Mass Effect music... eeh, ME1 and ME2's music was pretty weak much of the time, at least to me - I tended to turn off the music in both games and listen to other stuff. ME1's music got really, really repetitive, as did the gameplay, and ME2 was hardly much better - I can't really think of any particular track from either game that stood out, to me. ME3's music was pretty good, but it was still lacking a certain... punch. It was very wishy-washy orchestral generic sad/action music.

The Last of Us I haven't played, so I couldn't comment on it.

For an OST I would have to say Max Payne 3's is absolutely fantastic. HEALTH's, I guess Shoegaze/Noise Rock works really well and is something I could listen to outside of the game without losing a whole lot from the lack of interactivity.

For a curated soundtrack I would have to go with either Jet Set Radio or Grand Theft Auto V. Jet Set Radio's mix of hip-hop, breakbeat, and even some acid jazz just works so well with the tone of the game and what they were going for. And it's music that just sounds good without the game there anyway.

Grand Theft Auto V's music has a lot of music I listen to anyway on it, which is why it gets a big plus from me. Stuff like Flying Lotus, DJ Rashad, Black Flag, Aphex Twin, Wavves, Outkast, Kendrick Lamar, and Jai Paul are all stuff I listened to before the game was released and even the stuff I didn't listen to before was great. And hey, it even had a Tyler the Creator song I could actually stand.

Oh this is a thread.

This is the bandcamp for the guy that made the Risk of Rain sound track

Check it out

I like it cause it reminds me of this weird hybrid between Starcraft and Terraria music

Personally there is no best but games like Gears, Payday, Halo, Dragon Age, Star Wars KOTOR, Crusader Kings (Though it can get grating after repetition), Dynasty Warriors, Fallout, Command and Conquer, Super Robot Wars, and Assassin's Creed tend to have good soundtracks.

Of course there's a lot of more but these are off the top of my head. The classics like Link and Mario still stand the test of time.

The only pre-ESRB games you mentioned were Mario and Link/Zelda, and only if you mean their pre super-NES incarnations.

Pretty much, any pre-ESRB game that came as hardware-shareware is engraved into the minds of 20-30 year olds everywhere.
-There's even a chance you've heard music from games you've never played.

Now do a barrel-roll.
