EDIT: Oops. I'm a moron and forgot to finish one of the sections. Just a few minutes more

EDIT 2: Okay, here it is.

Full Name: Jinayah "Lovelace" Ifriti
Gender: All? None? (Biologically female)
Age: 20
Branch of Service: Navy
Rank: (I need help with this.)
Military Occupational Specialty: Mechanic
Appearance:

Personality: Jin is smart-mouthed and not afraid to be unique, but hides years of scars with tough behavior and posturing. Years on the street have left her with a difficulty trusting others with personal information. While the fellow officers do have at least Jin's respect, closeness is another story. She is happiest when at work, surrounded by oil and parts, motherboards and gears. However, when she isn't at work, she is utterly quiet. It isn't from shyness, it is more from an unwillingness to connect with others on a personal level. Especially since many on the ship are combat trained, she feels that getting to know someone who faces death would just lead to more loss.

Biography: Jin was orphaned at an early age, coming from a city with a high crime rate. Her parents were both in the police force, as a detective and researcher. Unfortunately their lives were cut short, after the relatives of a criminal that her father put away took revenge on the family. Jinny managed to hide so far in her closet that she went unnoticed. She was left to the mercies of the foster care system soon after, which was decidedly unpleasant.

Young Jin couldn't sleep at night, so she started to mess with the only interesting possession in the room. It was a retro alarm clock, the kind with bells and a tiny hammer. She examined it and messed with it, found an old hunk of a pen underneath the bed and took it apart piece by piece. It was dawn before she managed to put it back in working order.

Her obsession only grew from there. In between moving between foster homes, and running away from those foster homes, Jin grew into a gangly, androgynous teenager. Her smart mouth got her in and out of trouble, and her sharp mind got her freelancing work fixing computers and vehicles. When she was finally kicked out of the system, a local recruiter who had heard of her convinced her to enlist.

Despite not enjoying school or authority figures throughout her life, Jin managed to make it through her courses and even excel. While she has only the basic training required for a non-combatant on the ship, years of harsh life have left her with several skills that she would rather keep quiet about.

She is excited to be on her first deployment, and is determined to keep the ship, fighters, and exo-skeletons in the best order.

Looks golden. As for rank I would probably see Jinayah as an E-4 Petty Officer Third Class. She comes from a rather troubled background and because she enlisted she did not attend an officer training program or officer academy. However her skill in mechanics requires her to be paid more than some of the other non-combat personnel (such as cooks). She would not have a very high rank in the NCO department due to her lack of military deployment. You will probably need to work frequently under LCDR Delilah D. Delores as she is the head mechanic of the ship.

*nodnod* I scanned over the app. I didn't notice it before.

How funny that a gender-fuzzy young mechanic is working under a trans* officer. Perhaps Jin will make friends after all!

Also- Neil Degrasse Tyson colonizing Mars. Yes.

I'll add the new characters up to the list. Unfortunately I'm swamped with essays today and will not be able to continue the plot until I get back. For those of you who have not posted yet, you should do so now.

Is there anywhere that I can read up about the rules/ behavior standards for crewmembers that aren't... y'know, military?

I'm sorry, I don't know the terminology for any of this.

That would really help. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Even though we're not combat personnel we do still get combat training it's just not very extensive and mostly focuses on repelling boarding actions and fighting in tight corridors. As far as standard military customs go, this is 400 years in the future so military conduct is bound to be different by now, which gives us a convenient excuse to arbitrarily pick and choose the ones we want. Personally, I vote we keep the Bosun Caller.

A little write up about current military traditions and customs - from my own personal experiences from college classes and boot camp, and service

Regarding ranks and addressing people, unacquainted or less familiar people typically refer one another as "Rank Last name" ie. Corporal Carter, using Grenade's character as an example. Calling someone just by rank is fairly common as well. While out of regulation, people more familiar with one another, especially soldiers in the same squad or platoon, often refer to each other by just last name.

When addressing an officer (pretty much everyone else), one can use "Rank Last Name", "Rank", or refer to them as "Sir/Ma'am". Often times (especially when dealing with higher ranking officers), you can use 'sir/ma'am' to accent a conversation. ie "Colonel Harrison, so and so reporting as ordered, sir." or "Sir, so and so reporting as ordered, sir."

Salutes are generally rendered first from a subordinate to a superior, and then returned by the superior to the subordinate. Enlisted men/women do not salute each other. The salute for the most part, generally replaces, and is the equivalent of a civilian handshake. On the other hand, when a high ranking officer offers you his hand to shake, or when a superior officer salutes you first, that's generally an honor and means you did something really well.

You don't wear headgear indoors. I don't really know how that'll work in space, because everywhere is indoors... because space.

If you read Tachyon's post, you can get a good idea of what military conduct is like. "Attention" is the state of, well, standing attentively. Generally when called to attention, you drop whatever you're currently doing, stand up straight, and either get into a formation or give your attention to the officer in charge. The phrase "At ease" or occasionally "as you were" is essentially the order allowing people to return to their general business.

Other then that, its pretty much common sense and general courteousness. If I remember/realize anything else I'll mention it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure thats about it. The only reason I know this stuff at all, is because my parents are military, Indian military, and Tom Clancy books.

LOL no no the Bosun Caller uses a Boatswain whistle to call out commands on the open deck (which would be useless in space since there's no sound)

A whistle? Interesting...

Maybe instead of it being a whistle, it's a tone that plays through the communications? Like through headsets? Even in space they'll be wearing that kind of gear, right? To talk to each other? *shrug* That way it doesn't need air.

Everyone is inside the ship when commands are issued so you would be able to hear them. If you are outside the ship's hull you would have some form of long range communication attached to your space suit.

The Vigilance uses a simple loudspeaker system to issue commands on deck. It's simple, effective and with new technology they can easily broadcast messages to every inch of the ship.

One thing to note, since this was brought up before (by Latino, I believe.) Is that while on the ship, the Admiral is addressed to and referred to as Captain. However if you are going to say her name, it would be Admiral Chevalier not Captain Chevalier. She would be referred to as Admiral at all times when she is not on the ship, which will be almost never.

So yea, I'm thinking that having Grenade in the same squad as I would probably be a pretty decent idea.

Hey GG, I've joined up! Coincidentally, playing Jin again.

Everyone's starting out in the hangar. The call to get to the boarding station for the Vigilance is being announced, so everyone's basically heading toward the ship.

I'll likely have my post done by tomorrow evening. I have a vague notion of where I need to start, but I need to rest on it. I get creative in my dreams. ^__^
