flowing through his blood. His grandparents made up stories of his parents that made them seem idealistic, all in hopes of Rin hating his family less. Needless to say, it was in vain.
The stories were generic to the bone - both of his parents worked hard towards their goals in life, his father always boasting about how only ambitious people can succeed, and they did everything they could to give their son everything he needed. Those were the lies that he had to listen for days. Either that, or his grandparents were blinder than he thought.
Now that he recalls as far as his memories go, there wasn't a single drop of ambition in either of his parents. By the time Rin reached the age of twelve, his father was almost never home and his mother - well, he never had a chance to grow close to her. Up to that point, she wasn't with them anymore. Not because she died or was murdered, but because she left him and his father four years before. And, although his memory is blurry of the event, he doesn't remember her looking back or even saying goodbye.
Hate for his family only grew larger with years and gradually Rin started blaming them for everything. He still had no friends and people kept picking on him because he had no protection whatsoever. The things he had to do, in order to eat and drink, are some of the things that will probably remain in his memory forever. However, unlike some other emotions, Rin learned that hate is a passable substance - like fire.
It will grows vicious if one feeds it, but even the greatest fire will disappear at some point. Especially for the boy who was still searching for his true self. Of course, he did not forgive his family at once, but at least he stopped resenting them. It was when he left them all behind to start his life anew, that he found the strength to forgive. And forget.
He was alone on the road, but at least he wasn't isolated anymore. To keep himself entertained, he read whatever he could get his hands on. Then he started writing. It was around the time when he began writing poems that he realized he was good at it, and a realization dawned upon him - he was good at everything he did. Not great and certainly not good enough to earn himself a title of a "wonderkid", but whatever he picked up on, he was able to do at least average, a trait that made him stand out among other people as he was growing up.
Eventually, he found out that his personality is also likable to an extent. He begun utilizing his diplomacy skills to get through certain situations easier. And he even met a few people that he would few years later be able to call his best friends. Whilst spending his time with them, he earned himself a nickname - "Jack of all trades". But, as it goes with the saying, he was a master of none. Although he does not remember the exact moment, he begun mastering spiritual pressure he had in him at the time. Most of his friends had none, so they were only able to watch him train. All, but two of his best friends. They felt it too, and thus begun their training, the three of them setting their sights on becoming a Shinigami.
It was the best period in Rin's life; miles away from his home, he finally felt at home. His friends escalated faster than him and the most talented of them even got the chance to join the academy before the two of them. After he left, it was just the two of them, Rin and Sen. Two best friends training day in and day out. Both of them knew that Sen was the next one to go. He had more talent than Rin and was able to master his energy faster and better than him. He was almost ready. As Rin found that his skills could escalate in other fields, like dealing with people - diplomacy, Sen continued pushing his body to the very limit. That ambition drove Rin on as well and even if he was not able to follow, he swore that he was not going to stop.
Until life decided to joke around on his behalf one more time. It was a cold night, with moon shining high above their little homemade training ground. Just like every other night, the two were out practicing, until someone emerged out of the shadows, cutting Sen down. Although he hates to admit it, even now, Rin saw the man coming at them, but was unable to move, frozen with fear. He can clearly remember his heart beating, as if it would burst out of his chest, but his body would not move.
And just like that, his best friend was laying lifeless on the floor. And just like that, his first real home disappeared into the night. He passed out and doesn't remember anything else from that night, but waking up to an empty field. No man from the shadows and no body of his best friend. Not even a single drip of blood was left to fill in the missing pieces. He expected to feel rage, but nothing came, but a cold feeling deep inside. "Everything disappears. Everyone disappears." A voice echoed through his body. That night, a piece of his soul disappeared as well.
Without his friends, there was nothing for him to do. Not because he wasn't able to do it, but because he didn't know what he wanted to do anymore. Or why he should do it. Most of his time went by with him pondering the meaning of life, searching high and low in his mind for an answer that never came to him. It never dawned on him why other people lived on, if everything they do leads to the same path in the end; same path for everyone, ending on a cliff called death.
It took him more than a year to defeat his demons and arise from the ashes of depression with a new goal. He was forgiving everyone for far too long and over every sane limit. He swore to himself that he would find a meaning to his life and that he would do his best to protect other people from people that only lived to plant seeds of suffering.
Personality:
In a nutshell, Rin has quite a calm demeanor. Although his mind is often racing and trying to grasp everything around him, find answers to questions that are supposed to be left unanswered, he does his best not losing his cool and showing his inner feelings to anyone that he might find around. Mostly because he still fears getting close to anyone. Not in fear of losing them, but in fear of them losing him.
Although he doesn't like to get close to people, he doesn't mind interacting with them, as he feels the only way for two people to get close is to get to know the real person on the other end. As far as he can keep himself from opening up to anyone, he won't have a problem being a helpful acquaintance. And indeed, he swore to himself that he will help other people as long as he can - not letting anyone be in pain if they don't have to be.
He detests bad people and wouldn't mind cleansing the world of one of their kind, be it against the moral laws or not. He doesn't want to see innocent people suffer and the less bad people in the world there are, the less suffering there is. And as for who the bad people are? Mostly anyone that he brands as ones. Rin feels he has all the necessary knowledge and experience to differ good from bad.
On the other hand, Rin still has a love for poetry, although somewhat secretly. He enjoys writing whenever he gets the chance to be alone. He knows its something that has stuck with him all these years and even though he decided to walk the path of a protector, he could not bring himself to leave art out of his life. After all, art is not something that he decided to love, it is something that his heart did for him.

Shikai appearance:
Bankai appearance: Not mastered
Shikai skills:
Double-edge (passive skill, active all the time) - all sides of Tsukiakari are sharp, both the outside and the inside of the blade
Sixth sense, Akari (lasts max. 5 posts, cool down 3 posts) - upon activation, a silver insignia above the hilt opens up, revealing an eye that projects it's point of view directly to Rin; is able to pierce darkness to an extent
Sixth sense, Tsuki (only usable once per Shikai release) - the eye bursts, releasing a force of energy, covering the area in an indigo force field, thus neutralizing caught illusions in the process; afterwards, the silver insignia closes and remains closed for the remainder of Shikai's activation
Jaws of clarity (2 post cool down) - the two blades open on Rin's command, before closing full force on the prey
Silver wings (5 post cool down per wing) - the only projectile skill of Rin's Shikai; he is able to shot out one of the two "wings" (or both) towards his opponent, a projectile that travels at high speed in one direction (with only slight variation available) until hitting its target, at which point it breaks into an abundance of small razor-like blades that focus directly on the target. It takes approximately five posts for a wing to reconstruct. Rin is able to shot out both wings at the same time or one after another, but doing so would leave him without a blade to defend for the next five posts.
