By your standards, of course - I suppose the most enjoyable one you've participated in. What factors made it so great? Why was it so memorable? Am I a weird navel-gazer pining over the past?

Five years ago I had the pleasure of roleplaying with a wonderful group of people. Between the eight of us, we had about 13 characters. I still remember every single character because they were so compelling. They were diverse and colorful... Even the people playing "average-guy-next-door" types did a great job bringing them to life, and the scary ones gave me chills. Character interaction always felt alive. It helped that most people's writing style matched my preference for clear prose with minimal meandering. And geez, some people could really write. I loved reading everyone's posts in that roleplay.

I definitely felt like we were all on the same page. Honestly, the story and background was pretty simplistic: it was a Zelda-esque roleplay with basically the same plot as Ocarina of Time. We filled in the world and plot as we went. Our characters' actions had natural consequences and that's how stuff happened. When each component of a roleplay is solid, it's just so excellent. IDK, man. It was good.

Well, one was actually a short while back, with a friend. Storywise it was an absolute mess; it started off loosely based on supernatural, but eventually we just mixed and matched all kinds of fantasy lore and basically; it was just so much fun.
My rp partner also had a lovely writing style and very original characters, which helped a lot of course. But, beside that I don't even know why I loved it so much, I just did ^_^

Currently I'm in another one and I have to say; I haven't been this insanely motivated to post since that other one. It's basically about two guys who live in Manhattan and their ups and downs, but somehow it has managed to grab me more than any RP in the last while has.
It's also one of the few RP's that actually really made me cry. Only about three others have managed that, including the one mentioned above :') Not that that is saying much, since I'm emotional as fuck when it comes to fiction, but not many RP's have gotten me to the point where I REALLY needed a kleenex.

I think that currently, those two are my favorites ^_^

The one I'm in currently and GMing. It has the best group of players and friends I could possibly ever imagine to play with and I consider myself lucky and blessed to have them as my friends every single day. Our rp's story, world and characters are just brimming with life, personality and potential, it's something that gives me great joy to read and write for every single day. I could go on to gush a lot about specifics with regards to why I love it so much and the small details that make it so, but mostly overall it really is the group of friends I'm grateful to be roleplaying with, and how our rp has taken on a life of its own. It's really riveting stuff. To those people, I say thank you.

The Midnight Train is pretty awesome, with cool people. And it's one of the longest running RPs I've been in. And the plot never ceases to amaze me. Of course I can't forget my own RP, Pirate Age! It's been a awesom ride this far with great RPers and characters. The adventure so far has been a great one.
I almost forgot! A 1x1 I'm in with PopeAlessandros called When Realms Collide has been amazing. It's another long lasting RP and has managed to create feels more than once and the story has never dulled. Awesome RPs are awesome.

My favorite RP was called, cul-de-sac a (not so) family friendly rp, it was on a furry forum so we were furries, I played a father and his daughter it only caught the interest of one other guy he played a brother and a sister. It had gotten taken down because my father character drank and worked out alot, and he gave some beer to an under age character. :( but it was really fun!

Edit: I would love to bring it back without it being strictly furry but there would be.

I'm going to say its' the one I'm currently in. A lovely strategy roleplay, with an amazing GM, pretty nice people, interesting twists and politics.

I've got to say a Camp Half Blood roleplay which was not formally named and is now lost due to guildfall. It was a roleplay where I got to play a son of Hermes called Daniel Washington. The guy was one of those loner jerks but not without reason (read: his best friend got killed saving his girlfriend and he blames the girlfriend on it completely and developed a hatred towards all of the specific god's family for it). He was the underdog however as he not only was the leader (picked at the last second) but he led both a daughter of zeus (whom he dated during the quest towards the end) but also a son of Poseidon (he saved his ass single handedly after being captured) The character also had a knack for on the spot tactical planning, and sword fighting as well as a hobby for puzzles. There was also one other character but I think they dropped off and were killed (a lot of people left the rp before it ended).

It was my first real rp where I had people who genuinely wanted to get to the end and I became the roleplayer I am today because of said roleplay. My favorite aspects being (Daniel aside as I don't want to turn this into a post praising the almighty gods of greece for this guy) that it could have died but stayed alive long enough for the people to have fun in it and to have some pretty fun action scenes even if they were dumb some of the times along with some deus ex machina and butt pulls.

I'm currently Co-GMing an RP based on X-Com but with paranormal monsters instead of aliens and so far I'm having fun. Sadly, it's having a rough patch and is slowly dying.

Sigh.

Oh well!

I think I had a lot of fun because there was an IRC channel for it as well and we all cracked jokes and had inside jokes and became friends, making it so much more enjoyable.

It was in a somewhat unpopular role-playing gamemode in Garrys' mod. The world was immersive, atmospheric and beautiful; the role-play was character-driven, involving and a good mix of passiveRP and activeRP; The only drawback was that the server crashed.

My most successful?

Well, Legend of Renalta I suppose, though The Last Bastion is quickly becoming a success story as well. Legend of Renalta has stretched on for almost five years now, having spawned a sequel outright. The Last Bastion is slowly becoming my go-to for post apocalypse and science fiction mixed together in some kind of wondrous combination.

The original cast of the Legend of Renalta... Their developments... Just... Wow. One of the original cast led a rebellion and formed a new nation state as its emperor, another pair became the two queens of a resurrected nation state. There is another who became the head of a powerful military-religious faction... Some of them have even had children or taken on apprentices. A new generation of adventurers have arrived, and now the original cast are the ones giving out tasks to be completed, monsters to slay, demons to destroy, evil to quell...

It's almost surreal. I know that Queen--I role played as her when she was a princess! I know exactly what she went through to become the Queen! The battles, the lost comrades in arms, the bloodshed, the price paid in human lives... And now she's handing out quests, because where she once adventured out to defeat an enemy, she now has to run a kingdom and order others to do it, and live with the responsibility of knowing that if they die, she was the one who ordered them to their deaths. It's just... I've never had a story like that before.

The Last Bastion on the other hand lets me explore what it means to be human, and sane. What would a devastated humanity do about a mysterious threat of people-eating shapeshifters?

PassiveRP is what you get when your character isn't performing any actions of note. It's quite useful when a time-skip is not an option.
ActiveRP is what you get when your character is performing an action of note. This is basically just standard role-playing.

There are a lot of terms I use in my style of role-playing that aren't used here.

I've always wanted to get a group of people from here to roleplay using a Garry's mod server.
I think it'd be silly and fun.

As far as it goes to answer this question- I've had a lot of fun roleplays, but never one that truly stuck with me.
Most roleplays I have participated in have died prematurely, and I haven't got to do too much within them to title them as such.

For me, a non-canon Walking Dead Universe RP called Northwards was by far the best. It ran for perhaps three years, originally on the old site, and with maybe three different installations and one revival. I joined about six months or a year into it and, over the course of the rest of it I had written 50,000 words for just that one roleplay. And it was a Casual roleplay, not Advanced. Needless to say, that storyline held (indeed, still holds) a special place in my heart. I Co-GMed for a few months during the 2nd Installation, but the creator and GM (I haven't seen her since the death of the old site) is the primary reason why it became so great, along with a great group of RPers with a stellar cast of characters.

The best RP of mine was a 1x1 in a larger game.

The girl and her character had done a random open of her running naked in a park fountain (she lost a bet), and I replied with mine. They instantly cliqued, so unbelievably friggin well, I can’t even describe it – I’m sure peeps know what I mean. They were immediately magnetized to one another, interacting seamlessly in a flirtatious, classed kind of way and oh man. Oh man. The character herself was beautifully built and handled by one of the most creative and eloquent writers I’ve had the pleasure of threading with. Besides that, she was just a perfect match for my guy, and he was for her. We threaded them a bunch of times, playing on different scenarios and settings, and on every occasion, they were fluid and great to write. OOC wise, she and I didn’t have to brainstorm much or anything, soon as the characters were together, they synced and flew. It was one of those when you religiously check your phone when not at the computer, waiting for a reply…and when you get it, you immediately start planning your response. It was just a really tangy, enjoyable and challenging relationship.

It depends on what you count as an RP.

My outright #1 is a star wars RP I was in from a site off the Guild. But technically speaking it wasn't just one RP, but a ton of smaller RP's that all merged together in one universe and timeline. So if a multi-forum, multi-topic (and even multi-site due to site upgrading) RP's count that would be my number 1. It lasted for a long time, the community was close, all the characters were memorable and we just got so much done. I feel like I should go into more detail, but there's just too much to cover and if I tried I'd simply be flooding this page with text.

If RP is required to be within one forum/thread however, that would have to be one whose exact name escapes me (It was erased on the Old Guild cause of the crash, so I can't go back and check) but it was essentially a SAW rip-off. But instead the killer was known as a game master, and trapped a number of teenager's in this corridor/area where the Game Master would constantly throw them into sick tests and punishments in order to control them and make the kids fight for survival. Ultimately we all broke out though and it was one of few RP's on the Guild I've ever been in that actually finished and closed.

I enjoyed that one because community was also close (smaller, and not as close mind you as the Star Wars one), we all worked together to advance the plot. Never had any OOC drama, just me and one other guy sometimes playfully teasing another member of the group in jest. That and there was one player in that group where that RP largely contributed to us starting another really successful RP which was 1x1, which also finished, and was also a contender for #1 RP if the Star Wars one didn't count. Same person also having taught me how to play D&D 3.5 before we ended up losing contact with one another. :(

I've never tried going into those huge site wide Roleplays with the entire forum being one massive world rather than a bunch of small roleplays. I should try those huge forum Roleplay thingies where it's all connected...

The most important element is honestly community.

You can all be total shit at Roleplaying, but if it's a Good Community you will find the motivation and investment to keep going. At the same time you can be great at roleplaying, but a poor community can end it all because they're everywhere. You can't simply avoid X player by signing up in a different Interest Check than them.

I was 'lucky' in that the area I started forum roleplaying in had a huge asshole of an admin, so when I eventually got up and said "I'm making my own site, whose coming with me?" I literally had every active member there get up and walk out with me. We all had already known each other well from RP's on that old site, but we were also sort of bonded in having all walked out on that old site together, which gave us even more push and drive to keep going.

Basically, it is can an amazing experience. There's a reason that despite 4+ years of RP Guild my favourite RP is still from that site rather than anything on here. You just need to find the right people to do it with.
